Re: Team17's Development Partners Aren't Happy About The Publisher's NFT Plans

@Ironcore While all assets have some form of decay, NFT's lack of regulations means the chances of decay are significantly higher than most other forms of assets. I've had several friends have to DMCA down their artwork that had been stolen and NFTed, and with so many competing registries we'll likely see most of them collapse in the next few years. That doesn't even get into the question of 'Why bother using crypto if you're going to depend on a centralized registry anyways'.

I don't think it's misinformation to point out that the fact that many, if not most NFTs will be worthless in the next ten years means that people need to get other people to take them off their hands before it collapsed on them.

Re: Team17's Development Partners Aren't Happy About The Publisher's NFT Plans

link3710

@Ironcore Well, they are a type of pyramid scheme. NFTs are all ticking time bombs in when they'll become worthless eventually. (since they only work so long as the server the image is hosted on stays up). So the only way to make a profit in the market is to resell everything you buy at a higher value to someone else and let them get screwed over.

That still falls under pyramid scheme, even if it's not the typical method.

Re: PlayStation Boss Jim Ryan Says "More Acquisitions" Are Coming

link3710

Well, Bungie has never made a Switch game, Activision had gotten rid of all it's Switch developers in exchange for more COD, and Blizzard ported it's only old console games already. I don't think any of this will affect Nintendo any time soon. Blizzard barely ever puts games on their systems anyways.

Re: Switch Hackers Add Controller Pak Support To N64's Online Library

link3710

@Clyde_Radcliffe Do you know what Outride doesn't have...? Rumble pak support. Turning it off for that game would make no difference. They already have per-game setups for each title that enable different features implemented (that's why they turn off fog in OoT for some horrible reason despite it being in other titles).

Re: Random: This Fan-Made SNES Hack Combines Celeste With Super Mario

link3710

@Specter_of-the_OLED I mean, this hack is definitely not on that level of constant go-go-go. For the most part, it's very similar to Celeste, alternating section of constant movement and safe break locations.

Admittedly, it starts in difficulty closer to around Chapter 5 or so, rather than Chapter 1, but that's to be expected when it's aimed at people who've beaten Celeste.

Re: First Activision, Now EA? FIFA Publisher Is Tipped For Takeover

link3710

@MarioBrickLayer ...but FIFA as it is now is literally the butt of every joke about sports games? Articles on the regular talk about it being a casino, and I actually know parents who are starting to ban any sort of sports game from their household because of their reputation.

I think FIFA might be starting to realize that their brand is in danger if EA continues. It's only small damage so far, but I wonder how another 10 years of ultimate team adding more microtransaction would affect things.

Re: Microsoft Buys Activision Blizzard, Now Owns Call Of Duty And Crash Bandicoot

link3710

...mixed feelings. I don't think this is as monopolistic as people act. A-B has fallen significantly from their height as a publisher, CoD is their only regularly released product at this point. Considering Toys for Bob is on CoD duty and Vicarious Visions shut down (and both are the only studios to put out or announce any non-COD games this decade so far), the Activision side was collapsing. Blizzard hasn't put out a new game since 2016 (6 years ago), and WoW is finally dying (and was always Microsoft exclusive anyways).

They may be notable in terms of their IP catalog, but their very low output outside of a single franchise makes this not really monopolistic. Same thing with Bethesda. Removing them only is a drop in the bucket of major game releases, like... One cod game a year, and one blizzard game every ~8 years or so are all that's lost.

I can't see this getting stopped. Still dont like it but...

Re: Sega Could Reverse Decision To Sell NFTs Following Fan Backlash

link3710

@MatoFilipovic An NFT is just a code to 'something'. In the case of videogames, it's usually a code to a cosmetic of some sort you can use in game. It doesn't have to be a picture.

In the case of Quartz for example, every NFT let's you use a gun with it's specific pattern and serial #.

...Which is no different from the microtransactions before, other than costing more and having a serial #.

Re: GameStop Is Betting The Farm On NFTs, And Investors Are All For It

link3710

@NEStalgia Except everything you described doesn't require crypto to work... Not to mention that video game companies (i.e. Ubisoft Quartz) are making their NFT programs centralized, so they'll still be able to randomly revoke ownership, ban sales, shut down old versions of games or charge on every transaction, rather than the properly decentralized system crypto was supposed to provide.

Re: Sega Could Reverse Decision To Sell NFTs Following Fan Backlash

link3710

@MatoFilipovic Typically? So far it's just been implemented as another form of microtransaction, but even more expensive since now there's a backend cost to it thanks to the blockchain.

Also, the companies that have done it so far have kept control of the ledger, making it literally no different than if they used a private database to sell the items, other than energy cost.

EDIT: The theoretical plus is that you can resell the items... But Steams been doing that for years with their cards without having Blockchain involved. And we all know how much those items go for. Thanks to the necessity of a purchase fee on every transaction with blockchain, you won't be making anything doing so.

Re: Don't Worry, Zelda: BOTW 2 Is Reportedly Still Aiming To Launch Next Year

link3710

@rjejr You're telling me a game that took 5 years to develop using reused assets and physics engine, is likely to be delayed? I'm not saying developments gotten easier, but a game like this should be far easier to predict the length of development. The probabilitiy of delays aren't about how difficult a game is to develop, but how likely it is that unseen factors will break the planned timeline.

Re: Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2 Gameplay Concepts Revealed In Nintendo Patents

link3710

@Gwynbleidd They aren't patenting falling angles. The patent only covers situations where:
1. The button inputs involved are identical, specifically A for toggling states and R for speeding up. If a different controller labeling scheme is used it's invalid.
2. The falling character is wielding a bow and arrow
3. The archery stance is changed based on the angle between the current direction and a set reference angle
4. The player can speed up falls
5. The player can toggle between horizontal and vertical stances at will.
6. It's from a third person perspective.

If any condition is not met, the patent doesn't cover it.

Edit: also, the point of a super specific patent like this is it prevents anyone else from releasing a more generalized patent of the idea that this would be a specific instance of, making sure they can't be locked out of using it.
