Re: Feature: The Ever-Changing World Of Nintendo Switch Menu Icons

Not really sure how to feel about this debacle. I side with Nintendo that detailed icons look much better on the main Switch menu, but they start to look dense and scattered when they're ordered on the grid. I like the Switch UI, but this is one part where I wish the original design would have been a bit more featured.

@MH4 @RupeeClock I've reached 9.9 with two different characters. They way it works is that you need to have already reached 9.9 before you get to the boss, as beating the boss will award you however many points you got up to a final total of 9.8 (Ex: 9.2 before boss, +1.0, 9.8 after boss). The amount of tickets you use does not affect your chances of reaching 9.9, outside of dying in and of itself being a determining factor. However, if you die in the process (which is likely) and do not use a ticket, it does lower your chances of reaching level 9.9 because doing so reduces your level.

Re: "The Virtual Console successor is Nintendo Switch Online" Says Reggie

Not very wise to kill Virtual Console branding after having developed it for over 10 years. However, if Nintendo actually supplies the same amount of games for this service as they have in the past, but makes them all free under the online subscription, I have no issue. I just don't trust that Nintendo will actually do this, especially since it seems like each game that should be pretty easy to port is being turned into a netcode project.

Re: Soapbox: How Nintendo Switch Helped Break My Crippling Obsession With Achievements

johnW_ret

I never fell victim to achievement points because I mostly only had Nintendo systems, and still mostly do. However, I think they can be a great system if used right. Big if. It can be a little reward that adds to the gameplay experience, but only when matched with real content. The problem is, developers often just add these achievements as useless goals without ever curating the gameplay to achieve them.

Re: Guide: The Best Nintendo Switch Micro SD Cards

johnW_ret

I have a 64 GB SD card my Switch can "borrow" until I need to get a larger one, and I don't think I'll fill this one up fast since I purchase hard copies of games whenever possible (but economically beneficial, won't go for a hard copy that's on 100% markup from the digital). I'll probably fill up on screenshots before anything, which I can thankfully transfer to a computer or hard drive.

Even though I don't want to pay $70 for 200 GB or $230 (!) for 400 GB, I can say that SD card prices have gone way done in the last few years, and that's really good. Maybe by the time I really do need to purchase an SD card, they'll be a lot cheaper than they are now.

Re: Digital Foundry Gets Into Gear With a Rocket League Switch Tech Analysis

I was a bit disappointed at first, but I became more pleased as I watched the video. The game might have some frame rate drops, but it has no obvious stutters. Secondarily, this game is a fast-paced game where you are moving around the field, so the compromises they made seem to be the ones that affect the gameplay the least. And after I heard that they had to port the game from ground up with no Switch Unreal 3 support yet, I became incredibly impressed.

Re: The Plug Will Finally Be Pulled On Miiverse In November

johnW_ret

Miiverse had core design flaws that made it a terrible social media in the first place. It's integration with the games, like in Wara Wara Plaza, Super Mario 3D World, Super Mario Maker and more was actually good since you were using it from a casual perspective, not trying to go and find people to play with or have interesting discussions. I think it's kind of lazy how Nintendo isn't patching the Miiverse-integrated but not dependent features like replay upload instead of just killing them.
