Update 2 - Tue 19th Nov, 2019 03:25 GMT: Roku has now released a fix (via The Verge):
We are aware of an issue when using Nintendo Switch and the latest Pokémon game impacting a limited number of Roku devices. We are rolling out a software update to resolve it and impacted users can check for the update by going into Settings > System > Software Update.
Update - Mon 18th Nov 06:30 GMT: Roku has now posted the following message on the Roku subreddit, stating how it is working to resolve the issue (thanks, Digital Trends).
We are aware of an issue when using Nintendo Switch and the latest Pokémon game impacting a limited number of Roku devices. We are working diligently to resolve this issue. In the meantime, turning off your Nintendo Switch or setting to airplane mode should resolve the issue.
Original Story - Sun 17th Nov, 2019 23:45 GMT: If your Roku streaming device has been playing up since you've started Pokémon Sword and Shield, you're not alone. According to a post on the Pokémon subreddit, running the new Switch game and device on the same network supposedly results in Roku crashing and going into a never-ending boot cycle.
The problem is reportedly tied to Sword and Shield's Y-Comm service continually searching for other players on the same network or online, combined with Roku's inability to distinguish Pokémon data packets from the ones it needs to function properly. The device most affected by this is apparently the Roku Streaming Stick.
There's also a theory the problem could be more directly linked to the Switch. Either way, it's believed to be "signals" from the Switch that are crashing the device. Fortunately, there are a few temporary fixes available. You can either move your Switch across to a different network to avoid interference or play the game offline in Airplane Mode.
Have you encountered this issue or a similar problem in the past? Tell us below.

So what else wil this game cause ?
Windows locking up ?
Macs going up in flames ?
Mass floods ?
Earthquakes ?
@KitsuneNight Well, it caused a Great Depression for some people.
@Kalmaro
..Well played.
Imagine crashing a TV.
Not an anti-Sword and Shield comment because I’m not entitled but it’s just funny to me
Don’t other games have very similar features?
Ubisoft's games, namely Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, Monopoly, and Trivial Pursuit Live would mess around with my Wi-Fi network. Never saw an article on that blunder.
I assume that a firmware update has since resolved the issue as it doesn't happen anymore, but the games did screw up the Wi-Fi network every time I played any of those games, so it wasn't merely coincidental.
Well, our Roku tv would crash when I started it in dock mode. I have to start it in handheld mode then dock it. It is a little odd.
The Switch is just show it's dominance to other electronics. It's saying, I'm the Alpha Male. Therefore, the roku must be inferior. Cased closed.
This is an oddly specific issue
I don't have the Streaming Stick version, but I do have the Roku Express model and have been streaming video content and playing Pokemon the entire afternoon without problem in handheld mode.
I wonder if it's the same with NowTV boxes which are based on Roku?
Me: Game freak is not a small indie dev team, they are a team of several hundred proffessionals in a highly successful corporation, they have no excuse to make a shoestring budget game.
NL comments: (high pitched screaming)
Playing the new Pokemon game caused an earthquake of 7,1 Richter in my city, a mega tornado appearing out of the blue and the NintendoLife's website appearing with a messaging system that replies appear just beneath the actual comments.
@flapjack-ashley mine works in handheld. It’s just when I first start the game up in docked mode.
Seems to be a Roku issue - people on the Roku subreddit without a Switch are reporting similar issues.
@KitsuneNight
Pokemon Go caused a ton of real-world accidents and disasters, from multi-car pileups to people literally walking off of cliffs while staring at their phones.
So yeah, been there, done that, yada yada
Game Freak: First it was the National Dex, then the microSD card, and now the Roku. Next up, the world.
It looks like Game Freak is on a roll to turn Sword and Shield into the most dangerous Pokemon game of all time.
Could we get some more sources for this? There’s a lot of misinformation going around from both sides about this game right now. Reporting on a reddit thread doesn’t exactly help the situation.
I have a Roku stick connected to the tv I use for my switch but don’t intend to buy sword or shield since Pokémon isn’t really my thing. Never had problems at all.
My Roku smart TV has gotten stuck in a boot cycle the last two nights after playing Sword and Shield earlier in the day. The issue seems to resolve itself after I reseat the power jack and unplug the HDMI before starting up the TV again. Really weird, random issue.
@westman98 What?! People walked off cliffs? Like died?
The person in the article that is having the problems, he then thought of something that the roku and Switch were telling him. He took the roku in his left hand and the Switch in his right and did something amazing. He took both arms are made the roku and Switch touch each other and then BOOM! They combined and became Captain Planet! No, I'm just kidding, they became Switcharoku. Duh!
@Xylnox You sound shocked. People like looking on their phone while driving.
That's very interesting. Cant wait to see if im effected or not.
@Kalmaro Prolly. I never touch my phone as I have that hands free stuff in my new car. Even in my old car I would try and never touch my phone. Some young teenager almost side-swipped me going prolly 40mph and slammed on her breaks just in time. Scared me but she had her phone in her hand when I looked at her. I hope she learned her lesson too.

@KitsuneNight Pacemaker connected to the wifi keeps skitzing out
Let's not kid ourselves. Nintendo is doing this on purpose just to screw with us.
Who knew this latest round of Pokemania would be this dramatic 😂😂
@Xylnox it's something I'm bad about too. I like listening to YouTube while I drive. Silent car rides are strange and my radio doesn't work.
It's happening because Nintendo wants the haters to play a bit longer and like it, instead of them quitting and going to watch a show instead
Guys, Pokemon Sword & Shield broke my refrigerator. Pls help.
What is a Roku? Sounds more like a Pokémon name than anything else.
@Kalmaro Just be careful. At my previous job, there was a guy who would play anime shows and put his phone on the steering wheel and hold it there to watch. That guy is crazy. Ha
@westman98 Wow, that is crazy. I don't play games on my phone so I guess I am good. Heh
I'm so sick of this. There is no way this is specific to Pokemon. If anything the fault lies with Roku devices not knowing what is and is not a signal meant for them.
It just happens that Pokemon uses Switch local wireless in a way for Roku junk not to work proper. But sure, let's find yet more nonsense to attack Pokemon over.
I'm so sick of this crap on this site.
*slips on a banana peel
"Thanks Pokemon Sword/Sheild"
@Heavyarms55 Yeah, there has been a lot of milking going on here.
@Xylnox Yeah, that guy is nuts! I just play a video and toss it on my passenger seat while it plays through my speakers.

Went ahead and removed adblock for this site. Well see how it goes.
@KitsuneNight
My guess is a plague of locusts.
@Heavyarms55 Same.
@KitsuneNight Cat gets pregnant and toilet won't flush. True story.
@Silly_G Being real, who cares about those when compared to the new Pokémon games.
@westman98
That was the pokemon evolution of natural selection.
@tseliot
Cats and dogs living together.
Mass hysteria !
How is this possible?
Update: Roku blames Nintendo for their own faulty products.
It's not on Nintendo or Game Freak to test their product with every other consumer product on the market around the world. It's 100% on Roku to deal with their own junk.
Now, it might be reasonable for Roku to ask Nintendo/Game Freak for assistance if they find some highly specific technical issue they can't resolve themselves. If Nintendo or GF refused to help, then I'd finally have some sympathy. Not before.
I'd guess that the Roku and Pokemon are both using the same port on the local network, and the Roku doesn't search for another port if the the usual one is in use. So when the Roku is turned on it just keeps rebooting as it can't run on it's usual port. If that is the case though, it's a massive fail by the Roku dev team.
@Heavyarms55 @Kalmaro how is it clickbait? Roku have confirmed the issue? Clickbait means to post a headline that contains misleading information that then isn't the case in the article, which this isn't. If you don't want to read an article, you are welcome to not click on it.
As for using Adblock, that's disappointing for our team as all our income is from ads and affiliate links. We'd hope that any regular reader of the site would want to support our team. We try to balance the type/number of ads and believe we offer a better experience than most gaming sites on that front. We may in the future offer an ad-free subscription which maybe you would be interested in?
I have a streaming stick that's probably 3-4 years old now. Absolutely no problems until the day and date Pokémon launched. Resetting the stick seems to do the trick for me, but YMMV.
Strange. Luckily my Switch is in the other room to the Roku, so no problems my end.
@antdickens Click bait in the sense that roku has been having this problem before and it's not unique to the Switch.
As for adblock, it's nothing personal, I have it on foe all websites since I use Brave browser. Without it, your pages rake longer to load and its a bit harder to navigate.
@Kalmaro that still doesn't make it clickbait. It's an issue that is new to many since Pokemon was released, certainly new to me. Anyone affected would want to know what is going on.
I'm aware ads will slow down the pages a little, but to support what we do would be great if you would consider whitelisting us.
@antdickens I see it as click bait but I can see your point. I may have been a bit harsh.
I'll go ahead and white list this site just because you've been pretty chill.
@Kalmaro no problem at all, thanks. We never do intentional misleading clickbait (that's just not our style), but obviously we have to balance the fine line of making something look interesting, so appreciate the feedback anyway
@antdickens You're doing fine, this Pokémon fiasco has got me on edge. Keep up the good work 👍🏾
@Sundavr I have a Roku stick connected to the tv I use for my switch but don’t intend to buy sword or shield since Pokémon isn’t really my thing. Never had problems at all.
It's like if people were posting about problems with BMW transmissions and you posted 'I have had no problem with my Dodge transmission'.
After playing Pokémon Shield, I've noticed my cats and dogs sleeping together, mass hysteria!
At least Roku responded fast.
Lets see what other Disasters this game wil incur.
And then Nintendo and Game Freak are swimming in cash and doesn't give a crap about the Pokemon games crashing situation.
Do people still use Roku? I can’t speak about the US content but in the uk I found it quite underwhelming
Um, where do Pokemon come from?
Evidently i jinxed it.
The games are now bricking consoles.
@WesEds Do people still use Roku?
You are in a thread about the Switch having issues with Roku devices and you ask this question?
Yes. People still use Roku.
Remember ROKU is made in China...that should tell you something...
@Crono1973 again I don’t know what the content is like in the US but here in the UK it seemed more like a novelty way of getting a few channels, I just assumed it died off.
@SwitchForce
So is everything else.
