Upcoming JRPG Oninaki is now just a couple of months away from launching on Nintendo Switch. In preparation for the release, new screenshots and character details have been revealed.
Let's kick things off with those lovely screenshots. We've handpicked a few which represent both the story elements present in the game, as well as the main gameplay itself. Take a look below.

The new character information comes in the form of introduction texts for both Lobelia and Leo. We've also got official descriptions which tell us a little more about their personalities.
Character Introduction Text:
Lobelia
“As sovereign, I have a duty to protect this realm from harm. And you, the living, bound as you are to life, have a duty to celebrate all creation.”The sovereign lives a life of isolation, able to trust in none but herself. Lobelia can seem cold and aloof, remaining at a distance from those around her, and seldom appearing before her people. Indeed, many of her subjects would scarcely recognize her at all. To Lobelia nothing is more important than upholding the tenets of reincarnation, and it is clear she will not tolerate even the slightest deviation.
Leo
“If you stand against me, you stand against the sovereign. You stand against the realm itself.”Lobelia’s right-hand man, and trueborn son. Since his youngest days, Leo has revered Lobelia not as mother, but as sovereign. There are no others Leo trusts, none whom he calls friend—but he has never begrudged her that. Leo follows the sovereign’s words with blind devotion, and pays no heed to anyone else, a fact which has put him at odds with the Watchers.
Oninaki launches on 22nd August and is being published by Square Enix and developed by Tokyo RPG Factory. Interestingly, Chrono Trigger director Takashi Tokita is working on the game as creative producer.

This does look very beautiful, I am interested in getting this, but wondering about the price.
@DockEllisD Thanks for the price. Are you talking about I am Setsuna? I liked that game but I do see room for improvement.
It looks better than I am Setsuna. I'll still wait for reviews before even considering buying it.
I'm looking forward to get my hands on this one although I am not keen on the change from ATB to action. Also although kind of basic games I enjoyed both setsuna and lost sphere
not really sure about the style of this one tbh, I loved I am setsuna but not sure I like the battle system. will wait for a review
Lost Sphear was good, but there was way too many options for upgrade, and bringing in Mechs too was just silly.
To make a good game you don't need to try and pack as much as possible in to it.
I am about 2 hours into I am Setsuna... Picked it up during the sale because I sort of liked Lost Sphear... Pretty slow so far but we will see. I feel like Tokyo RPG Factory is on the verge but hasn't pieced it all together yet.
Visually this is a real step up from their previous work at Tokyo RPG factory. My game schedule is pretty packed already but if this plays as well as it looks I will definitely give it a shot.
Will keep on the radar!
@DockEllisD
Nice. I can’t figure out if this is even getting a physical release in the West.
By the way, you were right about FFX and XII. All versions of XII have English subs with JP audio. For X and X2 even the multi language version I ordered from Play Asia doesn’t have those options. I feel like I was mislead by their advertisements for both games, which made it seem like the Asia version was the only way to play in Japanese with English subs. They were apologetic about it, but I missed out on that reverseable artwork in the US version of FFXII because of it.
I love this generation with Nintendo! It used to be that JRPG's and RPG's in general where solely in the land of Sony. But not no more and you can take them on the go.
Edit: Home Consoles.
These Square economy RPGs haven’t grabbed me yet
As this studio has shown us with 3 games (they don't have a huge budget), you can make 2D RPG's without showing all the pixels.
As I have said many times, in the 8 and 16 bit days developers tried not to let the pixels show whereas today indie developers go out of their way to make the pixels show.
@BacklogBlues I love this generation with Nintendo! It used to be that JRPG's and RPG's in general where solely in the land of Sony. But not no more and you can take them on the go.
What if I told you that the GBA, DS and 3DS were all strong RPG portable game devices?
Just FYI, it’s not a JRPG but an action RPG
Looking forward to it, though!
@jipiboily
that's what i noticed and why i'll keep an eye on this one.
i dislike jrpg combat and much prefer real time.
Yes i know they were all great @Crono1973 but i ment home consoles. Thanks for showing me the error in my post. I will edit accordingly
@DockEllisD Do you happen to know if the Japan release of La-Mulana 2 will include English language support? I'm really looking forward to that game, loved the first. I pre-ordered it through ZenMarket, so really hoping that it has English... it was kind of a risk. It's hard to find much information about it.
I'm just not that into this art style, it feels like the same 3DS style art that I wasn't a huge fan of. It might grow on me, but this is a game I probably won't pick up right away, besides the fact my backload is huge.
Damn looks nice. Reminds me of OG Nier. I need
This looks awesome.
Honestly, this looks insanely good. I'm cautiously optimistic after their previous two games didn't really hit the mark for me, but this looks like it could be a genuinely great game in the end. Color me excited.
@DockEllisD Thanks very much for that info! That is disappointing, but the other extras (book, soundtrack) are still appealing, so I'll probably keep the pre-order. This is my first time importing a game. Do you know (perhaps from other releases) if later updates to Japanese versions add English support, or are the versions completely different?
@DockEllisD Thank you for taking the time to share the info. I was in the dark, so I'm really thankful you mentioned it.
I'll admit that this game's trailer got me hyped at first... Because I thought it might be a new Soul Blazer, and then a new Valkyrie Profile. Squenix has so many great IPs to go back to instead of constantly creating new ones.
I still can't quite get into Tokyo RPG Factory's games. So far there is something that feels very hollow about them that I can't quite get gripped by. The stories and characters feel like cardboard and the combat feels like paint by numbers with the kitchen sink thrown in just because.
I think they have the talent, but the formula just isn't there.
@sword_9mm @jipiboily
This is a Japanese-made role-playing game, so I think the JRPG acronym still applies as an umbrella term for the distinct Japanese RPG aesthetic. I understand that most Western-made RPG's are ARPG's, and that "JRPG" has been appropriated to distinguish between the combat systems, but I still think you can apply the term to any Japanese RPG.
Anyway, Tokyo RPG Factory has made big improvements to the lighting and environments, but I'm still not a fan of the character designs. Growing up with ARPG's like Kingdom Hearts, Okami, Megaman Battle Network, Sword of Mana, The World Ends With You, etc etc., I'm instantly more interested in the combat, but it's still more of a wait and see for me.
Happy i have games to keep me going till it comes out!!! Lots of game coming up!! Wallets going to bleed. Whyyyy Nintendoooo why!
@DockEllisD
I see they are calling the Japan version of Oninaki the "Multi-Language" version on Play-Asia, with English support, so I think you are right. And good news for us with Dragon Quest XI S. It was confirmed via Nintendo Direct earlier in the year that Japanese Audio with English Subs will be an option. 👏
@DockEllisD
Yeah, and thanks to you too.
I'm the same with English dubs. I don't like them in anime either. The voice actors bring their own personality to the characters so I think the Japanese voices are probably better interpretations of them. The first Xenoblade is the only game I've plaid where I thought the English audio might actually surpass the Japanese.
I Am Setsuna was pretty neat. I felt that the story, and the snowy landscape combined with the all piano OST to give the game a real soul. I did not appreciate the lack of ambition however.
Lost Sphear didn’t seem to improve on the problems with Setsuna, and stripped out that which made it beautiful. It seemed very generic frankly.
This time I am sold on the art, as well as the ambitious gameplay. I will be importing this one!
I love the games where the developers are clearly inspired by psychedelics.
This looks really pretty, I think I'll be picking it up. The dialogue from Lobelia and Leo made me think of Leander and Nerea from Nino Kuni 2
For anyone who doesn't know, this game IS getting a NA release. It's been in NoA tweets, their directs, and even Nintendo.com. Idk why some people think it's a JP exclusive. Even without that evidence, both of their previous games had a NA release, and even physical versions.
