At Square Enix Live yesterday, Dragon Quest fans were presented with a brief trailer reinforcing the fact Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition was coming to the Switch this Fall. It was at this moment there was a collective sigh, with everyone assuming there wouldn't be a release date reveal anytime soon.
Fortunately, Nintendo's E3 2019 Direct presentation pulled through in the end. Shortly after Dragon Quest's 'The Hero' was unveiled as one of the DLC fighters coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, we received the smashing news Dragon Quest XI S would finally arrive on the Switch this September. Yep, after waiting many years for its arrival, it appears we'll finally get our hands on this epic role-playing title on 27th September.
Here's some information about what the Switch version of the game will offer, directly from Nintendo's PR:
The Nintendo Switch version boasts all the sprawling content of the original game along with newly added character-specific stories, fully orchestrated field and battle music, additional monsters to ride, side-quests to journey into past DRAGON QUEST worlds, and the ability to change between HD and retro-inspired 16-bit visuals. Additional enhancements include the ability to speed up battle sequences and the choice of a Japanese or English voice track.
And we also have this lovely trailer to share:
So, if you want to get to know 'The Hero' who will be in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate a little bit better, it might be worth checking this one out.
Will you be picking this up on release? Tell us down in the comments.

But how do we play it, snes style or full on 3d?? Ah what the hay, it deserves 2 play throughs!
Did anyone else notice 2 extra spaces under The Hero and BK in the DLC section of the FIGHTERS in the Smash Bros. Ultimate webpage?
@Clamango ... Because the Fighter's Pass is for five characters. Joker, Hero and BK are the first three.
@Clamango There will be five DLC Fighters, 3 of which have now been revealed. I guess Piranha Plant didn't count.
@Sabrewing
I meant 2 extra spaces besides the two for the unrevealed DLC characters. There're a total of four spaces.
@Clamango they could still be deciding where to put them.
Preordered this after the Smash announcement. Funny how a when a new character is introduced in Smash it makes me want to buy their respective game when it releases on Switch. You hear that, Atlus?
This was so worth the wait!
@Clamango I saw that before, too. It seems it was an error because it’s fixed now, at least on the mobile version of the site.
Oh man, I am incredibly excited for this!
Waiting paid off big time. <3
Probably not using 2D mode in my first playthrough, though. I'll save that for the future.
OK this is getting a bit full on i think it would be useful with all the RPG's coming out in the next few months someone (Nintendo life) puts out a buy guide. I dont have enough time in my life for all these RPG's.
Dragoon Quest XI S: Definitive Edition, The Legend Of Zelda: Link's Awakening, and Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch man i'm going to be broke in September.
I like many games, but I can live in a world with only Pokemon and Dragon Quest. That's my love for these franchises.
Wasn't this date already confirmed? Maybe that was a leak I saw. Either way I am looking forward to this!
What really bites is this limited edition Dragon Quest Switch they are launching in Japan.

Definitely buying this. It really will be the definitive version of the game!
I retract all of my ire about the 3DS version not leaving Japan. This has made the wait more than worth it. The best part is that it comes out near my birthday. =3
September is jam packed. Between this and Zelda, Ni No Kuni and Daemon X Machina will have to hit the back burner. Then Witcher 3, Luigis Mansion 3 and Pokemon will release. And all of this is if I'm finished with Ultimate Alliance 3, Fire Emblem and Astral Chain in time. When will I be able too play DOOM Eternal? I don't even want any games too release December to March. That way I can catch up on the 50 games I'll miss playing the other 50. Holy Smokes this has been a great E3 for Nintendo. So many games and yes, it's such a good time too be a Switch owner.
I'll be getting this one fooor suuure.
I wonder if there will be a special edition??
Was going to buy this on PS4 until the grumblings of it maybe coming to Switch. I really love my RPGs portable now, and my patience has paid off. Cant wait to get this one!
@Zidentia That looks very nice! I usually don’t care about consoles with designs but I could see this one next to my tv.
@Spoony_Tech We’ll play it twice! I want to start with the 16bit style because I played the game on PS4. My only worry is the time I need to invest on RPG’s alone this fall 😁
Definitely a day one buy no questions ask.
@Zidentia Christ, man, don't show me that.
I really can't afford to waste any more cash on imports, my gf is gonna murder me.
Then again...it might be worth it.
I passed on playing the Steam version (4k60fps) just to be able to play this unique and awesome version.
@molliolli182
I also do not really go for the custom consoles but this one just got me. It has just the right color scheme in my opinion.
@Starcakes
My apologies but I was overwhelmed as I normally do not go for custom consoles. Now I really want it but have to come up with the cash for it.
Holy crap! Look at this:

@Zidentia Those blue joy cons really fit, and I like that the artwork is not overwhelming. I don’t think I really need another switch even though it looks cool. Maybe when those pro/lite-models (eventually) are released, I’ll wait for some nice custom console instead the basic model.
I've never played a DQ game, so this looks to be a nice way to get into the series. I'll get it down the road.
@Luna_110 Same. I hope this game is a good entry point for a Dragon Quest noob like myself. I was going to pre-order this but it seems no retailer in Canada is offering any kind of E3 discount (unlike years past when every game shown at E3 got a corresponding 30% discount for pre-orders....ahh the good ol' days). As such, I'll probably pick this up a little down the line myself, maybe digitally if Nintendo offers up a My Nintendo 30% off coupon which they've done for the Dragon Quest games on 3DS before.
@DarthFoxMcCloud
I actually started with Dragon warrior on NES and it really made an impact on me. More so than Zelda did. I did drop out of the series for a while ans eventually came back.
How would one compare this to Breath of the Wild? I’ve never played DQ before. Also is this terribly “grind-y”?
I love me some Dragon Quest. What with Ni No Kuni, DQ and Link I may be selling a kidney this September, but it'll totally be worth it.
