Re: Hardware Classics: SNK Neo Geo AES

@JaxonH I completely share your pain, though in my case it's just wasted potential on all the consoles I've collected over the past 30 years.

I love video games, and I love the fact that I have access to nearly every retail console on the market. My issue is that I never actually use them, and looking at my collection I just can't help but feel empty.

I've been considering donating off these old systems so that others can play the games I loved way back. And like you I think I'll just stick to collecting games (that I'll possibly never actually play). My 3DS and Xbox One take up too much time for that at the moment.

@yomanation Yes, hopefully we do get those 3rd party ports on time 'this' time around.

And as for the ports to mobile, I'm aware it's inevitable, but I hope that transition is slow. Not only that but I think not every publisher will go that route seeing as most tablet/mobile user isn't keen on spending more than a few pounds on applications, much less anything at all.

We'll see how it goes

@yomanation Late 3rd party ports are a given (at least, at launch). I believe we'll need to rely on Nintendo to get unique titles, at least until 3rd parties believe they can profit from the Switch.

As for Switch ports to tablets/mobile, I hope not. Either that or it'll be the other way around, with the eShop crammed to the brim with crummy mobile games. Only time will tell.

Re: Rumour: Nintendo Switch Game Cards Limited To 16GB Size

biscuitsandtea

As a consumer I don't care how much these cartridges hold. So long as it doesn't affect the development of titles for the Switch I don't think I should care about the size for these things.

Besides, this might finally get developers to stop leaving uncompressed audio to take up 30GB of a game's install.

Re: Talking Point: Imagining a Future Nintendo Switch Budget Spin-Off - A Non-Switching Microconsole

@Ralek85 Indeed, design and software are key to this system's success. I'm certain that EAD is capable of the former, but software-wise I'm a tad concerned considering Nintendo's previous consoles. I certainly hope they don't consider any proprietary means of external memory storage. And, though I hate to say it, the Switch ought to be more 'tablet-like' (Windows and Android, etc) in how applications work.

Though honestly I'm purchasing this system primarily for gaming on the go as I have been doing so with Nintendo's products since the start of this century, so multitasking hardly matters to me. I can't speak for today's audience, but considering the Switch's form factor it's safe to say many will expect the device to behave just like any other tablet on the market.

Re: Talking Point: Imagining a Future Nintendo Switch Budget Spin-Off - A Non-Switching Microconsole

@Ralek85 I do agree that if the Switch has some shabby screen that it might prevent a day one purchase from me.

The poor display on my launch 3DS has colours that are hard to differentiate sometimes and has a yellow tint that can be seen at certain angles.

Like you said, I don't mind paying a premium on these devices and hopefully Nintendo won't settle for older screens in an effort to save too much money.

Re: Poll: Nintendo Switch Delivers Single Screen Gaming - Will You Miss the Dual Screen Concept?

biscuitsandtea

The touch screen on the DS was largely what made the system so different when it launched. So many developers came together and made practical use of both screens + the touch screen for so many genres in so many ways that the DS is one of the few video game devices that offer many unique experiences all in one system. Years later I still favour the DS, even when comparing it to its successor!

I'll miss the dual-screens, but I suppose it's time to leave them behind to try out a new vision of portable gaming. Personally, I have a feeling dual-screens will come back, but not in this decade

@Late Very cool of your teacher to let you try out new software like that! I think it's a good learning experience, even if you lost a bit of hair trying to do more than place objects in a premade island (at least, that's what CryEngine generated by default last I checked).

I hope to see you creating games someday!

Re: Unreal Engine 4 Will Be Supported on Nintendo Switch

@MadAdam81 Sonic Boom ran on CryEngine. Frankly when I heard that alarum bells were already ringing in my head, months before the game was due, considering very few developers (aside from crytek) knew how to use the toolkit for the engine.

Either way, the idea would have to be up with SEGA.

Re: Parent Trap: Nintendo Switch Takes on Tablets

Though I have a hard time trying to get the boys from staring at YouTube videos all day, Nintendo is a name that resonates in my home. It's the Wii,3DS and DS lite that see the most use in the household (the Wii U a close third, Minecraft on the XOne takes second).

They both loved what they've seen. Hopefully I can give them a Switch and take away their windows tablets 😄

Re: Random: Nintendo NX Rumours From French Media and an Analyst Report, While Zelda Williams Fends Off Anxious Fans

biscuitsandtea

I'm in no rush for the NX as I have many games to play on my 3DS and Wii U. Still, the aging hardware on both systems is visible, especially on the 3DS. I'm hoping that if the NX is a hybrid console, that it features a screen larger than 240p so that I don't go entirely blind before I'm 40 years old.

Here's to the next two weeks of rumour articles and (possibly) an actual mention of the system in Nintendo's next investor meeting.

Re: Poll: Exceptional Graphics or 60fps, Which is More Important for the NX Generation?

biscuitsandtea

Highly depends on the game. I think all games benefit from having a higher receive and response time, but that also depends on the game too.

Honestly, graphics and frame-rate never did bother me growing up. I played a lot of games below the 30 FPS line for a long time (I remember running Half-Life and Deus Ex at sub 20) so I guess I'm used to it. I admire graphics of all kinds of games (unless they clash visually) so that doesn't bother me either.

But don't get me wrong, a low FPS can sometimes make games look a bit funny. An example would be Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice, a game I'm playing through right now. The animation work is gorgeous, and the models are very nice. However, the lower framerate often gives off the look that the game is skipping frames, barely keeping up the pace.

Since it's a visual novel, I suppose it can get away with a lower framerate, despite it even affecting the rate text is outputted on screen (and even skipping dialogue).

In the end of the day, I'll gladly have both a high framerate and a nice visual design. The Wii U had plenty of games where I feel both criteria were satisfied in my opinion.
