Releasing a game on a Nintendo platform is often a career goal for both aspiring and accomplished game developers. For the team over at Playful, it was no different.
During an interview with Nintendo Life video producer Zion Grassl, Playful founder Paul Bettner and company president Mark Stanley revealed how Nintendo helped re-energise the development studio behind the recent release, New Super Lucky's Tale:
We saw that energy and that passion the [development] team had to keep going with the Lucky franchise and we said okay let's just keep going, let's take that and put it into the product and keep evolving it and improving it
we met with Nintendo after that...we combined those superpowers with the energy Nintendo brought to it when they first laid their hands on the game, on the early builds of the game - they were so thrilled by it and that just energized us even more
Playful was also thrilled by the "warm embrace" when Nintendo tested it out:
And we felt that the Nintendo audience was such a perfect fit for a game like this, but we didn't know at the time how Nintendo was going to feel about that, and it has just been the most warm embrace by their team, they played it - they didn't know either, I think, but they sat down they played the game and you know they kind of just looked up and smiled, that's it basically. That was like the best feeling because they know their audience and they know the quality they expect of games, especially that they're gonna kind of partner with the developer directly to bring something to market and so having that embrace, it means a lot to us
It's always fantastic to hear when developers have such positive experiences with Nintendo. Of course, this isn't the first time a development team has been overjoyed to work with the iconic Japanese company.
One fantastic moment we're reminded of was when Ubisoft Milan creative director – and lifelong Nintendo fan – Davide Solani was caught bawling his eyes out at Ubisoft's E3 2017 press conference when Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle was revealed to the world.

I'm sure the extra money they will make will re-energize them too!
Joking aside, I remember playing the original game on my Gear VR and it was pretty interesting. I hope the Switch version pans out for them, they really seem passionate.
Hold up, I'm confused. Did Nintendo help make this game? Is that why this is exclusive to the Switch when the original is exclusive to Xbox?
I really want to get this game after trying the demo. It's so cute, and I love the music. Probably will wait for a sale though.
@AnnoyingFrenzy this is a port as far as I know... an enhanced port.
@fafonio Yes I get that, but if that's all it is then why were early versions sent to Nintendo for approval and why is it exclusive to Switch?
@AnnoyingFrenzy as far as I’ve read ... it’s a remixed enhanced port of the Xbox One version ... new levels, more story, remixed placement of levels in the hub, fixed camera, new costumes, etc.
@fafonio I know. You aren't answering the question.
@AnnoyingFrenzy I don’t know the details, but it is probably similar to how Cuphead came to Switch after being a Microsoft exclusive game.
Nintendo means so much to so many people, developers included. Most of us grew up on their games, many of which made an impact on us as they’re so good. I know if I was a developer I’d want my game on Nintendo’s console. They are masters and pioneers of the gaming world after all!
This game is definitely a perfect fit for the Switch. I hope it sells well, even though there are so many games coming out lately! It's pretty easy, but so much fun overall.
If they make a sequel though, they should add a difficulty selector, for those more used to the genre.
@datamonkey Nicely put
I doubt I'll buy it, I loved it using oculus rift, but it won't have the same wow factor playing on Switch. Still cool for those who haven't played it. I know it's not exactly the same game, but it seems close enough.
Already played this on the PC, but I'm getting this physical on Switch when it releases in December.
The demo won me over when I had zero interest in this. Game seems fun and high quality almost as if Nintendo made it themselves.
@andykara2003 why thank you! 👊
I’m the same way there was much to praise about Dragon Quest XI on Switch as the “Definitive Edition” this game likewise deserves praise!!
Surely DQ was a more intensive game, but it’s not often we switch owners are treated with such a deluxe port job. I am absolutely loving this game so far
Everyone should try the demo on the Switch shop.
I enjoyed the original Super Lucky on PC, and it feels even more polished on Switch. Don't forget that all the DLC is included!
This is a great game and so much fun. Demo helped seal the deal.
Loved this on Xbox; I even got the DLC. Need to look in to the differences.
Another great game coming to Switch!
@AnnoyingFrenzy Like Cuphead and Ori, these guys approach Nintendo for this game to be released on Switch. It has nothing to do with exclusivity but accessibility. Why limit themselves to just Xbox and PC when they can expand their games to Nintendo's audience as well especially when their target audience (which are E rated and up) is bigger on Nintendo's platform?
@retro_player_22 So every developer has to send early game builds to Nintendo to "partner with"?
@AnnoyingFrenzy I don't think Nintendo made this game, I also don't think Nintendo made this game an exclusive. All they did was help out the developers, nothing more nothing less. Xbox must have made the original a timed exclusive (like Dead Rising 4 and Rise of The Tomb Raider) after time was up, the developers started to work on ports for the other platforms. Won't be surprised if they announce a PS4 port next year.
@AnnoyingFrenzy The thing is these guys probably don't know much about the Switch platform so for them to be able to port the game to Switch in good quality they'll need to partner with Nintendo to know the ins and outs of the Switch platform. You had to realize they are required to optimized the game not only for dock mode but also portable mode too and who else but Nintendo knows more about that. Sure they could just get a dev kit and work some magic for the system on their own but it's best to seek the one who made the hardware to know the hardware.
@retro_player_22 If that's the case I'm surprised more developers don't try that.
@MsJubilee I also dont think Nintendo made it, obviously its developed by the studio, but it's just how it's all worded that made me question how much of a hand Nintendo has in it. As far as exclusive, technically not even the Xbox has this version and seeing how Ori and Cuphead have yet to be on PS4 I wouldn't be surprised if this never heads there either.
@AnnoyingFrenzy My guess is that not everyone want to partner with Nintendo. Some do want their games to go their way, a few reasons some avoid partnering with Ninty is that Ninty tend to have a habit of altering contents or make changes to their game such as censorship. Because of this reason some devs tend to just go to other publishers like Capcom, Nicalis, WayForward, or Square Enix to published for them instead or if they had the money self-published it themselves.
@retro_player_22 Hasn't Nintendo gone away from the altering of third party titles recently?
@Spideron I did not hear that, there will be a physical release in December?
@dugan Well, it's listed here in Norway at Elkjøp (maybe the biggest electronics chain in Scandinavia):
https://www.elkjop.no/product/gaming/spill/66608/new-super-lucky-s-tale-switch
And at CoolShop, a large Danish eShop:
https://no.coolshop.com/produkt/super-luckys-tale/AD59FX/
Both have Super Lucky's Tale for Switch listed with release date December 13th.
@retro_player_22 These days Sony censor more than Nintendo. If devs go to other publishers than Nintendo, I'm guessing it's to release across more platforms.
@Spideron Thanks! I did not know that!
