I don't see it happening to be honest. A lot of 3rd parties have already pushed many legacy titles on the eshop as one time purchases anyway so to add the virtual console aspect is just a eshop branding thing.
2023 had Tears of the Kingdom which single handily sold 20million copies. No game in 2024 matched that draw on Switch. Software is a lot to do with why they missed their targets. Make no mistake though the numbers they're on for year 8 are still solid.
So what are we thinking by the end of this fiscal year 152 million units. That's leave just over 8million to smash PS2 record. Honestly I still think it's possible.
If you think this is a scrum attack by Nintendo, you should really consider the wider movements in the market. Palworld are now backed by Sony Music. This suit wouldn't exist if Sony didn't get involved. Simple as that.
Might check these new ones out. I have a YouTube channel showing off mclassic differences in games on older systems. I did upgrade my upscaling hardware with a retro tick 5x pro but haven't had time to make videos for it.
I think I pay something like a £10er a year for the sub + expansion pak. Honestly it's great value. I've a family account and 6 friends all use it, they ping me the money when it re-news. Mario kart dlc, animal crossing dlc, old retro games, cloud saves and now the music app all get used on a regular bases. Compared to prime, Netflix, PSN, gamepass and the multitude of other subscriptions it's ridiculous value for money.
It'll be very interesting to see how dividend payouts get impacted by this. If I have 10 shares today after the split I'd own 100 shares. Dividends get paid out per share so could turn out to be a nice passive income. A lot of tech companies have issued stock splits in their corporate actions reports. Amazon, Nvidia, Google and Tesla all in the past 1-2 years.
My confidence in GameFreak, The Pokemon Company and how the entire franchise is at an all time low. I'm skipping D&P remakes because they're 100% not for me and for the first time in about 5 years I wont be buying a new mainline Pokemon game day one.
Huge changes in terms of project management need to happen before I get excited about a new Pokemon game again. Like give an entry to MonolithSoft and have Nintendo directly oversee development.
I think Dread will hit at least 3 million units worldwide. My twitter feed was full of OLED Switch + Metroid Dread deliveries, made me get FOMO so I ordered an OLED Switch.
My issue with Nintendo's strategy of growth for it business is their complete lack of understanding & unwilliness to implement a robust online service. Honestly 2 companies have come into the game market much later and handed Nintendo their asses every hardware cycle since xbox live first hit, that's nearly 20 years ago. It also doesn't thrill me that their senior Japanese executives seem to favour IP Nintendo hold over other offerings.
The recent share buy-back announcement was a catch-22 for Nintendo, they have a huge amount of cash which they'll use to increase investors value in the company. Which is fine for investors but that also revealed to the market they have no plans to grow the company in new area's or double down on area's they suck at (online services). Nintendo really can become a huge company like Disney has in recent years if they leverage their IP right and explore new ways to earn revenue consistently. That's a huge risk for them and they're waiting for current risks to pay off like Super Mario theme park and the in production Mario movie. People don't realise how big the Super Mario theme park can be for Nintendo, game sales are usually lower in Summer months of the year so why not use Mario to get people's money another way.
@BloodNinja As part of the buy back program those shares will be removed from the market, effectively thrown in the bin - see https://www.investopedia.com/terms/b/buyback.asp. So lets say there are 10 shares in the market each owned by a different person. Nintendo come along and buy 1 of those shares as part of this buy back program and bin that share. That means the remaining 9 shareholders now own a small bit more of the company than before. Current share set up 10/1 = 0.1 New share set up 9/1 = 0.11
@BloodNinja They're buying their shares back to reward investors because they think their shares are under valued. I'm really surprised at how people dont understand this. Also games take years to come to market so to think Nintendo have been 'just coasting' in an attempt to manipulate the market to buy back shares which cost the same as they did a year ago is really far fetched...
I'm not concerned the share price is down, just means NTDOY is 8.8% less expensive to buy than it was a few months ago. In Dec 2018 the share price was around $32 and $25 in Dec 2016.
@SwitchForce No that assumption in the article is completely false and should be removed in my opinion. Looking at how Nintendo pay out dividends (https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/stock/dividend/index.html) to investors and considering that these share will be cancelled once bought back. Investors are set to receive a higher payout. This action is to increase the overall value of investors shares not 'take back control' from outside influence.
Do you people not understand when Nintendo buy these shares back, they get cancelled? This does not give Nintendo more ownership of the company. It increases the value of the left over shares for their existing shareholders lol.
Sorry Tom but this isn't correct.... "The less shares and shareholders the company has the less it is obliged to pay out on dividends, ultimately"
-investopedia.com "A share repurchase shows the corporation believes its shares are undervalued and is an efficient method of putting money back in shareholders’ pockets."
Believe it or not investors are a good thing for a publicly trading company. It means Nintendo can generate cash to make more awesome games, also shareholders want companies they invest in to do as well as possible.
My current Nintendo positions are down around 7% so this share buy-back is coming at a good time for Nintendo when share price isnt at a high it was earlier in the year. Note - I only recently started investing in Nintendo
The Switch is going to be such a huge cash cow for Nintendo for years. Honestly even if they replace it with a traditional home console it can still exist as a dedicated handheld system with a huge catalog of cheap games.
Nintendo should do the right thing here and give refunds. They should change their entire refund policy for the eShop because its simply inadequate and anti-consumer and they should be called out on it.
PlayStation do this often during big events the last notable time was No Mans Sky, they take a crowd funded game and lock it to the platform. I really dont understand why people love them for it, for some reason its fine for PlayStation 3rd party exclusives but not Nintendo (Astral Chain etc...) or Xbox (Recore, Sunset Overdrive). For me this was one of the best looking games shown but I was burnt on PS3 so no chance I'm going back to PlayStation for pretty graphics with gameplay as deep as a puddle.
Switch online is trash, compared to Xbox live. I don't have a PS4 so can't speak for that. Xbox live is an amazing service with dedicated servers for games (not even sure switch online has any) and upgrade offers to game pass ultimate for a little as £1
This game could well be the slap in the face GameFreak need to actually improve areas of the game which haven't changed much since red and blue. In saying that I love shield, it's easily my most played game on the switch ATM. Anyone need trades just let me know
The industry is weak when one dominates like Sony do. 3rd party exclusive games are bad for the industry, paying capcom to keep Monster hunter worlds off the switch is bad for the industry, having a piss poor view on backwards compatibility is bad for the industry and not allowing cross play is bad for the industry.
What do they mean by attach rate? Do they mean software attach rate? Wii software attach rate was close to 9:1 which was similar to consoles at the time (ps3 & xbox360)
Game and GameStop are the last major high street retailers left. The writing is on the wall for them but it will be sad to see the dedicated stores go. When you walk down the high street all you'll have will be women's cloths shops.
This is anti-consumer and will drive 3rd parties and customers away from the platform. Very bad call on Nintendo's end and this article should take a stance for consumers instead of trying to defend Nintendo for controlling costs and potentially reducing 3rd party game sales.
It's going to very interesting to see the sales curve of the Switch in Japan. The country loves handheld systems, I can see Switch easily outsell PS4 on a constant bases but will it outpace 3DS?
I actually dislike Eurogamer reporting. The only saving grace they have is Digital Foundary. The rest of the site can delete itself and its fanboy users from the internet for all I care.
