I had to actually tell GAME how the charizard promotion worked. My local GAME store doesn't have Nintendo Zone so when I told them they give out a code they didn't even know.
Digital Foundry is hands down the best thing on the Eurogamer website. They look at the very technical side of games. Taking mario kart 8 for instance, its very interesting to see Nintendo run the 4 player split screen mode at 60FPS but alternating the frames depending on which quarter of the screen your racing on. Stuff like this is a very interesting design choice in a technical level. Also it was Eurogamer themselves that announced MK8 was 1080p @60FPS so its a sort of egg on their own face situation haha
This is a good example if using statistics to your advantage. Don't include handheld console games, because that would just push their new IP's further down the list. I'd also argue the '(value)' aspect of the list. Skylanders makes Activision more money that COD for instance.
I think QOL already exists for Nintendo hardware users (Miiverse). It will be a cloud based platform from which people can access from many different devices i.e. mobiles, tablets, consoles and pc's. What will it actually provide is the mystery but I think it has to have something to do with the casual end of the video games business. It must be free or very cheap, generate a lot of traffic that gives people instant exposure to NIntendo products and services.
The reason why sony and microsoft can afford to launch more advanced hardware than NIntendo is because their other business areas take the financial hit during R&D. This move helps Nintendo potentially level that playing field.
I'd be happy to see Nintendo buy stuff like Studio Ghibli, it would help establish their brand outside videogames. Also help getting exclusive rights if any future games developments where to come along...
The only time I buy physical games is a) if they ship with limited edition goodies like Mario Kart 8 and TWW HD b) if third parties aren't on the eShop like Call of Duty c) there is no sign of a game getting discounted on the eShop like Batman Arkham City. In other words the games cost far to much for far to long.
For everything else I buy digital because it's much more better. I love that my 3DS has my entire game collection in it at all times. My WiiU is becoming a game center too, with over 25 games ready to play as soon as it gets turned on.
Today Nintendo news carpet bombed my twitter feed. First every post was about the poor WiiU sales then about Nintendo making another loss, now this Ruby and Sapphire remake.
I'm with PvtOttobot on this. The E3 Demo is much better than this. I'm not a fan of the Unreal engine either for that matter. Nintendo make much better looking games, which run at a much more solid frame rate.
Its disappointing but I think the asking price was to high. Maybe they should focus on 1 episode and see how the market reacts. From what I've seen it got me interested. I'm really looking forward to Moon Chronicles, I missed out on it on the DS.
3DS down over 30% for YOY numbers... That's bad, very bad considering the 3DS missed is forecast last year. Nintendo have a lot of work cut out for themselves.
I for one am very interested in this game. Played it in London at Eurogamer Expo last September. It has a great art style, makes great use of the gamepad and of course has fantastic audio. The game play is very relaxed which works well if your hungover haha
I don't see the point of a PS4 of Xbox One considering what my PC can do. If the industry is moving towards Sony and Microsoft I will happily miss out. What I don't understand is the thinking that 3rd party games are always better on playstation and Xbox.
Love the new direction and Knuckles new design makes sense to me. He punches things, so they made him look like a boxer.... Why do people not see this?
@Geonjaha 'What makes you think fans asking for it over and over was the cause of release?' I just think Miiverse had a big part to play in the decision made to re-release Earthbound on virtual console. Before Miiverse fans (of any game franchise) didn't have a direct channel to Nintendo and I'm pretty sure they said during a Direct they were listening to what fans wanted more than before (while showing a small film of Miiverse communities). Your totally right it is Square Enix decision in the end of the day but if Nintendo offered to take over translation and publishing duties Square may be tempted. Seeing the WiiU poor sales it's not likely though.
We should all hit the Dragon Quest Miiverse community page. They listened to people asking for Earth Bound. I'm actually half expecting Nintendo to announce the western release date for this sometime in 2014 AND Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate WiiU exclusive.... well I can dream right...
Played the demo @ eurogamer last year. I have to say the game is very interesting. In some ways it reminds me of Flower on the ps3 which was a great hangover game haha
The 3DS/2DS had a fantastic year of solid releases. I'd be surprised if it wasn't the best selling system. Nintendo's focus should be to replicate that success this year for the WiiU.
Having recently been laid-off myself just before Christmas, I can say it's very good that Miyamoto-san always asks if they are enjoying themselves as they create new games. I had a blast playing Punch-out on the Wii with my mates, you can see the enjoyment the studio had while creating that game. I haven't played Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon yet but I will get round to it at some point. I am somewhat concerned about the size of the studio, I suppose I'd like to see Nintendo buy them out right and hire more staff for larger WiiU projects but I think that could be the case for every Nintendo studio. All in all though I look forward to playing more from Next Level Games.
Funny enough I got chatting to @imageform at Eurogamer too. I had no idea what the game was like until I played it at the Nintendo stand. Very good game, haven't picked it up yet but will be very soon.
The guy simply doesn't understand the games industry and Nintendo's position in it. I get the impression from his blog he thinks the 3ds is just another iteration of the DS, when its actually a new generation of handheld. So his number comparisons are simply incorrect. Apple are dropping market share to Android at an alarming rate, but this is covered up by the fact that the mobile and tablet markets are still rising.
So in terms of pure economics, if we take the sales of the 3ds in 2012 and compare them with the sales of the iphone. Yes the iphone will have sold much more but when you look at the actual market share of each device in it's respective market a different picture becomes clear. The 3ds experience lots of growth from the release of stellar first party games. The iphone yes sold 'x' more units than the year previously but compared to its competitors it sold much less resulting in a lower market share overall.
From that evidence an argument can actually be built that ios devices NEED Nintendo games more than its competitors, to have an edge. But because ios devices are multi-functional devices (a thing he argues that makes them so great!) there is no way in knowing how Nintendo games will benefit the platform if at all because consumers will expect cheap software.
The link will back up my point however my example is based on 2012 when the link actually highlights this year (2013). http://techcrunch.com/2013/08/07/android-nears-80-market-share-in-global-smartphone-shipments-as-ios-and-blackberry-share-slides-per-idc/
@WiiUExposed you do realise that's just Nintendo's version of backing up your system account settings. Makes me laugh when people say 'Because you don't have to go through a crappy transfer process to recover your digital content...' because I did exactly that when I bought a ps3 slim.
It's very interesting how many people are actually taking what Reggie is saying out of context. Most people compare Nintendo's offering with what it's competitors have, when in the above snippet he is comparing their growth in the digital space to Nintendo's previous offerings. If you think about it that way the eShop is done right. Reggie is just saying we're making more money from digital content now than we did. I like the eShop, it fair to indies, it's constantly updated (I'd prefer a better spread of games though), it has demos, it has screenshots and video's, it links to and from miiverse, updates will come. Nintendo announced you'll be able to make transactions from web browsers and smart phones by the end of the year, that's a better first year start than Wii, DSi and even PS3. Personally when I buy a games console it lasts me the entire generation, I also play games my friends don't own. I've most recently bought Fire Emblem when they would buy Call of Duty or Fifa, I also usually buy single player games and I just don't trade games in much. As for account systems, I understand why they are important for people but the terms and conditions vary a lot from different hardware manufactures. I know Sony only let you download digital content to 3 different systems to me that's not much better from Nintendo's approach. I can not speak for the 360 as I do not own one but I'm sure the term will be different again. Can I see Nintendo offering virtual console games across systems in the future, I'd sure love to see it but I'm not sure it will happen between the 3ds/2ds eshop and the wiiu eshop.
@Falco my tv does have its own settings separate to the WiiU. Alternatively I can just use a Wii AV lead instead of the HDMI lead... Did you think of that genius?
What makes Sony's and Microsoft's system so good? I've transferred all my digital games from my Wii to my WiiU and my dsi to my 3ds from my 3ds to my 3ds xl.
@Falco the colour of the WiiU game boxes are hideous. It's the worst blue in the world. Also you can lend your games to friends, I don't know anyone else who owns a WiiU or a 3ds for that make, in fact everyone had Wii and ds's right... guess what I never lent those games.
I'm going to something unpopular here. I think Nintendo's account system is better than Sony's and Microsoft's. The target 'system' to have is STEAM or ORIGIN.
@datamonkey maybe Nintendo wanted to build a games console and explore different game play mechanics. Putting an age on hardware that hasn't had time to prove itself is quite foolish in the games industry. Cutting edge hardware doesn't guarantee your buying the best games console.
For all the people who say 'Its 2013 Nintendo should have put a larger hard drive in the system'. I say 'Its 2013 and you don't have an external hard dive?'.
I find it very strange that people would pay an extra say £50 for a built in 250GB, when that £50 could get you an external 1TB drive.
Personally I'd rather Nintendo include a digital optical out instead of beefing up the hard drive.
SEGA aren't lazy for releasing a port. Nintendo are doing that with The Wind Waker, and to be honest I'd rather play Yakuza 1&2. I still have my original copy of TWW but I've never played Yakuza 2.
I wish we got more of this sort of thing except pushed to my house. I have 2 3ds' a wii and a wiiu. It'd be great if I booted up a pokemon game and I got a message saying, 'your pokegear detects a pokemon in your house!'. I'd be playing pokemon everyday if it was like that.
Andy Green. There is little clarification as to what a 'StreetPass Relay' is in the article. Can you please update your piece with this information. Do you know how it will work? Has Nintendo clarified it further? I'm only posting this as I'm still confused as to what you are reporting here.
