Re: Digital Foundry Pins Down Mario Kart 8's Resolution and Framerate

ZombieTechpad

Digital Foundry is hands down the best thing on the Eurogamer website. They look at the very technical side of games. Taking mario kart 8 for instance, its very interesting to see Nintendo run the 4 player split screen mode at 60FPS but alternating the frames depending on which quarter of the screen your racing on. Stuff like this is a very interesting design choice in a technical level.
Also it was Eurogamer themselves that announced MK8 was 1080p @60FPS so its a sort of egg on their own face situation haha

Re: Satoru Iwata Believes Nintendo Can Establish a "New Core Business" to Join Video Games

I think QOL already exists for Nintendo hardware users (Miiverse). It will be a cloud based platform from which people can access from many different devices i.e. mobiles, tablets, consoles and pc's. What will it actually provide is the mystery but I think it has to have something to do with the casual end of the video games business. It must be free or very cheap, generate a lot of traffic that gives people instant exposure to NIntendo products and services.

Re: Download Sales On Nintendo Formats Have Trebled In The Last Two Years

ZombieTechpad

The only time I buy physical games is
a) if they ship with limited edition goodies like Mario Kart 8 and TWW HD
b) if third parties aren't on the eShop like Call of Duty
c) there is no sign of a game getting discounted on the eShop like Batman Arkham City. In other words the games cost far to much for far to long.

For everything else I buy digital because it's much more better. I love that my 3DS has my entire game collection in it at all times. My WiiU is becoming a game center too, with over 25 games ready to play as soon as it gets turned on.

Re: Matters Of Import: A Peek Into The Tragically Unobtainable World Of Dragon Quest X

@Geonjaha 'What makes you think fans asking for it over and over was the cause of release?'
I just think Miiverse had a big part to play in the decision made to re-release Earthbound on virtual console. Before Miiverse fans (of any game franchise) didn't have a direct channel to Nintendo and I'm pretty sure they said during a Direct they were listening to what fans wanted more than before (while showing a small film of Miiverse communities).
Your totally right it is Square Enix decision in the end of the day but if Nintendo offered to take over translation and publishing duties Square may be tempted. Seeing the WiiU poor sales it's not likely though.

Re: Next Level Games "Doing Only Nintendo Products Now"

ZombieTechpad

Having recently been laid-off myself just before Christmas, I can say it's very good that Miyamoto-san always asks if they are enjoying themselves as they create new games. I had a blast playing Punch-out on the Wii with my mates, you can see the enjoyment the studio had while creating that game. I haven't played Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon yet but I will get round to it at some point. I am somewhat concerned about the size of the studio, I suppose I'd like to see Nintendo buy them out right and hire more staff for larger WiiU projects but I think that could be the case for every Nintendo studio. All in all though I look forward to playing more from Next Level Games.

Re: Without iOS Support Nintendo "Doesn’t Reach Today’s Kids" Says Apple Advocate John Gruber

ZombieTechpad

The guy simply doesn't understand the games industry and Nintendo's position in it. I get the impression from his blog he thinks the 3ds is just another iteration of the DS, when its actually a new generation of handheld. So his number comparisons are simply incorrect. Apple are dropping market share to Android at an alarming rate, but this is covered up by the fact that the mobile and tablet markets are still rising.
So in terms of pure economics, if we take the sales of the 3ds in 2012 and compare them with the sales of the iphone. Yes the iphone will have sold much more but when you look at the actual market share of each device in it's respective market a different picture becomes clear. The 3ds experience lots of growth from the release of stellar first party games. The iphone yes sold 'x' more units than the year previously but compared to its competitors it sold much less resulting in a lower market share overall.
From that evidence an argument can actually be built that ios devices NEED Nintendo games more than its competitors, to have an edge. But because ios devices are multi-functional devices (a thing he argues that makes them so great!) there is no way in knowing how Nintendo games will benefit the platform if at all because consumers will expect cheap software.
The link will back up my point however my example is based on 2012 when the link actually highlights this year (2013).

Re: We're Getting Digital Right On 3DS And Wii U, Insists Reggie

ZombieTechpad

It's very interesting how many people are actually taking what Reggie is saying out of context. Most people compare Nintendo's offering with what it's competitors have, when in the above snippet he is comparing their growth in the digital space to Nintendo's previous offerings.
If you think about it that way the eShop is done right. Reggie is just saying we're making more money from digital content now than we did.
I like the eShop, it fair to indies, it's constantly updated (I'd prefer a better spread of games though), it has demos, it has screenshots and video's, it links to and from miiverse, updates will come. Nintendo announced you'll be able to make transactions from web browsers and smart phones by the end of the year, that's a better first year start than Wii, DSi and even PS3.
Personally when I buy a games console it lasts me the entire generation, I also play games my friends don't own. I've most recently bought Fire Emblem when they would buy Call of Duty or Fifa, I also usually buy single player games and I just don't trade games in much.
As for account systems, I understand why they are important for people but the terms and conditions vary a lot from different hardware manufactures. I know Sony only let you download digital content to 3 different systems to me that's not much better from Nintendo's approach. I can not speak for the 360 as I do not own one but I'm sure the term will be different again. Can I see Nintendo offering virtual console games across systems in the future, I'd sure love to see it but I'm not sure it will happen between the 3ds/2ds eshop and the wiiu eshop.

Re: We're Getting Digital Right On 3DS And Wii U, Insists Reggie

ZombieTechpad

What makes Sony's and Microsoft's system so good? I've transferred all my digital games from my Wii to my WiiU and my dsi to my 3ds from my 3ds to my 3ds xl.
@Falco the colour of the WiiU game boxes are hideous. It's the worst blue in the world. Also you can lend your games to friends, I don't know anyone else who owns a WiiU or a 3ds for that make, in fact everyone had Wii and ds's right... guess what I never lent those games.

Re: Talking Point: The Wii U's Limited Hard Drive Space and Future Install Headaches

ZombieTechpad

For all the people who say 'Its 2013 Nintendo should have put a larger hard drive in the system'. I say 'Its 2013 and you don't have an external hard dive?'.

I find it very strange that people would pay an extra say £50 for a built in 250GB, when that £50 could get you an external 1TB drive.

Personally I'd rather Nintendo include a digital optical out instead of beefing up the hard drive.
