@faint ports and lazy remakes shouldn’t be nominated for anything. Play something like Ghosts of Tsushima and name something Nintendo has done recently that matches that quality.
@Expa0 not much. Metroid is a solid game for sure but not no way is it game of the year. I didn’t push any envelopes. It didn’t push 2D games at all. The game is very similar to past games. It’s short and some of that time is back tracking. If Nintendo had made it in house, it would have been game of the year talk.
It made the controls a must have. I’m not sure Nintendo has justified any of their other recent experiments as must haves. They complained other companies didn’t use the WiiU pad, but they barely used it themselves. They never showed why We had to have it. These expensive Switch controllers are the same. All this technology for a couple of gimmick gameplays. Nintendo has yet to show the general public why the extra cost of the tech is warranted.
Everybody should play what they like. For me, I’d rather play something new. These games require a lot of time and there are so many new games to experience. I don’t know how people have time to play all these ports. I spent a couple months with animal crossing and that’s plenty for me. When it starts to feel like a job, I’m done.
@Zag_Man yeah I agree it’s the same way to kill the EMMIs and it’s not all that fun to do gameplay wise. What we personally give the game is different than what a website reviewer would give it. They need to be more critical and not a fanboy score. I’d probably give it an 8.5 because of the reasons I mentioned. Nintendo can make more 10s than anybody. This just isn’t one of them (and again, it wasn’t really Nintendo).
@Zag_Man I agree the EMMIs were a bit annoying. Even worse, they were repetitive. It’s a short game and EMMIs and Chozo Soldiers were used over and over with little differences. It’s a solid fun game for sure, but not the 10 this site gave it. It’s not a 10 in graphics, gameplay, originality, music, replay ability or any category. I’m glad the game is doing well. I want more Metroid. This was more of the same of what we’ve played on DS (which is a good thing). The next 2D game needs to push 2D Metroid to the next level. More involvement from Nintendo can do that (instead of farming everything out).
@Dethmunk MK9 is coming. Zero
Doubt. MK 8 is a great game but to say you can’t top it so why try is very short sighted. Not many developers can compete with an in house Nintendo title when they really want to push the bar. They haven’t pushed anything because people are paying full price for ports.
@Ogbert I wouldn’t call it a console. It’s a handheld you can hookup to a tv if your want. Switch is a great place for ports and a few good Nintendo titles. Even most new Nintendo games on it are HD versions of what we had before. BOTW was a WiiU title. No franchises have been pushed to the next level like MK8 was.
Great news for me. For somebody who has no interest in full priced ports or some of the franchises Nintendo has focused on lately, I hope Nintendo will focus on some neglected franchises. Nintendo isn’t a company that I expect 7s or 8s from. They can make 9s and 10s when they want to.
Competition is a great thing. Nintendo has none and they responded by having full priced ports and lack of great first party games. They charge premium price for old tech. I don’t find the the Switch comfortable to play. The pro controller is great but the joycons etc are meh.
Now do the profit margin of lazy ports.
It doesn’t matter if it’s $400. Some would pay for whatever Nintendo releases. Same with the fans of other systems. What does it matter ? I guess it only matters for those who have limited gaming budgets. If a kid can’t afford a $60 port, it’s because other fans are willing to pay whatever. If fans would stop, Nintendo would adjust and still make a huge profit. By there’s a line at the vampire’s door begging to give their blood.
If fans could sit the OLED out a few months the price would drop and Nintendo still wins.
@Petew yeah, companies lose money on newest hi tech gaming hardware.
But $350 for 4 year old tech that wasn’t state of the art back then. Nintendo is making a nice profit on these.
You put Nintendo in your will and they get to inherit $20, they will put a pillow over your face while you sleep(just like many companies).
I saw 6s elsewhere so I knew 7 here.
Nintendo isn’t a 6-7 company. They farm out these games and just ok isn’t worthy of the Nintendo name. Where are the true first party games ? Yes their masterpieces take time. But this is ridiculous.
@commentlife I agree. The Switch really is a handheld you can play on your tv. But now they charge console price. Nothing Nintendo showed was innovating or takes anything to the next level.
At least it’s not a port of an existing game. But it was developed for the DS.
I’ll decide if it’s worth it after I play it. This doesn’t look like a $60 game. It looks like an HD DS game.
This article really doesn’t make any points. If a company spends 15 years on a 2D game, I shouldn’t have to make up that cost. Nintendo will charge whatever it thinks it can get away with. There’s no justification of the cost of their ports in terms of development. They are just being a vampire like most companies and people line up showing their necks.
There have behind closed door impressions of the game that have been very mixed. Re-using a generic enemy over and over to hunt you. Graphics are just ok. 2D games can wow you. Nobody is wowing yet.
You get zero points for ports or recycled content. Zelda 2 coming 2022. Metroid 5 looks pretty good but does it blow you away for a 2D game ?
In what way did Nintendo take anything to the next level?
I don’t own the new Xbox but I will in the future.
And if Nintendo would show a title screen for a new Fzero, some here would say game of show.
Must be great to be Nintendo. They can port and recycle old content and people bow down. Metroid was cool. I’m not a big fan of some unbeatable enemy stalking you the entire game. Replay isn’t great. But I don’t know how much of the game involves that. Zelda is still too far off. Mario party is a recycled port. Monkey ball port? Lol. First party games makes Nintendo stand out. Not these IPs they farm out. And what do we have coming soon that’s true first party?
Metroid 5 was the only thing worth mentioning. Zelda is sometime 2022. It’s disappointing they can’t make a direct sequel so many years after a WiiU game. Mostly ports. Mario party is recycled old games. But none of it matters. Nintendo is making huge profits for doing very little.
Leaking a game like a new Mario, Zelda etc is a big deal. Leaking Mario Rabbids sends zero shockwaves. I’m sure it will be a solid game, but it’s not the game fans are rabbid for.
Not sure it’s the type of game that warrants a surprise announcement. There are some Nintendo fans that will be happy. But the gaming world overall will shrug.
The controllers are priced high for tech that’s not warranted. Nintendo blamed developers for not utilizing the WiiU screen pad but barely used it in their first party games. Sure, some people like the gimmicky uses of the controllers. But there is no must have game for Switch because of these controls. Surely they can give us a $60 port of Wii Sports.
@kobashi100
Nintendo makes incredible games. Some of the best ever. But that doesn’t mean Captain Toad is a better game than God of War because Sony marked it down to 19.99. Nintendo uses that strategy because it makes some consumers believe their games are worth more. Psychologically they can play some like a fiddle. There are plenty of non game companies who do that. But it only works in the gaming industry with Nintendo. There’s way too much competition on Sony and MS systems.
@kobashi100 That was my point. Many Nintendo fans are content in paying full price for ports. There’s no hate for Nintendo being like most other companies. If victims knock on a vampire’s door and say suck my blood, you don’t blame the vampire. But if you think Nintendo is a company that cares about its fans more than Sony or MS, you are delusional.
MK8 is 7 years old. And many fans want to keep playing the same game because they can’t imagine another game offering anything more.
This is why Nintendo has no incentive to do much besides charge full price for ports.
If you don’t think Mario Kart can be taken to another level as a series, PLEASE do not go into game development. Don’t make movies or tv shows.
Lol of course. It’s also why they create artificial shortages too. Nintendo also doesn’t drop prices of games because it makes some consumers believe the games are worth more than other games.
@Amin_Parker absolutely. Sony can’t just release a 4k version of Gods of War and charge full price. And it’s not because GOW is a lesser game than Pikmin 3. There’s too much competition for new big releases and Sony/MS fans aren’t willing to pay whatever the price tag says. Sony has to spend $100 million plus on a new big release. Nintendo can spend 1/100 on an HD port and get full price.
@Anti-Matter I don’t think you can find PS5s to buy, so that’s one reason you can’t really compare. Also, they are significantly different. Switch is a hand held system that relies on ports. These ports wouldn’t sell as well if Switch was just a home console. While some might be only to buy one, I think somebody who buys one over the other are looking for different things.
100%. Nintendo is charging full price for lazy ports. Fans line up to overpay so why should they change? If fans could delay buying these games, Nintendo would change their strategy. I’ve been really disappointed with new Nintendo games on Switch. Many games like Luigi’s Mansion was farmed out and it showed. It was good but far from a must play. I’m excited about BOTW2 and Metroid, but I’m not looking forward to much else.
@michellelynn0976 what Nintendo game has been perfection as of late ? And yes, the market allows Nintendo to charge whatever they want. Fanboys would pay $60 for super Mario world if Nintendo asked.
@TheFrenchiestFry that’s the problem I have. $60 for a straight port is taking advantage of their fans. $60 for a new game is to pay for research and development of that game. The overhead for these ports is a very small fraction of a new game. But fans will pay for it so Nintendo isn’t going to try. No new Mario Kart in 7 years. Metroid should be sold to a company that will use the IP.
