Famitsu's Japanese chart figures are now in for the week ending 10th October, revealing that Metroid Dread has gone straight to the top of the pile on its debut week.
Nintendo's latest Switch exclusive managed to fend off the threat of Far Cry 6, selling 86,798 physical units in its opening weekend. For comparison's sake, Ubisoft's new first-person adventure managed just over 50,000 sales across both PS4 and PS5.
Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! also entered the software charts top ten this week, debuting in eighth place, with plenty of Switch's biggest names making up the rest of the order.
Here are the top ten (first numbers are this week's estimated sales, followed by total sales):
- [NSW] Metroid Dread (Nintendo, 10/08/21) – 86,798 (New)
- [PS4] Far Cry 6 (Ubisoft, 10/07/21) – 34,219 (New)
- [PS5] Far Cry 6 (Ubisoft, 10/07/21) – 16,686 (New)
- [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo, 04/28/17) – 12,257 (4,085,509)
- [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo, 12/07/18) – 11,936 (4,450,954)
- [NSW] Ring Fit Adventure (Nintendo, 10/18/19) – 11,257 (2,862,651)
- [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft, 06/21/18) – 10,699 (2,225,165)
- [NSW] Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! (Playism, 10/17/21) – 9,513 (New)
- [PS4] Lost Judgment (Sega, 09/24/21) – 8,589 (140,834)
- [NSW] WarioWare: Get It Together! (Nintendo, 09/10/21) – 7,787 (144,966)
The hardware chart welcomes a newcomer this week, as the Switch OLED makes its debut. As reported earlier today, it's off to a pretty modest start thanks to supply issues, but comfortably leads the pecking order. Here are this week's figures, followed by lifetime sales in brackets:
- Switch OLED Model – 138,409 (New)
- Switch – 32,792 (17,198,146)
- PlayStation 5 – 13,786 (922,929)
- Switch Lite – 8,650 (4,088,784)
- Xbox Series S – 2,920 (38,307)
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – 2,099 (177,974)
- PlayStation 4 – 961 (7,813,467)
- Xbox Series X – 527 (64,284)
- New 2DS LL (including 2DS) – 405 (1,174,950)
Any surprises this week? Let us know in the comments.

I figured Metroid would be a bigger name in Japan than Far Cry.
Those are really good numbers in Japan for Far Cry
YES! LET'S GO METROID!
First time EVER Metroid topped the chart in Japan, congrats!
I mean I can't imagine a game like Far Cry being popular in Japan anyway
Good to see the PS5 beasting those switch lite figures!!!
I'm surprised that FC6 is so high on the chart. I'm under the impression that Japan generally dislikes western games that aren't Minecraft.
Far Cry may not be a huge game for Japan-but you also need to remember Metroid isn’t the biggest seller over there either.
Edit: Well, this week it is haha!
I'm glad that Metroid is doing well. Also, although this isn't Nintendo related, compared to the other Xbox consoles, the Series S isn't doing too badly. Maybe Microsoft will finally experience some success in Japan.
@progx well, Metroid has never topped the charts before, Far Cry has.

Game of the Year! Wonderful to see Metroid finally have its moment!
Had there not been supply constraints OLED console wise would have sold more in UK as they all gone. I guess the same is for elsewhere.
Pre-orders are back up for the 22/10/2021.
Surprising, considering Metroid Prime is an FPS. I figured Far Cry would be just as popular.
Even tho i aint gonna buy the Oled, i am not suprised it sold wel. It looks fresh and Nintendos commercial make it look like a new switch lol. I like the color tho also a better battery, and bigger screen and lil bit more memory is always good. I still play the OG switch if it breaks i am not gonna buy a new one. After this it will be steam deck, unless Nintendo reveals a new 4K model by december, i will cancel my preorder lol.
A digital Xbox is outselling the digital Playstation in Japan, and Nintendo has 4 consoles on store shelves this holidays
What a time to be alive
Outsells all Xbox Series SX sold in an entire year in one week. Impressive. MOST impressive.
@mariomaster96 well it's at number 2 🙄
Metroid. SMT. Two Pokemon games.
Nintendo-exclusive titles are going to be topping the charts frequently over the next few months.

This was the biggest retail launch ever for a Metroid game in Japan. Metroid Dread has pretty much already outsold every Metroid title post-Fusion, and that's without digital sales.
@BloodNinja I mean, PS4 sales are roughly in line with JP Metroid Prime Hunters' first week sales of 32,613.
Next highest Metroid first week sales in JP than I can see was Fusion with 49.680, so this debut is great, especially when you factor in digital.
Edit: Now I've double-checked due to the helpful post above, original MP had higher first week sales in JP of 39,828, I originally put Prime Hunters since bizarrely, it seemed as if it did better (because on DS for instance), but no, my fault for not checking properly.
the bosses in metroid dread are seriously hard especially the chozo warriors.
Like others probably said already, I was impressed for a brief moment, and then I saw the word “Japanese.” 😏
EDIT: This OLED model may just be what the Switch needs to keep its momentum long enough to beat the PS4! 😃 (Lets be real, it’s not gonna touch the PS2...)
@Friendly Far Cry 6 is a great game, but Metroid Dread is definitely better. I see why it wasn't at the top. Completely forgot about Far Cry 5 being number 1 when it came out.
Wow to Metroid Dread not only just beat one but both Far Cry 6 ports combined which is impressive. Those games so far must be crying at the moment. Nice to see Ring Fit Adventure back in the chart again and it's great to see Switch OLED numbers in the chart. Would be surprise if Switch OLED sales beat PS5 sales by the end of the fiscal year.
@geordie Yeah with 51k (combined) sales despite being a new release
@RiasGremory Are they harder than the bosses in Dead Cells?
@Specter_of-the_OLED I see what you did there
Excellent news! Keep the Metroid coming.
Makes sense, FC6 seemed to come out with a whimper, I barely saw any hype for it on release, whereas everybody’s been hyping Dread since the day it was announced.
@russell-marlow They're harder than the bosses in Gyromite, I hear.
All I know is that Metroid dread is incredible, please just do more of that, I’m already wanting the next one. Do it
@RiasGremory I was really dreading(lol) the chozo warriors, but I realized pretty quick that you can just flash shift over them, missile, rinse repeat. I know the difficulty varies for everyone, but as someone who sucks at hard boss fights, I found the ones in dread to be deceptively fair and simple
Switch rox, bro.
And Minecraft is yet again on the list. That game is so popular in Japan.
Surprised to see Japanese players enjoying Far Cry 6 though
@BloodNinja Well, you don't need to use a Nintendo exclusive peripheral in order to play Metroid Dread.
@russell-marlow I don't understand the reference.
2.8 million units of Ring Fit Adventure sold!?!?!!!
Nintendo needs to make a new game that uses the ring con.
Great news for me. For somebody who has no interest in full priced ports or some of the franchises Nintendo has focused on lately, I hope Nintendo will focus on some neglected franchises. Nintendo isn’t a company that I expect 7s or 8s from. They can make 9s and 10s when they want to.
Good for you Far Cry. Keep it up.
Proves there is still a place and a demand for 2D gaming, and rightly so.
@BloodNinja
Challenge for you.
Play Metroid Dread with DDR Gamecube mat. 😛😆
So glad to see Metroid is back better than ever! (well, almost)
Modest?! Those sale are hugely impressive to me.
@Anti-Matter But I hate the game! I played R-Type 3 on a dance mat, back in the day! That was...an experience LOL
Super Monkeyball really driving those OLED sales...
Can not wait to start Metroid at the weekend
@BloodNinja You need the R.O.B. robot peripheral to play Gyromite on the NES.
@russell-marlow Wait a sec, did you take my joke up there seriously?
Well deserved for Dread. It is so curseword good!
Well cool but sales will drop off next week when Japanese find about the ex Mercury Steam employee who textured a model for a couple of months as an intern on a new Metroid game and now his name isn't on the credits.
Great to see the strong start for Dread in Japan. Really happy to see it do well in UK and Japan, eager to see how well it did in the U.S. which will be the game's biggest market for sure.
Let's GOOO! Maketh Metroid expand more and more.. Glad people are still picking it up and having fun with their first in the series. Enjoy
Omg I can't wait for Metroid movie!!!😍 This is the time!
Fully deserved
OLED getting a nice launch despite stock issues
@Xaessya Far Cry 5 had a bigger launch.
I tried Far Cry 6 on PC, it's really a meh game. It's Assassin's Creed but modern and less sneaky. Most Ubisoft games feel very much the same. And even the story isn't that good. A true 4/10 for me.
Japan has been like "Metroid? What's that?" for most of the series' lifespan. I'm really happy to see its selling better than the LTD of most entries right out of the gate!
And this isn't even counting digital downloads!
@mariomaster96 I'm still surprised that a game that's combined second and third place is an indication that the Japanese buying public are not in to the game.....
@russell-marlow yes
Metroid is a JPN game and they would support it for National reasons. Also everyone can play the game and enjoy it.
@Ralizah Those 4 games are the best Christmas gifts
@BloodNinja Maybe...
@russell-marlow It’s ok, my humor is pretty dry. It’s the British genes, I get people at work all the time. They think I’m serious when I’m talking about ridiculous nonsense. No Jess, I do not REALLY want you to drive through the wall.... 😂
