Personally though, I'd like to see the Mario Maker concept taken further with real DLC along the lines of adding physics/animations from other characters. Admittedly it breaks many Mario mechanics and takes a lot of extra sprites and models, but I'd like to play as Samus complete with blaster and charge my through original Mario Bros levels, as Link, slashing through and as Captain Falcon.. doing his thing too. Punching?
Anyway, someone made an indie game very much along those lines...
Good, frankly. What kind of progressive nation really promotes the kind of boobery that Japan does? I love much of Japan's output, but gender equality is not among that.
Speaking the obvious, but I'd love a Rune Factory Frontier for WiiU (or should that be NX now?) that isn't Tides of Destiny... I need that combination of small, cosy town and relatively short but numerous dungeons. Love RF4 but the final dungeon is such a massive hurdle it's sort of put me off finishing the story!
I would also like to see a return to the older "everyone moves independently" way of doing things, with proper stars, et cetera.
I'd also like the mini-games to return to more "Mario" mechanics, with running jumping, karting, tennis..ing.. being the order of things. The stuff that you had to do in other Mario games I suppose.
That said.. it's pre-ordered, so clearly I can't listen to myself.
What I wouldn't give for someone like Wayforward to make a Mario game with this sort of visual style. So yeah, a 'true' 2D mario that looks like Wario the Shake Dimension.
I own two Virtual Boys (one broke..). Stupidest things I ever bought. Got a bunch of games et cetera but frankly they're near unplayable. I just want to be able to say "I did that stupid thing".
If the second breaks, I won't be scouring ebay again.
I don't mind the review, but there's no denying that a score of 5 makes people go "ouch!" these days instead of "this is exactly in the middle of 1 and 10 and should therefore be taken as an average title". I long for a world where 7 means "really good" instead of average. Should we just mark everything out of 5 I wonder?
Anyway, I found the music comment to be a bit harsh. I personally love the overworld music and the up-tempo battle stuff. The underwater world music was charming, as well as wandering around Auria.. anyway, point being, the music in this game is serviceable with the odd stand out.
Fair's fair though, the localisation was shocking!
She talks like FLUDD... I cant quite figure out what accent that is.
Still, fun stuff! Though I am about as useless in the kitchen as any one can be. I am impressed by her creativity, but also her ability not to shout "FFS MAKE FZERO" at the Nintendo execs in front of her.
I bought the disc.. I don't love all the sports, but I'm a sucker for a retail release of such things. It's a decent enough price on Shopto if ever you're interested, particularly if you end up with a Gold membership because you've spent far, far too much money in recent years feeding this awful habit..
Backed. I want more of this asymmetry I was promised. Even something as simple as the "Pad player" being Bowser in Mario Party hasn't happened yet. An F Zero track generator where the pad allows you to draw, pull and twist a loop into shapes? I feel Wii U Battleships should exist by now also...
Anyway, backed this game because it delivers on that promise! I've grown to love RTS fantasy in recent months so this came along at exactly the right time for me.
Don't say this often, but I really hope DLC is a thing for this Mario Kart. I'd be such a sucker for older and of course new additional tracks on this edition.
This and Smash Bros. DLC would be so easy and feel a little more worthwhile than some 3DS offerings so far.
Just f'ing make it already. I've no doubt such a campaign would be covered on all sorts of sites and make its money. Just look at the coverage there "not being a campaign yet" has gained.
I don't know if I'd bother with online Mario to be honest. I'd sooner play the game alone if I'm in the house on my own and locally with friends. I don't think we'd get much joy from playing online together where you don't get the same piss-taking that makes it fun.
This was never going to be a popular opinion, and I applaud the stones displayed in posting it. I agree with some of the points and completely understand why you would feel that way. A lot of the comments on here are a little disappointing.
With that said, my copy arrived this morning... not that I'll get a chance to play it until Friday due to work commitments, but I'm going to play it for the computer game it is, rather than a chance to act out some sinister desires.
It becomes rather difficult to explain why the random acts of violence become entertaining after a time, but its likely to be down the fact that despite all the attempts at realism in there, Grand Theft Auto does not feel realistic. The presence of such exaggerated personalities and impossible stunts prevents it falling into the same abyss Manhunt toppled into.
Oh, and I will also playing Wind Waker to -death-.
Regular, earthbo... er, Mushroom Kingdom bound action please. Collect 120 of something in 12 open levels or whatever, that aren't planets or of a single, tropical theme.
I just want the Mario 64 sequel or whatever you want to call it. I don't imagine I'm the only one but I've been too lazy to read up.
Hard to argue with him really. I mean, he does strike one point, people who want to play Nintendo games will buy a Nintendo console and there are still plenty of them.
I don't see Nintendo as being in trouble, though almost certainly a distant third. I am increasingly of the opinion that Nintendo's home-hardware's days are numbered because the profits on hardware are so small these days. Nintendo stand to make a lot more money by going multiplatform and selling only software.
Reading up, I'd buy a remade Majora's Mask, a ported Skyward sword without motion controls ( the diagonal slashes would have to go I guess... most other puzzles could be amended to flicks of the stick left and right ) along with this Wind Waker port (it's not strictly speaking a remake is it ).
With all that said, I'm happy for Nintendo to 'plug the leak' for the moment, but I'd better have something to really keep my interest in late 2014 beyond online Smash Bros.
Oh, DLC? Look at Skyrim. Once the main quest is finished, NPCs sent you elsewhere or reused the existing world. It wouldn't be such a stretch for a new Zelda game to use those ideas.
Mario Kart needs to disrupt the pattern of console versions being sub-par and portable versions being brilliant. I want to be excited, but I keep being let down by the home versions and either their controls or the distinct blandness of their tracks.
Do the control scheme of MK:Wii and MK:DD's large karts lead to those wide courses I wonder? Here's hoping for a similar feel to Mario Kart 7 in any case, taking some of the lessons from Sonic All Stars Transformed.
All of the retro courses being released as DLC wouldn't go amiss either.
Oh, I suppose you can assume that my excitement has been targeted at Mario Kart. I will almost certainly be getting at least 5 of the games on that list however!
What happens if you do not reach your goal UPDATED?
Our financial goal is a flexible one. All contributions will go directly towards the development of this game and making it a reality. We are committed to making this game, however, if it becomes apparent that we cannot raise enough to develop this project then we will refund all pledges.
I went and bought the full 12 episodes... though the day one momentum hasn't really carried on, I'm staying optimistic that the 1.5m total will get hit before the end of 30 days.
Loved eternal darkness but I really hope this doesn't go awry!
Just read elsewhere about some crazy guy offering his translation of Mother 3 to Nintendo, absolutely free. It probably won't happen unless they get someone to read that entire document and then translate it a few more times for Europe.
Us and our stupid languages... Anyway, I've already played it once before, er somehow, and can't recommend the game enough. I will definitely be getting it the day of release and making my other half play through it while I mess around a Mr Saturn plush.
I don't know about EA really, I'd sooner see them try to capture the games makers who don't churn out sports. EA have some undeniably decent titles but I think of them as being more for the folks who grab an Xbox/PS3 then disregard them when people aren't over playing a shooter/sports game as a group.
I'd sooner see Konami or Squeenix chased, the harder-core titles released on Wii U alongside the Nintendo games creating a console full of traditional gaming titles, with the PS4/720 keeping the 'casual' crowd of sports/shooter gamers happy.
To date, casual to me still reflects the occasional gamer who picks up the heavily advertised sports and shooter titles. I am aware the industry has redefined this since, but I'm already old in my mind and frankly do not respond well to change.
I don't really think of adding an easy as "watering down" really, it's worth bearing in mind that this was a pretty tricky game anyway. Throw in a smaller screen, shorter (typically) play sessions on a handheld and a slightly trickier control pad (sorry 3DS!) and you've got good reasons for making an easier difficulty an option.
I did love this game but I don't think it'll be getting a second purchase from me. It was genuinely brilliant but I do sort of pine for a 'true' Donkey Kong Country 4 with K.Rool as the enemy, Kremlings, etc.
I absolutely hammered this version of the game every time my family went on holiday to France when I was a youngster. I think my mother was whistling the tunes by the end of each fortnight. It turns out that French cathedrals and architecture aren't as appealing to pre-teens as a Game Boy, who knew?
It's very simple, in fact SNES version owners will note that it's the same as its 16 bit cousin with many of the features stripped out, the village being reduced to a menu screen for example. It's even missing the dating element of the Harvest Moon experience.
Probably the better version to have on the move I suppose, but the SNES version, closely followed by Rune Factory Frontier, will always hold higher places in this aspiring farmer's pixelated heart.
Another long term lurker here... Well done on four years! I have only vague memories of earlier Nintendo Life from when I was more regular on a 'rival' site that has long since passed into history.
Keep it up you fine folks.
EDIT: Wait, is this just a really weird April Fools joke that has somehow influenced my memories of this website...?
I do partially agree with the points on third party developers I suppose, though his whining about the content that's already available and coming does undermine his credibility somewhat.
I was a launch customer with more money than sense and had five retail games for the console within a month (Mario, NintendoLand, ZombiU, Sonic All Stars and Tekken) along with some of the eShop content (Trine, Nano Assault and I think Switch Force was from back then) though I have to admit that things are a little slow right now.
I am however, well aware that the big hitters will be with us before Christmas and I imagine the 2013 holiday period will see a reflection of that at retail. It's a tough one to call with regard to the competitors however, as if they have a particularly strong launch it will certainly have an effect on the Wii U's sales. The smart money is on Sony and Microsoft having watched the Wii U with some interest and launching with something stronger than another 2D Mario game.
At present, the Wii U doesn't really seem to have a clear identity in the marketplace; it's a Wii sequel so it's accessible and innovative with the emphasis on new controls and play styles, no wait, it's a hardcore machine that can match the current gen, no wait it's a half-hearted media centre ... But I don't honestly care personally, I wanted a new Smash Bros, Mario Kart and Mario games and I'm getting them. I'd probably have bought the console if it constantly gave off a faint whiff of cabbage.
Still, a lot of the coverage centred on price cuts and a more forceful marketing push are probably correct. It wouldn't make sense to do it now however and should probably be considered for after summer, when the games get here and people who are thinking of getting the console are pushed over the edge by exposure to the console.
