Retailers hiking prices like this is just wrong. I realize this is in the UK, but here in the states the racks are pretty full at most places I see these, including the more desirable ones. They practically were begging me to buy one when I picked up Captain Toad at Gamestop. Well, they practically beg you to buy about a dozen things at the checkout anymore...
The only thing holding me back, besides getting a couple just for the cool fig, is that most of their big titles that would really support these are out as of now. Like SMK8, they may add in limited interaction, but it feels a little like an after thought. The leveling is really a missed opportunity there. I'm guessing they have a plan though, and games like Mario party 10 and more will incorporate them better. Come on Nintendo, a little more nudge and you know you get my cash.
This is not a perfect game, but a 5 is almost criminal. This game was oozing with atmosphere (even the "fog" added to the feel). Guns, check, great explorable levels, check, dinosaurs, CHECK!. One of my favorites on the system.
So excited for this game, even more anticipated for me than smash. I see so much of that Nintendo creativity in it. Kinda feels like when I saw the first pikmin game. I know it's based on the toad levels on 3d world, but it's nice to see something completely new coming after all the sequels.
I'm in the US, but the same problem happened after the launch of the game here. It sold out everywhere. So badly that Gamestop had some excuse as to why my pre-order was not there. No where in my area (Orlando, FL, which is a pretty big area) had a copy for about 4 days, and even those places ended up selling out again. I was able to order a copy online with no problems though.
@Light I completely understand. Babies are a full time job, I pretty much missed the last generation, and felt much as you do now probably. Now they are 5 and 9, and can finally understand what a double jump is. Good times.
@Light "I expect this to be my last generation of both titles, as I have a family now, but I will enjoy this current generation to the fullest"
I agree with the time part, as I also have a family now, but part of enjoying this to the fullest has been sharing these games with my kids. They love playing Mario Kart with me, as well as Super Mario 3D, and Super Bros Wii U. My daughter is playing Wind Waker HD now and has fun if I sit and watch, or give her tips when stuck (I keep them as spoiler free as possible). They love animal crossing on the 3DS, as well as Luigi's Mansion 3DS. They love when we all sit down every other Friday and play Mario Party, or Wii U party. All because I bought these for my self.
I don't think games are going anywhere for me, or my new little gamers.
I think that Nintendo should stick with it's current price, it's already lower. With Wii U, people either will buy it for the Nintendo IP games, or not, really.
Xbox One is lowing their price to compete with PS4, as that's the competition for them. Most gamers I know own a Wii U, and a PS4 OR Xbox One (or a PS3 or 360, waiting for what ever drives them to pick with of the new consoles is must have to them).
What's funny to me is that the Wii U is currently the only MUST HAVE console out of the new three.
Love the new characters, and the Cia Story in Legend Mode. Haven't really tried the new Adventure Mode map.
The free DLC characters updated the first time I loaded the game after it's release, but then I had to close the game, and wait a couple minutes for the paid DLC to decide to update. It must be automated, but it appears the DLC pack updates after of the update for the 3 boss character update. I had preordered the DLC pack.
I'm really glad to see this is getting good scores. I haven't played the original, but it's obvious the developer took great care in making this game. I'm buying it and look forward to experiencing it, if for no other reason than supporting a developer that obviously cares about what he's doing. And.. it looks pretty fantastic.
The Warriors series has always been a niche part of the market. I personally love them, even though I would agree with most of the scores they receive. I agree with this review, but it doesn't stop me from the enjoyment I'm having with it. This is a sure bet for warriors fans, especially if you love the Zelda games. It may not work the other way around though, a Zelda fan that doesn't like the Warriors series may not enjoy it as much.
After extended play update:
Being a long time fan of the warriors series, I have to say this is their best effort yet. I would even go as far as to say those who aren't into the warriors series would find a lot to like in this game. The pacing is better, the missions fun, and the battles are a blast. I love how many events they have put into the battles, and the big bosses are a great addition.
I wonder what Hunter Rank you have to be to hunt these. Maybe you can craft furniture from their parts.
Nintendo's strength is in their franchises, arguably it's what makes their consoles matter. It makes sense that they would want content exclusive to their console in as many games as possible. Kinda like what happened with Soulcalibur and it's guest characters that were platform dependent licenses.
@jasonbra "Oh well, met Bruce Campbell...thats all that matters."
I used to live in Ashland, OR, just a few miles from Jacksonville, OR. We used to go to a bar there and he was there pretty often just hanging out. Being a big fan of him from Xena, Evil Dead, etc, it was hard not to go all fan boy on the guy so I just left him alone. One time while ordering a round I ended up standing and talking to him next to the bar. I ended up sitting and talking to him quite a while. He's a really great guy, very down to earth and actually pretty funny. I was actually pretty surprised how few people actually come up to him or recognize him, to me he's a legend.
The Mercedes cars aren't as obtrusive as I feared, even though I'm still pretty conflicted about advertising in the game, even if it's free. I know it's by choice, but you still have to look at it in online matches.
The DLC looks great. Great price considering it's 4 new cups!
I'm always on the fence about Metal Slug 4. There is nothing really wrong with it, but it's a very obvious cut and paste job by Mega (which Playmore had make this one after buying the right from SNK). There is very little in this game that you literally have not seen before if you have played 1-3 and X. Its a fun game though, it's more Metal Slug and that's always good. I would recommend playing all of the previous installments first though, as this feels like a step sideways for the series, and compared to the brilliant Metal Slug X, maybe a bit lacking.
This is sad news to me. In the 16 bit days I loved all the systems, but my TG-16 was my favorite, being a fan of scrolling shooters. Hudson's games had a special something to them, and were a great alternative to the more mainstream games.
I loved how challenging Beat was, in fact I'm still trying to finish the 3rd level. Core's first level takes Beat's 3rd level and laughs at it for being so girly. Core is seriously hard so far, and I'm not sure if it feels as flowing as Beat did. Even fans of Beat should seriously consider if they really want this kind of "challenge" in their life.
If you enjoy sitting in a corner weeping and feeling unworthy, then by all means download this right away, this will be the best 600 points you ever spent.
@AlphaNerd01: You hit it on the head for me. Looks funny and very clever, but I hope it's really cheap, or has deeper gameplay than it appears.... which I doubt. Anyways, will be fun for a laugh. The WoW parody called "Lot's-o-Levelling" sounds the funniest to me so far.
One of the definitions for squib is: A squib is a brief satirical or witty piece of writing or speech, like a lampoon, or a short, sometimes humorous piece in a newspaper or magazine, used as a filler. It can be intended to ignite thinking and discourse by others on topics of theoretical importance.
Maybe by narrowing down the game play to it's simplest form he's poking fun at how boring some of these games actually are under their shiny gloss of paint.
This is a pretty fun game, but I would say it's an RPG kinda like Harvest Moon. It's mainly a simulator, and you start with a ship, and a couple crew members. You level up certain attributes and get better ships, and build a little fleet. Depending on what character you pick the game changes a bit. One character starts as a trader basically, with no cannons on your ship etc. Another character starts as a pirate and you can pillage merchant fleets right away.
It's pretty fun if you like Harvest Moon type games that are more about management than action. It's pretty flexible too as far as how you play it, you can make your way as an explorer, trader, pirate, or lead your fleet to defeat another country's fleet, or mix and match how you'll get your riches. Fun stuff, but not for everyone maybe.
Mappy is the best of the four released. It's as fun as Pac-Man, but this gives me hope for Donkey Kong arcade, and many later ones like Raiden... and, yea Tron.
I'm looking forward to getting to play this one, I was an early adopter back in the day, and had moved on to another console when this was released. Here's hoping this comes stateside soon.
Wow, this is the best "chance" I've taken on a game like this since the first Katamari game. It's so simple, yet so fun. I could not stop playing it after I downloaded it. After the first try I was thinking "hmm, that was interesting.. maybe I'll give it another go". That went on for four more hours....
Military Madness is one of my all time favorites, and I will be happy with this even if it's just a 3d-remake. Hopefully it has new maps though, which would make me happy, quite happy indeed.
Back in the day, for a long time I only had R-Type, Punch-Out, Super Mario World, and this game for the NES. I actually liked this game when it came out, and played it quite a bit. Playing it now I realize how buggy it was, and poorly done. If I had played Ninja Gaiden at the time, I probably wouldn't have bothered even then.
DK Jr. as well as DK (even with a level missing) are good games for old school arcade fun. Sort of like every other game at the time (pacman, frogger, etc.) these games are about high scores. I would rate them a 5 if the VC actually had a leader board system, but it's hard to fault that limitation on these games since that was a problem with these as a home release in general. Still fun as nostalgia though.
1000 Wii points and the 300 some blocks is a bargain for this game. It's highly polished, has a great learning curve that never leaves you bored or wondering WTH is going on, and has more hours of gameplay than many $50 games. The music and graphics are pretty good too. It actually kinda reminds me of Zack and Wiki, with a dash of Lemmings or Lost Vikings.
I'm actually having quite a bit of fun with this title, even though it's not perfect. The fact that it plays so different than all the other shooters on the VC is actually it's best strength, as well as being a pretty fun shooter in it's own right. It gets better in the later levels for sure, and becomes quite challenging. The graphics look better in the thumbnails than the actual game, but they still look pretty good, and many of the levels so far have a lot of nice touches from various sci-fi influences. If you like shooters and think this looks interesting, then I would say go for it.
I can appreciate a "B" game, and there's plenty of 2 star games that I've enjoyed way past their rating, BUT... 2 stars is generous to this poor excuse for a game. I just beat this game, and I would have to say that it lacks so many things that not only make a game fun, but at the very least a game. Many people have said this is a Final Fight clone, but it actually feels more like Golden Axe to me. The gameplay is repetitive to say the least with the limited move set you have (3-4 moves, and only two are useful...), and the unlimited continues combined with the fact that it doesn't reset your score when you continue, means that you really don't need more than 1 more to slog through this game. Completely no sense of accomplishment. I won't bash the graphics since it's a first gen NG game, but the art direction is questionable, kinda like World Heroes actually, but they get the job done, The end boss is cool, but thats about it. This game also throws so many cheap shots at you, that it's obviously designed to suck quarters from any poor saps pockets who is unfortunate enough to be playing this game and ACTUALLY feels the need to progress farther. Trust me, save your quarters for something better, like Pac-man.
I love this game, but that's 90 percent nostalgia. It's technically proficient, but it is kinda clunky at the same time. It is fun though, and some of the bosses are pretty creative. I mean, how many game do you fight a room full of possessed items. I would only recommend this if you have fond memories of it, otherwise, there are better games really to spend your points on.
This is a true classic of the side scrolling shooter. The art direction is amazing, and the gameplay is challenging but fair. If you've never played Metal Slug, then you really need to download this. The classic controller allows you to play this game in a much better fashion than the Anthology controls. This is one of my personal favorites in the run and gun style shooter, and the 2D graphics are some of the best ever.
Don't let the short playtime and simplicity of this game deter you. At 1000 points this game has more polish, style, and gameplay than most of the full price Wii games. WiiWare was made for this kind of game, and it's great to have an outlet for the independent game developers to not only get exposure, but to make some money so we see more from them in the future.
A surprisingly fun game thats deeper than it may initially appear. It's a bit long winded for what it is (an average play will take around 30-60 minutes) but it has a trance quality to it that is slightly meditative, in an ADHD kinda way.
For 5 bucks this game is hard to not recommend. It starts a bit slow (like the first 30 levels) but it has an addictive pick up and play quality. The creativity in the graphics is superb. it's just a flash game at heart, like the countless others you can play online for free, but you can play it on your couch, and it's obvious that they put the effort into upping the quality enough to justify the 500 points.
This really brings the arcade into the living room for me. This is what I had dreamed the VC would do (online high scores) and I'm having a blast with this, so far my best rank is 11th in SW US in 5 min mode. The controls and FPS are silky smooth, and if you like score attack games then this is nirvana. Excellent review too!
I'll start by stating that I usually download NES games on a whim and a pint, I've found that very few have aged well enough to download, Punch Out and the Mario series being definite standouts as timeless classics. This game has aged well, and is still highly playable and fun. If you are a fan of the arcade game, then this might not do it for you, but it's still a great version of this classic game. I would recommend RCR over this, but DD is 500 points well spent. The SoR series is much better if you lack the nostalgia for this game and just want a great beat 'em up.

The classic controller allows you to play this game in a much better fashion than the Anthology controls. This is one of my personal favorites in the run and gun style shooter, and the 2D graphics are some of the best ever.
Re: Review: LostWinds
Don't let the short playtime and simplicity of this game deter you. At 1000 points this game has more polish, style, and gameplay than most of the full price Wii games. WiiWare was made for this kind of game, and it's great to have an outlet for the independent game developers to not only get exposure, but to make some money so we see more from them in the future.
Re: Review: Pop
A surprisingly fun game thats deeper than it may initially appear. It's a bit long winded for what it is (an average play will take around 30-60 minutes) but it has a trance quality to it that is slightly meditative, in an ADHD kinda way.
Re: Review: Defend Your Castle
For 5 bucks this game is hard to not recommend. It starts a bit slow (like the first 30 levels) but it has an addictive pick up and play quality. The creativity in the graphics is superb. it's just a flash game at heart, like the countless others you can play online for free, but you can play it on your couch, and it's obvious that they put the effort into upping the quality enough to justify the 500 points.
Re: Review: Star Soldier R
This really brings the arcade into the living room for me. This is what I had dreamed the VC would do (online high scores) and I'm having a blast with this, so far my best rank is 11th in SW US in 5 min mode. The controls and FPS are silky smooth, and if you like score attack games then this is nirvana.
Excellent review too!
Re: Pirates: The Key of Dreams - First In-Game Video
Looks a lot like Shipwreckers (NA PS1 game, aka Overboard!) to me. I hope it plays like it, I remember it being a fun game.
Re: Double Dragon
I'll start by stating that I usually download NES games on a whim and a pint, I've found that very few have aged well enough to download, Punch Out and the Mario series being definite standouts as timeless classics. This game has aged well, and is still highly playable and fun. If you are a fan of the arcade game, then this might not do it for you, but it's still a great version of this classic game. I would recommend RCR over this, but DD is 500 points well spent. The SoR series is much better if you lack the nostalgia for this game and just want a great beat 'em up.
