It seems you can't swing a Joy-Con around (with the wrist-strap carefully applied, of course) today without hitting upon a celeb promo for the Switch. The latest to appear is from Nintendo of America, recruiting performer Christina Aguilera and her family for another 'My Way' commercial promoting the system.
It sensibly doesn't pretend that the singer communicates with her family through the Switch Online App voice chat, instead showing video and voice calls on her phone. There's a bit of online co-op, single player and local multiplayer all thrown in, along with an OLED model - consider all the marketing boxes ticked!
It seems like a perfectly ok commercial to us, and helps show a variety of family-friendly games on the system.
Let us know what you think - as always - in the comments below.

"How do you do, fellow kids?"
It’s always weird seeing people that were trendy when I was younger, trendy now. I don’t remember liking my older brother’s celebrities so it seems like either people stay relevant longer or the younger celebs can’t get a foothold.
How does she game with those nails though?
She got a free Oled. and some bucks, i guess...
I forgot she existed and a lot of the younger audience here probably going "who??" 🤣
Its a harmless commercial, but I miss the comedy a lot of 3DS commercials had.
Long time no see her after 20 years.
Mmmmmhmmmmm!!
I just check her Spotify and it has 19.5 million monthly listeners. She seems to have kept her relevance more than I expected she would.
I love how everyone in the comments is pointing out they're using Face time to talk and not the NSO app.
@reporterdavid she's a genie in a bottle, she does what she wants.
not into celeb culture, but it kinda looks like they actually play Switch as a family. unless they did a lot of research for the commercial lol
I really wish Nintendo would put the money these "totally genuine" ads cost into improving their actual services...
Nothing against a proper PR campaign, but i fail to see who the target audience for these things is...
Pump that money into your server infrastructure and run an add how well your online service now works!
Man that’s a time warp. I was pretty young when she was around the first time!
Wake me up when Sean Evans gums his Switch up with hot sauce and asks it even hotter questions, featuring gameplay from Zelda’s lava-filled Death Mountain.
EDIT: For the voice chat haters… I seriously don’t understand what the big deal is with the whole thing. Why should Nintendo have to pump money into creating yet another “chat” app when there are already 93 other options. Competition is good but there are soooooo many already. Just use FaceTime or literally any other app you want and play your Switch. Done.
I wanna see a collab between Tom Waits and Nintendo, not this Christina Aguilera hack.
I mean Brie Larson and Awkwafina are at least in Marvel films.. Xtina hasn’t had a hit album in a decade……
@Einherjar The trailer shows a working mum maintaining a connection with her kids via Switch, and you don't see who the target audience is?
Cute ad! It's not targeting me, and while I have nothing against Christina Aguilera, I didn't jam to her much as a youth. I can see they're trying to target my generation though, which is fine. Perhaps the friends I have that don't game may be joining soon? Maybe I'm putting too much faith into marketing..!
This would had been an Amico ad if it didn't get delay.
Those nails don't look joy con friendly...
@gcunit Which would be?
Working moms? Kids?
I'm pretty sure kids love 00's forgotten starlets way more than a trailer with just colorful Pokemon.
That’s actually quite wholesome and quite realistic to my own family bonding over gaming.
Well done Nintendo.
Oh man... I had a crush on Christina Aguilera back in '99. And maybe I still do.
With the money she gets from this she can finally buy herself some nail clippers. You go girl!
@Einherjar ah the myth that Nintendo spending money on ads and PR is taking away money towards infrastructure and services.
Can't believe people still come out with this rubbish. It's pretty clear to see who the target range is for this marketing campaign. Mothers who have disposable income and who want to have fun with there children!
As for Christine Aguilera. She doesn't need the money and that girl has one.of the best voices you will ever hear. Her vocal skills are super dope. Her vocal range is simply incredible!
@Varkster My thoughts exactly. I was already around when X-TINA was Dirrrrty!
@SwitchVogel
Speaking of which: I would very much like a Nintendo ad featuring Steve Buscemi.
Ya'll so out of touch thinking Christina Aguillera disappeared in the 2000s and just now reemerged to do a Nintendo ad.
@BloodNinja But what would Tom Waits play?
More importantly, what's the framerate and pixel count on that game?
She was like 6 when NES came out, so she may have been with Nintendo consoles from the start. If her parents let her play any games between dance lessons.
Eww...no, thanks.
@kobashi100 Would you do me a favor and point to where i said that "PR is taking away money from somewhere else"?
"Take what you put into X and put it into Y instead" does not imply that it was meant for Y from the get go.
Who’s next? Bette Midler?
As a member of a younger generation, I swear I only know her name because of these Nintendo advertisements (dating back to around Tomodachi Life if I remember correctly)!
@faint Well, she's good.
I admire the gumption of the editor that managed to sneak the Metal Gear Solid codec sound effect into a Nintendo advert!
Also, if I remember correctly, Christina previously did a song for one of the Pokemon movies years ago? Maybe someone at Ninetndo found her phone number going through one of their old rolodexes...
Wonder If she can rub her switch the right way
Much better than that Twitter ad.
@PtM Didn’t say she wasn’t. I just haven’t heard anything about her in a decade.
Really cool ad, liked it alot.
watching this makes me miss the Robin and Zelda Williams ads... they were great!
@Purgatorium Tom Waits would play misery.
Just to put things into proportion, she's sold 75 million records, won 5 Grammy Awards and 1 Latin Grammy, has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, has been recognized countless times as one of the greatest female performers and one of the top Latina artists of all time, is recognized as an iconic LGBT ally by GLAAD and other groups, "Moves Like Jagger" is still in heavy rotation on pop radio, and her 2018 album charted in the top ten in like a dozen countries. And as recently as July of this year she was selling out shows at the Hollywood Bowl. But apparently none of this registers with Nintendo gamers.
I'll be totally honest, I'm not that into her. But I'm not gonna pretend she's nobody because of that.
@JasmineDragon dunno how anyone could call her a nobody or has been etc etc. She is one of the best female singers of all time. Great to see she made her money and now doesn't need to put out wack pop records to desperately try stay relevant. She can put out the music she wants and when she wants and not worry how the label will react. Making paper as she still sells out live shows because the voice is amazing.
I don't know who that is but I'm guessing she's an American celebrity which is all I need to know to not care.
@JasmineDragon dont forget the Q+ (quick do an edit before the masters find out)
....I still think of her as "those new celebs for the kids...."
Nintendo does not need to do that
@Astral-Grain
I think "Genie in a Bottle" is still Christina Aguilera's best song.
Christina was one of the judges on The Voice, loads of kids know who she is. Plus she has one of the most amazing voices whether you like her songs or not. I would say only Ariana Grande can compete in vocal ranges. They are in the league of Mariah Carey.
The people who liked Christina back in the day are likely parents now like her or soon to be. She is exactly what Nintendo needs to target the over 30+ audience….which consists of more than double the demographic of children and teenage Switch players. Switch players are mostly over 20.
Just checked YouTube, she has a new Spanish song out 2 weeks ago and has over 13 million views already.
@Wilforce Most likely Celine Dion if we are going up age groups. Bette Midler is more of your grandparents age group.
@JasmineDragon Personally, I am just not that into worshipping celebrities of ANY calibre. I can like celebrities just fine, but in no way am I putting them on a pedestal higher than those of "regular" people I meet.
My guess is this is simply true for many people here, they just voice that opinion a little strongly.
Short and to the point.
Christina Aguilera > Brie Larson
@Fudge_Fujiyama why would you have a teen actress for a marketing campaign aimed 30yo+ mother's with children?
This isn't some generic switch ad. It's clearly targeted at a certain demographic.
@Daniel36 I totally understand that and feel the same, believe it or not. But it's one thing to say "I don't participate in celebrity worship", and a totally different thing to say "bah, this nobody hasn't had a hit in years, shoulda gone with (insert other current celebrity) instead" or "she's a hack, let me nominate ('serious' famous musician from my long-past youth)".
@faint I think that's the new normal, now that we don't listen to music over shared channels anymore.
It does feel wholesome seeing her playing switch with her kids. Heck if she is a big nintendo fan good for her. I'm normally apathetic about Celebs staring in Nintendo ads unless they're doing what non celebrities do in these ads like playing with friends and family. Or if it ties in to their career like Serena Williams playing Mario Tennis Aces.
Where is the NPH one? I loved that one.
Christina Aguilera is actually a person with talent and seems to be right on track. There are imo only a few pop celebs with real talent. Beyonce, Christina and Gaga.
I remember the Dirty comeback after Genie in the Bottle, kinda intense and different lol.
