Re: Soapbox: Nintendo Switch Online's Library Is A Snapshot Of '90s Gaming Shelves

This is a great and extremely necessary piece, Kerry. I feel like Youtube channels/Twitter have created a groupthink for an era of gaming where, when it was actually happening, such a thing was nearly impossible. Part of the fun of visiting a friend's house back then was seeing what games they had you'd never heard of, and finding out first hand if they were any good. I would much prefer this service be a more realistic collection of games of varying quality than just yet another "these are the CHOSEN games" curation.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl #34 - Perfect Dark

"Yeah, we know it's Japan" Hahahahaha! Way to guarantee all the contrarians show up to dissent!
Not me, though. The Japanese Perfect Dark box art might be my favorite for any game ever. It's got this awesome, dark, Fin de Siecle energy that's spellbinding and hypnotic. It's a work of art. The other two are fine, but they're just box covers.

Re: New ESRB Rating Suggests The Wii U Isn't Done With New Games Just Yet

StephenWolf

Happy with my Switch, but I love the Wii U. Made a promise that starting in Christmas of 2018 I'd play through and review a game in my Wii U backlog every holiday break indefinitely. Finished Xenoblade Chronicles X in 2018 and Child of Light in 2019. Thinking I'm gonna take down Paper Mario Color Splash this year. Long live the Wii U.

Yes, another chance to spam Nintendolife with a link to another one of my old N64 reviews!

Seriously, though, the lead up to this game in 1998 was huge! Acclaim's marketing team and the developer interviews had this game pumped up as the biggest ever, with huge levels like no one had ever seen, and the goriest weapons in gaming history. Unfortunately, upon its release, with all the slowdown, and massive levels with only a few save points, it was received as only pretty great, and not "INCREDIBLE!" I've always been a little scared the game would be lost to history.
Glad that's not happening, though a part of me is afraid the improvements, which will surely make Turok 2 a better overall game, might take away some of that Nintendo 64 charm.

Re: EVO 2019 Drops Super Smash Bros. Melee

StephenWolf

@Anti-Guy I love Melee, but I agree with this 100%. If a newcomer wants to come into competitive Melee at this point, they can look forward to putting thousands of hours into becoming frame perfect with one of three Melee characters (Fox, Falco, Marth), and having to pretend the other 20 don’t exist. It’s really de-evolved in recent years to just Fox vs Fox. That’s not exactly fun. The blessing of our times is that Nintendo can hopefully keep tweaking Ultimate until many, many characters are viable. Unfortunately, Melee is now stuck in a three-character historical mire.

Re: Japanese Poll Discovers That Vast Majority Of Viewers Were Pleased With The Nintendo Direct

StephenWolf

I will say good. Nearly very good. Really excited about Senua (never thought I'd get to play that one!), Bloodstained, and the Link's Awakening remake (if anything, just to hear some cool modern renditions on the music). Seriously hoping they are releasing something about Animal Crossing soon, though, as I'm starting to worry that's further off then they've implied. I still play the Metroid Primes on their original systems, so I wasn't ticked about that, though, I really want to know what's up with this rumored Star Fox racer. I mean, Retro had to have been working on SOMETHING for the last five years, right?

Re: Game-Breaking Bug Found In Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story On 3DS

@Frontiersmann
To be fair to current Nintendo, from what they told me then, I was not the first to have the issue. It was the "Echo Visor" glitch, so they were aware of it. This was also a time when one could buy replacement manuals from Nintendo's website for most of their fairly recent games for a reasonably small fee. I remember in particular buying one for Golden Sun II after picking up a used copy of the cart only at my local video game store. It was admittedly a different time.

Back in late 2004, I was about halfway through Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, when I somehow jumped over something I wasn't supposed to. I found a save area and saved, but then found I didn't have the item necessary to get in or out of that particular region of the game. I e-mailed Nintendo support, told them what happened in detail, and they air-mailed me a memory card with a save file just past where I was stuck in the game. Like someone above said, customer service ain't what it used to be.

Re: Video: This Personal Video Game Collection Is The Greatest Of All-Time

StephenWolf

@Don I've very slowly introduced my kid to mine. Never let him go through it on his own, or handle them roughly. For some reason, he really latched onto the Dreamcast (his first real gaming obsession was an old copy of Sega Marine Fishing...I ended up letting him keep the manual in his room because he loved going through it, and it's shredded with use now, but considering that's still an easy to get game, and he loved it so much, I actually enjoyed watching him wear it out). He's eight now, and we've played through plenty of old games together. He has his own Wii U (he's still more enamored with that than our Switch) and a 3DS. Over time, I've taught him that my old games, especially the ones in the box, are rare and valuable, and have to be respected in how we handle them, but he also knows and appreciates that one day they will all be his.
