Sega's upcoming release Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania looks incredibly promising but how will it run on the Switch?
In a post over on social media, the company has confirmed the latest entry in the series will run at a silky-smooth 60FPS, alongside another look at the gyroscopic controls:
It follows on from the news earlier this month seemingly revealing Sonic Colors: Ultimate on Switch will not include 60FPS gameplay after Sega removed a reference to it in a Nintendo Switch trailer. The same game - featuring improved graphics and revamped lighting - will apparently run at 4K, 60FPS on certain other systems.
Will you be picking up the new entry in the Super Monkey Ball series when it arrives on 5th October? Leave a comment below.

Why did it have to be the developers behind this actually knowing how to properly develop games for the Switch? Why couldn't the Sonic devs do the same?
Well I can't defend Sonic colors at this point LMAO.
Nice confirmation! Definitely seems like a game to pick up...
But then again I'm already stacked for the holidays from Jackbox, Mario Party, Pokemon, and the Switch OLED! This might have to be a 2022 pickup for me unfortunately due to the sheer timing at the moment. I do think it'll be fun, but my backlog is already overflowing.
Super Monkey Ball does what Sonican't.
Joking aside, i'm looking forward to trying Super Monkey Ball. never tried it when it was on the Gamecube and such, recently got Super Monkey Ball Jr on GBA. hopefully that game will convince me to pick this one up. these features are nice though.
60 fps...I don't believe it.
Thrilled. THRILLED I tell you!
4K, 60fps for Sonic Colors Ultimate
If I recall correctly, the base PS4 and Xbox One S do not support 4K, I think.
It’s probably just for either the pro and x versions of the respective consoles or it’s only for ps5 and Xbox series X/S
@Snatcher unfortunately Monkey Ball doesn’t seem to interest me while Sonic colors does.
I believe SC Ultimate is more a full on remaster similar to like Mass Effect Legendary Edition. So I could sort of understand why it would be 30 FPS on switch but I wish they could just give us a 60 FPS option.
Like this. 1080p, 30 FPS or 720p, 60 FPS
You’d have to have system update level stable hands to play most of the levels in Monkey Ball.
@RandomGamesAndStuff I am stacked for Metroid, Danganronpa, Fatal Frame, and many more games to come
I’m on board. 1 and 2 are stone cold classics.
I'm sure this will make 60fps folks happy
I'm not especially anything that Sonic Colors: Ultimate is 30 FPS on Switch one way or the other, but its obviously good to see Super Monkey Ball pull this off.
But being fair, Super Monkey Ball has much smaller levels without a ton of things to load in, so this is pretty unsurprising. But it is a nice cherry on top of what seems like a brilliant deal of a remake. It's not even like a full priced game from what I've heard, so even better!
So this is 60fps but Sonic Colors isn't?
That's really weird
Was already gonna buy it on Switch. I can't wait to jump back into this series.
So Skyward Sword, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Super Monkey Ball could all run 60fps on Switch just fine but not Sonic Colors? The so call fastest hedgehog that defined blast processing couldn't even go 60fps? More reason why Sonic Team is lazy. If a port of Sonic Colors Ultimate couldn't run 60fps for Switch, I don't think his upcoming Breath of the Wild ripoff would either. Sonic Forces at least had an excuse.
Monkey Target!!!
Come for the main game. Stay for the party games.
@Kevember The classic soundtrack is DLC.
Well sonic devs... What's your excuse now?
@Aozz101x You’re in for a treat (unless they somehow mess things up, but I don’t see how they can).
@Aozz101x In fairness to Sonic, without his blast processing chip he can barely keep up with Mario in the Olympics!
@anoyonmus Re: 4K 60fps
Yeah PS4 and Xb1/1s will be 1080p. Though who are we kidding, for a game with 'Colours' in the title and doesn't have integrated HDR, we are all losers here.
60 fps i basically required in a game requiring precision.
Movies run at 24 fps, so I am not sure why some on here hate 30 fps so much, would much rather a stable 30 fps, than 60 fps with massive dips, far more jarring imho, and surely the frame rate obsessives will have a PS5 or a Series X by now.
Love these positive/negative articles from Nintendo life, great positive story about super monkey ball running at 60 fps, which in itself is great news, and should lead to comments discussing this news, but if course the article has to mention the fact another game does not run at the same frame rate, this illiciting more comments about that, rather than the good news of the article.
But if course Nintendo life knows it's comments section audience, and realize positive articles do not get as many comments, so therefore clicks as a negative one, now just waiting for Damo to jump to the articles defence, stating Liam is only reporting facts.
Well, I'm not too sure who I need to write to to change the roling sfx, but aside from that, this really is starting to sound like game of the year for me.
The mechanics in this version are slighty faster than the originals. I read someone mention it's going to wreck the gameplay (some place else). Which I find nonsense. It will only wreck their muscle memory, which is a great way of making the game feel new. I mean, the actual gameplay is the same lol.
Provided the Gyros work better than Skyward Sword.
Anyone know where to pre-order the physical in the UK?
Never played the originals so I'm kinda tempted with this.
Why are people bringing up Sonic Colours? The two games are entirely different. One of them is a Gamecube game with relatively simple geometry and tiny areas, and one isn't.
Personally, I'm glad I've got the 8bitdo adaptor, there's absolutely no way I can play Monkey Ball without the octagonal notches around the GC's analogue stick.
Looking forward to this more and more! Might agree with @JonComms that this very well can be the best game of 2021.*
*No, it will of course be SMTV, but regardless, this looks hella fun!
Never played these games before but I can't wait to try this one! It looks so much fun, I'm excited!
I never really played the Monkey Ball games much, so this looks to be a great way to dip my toe into the water.
@Onion,
Same here, always thought the series looked interesting, and quite enjoyed the Mario Galaxy level, where Mario was on top of that glass ball rolling around that made type level, so may get this.
"But Sonic Colors isn't?" argument is .. beyond insane!
You're comparing a relatively stationary and simplistic surface, with basic lighting and a skybox around it, with a single ball on it, and some replicated (easy to handle duplicated models) spinning bananas.. and comparing it to a fairly large detailed landscape with incredibly complex lighting, tons of moving enemy, all moving at a hefty sonic'y speed.
They're not the same.
They're nowhere near the same.
And given that one can easily handle 60fps and the other can't, that should say to you "they are not the same thing.."
Good grief..
@SpringDivorce I'll be using a Gamecube controller with the adaptor
Anyone checked out the 'cooking with Aiai' video? It's obligatory viewing and I want one of those puppets soooo much xx
@Tandy255
Oh god yes. Monkey Target with my kiddies is going to be immense!
@GrailUK
No other way. I picked up SMB Deluxe on Xbox, and despite being a decent port, it was an utter nightmare on that controller.
@TheFrenchiestFry Well Super Monkey Ball is more intensse, technical and needs the high frame rate. Sonic is a more casual game.
Well yeah, its the absolute lowest framerate acceptable for a game.
@johnvboy We're not watching a movie though, we're playing games and how precise and accurate control are in games depends on how good the framerates are. 24fps will had stupidly awkward delay input lags which could make some games awfully unplayable. 30fps will only work if you're playing games that doesn't required precise movements or controls like strategy, turn based RPGs (like Final Fantasy VII), puzzle games, and slow pace action adventure but on games that required precision controls like racing games, fighting games, real time action RPGs (like the Final Fantasy VII remake), fast pace action adventures, and platformers then you'll need that native silky smooth 60fps so to not hinder the accuracy of control cause one simple delay could be the difference between winning and losing.
Final Fantasy VII is a good example, when it was still a turn based RPG getting the game running at 30fps is acceptable cause the framerate doesn't hinder the enjoyment of the game since you're basically relying on menu and turn base action but when it got remake for the modern era it got turn into a real time action RPG and use precise control movements, with this decision the dev had to be sure to keep the framerates smooth at 60fps for the control to be able to keep up with the action. If the framerates struggle then the control falls behind resulting in input lags so in this instance you could try to perform an attack which the control will register but the action on screen wouldn't start until the framerate from the previous action ended. By locking the framerates at 60fps, it guaranteed the control won't be hinder.
@Specter_of-the_OLED,
Strange then that a lot of PS4 and Xbox games seemed to target around a stable 30 fps, of course the pro versions would be higher, but not many people own those in relation to the standard consoles, also funny they seem to be pushing resolution more than anything else.
I think your comments apply to the more serious competitive players.
@johnvboy A bad workman blames his tools O.<
@GrailUK,
Yes far too much emphasis on the benefits of 60 fps, hardly notice it myself.
