Looking forward to its release. Downloaded the demo and was blown away by the fairly addictie gameplay. Won like 95% of the races and played the demo serveal times over because it was just that much fun. But when it's a Game Freak game, I'm not surprised Wish we'd get a confirmed date for the US so I can have my credit card ready
I don't understand why many people are complaining of the decision to port the game to the 3DS. As @JaxonH said, portable version of a home console game gives ability to play outside the home. If the game were truly terrible, then I think criticisms would be valid, but as it stands, many reviewers haven't had a problem and the game works, even if it's not on the same scale or as crisp in graphics
Until the internet age is further along, what with bandwidth limits and Nintendo's poor decision to include modest storage space on their consoles, I don't really see a digital only future any time soon. Games are growing larger and larger in size, especially those on home consoles and the increase in size doesn't always bode well for an individual's bandwidth, especially in a large household where there are more than one or two people utilizing the internet. And of course there is the issue of the current state of affairs regarding the lack of unified account system on Nintendo's systems. With that in mind, I'm personally most comfortable in purchasing physical gaming media until I can be assured that my digital purchases are safeguarded against damage or loss of a system.
@Nomad Believe it or not, Game Informer gave this 8.5 and a fewother places have given it higher scores than Nintendo Life. I believe it really depnds on the reviewer. Been playing over 40 hours and still only on chapter 3 because I'm so busy hunting for the yo-kai and fulfilling the side quests
@Trinexx Demo is very poorly made tbh.... You'd be better off watching footage from a "Let's Play" video than bothering with thedmo as the dmo is very very limited
@Minotaurgamer
Why, because you say so? The Nintendo World store was filled during its launch party last weekend, a lot of those being people that saw the line and stopped in out of curiosity. And those same people ended up buying the game after being able to play it at the tables
@BakaKnight I get the feeling the reviewer did not test out the different kinds of foods. Each tribe has a specific preference and there are different levels of food which determine how much a wild yo-kai is likely to befriend you. It's work for sure but you still need to experiment. For example, one tribe has a particular affinity for meat-based foods. So I go to the butcher shop and buy the highest quality foods that helps yo-kai of this tribe "like me a ton". It may take several battles, but the affinity builds up regadless as you keep giving this food to the yokai. Say I want to befrind Blazion. I may encounter this yokai in several battles but as long as I keep feeding him meat, I will get him and higher quality meat will make it that much faster to gain his friendship.
Getting our 6 copies after work (4 for the kids and one each for myself and my husband) then we'll be heading up to NY for the launch event! Really hoping more people will give it an honest chance and not take their full impressions from the lacluster demo. The franchise will need as much support as possible if there is any hope if getting the sequels which are drastic improvements over the first game (and add substantial content to an already subtantial game)
The kids and I will be getting one each. I imported the watches and a boat-load of medals for cosplay but they will be incompatible with the American watch, so... Time to blow money again
@RoomB31 While Nate and Jibanyan could've sounded better, I think Whisper is spot on! He has the right amount of pretentiousness in his voice for someone that knows absolutely nothing
Can't wait! Getting my copy (along with the additional 5 for the kids and hubby) immediately after work on Friday then heading up to Nintendo World for the launch event
@Faruko No, quite the opposite. You could be thinking of the spinoff game, Youkai Watch Busters. The first one sold over a million or so and the sequel (all three versions) far outsold the first game. We'll have to wait and see if the third game does better or not next summer
@Angelic_Lapras_King It's dying diwn some because Level 5 thought it a good idea to delay the third game til next year which puzzles me as the second anime season and the movie will only tide over the audience so long
@Tops As long as it's popular enough to bring the sequels to the west that's all I care about. I've enjoyed what I played in the demo. *I'm also one who wishes we got more Digimon games localized.
@crimsontadpoles Pokemon fan here since Gen 1 and I can say I have found Yokai Watch more entertaining. The kids and I can't wait. Taking the day off work next week so we can take a trip to Nintendo World Store for the launch event
Another note about the battle system that I forgot to mention earlier: While it seems simplistic by allowing the yo-kai team to attack automatically, remember this was primarily aimed at children. Given how much one has to do in the midst of a battle, trying to maintain attacks as well would only further complicate the formula.
I also believe it was Level-5's intent that as the main character, you're meeting these entitites that technically already have some degree of an established background unlike Pokemon whom are generally blank slates that have to be nurtured to reach their full potential.
@DekuOnion Yeah, it made me think of the Bravely Default demo that was filled with content but dis little to nothing to explain any of the game mechanics to the player. So even though people are trying the demo to get an idea, it isn't the best demo Level-5 could've made (this same demo was released in Japan) and I fear it could disappoint and turn away those still on the fence
@Frank90 No problem! I've been playing since it came out in Japan in 2013 and it did take me a little time to get used to it but now it is almost second nature. This is why I hope the game at least succeeds and many people give it a true honest to goodness try as it is fun and charming and definitely not trying to be a "Pokemon Killer" as so many gaming sites have been bold enough to claim. And while the first game is totally loaded with stuff to keep a player entertained, the sequels are leaps and bounds better and far more jam-packed with content, including a great multiplayer mode. But of course, the potential to see the sequels hinges heavily on us supporting the franchise (I believe Level 5 recently said they definitely want to localize the sequels but will see how the franchise is received in the West first)
Most people don't seem to understand the purpose behind the battle system:
At first glance/try, it comes across as boringly simple, particularly when fighting lower ranked/level yo-kai. But there is a method to the madness and the mini-games to unleash the Soultimate moves. By trying to concentrate on so many things at once (spinning your yo-kai in and out, purifying the ones that have taken status damage, the mini-games, targeting and using items) you have to keep on your toes and know when to do these things. It is boring when you take on weaker yo-kai but involves a great deal of strategy when engaging in boss battles which are generally a major leap in difficulty compared to normal battles. You have to know when to do a soultimate, when to heal/revive or boost with items, when/where to target a yo-kai's weak spot, when to shift your team for offense or defense.... The demo did a poor job of explaining anything but it's far more clear in the full game
@TerrapinJess I, for one, am most certainly looking forward to ot, as are my children. Imported from Japan when it first came out and have loved it since. Kids liked watching me play it and have been pretty hyped since its Western announcement. They're into the anime (as am I) and can't wait to get the toys as well. I have all the games and can't wait for Youkai Watch 3 when it releases next year in Japan. Really hoping Yo-kai Watch succeeds in the West as Level-5 says the sequels' localization hinges heavily on how the first game is received, so I've been shouting to all my old gamer buddies from college to get it (most have agreed since they're Level-5 fans anyway). Really want the sequels because they improve drastically on the first game (far more content and nearly 100+ new Youkai to befriend, even ones you can't catch in the first game)
Yay! My kids are gonna be so excited to play the demo. It'll tide them over until the game comes out at least. For now, they've got Chibi-Robo Zip Lash, Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer, and I have Corpse Party Blood Drive (Vita) until then!
@Trinexx I wouldn't be surprised if we do see at least one Direct before end of the year as there are plenty of games Nintendo has coming out that they still need to give details on. For example, Yo-kai Watch releases in North America in November and there are still many stubborn nay-sayers that are calling it nothing more than a "cheap pokemon rip-off/wannabe" and these individuals haven't truly gotten to see for themselves some of the things the game has to offer. Nintendo would do well to have a direct centered around the game (or giving it a feature spot with several other games) to further detail what the game is. I also won't be surprised if a Direct takes place after the intial "testing of the waters" with the smaller n3DS if it sells well with news of more bundles and even standalone systems coming to market. In short, we'll likely see a Direct before year's end.
@rjejr Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up having each region take the reigns of their respective NDs for now. I mean, I'm sure he was aware how big of a success NDs were before Iwata-san's passing. Every time a Direct was announced, it would be plastered on all gaming sites and social media and buzz would be high with speculation so they probably wouldn't want to tune out their fans by stopping Directs completely. There will likely be less for now until things are firmly cemented in place for the company as a whole, but I see them likely having eavh head for each region attend a meeting (likely a teleconference) and lay out what things should be discussed overall and then let them have creative freedom to present the Direct. But you are likely right that "unified" NDs (done for each region at the same time with Iwata stating central stuff before handing the presentation over to Reggie or whoever) is gone.
@Rocky2418 I'm pretty confident we'll get some standalone models as well as other game bundles on the market before end of the year. As I said over on NeoGAF, if this system's availability were really meant to be a "one game deal" then there'd be no reason for Nintendo to drop the price of the 2DS recently (even though it really doesn't sell well). If I recall correctly, I believe Nintendo stopped producing the original XL not to long after announcing the New XL for the west (haven't seen any new special editions for the original XL since February) and are letting the current stock in the wild dwindle down which leaves us with the 2DS ($99) amd the New XL ($199). This leaves room for a "middle-ground" device, that being the New 3DS
@Rocky2418 No problem. As much I just wanna dive in after the long wait, I'm holding out for a black system to arrive for myself and my,son. One of my daughters did want the bundle so I preordered for her but my other daughter and neice aren't interested in the game but do want a white model system, so holding,out for standalone systems to hit the market or at least more favorable bundles
@Rocky2418
Don't know how to post pics in the comments but if you click the picture in the article to enlarge and then increase the size, it says in the banner that states "Full Download Included" it mentions a code. Normally, there is a clear distinction (like on the Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate XL) stating that game is pre-installed if that's the case
@maceng Waaaaaaaaay ahead of you, lol. Already got a collection of 13 different faceplates from Japan, including Xenoblade, Splatoon and even the Fire Emblem if set
@freaksloan Seriously, check yourself. As was discussed by many when the issue came up months ago. Many people have a variety of reasons for wanting this so-called "inferior" product. My kids hate the XLs and have wanted the regular sized n3DS since they saw the one I imported from Japan. They love the thought of collecting faceplates as well to change up the system's look to what they want. I want one because it'll fit in my purse since I don't carry a huge bag and the faceplates mean not having to shell out $200+ (or $100+ with a trade in of an old system) for a limited edition when I want to change the look of my system. So get off your high horse and stop putting down other people's personal preferences. What someone else wants should not be any of your concern anyway. Have a good day.
@MarvinTheMartian
Thank you. I mean, seriously, the argument is kind of sillly from my perspective because not everyone likes the same thing and a person's interest in a particular subject/genre is no more valid than another person whom has a different set of tastes.
If I may be as so frank to give another example: I love to read and tend to gravitate toward fantasy, horror, thriller and classical works. Recently I read through several written works of the infamous Marquis de Sade and thoroughly enjoyed them. In my book club, since I was the one that suggested reading Justine and 120 Days of Sodom (I had long desired to read these works for myself but wished to discuss with others on his work), I asked the others (men and women) for their feedback on the two books. It was almost a unanimous dislike for everyone else but we did sit and discuss our differing views in a civil manner and, at the end of the meeting, I (can't speak for the others) at least walked away with valid insight from both sides of the fence and respect for their reasoning behind their discomfort with the books (his work really isn't for the faint of heart) and would hope they felt the same for my reasoning since I enjoyed them.
As I said above in my post, we all do not have to like the same thing but we should be respectful to those with differing tastes. I play these games but my husband (who is Japanese and almost as big an otaku as I am) is certainly no fan of them yet he respects that I like them
@Ralizah Yeah, I did omit that part >.< And yeah, I can certainly understand your gripes about how the reviewer tackled the game. However, I have always been firm in my belief that one must experience something for themselves. I get the purpose of reviews, but reviewers are nonetheless injecting their personal feelings into their final conclusion. And while that's not a bad thing in itself, our personal feelings are still likely to be different. Many times reviewers have been known to outright praise certain games but, to the actual consumer, the game might not live up to their own expectations upon trying it for themselves and vice-versa. Hence why I take all reviews (professional ones anyway) with a grain of salt. Sure, I'll read some consumer reviews because there's a range of differing opinions and not just one, but at the end of the day, I want to know for myself whether something is enjoyable or noth
As a 27 year old mother of 3, I have quite enjoyed the Senran Kagura series, so... Just exactly what does that make me since people are insulting the fans of the series by calling them "basement-dwelling weeaboos" and other such nonsense?
I get it, not everyone will be open to its high level of fanservice but players that enjoy these games are, in my honest opinion, no more disgusting than people whom enjoy gratuitous gore-fest games or love My Little Pony. I mean, what would you call female fans that enjoy games like Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2, games with a rather shameless protagonist? I also like games such as Oneechanbara Z2. Man or woman, games are for entertainment. Like all forms of media for entertainment purposes, you pick what caters to your tastes and move on. Do I, as a woman, feel objectified by a game like Senran Kagura? Not in the slightest. But another woman might and I respect that stance. I'm not gonna tell her to toughen up and grow thicker skin because of it.
In a nutshell, if it's not your cup of tea, fine. But don't go about insulting those whom do enjoy it. Heck, I have been known to play these titles in public and not bat an eye when people crane their necks to see what I'm doing. Why? Because there's no shame to be had.
PS: Don't really care about the score because it's one person's opinion and bears no weight on my decision to buy a game I want to experience for myself
Why do they not have Yo-kai Watch as a playable title? The only way to raise awareness and dispel the current negative stigma a lot of players have against the game (calling it a Pokemon clone when it's clearly not) is to let them experience it for themselves
@DreamOn I believe if many people give Yokai Watch an honest chance it actually could catch on and be successful. Also depends on how aggresively it ends up being marketed given its cross-media with the anime, toys, game and manga
I thoguht all of these were Nintendo-published (or Collaborations) as the third-party games I'm aware of (Senran Kagura 2, DBZ, etc) aren't on the list but definitely coming out this year
Chibi Robo, Triforce Heroes, and Yo-kai Watch (most anticipated) are my day-1 3DS choices from the list but I'm still on the fence about Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer. I also plan to indulge in Senran Kagura 2, Return to PopoloCrois, Drangon Ball Z: Extreme Butoden and Project X Zone 2. As for amiibo: Ganondorf, all three Yarn Yoshi, Isabelle, K.K Slider, Mewtwo and Chibi Robo.
@Daemonite As someone that has played the games, they are in no way "crappy". Will it appeal to everyone? No. But do not put down those that are excited for it and wish to spread awareness on the franchise to others that might not have even given it a second thought. We just want to see people give the game an honest try before outright bashing it, is all.
This! Played the first game and all three versions of the 2nd game (eagerly awaiting 3's release next year) on my import system and loved it to bits and I grew up a diehard Pokemaniac during my youth.
Yeah, it borrows "some" elements of Pokemon, but honestly all monster catching/battling games do (and remember, Pokemon borrowed some elements from the Shin Megami series). Now, is this gonna snowball to Pokemon levels? No, that ship sailed in the 90s and Western kids are more likely to play on a phone or tablet nowadays. Heck, when I worked at Gamestop for the holidays, more parents asked about regular DS systems than the 3DS (origianal or New) and I just don't see too many kids with handheld systems as I did in my childhood (only just recently turned 27 this past weekend so I'm not that old). The Nintendo handheld is mostly used among the older Nintendo fans which far outnumbers what children today do use them. So for the Yo-kai Watch franchise to be even remotely successful outside of Japan, we Nintendo fans need to support it and stop making waves out of stubborn nostalgia for Pokemon. All of my children play Nintendo handhelds because I've made it a point to expose them to it since gaming is my leisure. They are excited because they have seen me playing the Japanese versions and watch me do multiple replays while their pokemon games have sat untouched for the past 4-5 months in their desks because they lost interest after completing the story.
Tl; ldr: People need to stop being blinded by nostalgia for the Pokemon franchise and give Yo-kai Watch an honest-to-goodness try and not simply bash on it because of what very few similarities it shares with Pokemon. The game is not perfect, I admit, but it takes steps in directions that Pokemon, after 20 years, still has trouble embracing. And it won't share the same level of success outside of Japan but it can still be a success nonetheless.

@manu0 MGSV just came out so it won't show on the charts until next week
Re: The Smaller New Nintendo 3DS Model is Coming to North America
@Rocky2418
I'm pretty confident we'll get some standalone models as well as other game bundles on the market before end of the year.
Re: The Smaller New Nintendo 3DS Model is Coming to North America
@Rocky2418
No problem.
Re: The Smaller New Nintendo 3DS Model is Coming to North America
@Rocky2418
Re: The Smaller New Nintendo 3DS Model is Coming to North America
@maceng
Costs a pretty penny with shipping if you're only buying one set of plates, so I'd suggest going through the inventory on the site and picking out multiple things to make the purchase worthwhile

Re: The Smaller New Nintendo 3DS Model is Coming to North America
@maceng
Waaaaaaaaay ahead of you, lol. Already got a collection of 13 different faceplates from Japan, including Xenoblade, Splatoon and even the Fire Emblem if set
Re: The Smaller New Nintendo 3DS Model is Coming to North America
@AVahne
Many shots of the box say that it's a download code and not pre-installed
Re: The Smaller New Nintendo 3DS Model is Coming to North America

Re: Review: SENRAN KAGURA 2: Deep Crimson (3DS)
@MarvinTheMartian
Re: Review: SENRAN KAGURA 2: Deep Crimson (3DS)
Re: Nintendo Confirms Xenoblade Chronicles X Panel, Playable Games and a Nindies Lounge for PAX Prime
Why do they not have Yo-kai Watch as a playable title? The only way to raise awareness and dispel the current negative stigma a lot of players have against the game (calling it a Pokemon clone when it's clearly not) is to let them experience it for themselves
Re: Updated 'Roadmap' Infographic Shows Nintendo's 2015 Release Line-Up
@DreamOn
I believe if many people give Yokai Watch an honest chance it actually could catch on and be successful. Also depends on how aggresively it ends up being marketed given its cross-media with the anime, toys, game and manga
Re: Updated 'Roadmap' Infographic Shows Nintendo's 2015 Release Line-Up
@ikki5
I thoguht all of these were Nintendo-published (or Collaborations) as the third-party games I'm aware of (Senran Kagura 2, DBZ, etc) aren't on the list but definitely coming out this year
Re: Updated 'Roadmap' Infographic Shows Nintendo's 2015 Release Line-Up
Chibi Robo, Triforce Heroes, and Yo-kai Watch (most anticipated) are my day-1 3DS choices from the list but I'm still on the fence about Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer.
Re: Yo-kai Watch Hits North America on 6th November to Kick Off Bombardment of Tie-Ins and Promotions
@Daemonite
As someone that has played the games, they are in no way "crappy". Will it appeal to everyone? No. But do not put down those that are excited for it and wish to spread awareness on the franchise to others that might not have even given it a second thought. We just want to see people give the game an honest try before outright bashing it, is all.
Re: Yo-kai Watch Hits North America on 6th November to Kick Off Bombardment of Tie-Ins and Promotions
@Kimite
