It's time once again for another Nintendo Download Update, and this week's North American line-up has some tempting options. There are four 3DS retail games, including a Nintendo platformer and an RPG with impressive pedigree, while M2 remasters another wonderful SEGA game for the eShop. On Wii U we have some interesting download-only options along with a GBA title, while 3DS HOME Theme fans even have some choices. So, let's get to the details.
Missed the European Nintendo Download details earlier this week? Don't despair, the information you need is right here.
Wii U eShop
Race the Sun (Flippfly, $10.00) - With a behind-craft perspective, you fly through varied environments (which randomise daily) and try to avoid obstacles while keeping on track with the Sun. This one's certainly had some critical acclaim for previous versions; our review will be with you very soon.
Whispering Willows (Abstraction Games, $9.99) - A narrative driven 2D adventure that was originally on Ouya, you play as a young girl called Elena who can project her spirit out of her body; it sounds interesting as a concept, but we'll see whether it has the right spirit in our review.
Perpetual Blast (Yiannos Efthymiou, $3.99) - A space flight game, your task is to blast away a lot of containers; as far as we can tell that's the extent of the gameplay. It does support gyro controls on the GamePad, to its credit, so we'll boldly go where few reviewers go soon.
Wii U Virtual Console
Pocky & Rocky With Becky (Natsume, $6.99) - The GBA has more Virtual Console goodness, with Natsume bringing us this action / adventure / shooter; you embark on a quest across seven stages to defeat an evil Hydra Dragon and a army of mythical creatures. We'll bring you a review soon.
Wii U eShop Promotion
Buy or own Runbow and receive 30% off select Wii U and 3DS eShop games until 22nd October.
Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts
Little Inferno (Tomorrow Corporation, $4.99 until 15th October, normally $9.99)
KEYTARI: 8-bit Music Maker (Famous Gamous, $4.99 until 30th October, normally $7.99)
Explody Bomb (Alkterios Games, $1 until 29th October, normally $1.99)
3DS Retail Downloads
Chibi-Robo!: Zip Lash (Nintendo, $29.99) - One of Nintendo's lesser known mascots is given an opportunity at stardom in a platformer, with the cute robot's plug being a vital weapon and means of exploration. Retail editions also come with an amiibo, and this release is certainly an interesting arrival in terms of giving the IP a push for the mainstream. We admired this one's charm but had a few reservations in our Chibi-Robo!: Zip Lash review. Available from 9th October.
The Legend of Legacy (Atlus, $39.99) - If you want a game name that emphasizes the whole point of an RPG storyline, then Legend of Legacy seems like a good call. Developed by FuRyu, with hugely respected industry figures involved such as Tomomi Kobayashi (SaGa series), composer Masashi Hamauzu (SaGa, Final Fantasy XIII), and writer Masato Kato (Chrono Trigger), this title adopts formations in battles and is a campaign that can be tackled through seven perspectives from the core cast. Available from 13th October.
Goosebumps: The Game (GameMill Entertainment, $29.99) - Available from 13th October.
The Smurfs (Ubisoft, $29.99) - Available from 13th October.
3DS eShop
3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (SEGA, $5.99) - The brilliant M2-developed series of retro SEGA titles given new life on the 3DS continues with this highly regarded Sonic title. When debates are had over the best ever Sonic game this one is normally in the conversation, which at the time added the spin dash to speed the mascot up. We'll check this out and dash into a review.
3DS eShop Temporary Discounts
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked (Atlus, $9.99 from 12th October to 26th October, normally $29.99)

That's everything for this week in North America, let us know what you plan to download in the poll and comments below.
Comments (103)
Those Sega Themes sound good.
Chibi Robo and 3D Sonic 2 for me! No nothing for me!
Nothing for me on the eshop, but I am getting the bundle of Chibi robo.
Hope Chibi Robo sells well. That franchise needs to continue.
EDIT: Sonic 2 is MINE! Gotta go fast!
Probably getting Pocky and Rocky!
Overclocked is tempting if only to sell my copy and always have it with me. Time to check that dl file!
I'm definitely getting 3D Sonic 2.
I'll be getting Sonic (my first purchase on 3DS in quite some time), but man, I sure would love some METROID ZERO MISSION, Nintendo. Pocky and Becky and whoever is not a good substitute.
SMT:DSO for $10, thanks. I've been itching for a handheld RPG and this will be my first foray into the SMT series. Will also keep a keen eye out for what those Runbow discounts are.
3D Sonic 2 and maybe one of themes.
getting the themes. legend of legacy theme is pretty cheap. only 1.30 here. you Americans are lucky. Chibi Robo is 39.99 on the Canadian eShop and Legend of Legacy is $50.99. Damn canadian dollar means I get gouged when it comes to games
I'm interested in 3D Sonic 2 but I don't think I'll be downloading it this week since I'm picking up the Chibi-Robo Bundle tomorrow from GameStop and getting The Legend of Legacy Tuesday from GameStop also.
Chibi-Robo bundle, of course! Also there is a Chibi-Robo theme?! Sold!
Definitely getting 3D Sonic 2. SAAAAAY-GUUUUUH!
Looking at the games on sale...I might get Little Inferno since I still don't have that yet.
CHIBI-ROBO!!!
Yay, the SEGA themes are coming out in the states! Now we need the Mastersystem theme.
Voted Chibi Robo, because... CHIBI ROBO!
I WOULD get Chibi-Robo, but I still haven't played the original 2006 game yet.
I have a compulsion to do things in order.
Chibi Robo (ordered the amiibo bundle) and the themes
Race the sun and Whispering Willows this week
@BaffleBlend
There is no overarching storyline.
I still have a Sonic 2 genesis poster hanging in my room.
The Wii U VC has been pretty bad for a few weeks now!
Where is Metroid Zero Mission?
And Super Mario RPG??
And Star Fox SNES???
Pre-ordered Legend of Legacy a while back with the artbook and other goodies, can't wait for that to come in. And I'm gonna pick up Chibi-Robo, missed out on all his previous efforts...not this time!
Goosebumps? Hmmm
Do we know what games the Runbow discounts apply to?
Pocky and Rocky!
I did it for the Amiibo...
Sonic 2 sounds really nice, though I still am not sure if Knuckles is playable in it, but I don't see why he wouldn't be. Is it like the other M2 3D Classics, where you can record your playthrough? Legend of Legacy sounds pretty nice too, and with a staff with those much roots, it has to be good! I really want a Chibi Robo before I consider getting that one, though. Just looks too simple so far, and not in a good way such as say...Kirby.
Chibi Robo Zip Lash has a review embargo? That's usually not a good sign.
I hope Europe is getting those Sega Home themes soon too!
Wanna see a review of Pocky and Rocky before I buy. The gamespot review of its original release doesn't look promising. But it looks cute so there's a plus :3
Will get Legend of Legacy eventually, physical version of course.
@Wuneye They'll probably reveal it on the eShop official page later today.
They really seem to be pushing Chibi Robo lately.
Maybe Little Inferno.
@Spoony_Tech I am Also tempted to download OverClocked
We just need this for a happy day
For a company with such a great back catalog and VC sections on each of their current hardware you would think Nintneod would have better offers whenever new games release. Chibi Robo this week and Yoshi next week. Can't recall exactly what system each and every one of those previous games are on but surely something could be on offer. I know we purchased Yoshi's Story on Wiiware. A lot of people on here complained at the time b/c it was too easy but my kids and I put a lot of fun hours into it. Don't think it ever made it to Wii U VC but now would be a good time.
And the Yoshi demo is available to play in Target. It's a $50 retail game, might be a good idea to put that demo on home consoles a week in advance to get people excited for the game release next week.
Oh well, at least we got another Ouya port.
I'm only knockin' Wii U BTW, 3DS seems like it has a lot going on, 3 themes even. Still waiting for themes on Wii U so that bright white wara wara background can stop blinding me, maybe a nice shade of fuscia, teal or magenta.
Been searching Google for those 30% off games, but so far no luck. I'll report back anything I can find, though it might mean waiting another hour for the store to update.
@rjejr iota a real bummer but Nintendo doesn't exactly offer to many deals on the Eshop for their software. Once in a great while they will shock you with a deal. But it's a long wait in between
Wow. Worst week the wiiu has had in a while. Where's my zero mission and megaman zero 4, nintendo??
@rjejr
Yeah you would think they would get in gear and offer some of the older games in series when a new one comes out. Like Chibi-Robo: Plug Into Adventure and Park Patrol to get people excited about the new one that maybe haven't played a game in the series before. Plus, like you said, Yoshi's Story and then Star Fox and Star Fox 64 when the new one comes out. Their huge catalog gives them the opportunity to fill gaps between the major releases.
$10 for Devil Survivor Overclocked is nut! And really tempting even though I already have a physical copy.
@Windy Well Yoshi Story doesn't have to be "a deal", they could just offer it on the Wii U eShop. I think I played Chibi Robo on the Gamecube, we are still waiting for Gamecube VC games 3 years later. And dual Gamepad support.
I think people are rightly going to be a wee bit skeptical w/ whatever claims Nintendo makes about the NX. TVii anyone?
Whoa, Devil Survivor's a great buy at 9.99. Good week.
@rdrunner1178 - "Their huge catalog gives them the opportunity to fill gaps between the major releases."
I wasn't really thinking about filling gaps, more about simply making money. There are lots of people who when they see a new game come out want to play the older games, even if it isn't a series. When SMM came out they could have offered half-off sales on whatever old Mario games are on Wii U VC. Or since it's Nintnedo maybe only 10% off. They really need to hire a marketing person at HQ.
Sonic 2 for me.
For anyone who hasn't pulled the trigger on Devil Survivor yet: GO FOR IT. The game has hundreds of hours of gameplay, and HUGE replayability. $10 is a crazy good price.
@rjejr you know what's funny I used the TVii. All my components worked with it. As Far as VC goes Nintendo seems hell bent on not satisfying gamers with what they want released. I see people every week begging for Metroid and a couple other high profile should be VC releases. They don't listen and don't want to listen.
I may still get the YGO game that's on sale. Not sure why it isn't mentioned here when the sale is still on-going.
I thought Giana Sisters Directors Cut was out this week? Is that a physical release only then??
Okay. Who voted for The Smurfs?!
Pre-ordered Chibi Robo. I have Race the Sun on my Vita. It's pretty intense. They should have released this on the Wii U sooner- I think it might look better on the Gamepad with the bigger screen.
I refuse to buy anything on the eShop again until Gumshoe and Stack'em are released. Bring on the USB R.O.B. and a reason to bring back the WiiMote Zapper.
SUCH A GOOD WEEK...
Here's what I'll be picking up:
Chibi Robo (Physical with Amiibo!)
Sonic 2
Game Gear Theme
Had Legend of Legacy preordered but cancelled.
I swear if Sega releases a compilation of all these 3D classics one day and I end up with 2 copies of Sonic 2....
@Ralizah you're right! I LOVE devil survivor
If I had a 3DS I would get Sonic 2,but other than that, nothing for me...
Need more SNES VC love.
Almost feels like NA is being punished for the Federation Force backlash. i didn't care when SMB3 or SMK took awhile because we still had it as a playable option on the vWii VC. Zero Mission has only been released through GBA cartridge .... and there's seriously no excuse on why it's taking this long.
Do you think devil survivor over locked is a good entry point to the series for a shin noob? Also been wanting retro city rampage now is the time! Chili robo seems cool and I would get the retail version but not sold yet. .. like people are saying a old school remake before release would have been hype!
Picking up Chibi Robo tomorrow. Disappointed we didn't get Mario Sports Mix like Europe, but it's cool I can wait. As long as North America gets it eventually
@jessejamez7166 Devil Survivor is a turn based strategy spin-off of the main SMT line. While it has a lot of which makes SMT great, its not really a great example of what SMT is really about. I'd get SMT IV myself for the better intro to SMT as a whole.
Here's the list off 30% off games if you own/buy Runbow on Wii U eShop. It looks to me a lot like the Humble Nindie list, but I could be wrong.
Wii U
Chariot
Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition
Scram Kitty
Mutant Mudds Deluxe
Sportsball
Stealth Inc 2
SteamWorld Dig
Teslagrad
The Fall
Xeodrifter
3DS
Azure Striker Gunvolt
Mutant Mudds
SteamWorld Dig
Xeodrifter
Waiting for Xenoblade Chronicles on WiiU VC ever since Europe got it months ago. I haven't focused waiting on one VC title besides when Japan and Europe had got Super Smash Brothers 64 on Wii like early in the year and NA finally released it the week of Christmas.. The wait is killing me.
...>_>
Another week, another lack of 3DS VC support from Nintendo. At least Sega gave us Sonic 2 3D.
Google whispering willows, looks pretty good in the gameplay vids.
@Jim_Purcell I see Thanks I've been wanting smt4 as well. Dat discount dough is quite tempting probably just download it and play it after smt4
@rjejr eI noticed last night that the iOS AppStore is doing their own Humble Bundles now too. They have 4 Kemco games for 9.99. I'm pretty sure we will never see that deal in the Eshop from Kemco even if they stack the Eshop with RPG's
I'm tempted to get Wispering willows but I'm saving my credit for Petitte Computer Version 3 next week
@Windy I don't own an iOS device, but now I'll have to keep my eye open for any Android deals, thanks. I wonder how much Android coverage we'll get on here once the DeNA games start coming out? Assuming they'll be on both iO S and Android, not sure if that's official..
Chibi Robo Zip Lash Amiibo Bundle
Legend of Legacy Collectors Edition
Sonic 2 3D
@Windy Good Lord YES!!!!
Nothing for me this week, though I can't deny the variety on offer. At least there's some well-needed love for the 3DS eshop!
Sonic 2 and Sega themes for me. I can't wait to play those bonus stages in 3d!
It's been a while since I saw the trailer for Whispering Willows, but it intrigued me. I'll wait for the review.
Ill be getting LoL soon as my pre-order arrives in the mail
Nothing for me, getting ready for Fallout 4 next month!
Been waiting for Legend of Legacy! I'll prob pick up Sonic 2 also!
Sonic 2, and the Sega themes!
Another week, another lack of 3DS VC support from Nintendo.
Don't expect any next week either. Or any next month. Or any at all for the remainder of the year. The 3DS Virtual Console is over... finished!
Definitely picking up Sonic 2, like everyone else. I was torn about the Legend of Legacy demo so I'll probably wait for a few reviews to surface before I snag it. That launch edition is so beautiful though.
ONE of Europe's FOUR VC games this week...screw you, NoA.
Oh dear God those themes!!! <3<3<3<3
I was laid off from my Graphic Design job yesterday. So sadly Chibi Robo and Yoshi with their respective amiibo will be out of my reach. I did go ahead and get 3D Sonic 2. Thats reasonable. And it seems too awesome to pass up.
Honestly not a bad next couple of weeks. Chibi-Robo tonight, Legend of Legacy and Yoshi's Woolly World next week, and Dragon Ball Z, Fatal Frame and Zelda Triforce Heroes the week after.
Not sure which ones I plan on getting.
Pocky & Rocky pls
@Zach777 I'm aware of that. It's just a compulsion. I guess I like to see how gameplay and stuff changes gradually over time and all that.
Sanic.
I just wanna say that NOA is horrible!! HORRIBLE!!!
Europe got 4 vc games this week!! 4!!
We still get one a week!!😡😡
@joey302 NOA aim's to please.
@Sonicfan11589 I have the Sonic 3 Genesis poster in mine!
@Captain_Gonru Probably comes as no surprise, but I think we don't get enough VC games b/c they are either just totally incompetent or simply refuse to hire people to do the work. And now that totally incompetent lot are probably in complete disarray. It's Oct, no new Club Nitneod, no price drops - everybody talks about Wii U but 3DS XL came out over 3 years ago for $199, guess what it costs now? - and both the Wii U and 3DS Q4 game lists aren't blowing anybody away - though personally the 3DS list looks OK w/ DBZ, Zelda and Pokemon, maybe all offshoots, but the names should get a few sales, even if mistakenly. And HHD sounds more like what the handheld crowd wants than aF sounds like what the home console crowd wants. All I see is SMM in a Walmart exclusive bundle and scrambling to get amiibo in stock b/c thats all they have to sell this holiday. And I'm still waiting for GameCube VC and dual Gamepad support. I can't imagine what it would take to get me to buy an NX.
Just Sanic this week but that's perfectly fine since I have no money for anything else.
@Captain_Gonru I miss all the stuff I got from Club Nitnedo. for the upcoming bar mitzvah we are using 2 decks of cards, the blank Mario, Yoshi and Luigi cards as thank you cards, and the very cool MM (just for you) messenger bag for people to put their gift envelopes in. Also got games like WW HD, from MK8 but I think it was thru CN. And that Wario game, though I forget why, maybe reaching Platinum level? Oh and at the party we are using the SSB CD's for cocktail hour music. That's a whole lot of stuff - free. And I consider it free, I'm not the type of person who spends $50 or even $10 to get coins. And SSB Mewtwo was free thru their as well. What have they given us lately?
And I'm also still annoyed they let the DDP lapse. I always knew the end date - you may have noticed I have a thing for dates - but I always assumed it would go from being for "deluxe" owners to everybody, maybe dropping from 10% to 5%. Just something for people to be excited about when shopping online. They have been having some sales of late, but CN ending soon after the DDP kind of sticks w/ me as a common event.
@Captain_Gonru - "or even a freaking announcement about a replacement, outside of nebulous promises"
I watched this video again yesterday - b/c I'm not usually in enough of a bad mood I constantly need to add fuel to the fire - and watching these 2 gaming big wigs joke about us playing their games THIS YEAR, which we obviously aren't, is kind of even more irritating in retrospect. I actually think that's the very last we've seen of Zelda U, over 10 months of nothing.
http://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/zeldas-wii-u-adventure-arrives-fall-2015-first-look-debuts-game-awards/
"No worries" he says.
@TerrapinJess Hopefully if they do release a physical Sega 3d Classics you can use it to play multiplayer against the digital copies.
@eSocrates YEAH! That would be a must. I don't see why they wouldn't be able to get that to work. If it all uses the same protocols and everything; it's either reading from the cart or the SD card.
@Captain_Gonru Have you given any serious thought to what the NX will be?
I still think it needs to be a handheld, b/c their home consoles sales aren't doing very well, Wii was a fluke. 4DS or DS4. Lose the 3D, TV out. Maybe have a set top component for multiplayer or game storage, but I just don't see why any new home console would do better than Wii U.
If it is a home console, then it's just a Wii U w/o the Gamepad, but it supports the Gamepad b/c it is a Wii U w/o it. Well maybe 2 Wii U duct taped together to give it enough horse power for dual Gamepad support and maybe a few PS4 ports. But that's where I run into trouble, b/c if it is a Wii U 2, then it will still be difficult to port too, even if it is over powered, but if it's a PC architecture and doesn't have BC for Wii U games, then what's the point? I want my couch co-op Spaltoon and Starfox dammit. I don't see Ninteod going PS5 power at this point, slightly past PS4 at most, so 2 years after it releases PS5 crushes it - see what the PS2 did to my poor Dreamcast.
So it boils down to -
Handheld - so it likely won't be powerful enough for Zelda U
Wii U 2, no Gamepad - so you won't be able to play Zelda U
NX - PS4/X1 power and port friendly, so no Wii U BC, so no Zelda U
And NX still could be a 3rd pillar $100 streaming "retro" machine, that Nintendo says will someday play Wii U games "in the cloud" like Gamecube games on Wii U VC. Though at this point I think a dedicated handheld could support that type of service, so it probably isn't Sega Gear.
@Captain_Gonru I wrote a long reply to this yesterday but my wife or kids kicked me off the PC before I could hit the reply button. I'll try and remember it later.
Is it just me, or does Devil Survivor still show up at its regular price on the eShop? On the other hand, Shin Megami Tensei IV is showing up at a $5 discount. Am I missing something?
@Captain_Gonru I'm hoping to be a little more sane once the bar mitzvah is done on Saturday. Not any happier, but coherent enough to hit the reply button after typing. (Mets playoffs are driving me insane as well.) But yeah, I think we'll be discussing NX a few more times before it releases.
@Windy I went ahead and bought the digital version. I check in the game stop website and they're giving 11$ if you're a pro member so it was pretty much an even split and cost me nothing really. It's worth it to get rid of something and have a different game in my system to play in case I want to.
@rjejr Well you're out of luck with those Mets anyways so just give it up lol.
Back to the Future prediction holds more weight then the world's ready for.
