@PhhhCough byy reading, I think he means something as Byzantine and outlandish as a Yakuza style game starting Captain Falcon, with racing being a portion of the game.
...
I might just want a Yakuza style open world bounty hunter game...
They are probably doing an Indie Direct because they have new indie games to sell for Christmas. First party news is probably going to come after the new year, as they lay out their 2021 plans.
@Strictlystyles I have zero nostalgia for Pikmin (I was playing Halo on my Xbox at the time), buy my kids are all over Pikmin 3 Deluxe, a game that came out on the Wii U before they were born. The broad appeal is broader than you may think.
@BulbasaurusRex what's weird to me about the review, is that playing it myself, the old Fire Emblem actually does hold up well. I went expecting it to be pretty rough, but itn plays well, nice and simple gameplay and good music and visuals for 8-bit. I've had fun with it, and the only other game in the series I've played is Three Houses. I was actually surprised at how unchanged the core wargame loop was over thirty years, and it was nice playing it without any cruft.
@LaytonPuzzle27 maybe not the near future, but it wouldn't surprise me if it came to NSO sometime after they delist the game. I wouldn't even be mad, I understand how complex localization of older games is (it requires a lot of programming, not just a plug and play text), and I'd be happy having paid for a localization that wouldn't exist otherwise to get early access.
@SwitchVogel I've seen toddlers still having a blast with NES Zelda: the games hold up just fine, and are better than most modern games (no offense to any game that happens to not be as good as the Legend of Zelda, but thems the breaks).
It seems absurd to judge the audio and visual elements outside of their context as a NES game, since this is an inexpensive clearly retro game. For the NES, it's top shelf stuff.
I've only ever played Three Houses previously, but this was pretty easy to get into. Good game, I can see why it launched a franchise.
@BLD they didn't give a cease and desist to a charity: they gave a cease and desist to a for-profit operation using their IP who happened to be giving some percentage of profits to charity. Charity isn't a shield from legal exercise of rights.
Based on observations of my own children, Nintendo's current products definitely appeal to young players. One of the best reasons to stick to a winning formula, like Mario Kart, is that new players are born every day.
So, about Bandai Namco not doing much on the Switch:
Big HD games take 3-4 years to make.
We know now thanks to Capcom's unpleasant leak that Capcom is now leaning into the Switch hard come 2021, as their primary platform:
Not coincidentally, 2021 is about 3-4 years after the Switch proved a megahit in Japan.
Given the turnaround from when the Switch began selling, and when third parties would have noticed that and started development on big games...I think we'll see more in the back half of the Switch lifecycle from companies like Bandai Namco.
Yup, pre-ordered and already loaded on my machine. I love 8-bit games and war games, so it's a bit of a no-brainer (I was the poor deprived target audience in 90's America...).
I had the precise conversation from the trailer about "What's Fire Emblem??" when my friend got his new Gamecube and Smash for hi ls 16th birthday, so that trailer made me laugh so hard.
@NEStalgia on the contrary: Splatoon, Arms, Ring-fit Adventure, etc...creativity is still active at Nintendo. They are more fiscally responsible than Microsoft or Sony, but they have room for games to underperform because of that and are still taking big risks.
It looks like they built this game for the Switch, and scaled it up for other systems to use things like ray tracing: probably the norm for third party games for a while.
There were lots of voice lines found when datamining Fire Emblem: Three Houses that never got used by Koei Tecmo for anything. Koei Tecmo leaves a lot of junk data in the games...
@Xylnox they ay have made a mistake for making a piece of hardware to be the market leader, but Microsoft has given up on chasing that: they want to be the video game Netflix, and are doing well at that.
@Ks123 For sure, which is pretty crazy when you compare how good the existing sales numbers for major Switch games versus earlier Nintendo consoles (the Wii line being the exception).
@QueenKittenWrite sure they developing for the PS5, but they aren't commiting to PS5 exclusives. Third parties won't lead Sony in that transition, so cross-gen games will be the norm for a while, which is a vicious cycle.
@ghostrider135 Well, sure eventually, but Pikmin 3 was a Wii U launch title when there were not other games, and the Switch version has already outsold it's whole lifetime in less than a month. That's not just doing better, that's impressively better.
@nessisonett they are not mutually exclusive, but TV console gaming is much less of a scene in 2020 compared to 1995, whereas handhelds have grown in popularity. That's not necessarily triumphalism, that's just analyzing the market. Konami doing a mobile board game sells better than Call of Duty (also why Konami dumped AAA development). There hasn't been a wildly successful pure home console in Japan since the PS2
@Morph I mean, I would expect that the small Xbox community in Japan is fairly dedicated, and probably all have GamePass, making upgrading a bit if a no-brainer. Doesn't mean the scene is growing much.
@Desa but @nessisonett is right that is a bit of a silly attitude. Nintendo is a corporation, not our friend, and I am not a shareholder. I am happy to see the Switch so successful, as that means I won't relive the WIi U ownership experience. I am not really impressed by Ninth Generation gaming so far, but I was never impressed by the Eighth Generation leap, either. It feels like we are still playign Seventh Generatio ngames with better performance nubmers (Demon Souls, GTAV, Last of Us, Uncharted, Gears of War, Halo, God of War, Assassin's Creed...)
@pdapanda reaistically, sicne the PS5 will play PS4 games, we'll probably see a long tail for Japanese companies doing a Switch/PS4 strategy, with PS5 owners being able to get slightly nicer performance from the PS4 version.
Globally, not even Sony has committed to full PS5-exclusive software support. Only Demon Souls is PS5 exclusive and tech demo, and it has not done amazingly so far in terms of sales. If Sony won't go full exclusive, third parties won't either, particularly in Japan.
@nessisonett yeah, gloating is kind of silly: buy comparisons in these sorts of sales threads make sense, as it helps us understand what decisions companies might make in the future. More Switches sold, more Switch games sold, means more Switch games get made. PS5, Xbox, I'm indifferent, though rising tides float all boats.
@nessisonett they also only allocated ba small percentage of units to send to Japan: the PS4 did pretty OK, but it was a decline in Japan. Signs point to more of the same for the PS5: respectable but distant second place. Not a punchline like the Xbox, though.
It makes sense for the Japanese market to start with making a game run well on Switch, and then build it up for secondary platforms on the market. Now that Switch is the dominant system in Japan, a lot of developers there will be doing this.
@Razer "art" versus "entertainment" isn't really a legal distinction at all, that's just marketing. Nintendo wants to make popular blockbusters, not arthouse pieces. But the same law applies either way.
@SwitchVogel they are restocking constantly enough that people can find one, but the systems are still leaving shelves like hotcakes. Basically, the stock is big enough the scalpers aren't dominating the supply, but sales aren't slowing down, particularly now with bundles in place.
@BlubberWhale Nintendo said they approached the Big House and asked them to not do Melee, and Big House did not comply. Big House told media outlets this is accurate. Basically, they were told to just do Ultimate, and refused, so they can't do Ultimate now because Nintendo is using their right to control performances. There is no Melee option on the table for online, as far as Nintendo is concerned, and that's all that matters.
@Luffymcduck short answer: they have the right to protect their intellectual property as they see fit, and they should do so due to their obligations to their shareholders. Done.
@Strumpan bad analogy. The legally relevant analogy is a musician who doesn't want their music used in a venue they disapprove of: which, legally, a musician can do. It is called right of performance, and it applies to video games in a commercial context like a paid tournament. Nintendo doesn't even need a good reason, they can shut down a public performance.
@ShadowSniper7 They are different games, one of the key differences is that Ultiamte can be monetized for esports online, while Melee cannot, per the IP holder.
@TG16_IS_BAE Nintendo issued a COD, ergo they had suspicions. They don't need to prove anything, nor does anyone else. The ethical burden here was on the tournament to use Nintendo's IP in line with Nintendo's wishes.
@crashcontrol it doesn't matter if Slippi is make ng a profit, or if Melee for s currently for sale: the tournament was going to make a profit off of emulation and modding, and Nintendo will not abide that. As is their place to decide, no one else
@crashcontrol because Nintendo has the right to stop use of their IP for commercial purposes (such as a paid tournament), then it is perfectly moral of them to do so. It is immoral to use someone else's art for profit without consent.
@Yorumi The 3DS family sold 75.94 million units, the GBA family sold 81.51 million. The 3DS will be the worst selling Nintendo portable platform by the end of this fiscal year.
The problem the Wii U and 3DS faced was the existence of iPhones and Android devices, which the Switch has been able to compete with due to the hybrid setup.
@Yorumi I have no burden of proof to show anything: Nintendo clearly feels it hurts their IP, and that is all that matters in terms of Nintendo's actions. If Nintendo comes to you and says "do not do A, we feel that harms our IP, please do B instead," choosing to proceed with A will result in action. It's as simple as that.
@Xiovanni Bingo. The justification doesn't need to be defended in court, Nintendo can pull the plug on a commercial venue for anything that makes them uncomfortable.
