It looks like Nintendo Switch could be on the verge of smashing new sales records this holiday season, as shoppers flock to stores to grab Black Friday deals in time for Christmas.
This year has seen a number of welcome deals on Switch consoles as retailers battle it out to earn your custom over Black Friday. While most stores have opted for bundles containing games and online subscriptions at reduced prices, others – including a number of supermarkets in the UK – have been slashing the base console's RRP by as much as £50.
The deals have triggered a number of reports stating that consoles are selling out across a variety of different stores. Astris Advisory Japan KK's David Gibson has confirmed one such claim, adding that Switch shipment volumes to the USA over October were up 30% year-on-year, a fact he says could lead to "crazy records" being made.
In Nintendo's latest financial earnings report, the company revealed that it had shifted 12.53 million units in the six months between April and September 2020. Those sales mean that, as of September, the Switch's lifetime sales were at 68.30 million – expect that number to rise significantly as we enter the new year.

Yes,despite less blockbuster games this year, nintendo is still very likely to break the record in the holiday season.
Which means nearly 13 million from Sep to Dec..
Nintendo might sell nearly 29 million switch in a single FY.
It seems very insane, but very possible.
Makes you wonder why UK retailers offered as much as £50 off this week.
£5 says that 3D World and Monster Hunter Rise were originally intended to come out around now and be the holiday titles.
3D World would be perfect for the more casual, non- Wii U owning side of the install base, and Monster Hunter would do massive numbers and push hardware sales in Japan, it would be perfect for both Nintendo and Capcom.
@Munchlax 3D maybe but MH Rise is more likely to be a Switch Pro launch game along with BOTW2
@jarvismp Monster Hunter launches in March, and I find it unlikely that BoTW2 would launch that soon.
BotW2 and MH:Rise would clash somewhat if released together.
Long live the Nintendo Switch, the best console Nintendo has ever made.
BoTW2 will not be ready until next holiday.
But I believed that the MHRise was going to be sold this holiday.
And new switch models launch in next March with Hyrule Warriors: AOC,
However, MHRise got delayed by COVID19, then it moved to next March, and AOC comes out this holiday.
That should explain the reason why AOC had bad framerate.
It was going to have great framerate launching with switch pro.
@Munchlax That’s true enough - maybe April May for Pro. Really think it will launch before the summer.
@Bl4ckb100d Many would disagree, but I personally think it might be the best console anyone ever made (and I started gaming with the Atari 2600 in about 1979). Good enough that Nintendo could probably keep the Switch line going for the next 10 console generations; the hardware could be more powerful but I can't think of a better form factor.
@Bl4ckb100d it has become my favourite console of all time and I am 42! I just love everything about it.
@NGNYS
You need to get rid of that chip on your shoulder bud. Not healthy.
@TheFullAndy yeah him and TG16 have some... issues on the comments sections.
I mean maybe they use thise site to vent or maybe is a personal issue, but... it's just weird
It's the only console available this holiday season.... 😂
@Munchlax I don't know I still think Super Mario 3D AllStars and Hyrule Warrios: AoC are going to be extremely strong this Christmas.
Like to the point if Super Mario 3D World came out around now, it would only probably just take away some of the sales that 3D Allstars would get, instead of generating more sales.
I could see February 2021 being their intended date for 3D World because there's only 1 month and a half of overlap before they stop selling 3D Allstars.
@pixelpatch
Haven't noticed it with TG16 to be honest, usually get on fine with them but this NGNYS guy?!
Issues.
When you have both the handheld and console market in one then of course it's going to be massive, hopefully Nintendo keep the hybrid design for all future consoles aswell
@UltimateOtaku91
I know Nintendo like to mix things up every new generation but they have the perfect console model now with the hybrid Switch.
From now on I just want to see Switch 2, Switch 3 and so forth.
@Bl4ckb100d
Best console but worst controller quality.
Nintendo may not have a major AAA notable piece of software launching this Christmas but their discounts this year are MURDER and it’s not being talked about enough. I’ve never seen so many first party Nintendo games down to $39 and even $29. I have friends asking me which games to get because they’re seeing them at crazy prices and I’m recommending everything. So I think it’s important to watch not only Switch hardware sales setting records this Christmas, but also Nintendo quickly passing lifetime sales numbers for software.
@Dr_Lugae I agree that they are going to be extremely strong, but I think there was originally intended to be more. 3D all stars was probably supposed to be a summer title before COVID delayed both it and 3D World, pushing All Stars closer to World’s original slot, and World out of the anniversary year.
@UltimateOtaku91 Yeah I think so too. I think in the past the separate handheld and consoles were a big strength to Nintendo and an advantage. But now it's a liability since games a bigger than ever and the 3DS was needing exclusive practically console-level games, which the console, WiiU wouldn't receive and vice-versa. Like last gen both systems were getting games that the other could have benefitted from (like imagine if the Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask remakes were on WiiU in HD as well).
But really the WiiU+3DS looking to be outsold by the Switch alone at the current rate. It all points to a hybrid system and a cheaper handheld only lite with the same library being the best way forward.
@pdapanda I think it's more likely that 3D World and Age of Calamity swapped places. The 2nd half of this year has mostly been about SMB 35th anniversary celebrations of which 3D World would fit in meanwhile Age of Calamity would fit more with Zelda 35th anniversary celebrations next year.
@Dr_Lugae also its easier for Nintendo and other developers to concentrate on one system instead of making seperate games for the handheld console and the home console
@Dr_Lugae
I think the point of hybrid is more than just home console + handheld.
home console+ handheld held+ full fledged nintendo softwares on the handheld instead of halfassed ones + a home console that can get rid of television
one plus one makes four this time
@jarvismp @thiswaynow yeah I'm 30, my first console was the OG game boy and I've owned every console Nintendo made ever since, but this is the first time I feel I can say what I said with 100% confidence. My favourite console before this one was the PSP.
@NGNYS,
But that's why you should never listen to the internet posting minorities, they only ever look at things from their own point of view.
@UltimateOtaku91 this is true but its the one lots kids still want.
No way! you don’t say. It’s easy to have smash records when the competitors have issue with stocks because China messed up with covid.
Nintendo is doomed! They'll be going software only any day now!
@Guest88 the Switch has been the best selling system in US for the last consecutive 23 months (21 in Uk), so no?
It's going to sell 85 millions by the end of its 4th year in the market. People really need to realize this thing is extremely successful.
Waitwaitwait....The Switch is poised to Smash crazy records?
...Switch confirmed for Smash Ultimate, new bosses in the form of Master and Crazy Records confirmed.
@Bl4ckb100d In most ways... except build quality... kinda sad, but as much as I love my Switch, I expect much greater things out of the Nintendo’s next gen iteration.
@Tyranexx Can’t lie, playing as the Switch console would be pretty rad.
(Heck, there could be a whole separate game with just console characters. How delightfully horrid.)
Nintendo it's doomed
I really hope Nintendo keeps selling a lot of the Nintendo Switch. The more Nintendo sells, the more devs will make games for Nintendo Switch. Devs would make more new games and cart over more games because the player base for Switch will be huge and they can reach more people.
Also, I think Microsoft made a big mistake with their Game Pass. I mean, I have friends that are just signing up for game pass for PC, rather than buying games or the new Xbox Series X/S. I also, do not see the point in buying Microsoft's console right now because some of the new games are playable on my Xbox One. There's barely any incentive to buy one yet unless you want better graphics and shorter load times but then it's $500 for the Series X. I'd rather wait until more games or exclusives come out for Xbox Series X.
@Guest88
That isn’t why it’s selling. Much more to it than that.
@Xylnox
“ Also, I think Microsoft made a big mistake with their Game Pass. I mean, I have friends that are just signing up for game pass for PC, rather than buying games or the new Xbox Series X/S”
Microsoft don’t care whether it’s on PC or Xbox, they just want people signed up to Game Pass.
Sony and Microsoft should fear the Switch newcomers.
Not those who just want a platform for Christmas, but those who "come for the" system and "stay for the" good content we have.
@Ks123 For sure, which is pretty crazy when you compare how good the existing sales numbers for major Switch games versus earlier Nintendo consoles (the Wii line being the exception).
@Xylnox they ay have made a mistake for making a piece of hardware to be the market leader, but Microsoft has given up on chasing that: they want to be the video game Netflix, and are doing well at that.
@thiswaynow
Clamshell like DS is a far superior form factor.
Do away with dock, stick an HDMI port on the back and have a toggle between performance (for TV output) and conservative (handheld battery) mode.
@jamesthemagi I prefer a large single screen to the two smaller screens arrangement. I guess folding screen tech might change that in the future by doing away with the separation of the screens on a clamshell. That might be interesting.
Anyone not surprised by this event hasn't come out of their cave yet. Now we just have to wait for Switch 2 and see those figures go out the window.
@thiswaynow
I too prefer 1 screen; just on top and controllers on the botton like the GBA SP but landscape, not portrait
In regards of 1 screen taking up top and bottom portion look at Samsung Galazy Z Flip or the Fold
The average consumer is not a hardcore gamer at all. They don't know what teraflops are. They don't know what ray tracing is. Hell, even most self proclaimed hardcore gamers don't.
They see this:
PS5 or XboxX are around 500 dollars and that's just for the console and one controller. Both systems have the small limited library of games that comes with a new system - albeit with the backwards compatibility for a lot of older games.
They they see that, for that same price, they can buy the Switch, 2 full priced new games, and an additional controller. Or just the Switch and 3 games. That's at full price for all of it, not factoring in deals.
Realistically, for the holiday season, you could get a Switch and 3-6 gams for just the price of the PS5 or XboxX console. Now tack on the cost of 2 or 3 PS5 or XboxX games, and suddenly you're buying a Switch and a small library of games and another controller.
And while the PS5 and XboxX are chained to your television, the Switch is a hybrid that you can play anywhere or on the TV.
I'm sure there's a lot of people who would read this comment and role their eyes. But those people are the hardcore types and let's face it WE don't make up the majority of people who make up the majority of holiday sales.
@Guest88,
Yes that must be it, China have not made enough next generation consoles , nothing to do with the fact the console has been selling well since launch, despite all the naysayers stating sales are about to fall off a cliff as it passes each and every sales milestone, and the fact it does not compete directly with either of the next generation consoles, or the previous ones for that matter.
@Heavyarms55,
Thank you, at last somebody looking outside of the core internet posting minorities viewpoint, you will never convince the naysayers on here though, the console is still doomed when Sony and Microsoft manage to fill stores with stock.
@Parmandur,
Awesome sales ratio on Switch, and if you factor in the number of consoles sold the Switch has a much higher ratio than the Wii most titles.
@BlubberWhale I'd play a game centered around brawling consoles! Wonder how many Sega vs. Nintendo matchups will surface.... 🤔
@Parmandur True that.
@electrolite77 You're right, Microsoft wants Game Pass subs. I just wonder how much money Microsoft gets if I bought one new Xbox game every month vs paying $10/mon for Game Pass. The only problem I see with Game Pass, is if they decided to do away with it or it tanked in the future, then the only games you would have, would be the ones you bought. Also, Microsoft isn't really making money off of Game Pass yet and I've seen an article where they said all of this and said the longer Game Pass stays alive, then the more Microsoft will get.

GREAT NEWS....so where's Metroid Prime 4 Ninty? No excuses this time.
@purpleibby 2023 i bet
Nice. But from what I’ve seen from Sony, Ninty has some stiff competition from the PS5. Well, they’ll have competition if Sony can actually sell more than 2 PS5s.
@Heavyarms55 the average consumer can't find either xbox or ps5.... Nintendo is a familiar name, so why not buy that, and $200 less, plus in some cases comes with a free game. This year turned out to be the perfect storm for Nintendo....
@TheFullAndy Yep I think they've found their iPhone/Macbook. I think Nintendo thinks the same. It may not have the grunt of a desktop but it has convenience in spades. I see Switch as being an OS they will expand upon with new hardware down the line.
@Xylnox
Game Pass is a long term play. They’re willing to throw money at it now to hook people in knowing eventually with all the Studio purchases they’ll generate enough of their own software to make it attractive even without third parties.
In terms of revenue, with GP and the Streaming offer they’re aiming well beyond the Console market and trying to get a toe in almost every segment on this graphic.
https://images.app.goo.gl/piJtTvjtdp1WVBUs7
They’re looking to be in as many segments as possible rather than throwing resource at dominating one segment that is only 28% of the total. If it works, it could be very profitable.
@electrolite77 Thank you for your response. I have been focusing on consoles and I didn't even think about all of the gaming platforms. After looking at that graph, I was amazed at how big the mobile gaming market is. Even though I don't play games on my phone anymore, it makes sense with Microsoft looking at the whole pie and not just a slice. Cool.
@rockodoodle From what I've been hearing there's problems with scalpers across the board. I don't have the answer, I just know something needs to be done about it.
It makes sense for companies to oppose scalpers too. Because if people have to pay marked up prices for their consoles, that discourages sales of games and accessories for them.
Even I used to think that, from the company's point of view "a sale is a sale, to a kid who saved all year or to a scalper" but that's not actually the case.
@Heavyarms55 there has to be a solution to this nonsense.
@rockodoodle I think the most potentially effective solution would be some kind of law. It's like price gouging. But since game consoles are luxury items it's unlikely such a law would ever happen.
And retailers don't care because game consoles are one product out of hundreds or thousands of things they sell.
@Xylnox
You’re very welcome. I was exactly the same in terms of Console focussed and not realising how much of the market is on Mobile. A Friend sent that report to me a few months back and it was only then that the penny dropped as to what MS were doing. Interesting times, but great for us as consumers with three big players competing in the Console market but also following different strategies
@Tyranexx lol, Dreamcast vs GameCube, except I like to imagine they are now besties in the afterlife... 😛
@BlubberWhale Nothing wrong with a good, friendly brawl between rivals/friends!
@Tyranexx True!
