With the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X, it was always going to be tricky for the Nintendo Switch to hold onto the top spot in the UK this month – but, given that the console has only been ousted from that lofty position twice in the past two years, there was a feeling that perhaps the Switch could pull it off.
Sadly, that wasn't the case; during November, Sony's PS5 was king – but that doesn't mean Nintendo has anything to be glum about – quite the opposite, in fact.
During the past month, a staggering 900,000 games consoles were sold in the United Kingdom (thanks, GamesIndustry.biz), making it the eight-biggest month for console sales (not including handhelds) and the second biggest for console revenue (trailing December 2013, when demand for the PS4 and Xbox One was sky-high).
With PS5 coming out on top, Switch was pushed into second place in the UK hardware charts for only the third time in the past 24 months, but Switch hardware sales nonetheless jumped a massive 96% over the previous four weeks, thanks in no small part to Black Friday and the continued demand for Nintendo's hybrid console. So far this year, Switch hardware sales in the UK are up an impressive 63.1% year-on-year.
It's equally good news when it comes to games, with Switch software accounting for almost 35% of the 2.38 million games sold during the four-week period ending on November 28th. Nintendo was the most successful publisher during November as well, with titles like Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Super Mario 3D All-Stars and the evergreen Mario Kart 8 Deluxe helping it to beat Ubisoft to first place.
So, while it's a shame that the Switch wasn't the UK's best-selling console in November, it's hardly bad news – and, given the shortages of both the PS5 and Series X, we'd imagine normal service will be resumed pretty quickly.

'Normal service'
Ouch.
Really surprised Xbox Series X didn't take 2nd place though. Considering their shortages too. Perhaps the Xbox consoles were divided into two groups (series S and X), while PS5 was still bulked into one? Are the switch consoles (lite and regular) bulked into one?
Tip of the hat to Sony. Issues with scalpers aside, the console, controller and launch line-up all look very good. Looking forward to getting one at some point next year. In the meantime, still loving Super Mario 3D All-Stars, my personal choice for game of the year.
Great month for Sony and Nintendo and can see it getting better in December. Can't wait to get my hands on the PS5 next year to go along with my Switch!
Microsoft and Xbox has been third in the UK for a good while now and with no compelling exclusive titles on the immediate horizon I don't see that changing anytime soon. Maybe Gamepass will work out for them, maybe not.
I will still pick up a Series X eventually but no rush.
I want a PS5 but I don't like Sony that much because my brothers a PlayStation player and says things like "No one even owns or plays a switch it's for babies" and I don't really participate in console wars but whenever something good or bad comes up about switch sales I tell him about it
@Friendly I think you’re likely right about how Xbox C and S consoles were likely split as they are 2 different consoles whereas the PS5 disc edition and digital edition are essentially the same thing just one doesn’t have any way to use discs. And Switch and Switch Lite are again the same system, just one can’t dock.
@JohnnyC That or age of Calamity for me.
Although I still advent started Galaxy so that may edge it!
Surprised Xbox was lower they must be really struggling in terms of production. Still undecided on which next gen to go for. Xbox is a better value proposition with gamepass(I missed last gen apart from Switch so its pretty stacked with games I havent played). But the PS5 has better games at the moment although that may change with the Bethesda Acquisition.
does the new Xbox have backwards compatibility I heard the PS5 has it but I don't know if Xbox does this will likely determine which one I get
@SMUGSLOTH69 Yes they has
Xbox is doing terrible. 100k to 500k. Shortages or not they have lost again. Badly.
I wonder how many of those PS5s have been resold?
On a serious note, kudos to Sony. While I'm not on board with the PS5's design and will likely wait for a slim version before buying, everything else about the new system has intrigued me.
@SMUGSLOTH69 No idea how old your brother is, but those types of comments are a bit juvenile. I daresay Switch sales show that "Nobody" is quite a large crowd. Plenty of people who game on PC or other consoles own a Switch too. That attitude isn't on Sony, but your brother.
@jarvismp They're in for Gamepass and Gamepass only. Also, they will have game sales across multiple platforms (PC, phone, Xbox). I'm interested to see how they'll fare in three years, when their big exclusives will be released, including Bethesda's games.
@Tyranexx the weird thing is he's younger than me he's 11or 12 and he only had a PS4 for like 1 year before he broke it and the only things he even played were sims 4,2K,and FORTNITE and currently he doesn't even own a console or start thinking of buying a new one but brings things like this up all the time. And yes I'm aware of people who have multiple consoles in 2011 and 12 I had a Wii,PS3,and a 360 also I'm planning on getting a PS5 or Xbox series X
@jarvismp
Where did you get those figures from? When 900k consoles were sold 500k of them for one console brand would be a great result.
@Guest88 oh ok then I guess I'll have to judge by exclusives and graphics then I guess and wow this is a hard decision because they're both pretty pricy and cool but this has to last at least 4 years
@elpardo1984 I tend to choose the format which has the games I want to play. As well as Nintendo I like Spiderman, Uncharted, God of War and Street Fighter (and a lot of their other stuff) so Sony got my cash last-gen. Doesn't look to be different this gen based on what's been released and teased. God of War Ragnarok is as much of a system-seller as Breath of the Wild 2 based on their predecessors. Agreed that Game Pass is great value. If Sony can catch up with PSNow there's no reason they can't own the next gen.
I know you guys usually get ragged on for the negativity in your headlines so... well done with this one.
@JohnnyC
Sony is going to own the next gen regardless.
@SMUGSLOTH69
"does the new Xbox have backwards compatibility?"
It does, but only certain Xbox games, Not All Xbox games from from XBOX Classic and XBOX 360. You cannot even play niche or kid Xbox classic / 360 games on Xbox Series X because Microsoft don't want casual / niche games to be revived on next gen consoles.
I will consider Xbox 360 as the Final worthy Xbox machine (only interested with DDR Universe series, Zoo Tycoon and some Kinect games) as i saw Nothing worthy from Xbox One (their games library was nearly 99% identical same with PS4 version, worthless in my eyes) nor even from Xbox Series machines (No interesting 1st party Xbox series games for casual audiences / kids)
"No one even owns or plays a switch it's for babies"
So your brother said that?
I can say "Yes, i have Nintendo Switch with a lot of 'babies games', but the babies games that can kick people's butt."
I want to add "Yes, i am a baby and so what? "
@Anti-Matter I get you but don't care that much on that last one because when I had an XBOX me and my brother only bought it for Minecraft but it is kinda sad Xbox doesn't have many casual/kid games
@Anti-Matter I wish there was a PlayStation or XBOX with backwards compatibility with all it's consoles I'd Pay 500-600$ dollars for it
@TheFullAndy Looks like it. Who'd have thought that producing a good number of high-quality games with solid third-party support would lead to success?
Funny how Switch hardware sales in the UK haven't been much of a discussion on this site until now.
@JohnnyC Yeah thats what I'm thinking. PS has a lot more exclusives that are my sort of game, and the dual sense is appealing particularly after seeing(well feeling!) how Nintendo have used haptics on the Switch.
@SMUGSLOTH69 Your brother is an immature idiot. Console wars are the dumbest thing ever. All consoles are good and all consoles have great exclusive games and different ways to play.
@Friendly I think it's do with ports/remasters being valued higher than backwards compatibility and Halo Infinite's delay meaning Xbox didn't have a big title for the holidays. Playing your old games via backwards compatibility at faster loading times, higher framerates and/or resolution is the primary reason to own a Series X|S for the foreseeable future.
@JohnnyC
Yeah funny that!
@jarvismp Xbox has sold every single Series X and Series S console they've made. Demand for them is far in excess of supply. That's called doing very well by adults.
@Lionyone I know right but I think he only does it because I love my switch to death and sometimes even say things like "It's the best thing ever made" or "I value it over my own life"
@TheFullAndy What does that even mean?
@Anti-Matter these look awesome wish I knew about them when I had a 360 might buy one again one day
@SMUGSLOTH69 I value your life much more than my Switch. And I love my Switch. Love yourself honey, you're precious and you matter and you should own your sass and style.
@Lionyone
To which of my comments do you refer?
@TheFullAndy Comment #19
@Grumblevolcano ...And third party new games if you don't love locking your library to Sony's whims and whatever is best for profitability at any moment. Even if it runs a few frames lower at times.
@Friendly Hard to sell what you don't have. Similar to PS'5's launch completely bombing in Japan because they allocated relatively few there. They sold out what they allocated, so we don't know how high demand would have sold. I'm assuming MS allocated the majority of inventory in the US, not the UK, which traditionally is a Sony monopoly, and Switch is an unusual success for Nintendo there. Sony probably allocated a lion's share in the UK since it's such a strong region for them. Since neither company really is releasing numbers, it's all speculation.
I don't think this site usually shows US numbers. XB is quite a bit more popular here than in the UK, and the internet can really skew that view....especially when hanging out on a British site.
@Lionyone It's not that I don't love myself it's just my switch has done so much for me I can't even count how many times I was stuck at home or my dad or moms workplace or just out of the house and it cured my boredom but you're right I should love myself more than my switch also thank you and have a nice day god bless
@Lionyone
The PS5 will be the lead console for the next generation in sales and consumer interest.
Nintendo will be there or therabouts with Xbox in third.
@TheFullAndy If that happens why does that matter? What difference does it make to anything?
@Lionyone
I didn't say it mattered I was simply stating what I think will happen. I put no other spin on it.
Why are you trying to turn it into something more?
@SMUGSLOTH69 I don't believe in God but I believe in good days! Thank you, I will!
@Lionyone cool hope you and your friends and family have an awesome day
@TheFullAndy You use hyperbole to describe Sony that turns out to be empty. I don't see the point of console wars. It's macho **** waving. Because I love consoles I'm getting both PS5 and XSX because both offer very different things.
Is there even a "console war" (hate that term) anymore? Sony's PS5 is the ultimate at home machine for adult oriented exclusives, Nintendo is doing their own thing with the Switch and the unique experience it provides, and Microsoft seems to be selling Game Pass subscriptions, not Xbox consoles. In fact, I wouldn't be shocked at all if within 2-3 years the Xbox Game Pass service is on BOTH the PS5 and Switch/Switch Pro. All three seem to be doing their own thing these days.
@Lionyone
Look at my first comment in this article. I always own all the consoles of a generation at some point. Right now Series X doesn't appeal due to lack of compelling exclusives
It is not hyperbole to say Sony "owned" a generation it is just an alternative description and one that I stand by. Sony to all intents and purposes will own this gen like it owned last gen. It is just another way of saying being the most successful. Nothing to fret about.
Seems to me you like to misread others comments so you can then try and start an argument so it is a bit hypocritical of you.
@NGNYS
Seek help.
I'm a Nintendo Switch only gamer and have zero interest in either the PS5 or Xbox One X, but competition and choice are great things. Play whatever machine(s) makes you happy.
@TheFullAndy You're encouraging console wars with macho "owned" talk. Ridiculous to make such an early prediction right now too. The situation could reverse entirely within a year as xbox exclusives come out. Not that it would make any difference to anything either. What matters is all consoles have great games and are all growing the games industry which benefits us all. Particularly in a pandemic we should emphasise our connections and shared values and value each other not promote patriarchal competitions that isolate people into strange silos. I love Sony, I love Xbox, I love Nintendo. They're all winners and that makes us all winners also.
@JohnnyC Eh? I'll give you that the Dualshock 5 is looking to be possibly the best controller ever, and the console itself seems nice, but I'd say the launch lineup is rather lacking... currently the system doesn't even have any true exclusives, and it won't until Astro's Playroom, right?
Not that I'm saying you're wrong to like it or anything, I'm more curious to see someone saying they like the launch lineup.
@Lionyone
Good for you, ever thought of a career in motivational speches?
Currently the Series X does not have the great new exclusive games to justify its purchase, and for me years old exclusives do not count, so I am holding off on buying one. Hopefully it won't be too long and the games aren't held back too much by also having to be on the weaker Series S, that console's existence being a misstep in my opinion by Microsoft.
I love gaming, but the console makers have to give me the games I want to make me want to purchase their system. Simple.
@link3710
Astro's Playroom is launched and installed already in every PS5.
Nintendoomed! It's over! Bankruptcy next month!
PS5 had an insane launch, likely near or above 300,000 units sold in its first week, which is nearly double what the Xbox Series X|S sold during its launch week. PlayStation platforms now account for 4 out of the 5 biggest hardware launches in UK history. Even the comically overpriced PS3 had a bigger launch than any Nintendo or Microsoft platform.
Switch still sold extremely well last month in the UK, just not quite enough to match the biggest new hardware launch in the country's history.
@link3710 Lots of people (myself included) are keen on Miles Morales which looks great. Demon's Souls, although a remake and admittedly not for me, has got some of the best reviews of the year. The Sackboy platformer has also reviewed well, as has Astro's Playroom. That's 4 above-average games on launch day designed primarily for the ps5, with scaled-down versions of 2 of them also available on the PS4. Even the Switch only launched with one good game and that was known to be a repurposed Wii U game, which ran pretty much identically on its predecessor. Personally I'm just after Astro and Spidey at the moment, but also keen on future releases in the pipeline. In isolation it's Sony's best launch, and certainly better than most console launches. Add in the fact that if you have plus you get most of the best PS4 games for free at launch, there's a lot to be happy about on day 1.
Here's the untold story if you want censorship go Sony that's what you also perpetuate by going sony. They will be your moral police and have no problem doing so for you.
Not surprised, and that is a $500/400 purchase. So paying a premium over a Switch.
Tons of gamers were not going to play at 600p and miss most big AAA releases by sticking with just a Switch (You cant find a $700 3080 or $650 6800Xt for PC either)
Switch is a good handheld, you still need something for home.
I ended up with Series S, it is a little disappointing, mainly poor storage, and an external SSD is merely 4 seconds slower and 1/3 the price of the official expansion. So proprietary storage was a massive mistake for both consoles. However some developers seem to have realised they can try and use the better processor for more A.Is rather than more pixels. So I am looking forward to the few developers that leverage the power in better ways than just typical glitz.
Uh oh, flagging sales! Nintendo Switch Pro refresh confirmed. Finally.
@JohnnyC Ah okay. I'm curious, I've been playing Miles Morales on Ps4 and it doesn't seem scaled down at all from the footage I saw. Are there any real differences other than loading times?
@TheFullAndy Oops, I meant Ratchet and Clank.
@link3710 I wouldn't know from experience to be honest. From what I understand from online comparisons the ps5 has better draw distance and ray tracing, maybe a few other bells and whistles. I may bite the bullet and get it on ps4, trying to wait for next year and buy it with a Ps5 though. Spidey 1 looked amazing on my PS4 pro though, as do all of Sony's other first-party titles, so I imagine this looks great too.
Switch isn't slowing down for next gen at all! Whoa. Brilliant news!
Got access to both a Series X and a ps5.
Both are pretty flashy graphics wise, though X box is insanely fast to start timed it at like 6 seconds and you can resume last game. Ps5 is slower and also its huge, (both are big but damn its BIG) makes more noise not ps4 level but enough. Xbox presently has no big unique new games so ps5 beats it there easily.
@Heavyarms55 Psh. Everyone's known Nintendo should go third-party for years.
@SMUGSLOTH69 To each their own. If your brother prefers to play on a PS console, that's fine. But he has as much right to criticize the systems and games that others choose to play as I do: none. I'm not other people. I don't know their preferences. Console wars, outside of friendly banter, only breed resentment and serve no purpose. Every way to play games has its positives and negatives.
Just play what you like. Don't let the comments of others get you down. Though I do hope you value your life more than that of a machine.
@Agramonte
Its launch. Every system sells at launch (even Wii U). I wouldn't draw any conclusions from that.
Having said that, of course theres people who want higher graphics experiences on a TV. Obviously. Just because Switch is breaking all kinds of records and is going to push nearly 30 million units this fiscal year and likely challenge the all time 150 million record of the PS2/DS, doesnt mean there arent still hundreds of millions of people who want a more traditional console also.
Even I bought a PS5, and I hadn't touched my PS4 in years.
For the record though, there's enough high quality Switch ports to not worry about the games which are too demanding for a hybrid system. Right now Sniper Elite 4 is that game for me. Full 1080p docked, 720p handheld, rock solid performance, gyro aiming and HD Rumble for your heartbeat when exhaling... I cant imagine playing this game any other way, be it TV or handheld. This game perfectly captures what Switch is all about.
@link3710
I have a PS5 and Spiderman.
It looks practically identical to the PS4 version, unless you're doing a side by side Digital Foundry comparison counting pixels. Even the 4k mode is still 30fps. Which dont get me wrong, it's fine for me. But it's basically just the PS4 version running at slightly higher specifications, with a 30fps mode that adds 1080p reflections.
I love the system, but graphics arent why. It feels like you're playing PS4 games still. Maybe because I have an RTX 2080 ti GPU with i9 9900k CPU at 13.4 TF and 10 TB of SSD space already, it just doesnt impress as much. Or maybe it's due to law of diminishing returns.
But basically, you're not gonna notice any significant difference in visuals for PS5 games. The appeal is finally adding an SSD, a snappy OS, and having CEC HDMI integration that actually works well like Switch. Makes it more convenient to play.
@TheFullAndy in terms of next gen then it's just out of the ps5 and series S/X which of course we all know sony will win by a mile, but the switch is in the ps4/xbox one generation and aren't directly competing with the new consoles
@SMUGSLOTH69 does your brother play a lot of fortnite by any chance? 80% of kid gamers these days only talk about fortnite whikst the other 20% talk about nintendo and let's just say that 20% is the better crowd to be in.
But he's only 11/12 so when he grows up I'm sure he will be more open minded
@UltimateOtaku91
Switch will continue on its own merry way and continue to be a success.
I think Xbox will do better this gen but still be miles behind PS5. Microsoft really needs to get its act together with the exclusive games as well.
Sony have started this gen like a house on fire launching with 4 quality first party titles and more on the horizon soon like Ratchet & Clank.
@GrailUK
Of course not.
Switch isn't smashing records because it can offer the same experience as other consoles, it's smashing records precisely because it offers an alternative experience. And that doesn't change just because the HD twins got their generational hardware revamp.
People buy Switch because it offers an experience you simply cannot find anywhere else, no matter how many teraflops are involved. They buy for the exclusive games (next year is already slated for Super Mario 3D World, Monster Hunter Rise, Monster Hunter Stories 2, Shin Megami Tensei V, No More Heroes 3, Bayonetta 3, Bravely Default 2, Zelda BotW 2, etc) and the exclusive experience of multiplatform games optimized for the system (Sniper Elite 4 with gyro and HD Rumble, Doom Eternal with gyro, Immortals Fenyx Rising with gyro, Neo The World Ends With You, the new Resident Evil built for Switch first and foremost, etc). Even games available elsewhere dont provide the same experience. They're tethered to a TV. They don't offer local co-op anywhere, they don't offer gyro and instead force a 20 year old dated control scheme that feels about as good as using an Atari 2600 joystick...
That's not to say other systems are bad. They offer something different than Switch, something that still has value, it's just a different kind of value. But I wont use my PS5 for ANYTHING other than select permanently exclusive titles that aren't on Steam and don't require aiming. Because playing games that require aiming, without gyro, aren't even worth the hard drive space they occupy. And Steam is only for games that don't come to Switch or can't achieve satisfactory performance (like Outer Worlds).
There's a reason Switch is outpacing the Wii and PS4, even despite the endless attacks against it for not offering the latest cutting edge graphics.
@Tyranexx I do I just care about my switch more than basically anything tbh that's probally because outside of Anime,Sleeping,My Family, and School work I don't have much else in my life
Launch sales rarely determines overall success anyways, unless it is really low like the Wii U's launch.
NDS sold ~87,000 units during its UK launch. It ended up selling 12+ million units lifetime in the UK, making it the best-selling platform ever in the country by a wide margin (PS2 is #2 at 10 million units sold).
PS4's launch sales were nearly 3X higher than the NDS's launch sales in the UK, but its lifetime sales will end up being 3.5 to 4.0 million units lower.
@UltimateOtaku91 I mean yeah and the funny thing that I haven't mentioned in these comments is that for about a month(before he broke it)he had a SWITCH and he had over 300 hours of gameplay in FORTNITE alone and he only had it for a month or a month and a half It's crazy I only played the game when a family member or classmate was on but he played that game all the time(Except for when he was playing Minecraft)
Microsoft are lagging behind because they are not offering anything unique and what they do offer you can get on other devices. You don't need their consoles.
At least not for 2 years.
If were talking about launch release sales comparisons then psx, xbox are pretty poor sales figures if you compare to the launch date of March 2017 which is 1.5mil units. So those talking how big it was for Nov. 2020 are really making a stretch to say how big the sales are when if you compare launch dates psx, xbox during that time was horrible. So whom is really not looking at the real figure to compare launch date sales now...
https://www.statista.com/statistics/687059/nintendo-switch-unit-sales-worldwide/#:~:text=Since%20its%20launch%20on%20March,console%20giants%2C%20Xbox%20and%20PlayStation.
@JohnnyC To be clear Johnny, the Xbox figures combine S and X as one
@JaxonH For sure... One selling does not mean the other does not. When the 3DS was selling boat loads so were home consoles and Graphic cards. Nothing has changed.
Sure, if you happy with Sniper Elite 4. But I did not care about SE4 on PC back in 2017. I wanted to play ZBOTW. Just like I do not care about SE4 on Switch in 2020... I want to play Cyberpunk, Yakuza, Dirt 5, F1, Valhalla, Miles Morales.
Same way I do not want to pick between KENA or Bravely Default 2 in early 2021... I want both. I played MH: World... now I want to play MH: Rise. So I have hardware that covers any of those options.
If I have time (and extra $60) to play I want to play what I am most exited about... for most of 2020, that has not been on Switch.
@westman98 @SwitchForce Discussing Launch era sales is nearly pointless anyways. That's more a reflection of how much supply was put on the market than the demand there actually is for the system. Until we get through the initial burst of demand and reach an equilibrium, it's always misleading.
...though if a system doesn't sell out at launch that's either a sign of a ridiculously high initial supply or a serious problem. We'll see how well PS5 and XBSX are doing soon, but at least neither is doing poorly off the bat.
@SwitchForce ps5 was the biggest selling launch console ever and sold more than the ps4's 2.1 million....
The ps5 sold 255.000 in the UK alone within 24 hours compared to the switch's 80.000
@SwitchForce
Your comment is absolute gibberish.
I'm sure everyone is doing well. Switch will be top selling hardware again soon I'm sure (especially in Japan.) If the Switch would have outsold PS5, I think we all would agree the industry had made some kind of misstep. But even still, the numbers sounds pretty close to be bloody impressive nevertheless!
@SMUGSLOTH69 It's fine to have a prized possession. I was just a bit concerned about how one of your earlier comments was phrased. I'm glad that you listed other things that are very important to you.
@SwitchForce March release is still bonkers to me! I do reckon they could only do it because the Wii U was such a flop.
@Tyranexx I know probably should've phrased that better.What's your favorite possession
@TheFullAndy That's your choice to wait. Lack of big name exclusives didn't stop either of the new consoles selling out of stock. We're in the odd situation where neither console has launched with a must have game. Demon's Souls is nice but hasn't sold well. Astro's Playroom is technically impressive but nobody's buying the console solely in order to play it.
I'm waiting on buying the consoles for different reasons. First, I like game themed console shells and all the new consoles have boring shells. Second, all the consoles have new product problems and bugs and I'm happy to wait for those to be fixed. Third, there doesn't exist yet a TV that can show off the consoles in all their graphical and aural splendour. Even the mighty LG CX that is almost perfect doesn't show blacks properly when VRR is used which is bad for back compact games. The TV market has been slow and half hearted to adapt to the new consoles and the pandemic probably made that worse. But perfect TVs will probably be out in Spring or Summer, giving us a choice of incredible sets that are better value. Plenty to look forward to!
@Lionyone
See I already have the perfect TV, my Panasonic Plasma! All the games for all the consoles look spectacular on it and that will hold true with next gen.
Such a pity the market moved away from plasma and toward the much inferior LCD/LED technology. Damn shame.
@JohnnyC Miles Morales should have been a DLC.
@SwitchForce
You’re quoting Worldwide Sales. The article is just U.K. sales.
@TheFullAndy I've heard great things about plasma but never seen it. I'm glad it fully meets your present needs. I think as incomes declined following 2008 people opted for LCD TVs in numbers that made plasma TV production economically unviable for TV manufacturers. Still innovation continues and I'm excited at what happens next in TVs. I think the next big trend in TVs, in a couple of years, will be 8K short throw laser projectors.
@Agramonte
To each their own. But Sniper Elite 4 is easily one of the best stealth games I've ever played, and with gyro and the HD rumble its absolutely stellar on Switch. It's all I've been playing lately. Well, that and Pikmin 3, Hyrule Warriors, and waiting on Doom Eternal and Immortals.
Of course, I'll be playing Cyberpunk on Steam for sure, but aside from that, and a couple hours of Demons Souls, it's been 99% Switch this year, and probably will be next year too. I never even finished Spiderman so Miles Morales is on the back burner until I get around to it. Great game though. But theres so many great Switch games it's hard to find time for anything else.
@Lionyone
I am waiting for the price to come down on OLED TVs and all the kinks to be worked out as OLED is probably the closest to Plasma with regards black levels and motion resolution in today's market. Hopefully a few years left in my plasma still as it truly is a fantastic TV.
As the new gen consoles go back in stock I'm sure the Switch will continue to lag not only in the UK, but worldwide. Is perfectly normal and honestly not news worthy. Next month, will there be another article about the 4th month in 2 years that Switch is not best selling console?
@Lionyone From what I hear it's a 10-15 hour campaign plus side quests. Not exactly adding Byleth to Smash.
@JaxonH STFU, Atari 2600 stick is bae.
series x has over a thousand backward compatibility games to start with, plus the graphics help all original xbox and most xbox 360 and even some xbox one games look better and perform much faster. Also they are exploring more backward compatibility games to add.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I'll wait until the kinks are worked out before I plunge into any next generation hardware.
@jamesthemagi supposedly, both Xbox and PS5 will have stock issues through April: until then, they'll be drip feeding the market.
@SMUGSLOTH69 Right now, in terms of material possessions, I'd also have to say my Switch! I've only had mine for about a year, and I'm STILL playing catch-up on all the games I want for it lol. A runner-up would be my Wii U thanks to its backwards compatibility with the Wii, some of its system exclusives, and the Virtual Console.
In terms of non-material possessions, I'd have to say all the positive influences in my life (family, friends, some co-workers, etc.) are the most important. Followed by animals.
@Tyranexx Awesome what would you say is your best SWITCH experience or moment
@SMUGSLOTH69 So far, I'd have to say some of the very beautiful and at times otherworldly views in Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition. The game is full of eye candy if appreciating environmental detail in a game is your thing.
@JaxonH dual stick is fine. You still have to use two stick with gyro. All gyro really adds is it locks vertical movement of the stick so you can rotate the controller for up and down.
@TheFullAndy Yeah OLED prices are still kind of crazy. I can see some people switching from LED TV to large tablets with Super Amoled 120 herz screens if OLED TVs don't get reasonable prices next year. Xcloud on such a tablet with good WiFi and speakers sounds a boss set up and yet is space saving. Either way, long may your plasma happily glow!
@JohnnyC That's still not a full game.
@Lionyone Subjective, but it's a hell of a lot more than £5 worth of dlc on most games. And according to the charts and reviews, the public and the critics seem happy with it, with many actually saying it's a better game than the first. That's enough for me.
@Trajan
You still use dual stick but only for wider, camera turning movements. Not for precision aiming. Gyro does a lot more than just lock vertical movement. It allows a more natural fine tuning of aim in any direction in a radius of half the screen width.
Its absolutely superior in objective tests and comes close to mouse.
The fact bullet magnetism and auto aim assist exists is proof enough dual sticks were never cut out for the job. While gyro eliminates any need for aim assist.
@Tyranexx It's weird I owned this on my Wii and even re-bought it on my 2DSXL but never played it so I'm probably gonna get this after I play Trials of Mana and the Atelier Ryza series
@SMUGSLOTH69 Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition is an excellent game IMO. I was blown away with how much I loved it. You're in for a treat!
@JohnnyC I'm glad you're happy with it, enjoy playing it on your PS5 for many years to come.
@Tyranexx oh I can't wait then I'll even finally be able to play 2 as afterwards
@Lionyone Haven't got the game or a Ps5 yet, but looking forward to both at some point next year. Thanks, will do. Still enjoying Spidey 1 on PS4 2 years after release.
@SMUGSLOTH69 I have XC2 but still need to play it. Too many other games to choose from!
@Tyranexx I wanted XC 2 when I first got my SWITCH and waited and thank god I did bc I was scared to play it until 1 got an upgraded SWITCH port but I'll feel pretty stupid if they're not connected bc that means I avoided XC 2 for no reason
@JohnnyC Excellent! I'm happy when people enjoy gaming. At its best gaming is incredibly wholesome.
@NEStalgia Most PS5/Series X|S purchasers will already have a PS4 or XB1 so the benefits of upgrading are:
PS4 -> PS5 - Exclusives, better resolution, better framerate, better loading times, DualSense gimmicks
PS4 -> Series X|S - Game Pass, better resolution, better framerate, better loading times
XB1 -> Series X|S - Better resolution, better framerate, better loading times
XB1 -> PS5 - Exclusives, better resolution, better framerate, better loading times, DualSense gimmicks
@SMUGSLOTH69 I've heard they are loosely connected, but as I haven't played XC2 yet, I couldn't tell you. I've just been told there is a connection in non spoiler-y terms.
@Grumblevolcano That list is a little confused:
PS4->PS5 - Exclusives, Dual Sense gimmicks, somewhat better resolution, somewhat better framerate.
PS4 Pro -> PS5 Exclusives, Dual Sense gimmicks.
PS4 -> XSXS - Game Pass, better resolution, better framerate, better loading times, access to 6th & 7th generation games.
XB1 -> Series X|S - Better resolution, better framerate, better loading times, access to your whole library minus Kinekt without exceptions and weird asterisks.
XB1 -> PS5 - Exclusives, better resolution, better framerate, Dual Sense gimmicks.
X1X -> PS5 Exclusives, dual sense gimmicks, and a decisive downgrade in all other aspects for more money....
Seriously though, vs. PS4 Pro, PS5 doesn't really enhance BC loading times. That SSD is only really useful if the game is built for it, otherwise it's a fairly average drive at best (and XSX's slower drive beats it handily for BC games.) For new games, it's definitely faster, but that was disappointing for BC. And sadly most PS4 games are resolution or framerate locked still, so only certain games get any meaningful enhancement over pro level. Nioh 2 for example that always ran at choppy framerates on Pro runs smooth 60 now, but it's kind of mute since it's getting a full free remaster in a few months.
@Tyranexx oh maybe it's like they go to an old location or briefly talk about an old character
@SMUGSLOTH69 @Tyranexx The games are technically connected, but the connection is only realized AFTER the game. I.E. there's no connection whatsoever between the locations or the characters in both games. There's a loose connection that you can correlate in your head after you see the full endings of both and connect some dots.
The two games take place in different "worlds" with entirely different people doing entirely different things in entirely different places. The epilogue post-game chapter of XC1 and the final chapter of XC2 have some plot twist/revelations that connect the two in a specific way. At that point you can in your mind connect the two stories through that crossover point.
Essentially they're two story worlds within one connected story universe. The events of each game are actually simultaneously occurring in two different places at the same time, and both very briefly intersect at their endgame moment. So while Shulk and company are on their adventure in one place, Rex and company are on their adventure in an entirely different place. At the end of each of their stories is a brief intersection of those separate events that makes clear how it's all part of a larger whole, and sort of...for lack of better words without spoilers, the events of a "third place" are in fact directly connected to the events of each.
But it's a connection that almost is appreciated more in a second playthrough where you see little nods to the connections you couldn't have seen the first time through. It's entirely possible to enjoy both games out of order without spoiling or losing anything, as the revealations of either will inform knowledge of the other, without directly giving away any story of the characters in either.
@NEStalgia Ok thx for clearing that up I'll be sure to remember when buying and choosing between 1 or 2 but after what you just told me I'm most likely getting 1 first
@NEStalgia Interesting. Not only is that giving me some ideas to ruminate on from what I experienced in the first game - though obviously I'll have to play XC2 for the overall picture to start clicking - but those connections might also answer some loose ends from the Future Connected epilogue that I was confused about.
Now I'm curious enough that I might play XC2 sooner. But this does address @SMUGSLOTH69 's concerns about playing them in order. I just decided to play them in chronological order since JRPG fans have been raving about the original for years. Doctored up rereleases that aren't scalped to death help.
(Actually, my first Xenoblade title was XCX, but as that's a sort of spin-off with less focus story, I doubt it applies to the main XC series. Still waiting for a sequel!)
@JaxonH the fine aiming with gyro doesn’t really matter much in console FPS though. They all have some degree of aim assist.
Gyro isn’t anywhere close to mouse.
@Tyranexx If you really want to play them in order it goes Xenosaga, then Xenogears, then XC1/2.
@Tyranexx In true Monolith fashion, you'll get some answers to questions from Future Connected.....and you'll end up with all new questions.... There's definitely moments at the end of XC2 that have a lot more impact after you've been thoroughly confused after Future Connected, but in such a way that you aren't "missing" things or spoiling things of the first if you play it first.
But yeah, after the "WTF did I just watch?" finale of XC1 there's definitely pieces at the end of XC2 that click together and start making some sense of it. And then raising plenty more questions. It's a nice treat in order, but not in a way that ruins things if you play out of order.
XCX officially was a spinoff that's unconnected, but I think they did say it was the same universe. When you put Future Connected in context, XCX may technically be connected, too, if you think about it.
@Tyranexx Since I'm getting more into the XC series I'd love an XCX SWITCH port I mean there's almost no more good games from Wii U that aren't on switch so once we get that wooly world and the Zelda remasters the Wii U port collection will finally be complete
@Trajan
That's the point. Aim assist is the game playing for you. It's not fun. Gyro doesnt need aim assist, and it's way more fun. To the point not using it feels like using d-pads where the game just snaps the aim for you. Super lame.
And it absolutely is close to mouse. It's not AS good, but it's close, and that's not just my opinion, that's from objective skill tests in shooting range PC apps.
@JaxonH not really. Different aim assists have different curves. MW2019 is done well.
It’s not close to a mouse at all because you don’t have a physical zero and gyro moves in a 360.
Gyro is great for VR though.
@Trajan I was referring strictly about the Xenoblade series, but I would like to get around to Xenogears and Xenosaga at some point.
@SMUGSLOTH69 Yep! Some complain about the Switch getting a ton of Wii U ports, but I'm fine with it; a lot of people didn't own a Wii U, and many decent games were passed over thanks to that. I think giving them a new lease on life is great! (And it gives me time to catch up lol)
@NEStalgia Yeah, it took me a bit to process XC's finale. "WTF did I just watch?" is an apt description. XD The game was totally worth it! I definitely don't expect to have EVERYTHING answered however.
@Tyranexx I mean I know Wii U owners felt betrayed but after the Wii U sold so poorly did they really think those exclusives would never leave that console plus I bet they're at least a little bit happy bc now they don't have to boot up their old Wii U's to play their favorite games
@SMUGSLOTH69 Probably depends on who you ask. I bought most of the Wii U games I wanted and played them there, so outside of a rerelease or two it frees up my schedule for other games. Like I mentioned, I don't mind that so many games are making the Switch.
@Tyranexx what's your favorite Wii U game and is it on SWITCH
@SMUGSLOTH69 ...That's a hard question for me to answer lol. I really love both The Wind Waker HD (first time playing it) and Twilight Princess HD, but I don't think those should count since they originated on other systems. In terms of games specifically for the Wii U....I'd have to say it's a toss-up between Super Mario 3D World (coming to Switch next month), Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (already moved over), and the aforementioned Xenoblade Chronicles X.
@Tyranexx well you're in luck I think Nintendo is porting these two in a 3-pack collection in 2021 with skyward sword I think I'm just predicting bc of the anniversary
@SMUGSLOTH69 They very well could be! But as with all rumors, I take what I hear with a pile of salt until Nintendo announces their plans.
@Tyranexx I try to as well but after what they did with Mario's 35th it showed me that anything is possible
@SMUGSLOTH69 They're certainly capable of a lot!
@Tyranexx I know right but do you think they'll make it limited again bc that would suck
@SMUGSLOTH69 I hope they don't, but it's definitely not impossible. I usually don't pick up games at launch and tend to get them several months to years later depending. I actually do not own Super Mario 3D All-Stars yet because I'm waiting to see if they will be releasing the games in the collection separately.
@Tyranexx well I would wait bc Super Mario 64 is decent and I hate(Ok I don't hate it just strongly dislike and that's bc there are parts where I wanted to chuck my switch out the window) Sunshine but Galaxy that right there is one of my favorites and I haven't even finished it yet
@SMUGSLOTH69 Part of why I'm waiting is because I already have played/own Super Mario 64 (Wii U Virtual Console) and Super Mario Galaxy (Wii). While I enjoy both games, I don't double-dip on games easily. Need to make sure it's worth my while lol.
@Tyranexx I mean touch screen is a little inconvenient but other than that Super Mario Galaxy on the go is awesome
@SMUGSLOTH69 Oh, I'm sure it is! Ik not against getting the collection - and still might - I just haven't dropped cash on it yet lol.
@Tyranexx oh well if you truly don't want double-dip even with portability as a factor then you don't have to but this collection is limited but my theory is that Nintendo will just have a different way of selling the games like individually y'know bc there's no way they made these ports just to take them away
@SMUGSLOTH69 Part of why I'm holding out is to see if they'll announce if they'll sell the games individually. I'll probably give it until late February/early March before I bite. XD
@Tyranexx they probably will
