Re: New Hack Offers A Full Game Library On Your NES Classic Edition

Mbrogz3000

If there is so much value still remaining in the legacy game library, why can't Nintendo force the big rom distribution sites to remove their content from distribution? Basic google searches allow you find the sites within 2 minutes and you can download the complete library in about 5 minutes. And Wii and GameCube and other systems as well. Not that I'm against it ( I am not paying $100 for a loose Chronotrigger cart, I am not paying $70 for Xenoblade Chronicles for the Wii, I like everyone much prefer the Japanese Castlevania 3 soundtrack over the US version, etc.) but its so easy now and it's been that way for years to get the roms.

Re: Nintendo Will Replace Your Dead Switch Battery, At A Cost

Mbrogz3000

Guys - come on, this is like a gamespot quality article on a slow news day.

Anyway this isn't a really big deal. Reputable 3rd party vendors will sell the battery for $15 to $20....the scam Chinese vendors will sell them for $5 at risk of immolating. There will be a procedure to replace the battery, even if it involve using a plastic spudger tool or a security torx.

Re: Double Dragon IV Packs an 8-Bit Punch But Isn't Confirmed for Switch, Yet

Mbrogz3000

I'll get this for PC( I finally built a new one) for $7.50 tops during a steam sale... definitely not worth $15 or $20 though.

Looks like the dev tried to self impose color palette combination limits as well...most devs just allow themselves full access to millions of colors when making an intentional 'retro' title. When I play a new 'retro' game....I prefer for it to have some level of resource limit and constraint just like the old consoles.

Re: Feature: Xenoblade Chronicles X - One Year Later

Mbrogz3000

@Sapphire - you still should still give the game a go. I bought a 'fast' but cheap 64 GB Sandisk thumbrive which I strictly use for the Wii U and this was more than adequate for handling the 10 GB of data packs for this game. Think it was like $13 or so last year.

Re: Review: Just Dance 2017 (Wii U)

Mbrogz3000

These games are ok - perfect example though of a game that should be playable within 15 seconds but a dreadful minute or two to get into. Do kids and 20 somethings still play this series?

Re: Nintendo Confirms Switch Isn't Physically Backwards Compatible With 3DS And Wii U Software

Mbrogz3000

The only backwards compatibility I care about is for the VC games. There better be a free transfer or only a nominal $1 upgrade fee for each game..provided some graphical enhancement such as scan lines or NTSC filtering is implemented.

I really don't care about retail Wii U games playing on the Switch. I typically prefer to play old games on the original systems anyway, and Nintendo would probably make a stupid Wii U emulation mode which takes 2 minutes to boot up and get running anyway, similar to Wii mode.

The Switch should have an HDMI passthrough for a Wii U, but that would add cost.

Re: The Speedrun World Record for Super Mario Bros. Has Been Broken Again

Mbrogz3000

The hit box detection glitches when the screen is constantly scrolling at high speed otherwise when Mario is running at full speed constant. maybe the hit box is smaller while screen is scrolling a full speed? - making it easier to clip through edges of enemies?

He could have shaved off some more time during the platform jumps to the flag pole by floating to the bottom of the flag pole.

Re: Former Sony Boss Jack Tretton Lavishes Praise On Nintendo And The Wii

Mbrogz3000

Sony's former CEO has lots of public coulda woulda shoulda comments regarding the PS3 launch price, the PS Vita, and now praising the Wii... wonder is he is fishing for a consulting job now or if he is just really that well off that he doesn't need to worry about another company picking him up... normally comments like these remain close hold for a while when spoken from a person of former leadership.

Re: Fangs For The Memories Castlevania, You're Now 30 Years Old

Mbrogz3000

Whoa - I'm admitting that I'm getting old now! I remember going to a friend's house to play Castlevania around when it came out... I was never any good at it and those controls were so damn stiff.. You eventually work around it though. I have it and CV3 on the 3DS and am still chipping away at them. I beat CV4 on Wii U last year- very tough and long game. Just got Dracula X for Wii U which has its difficulty surges, and will eventually get SOTN on PS network when it dips down in price again. Great game series, wish I would have played it more as a kid. Well... I am still I kid I guess, who just has to act professional and like an adult outside the 4 walls of my house and outside my 4 wheeled steel cage person carrier.

Re: The Mini NES Classic Edition May Have Some Neat Display Modes

Mbrogz3000

I just want video quality which is better than the Wii U VC... For those who don't care or know about video quality - Nintendo basically makes the pixels look blurry and softened around the edges on the Wii U.

I want some scanlines and nice bright colors... And I want this thing to boot quickly. It shouldn't take 15 seconds to get a NES game booted and running the way it does on the Wii U.

Re: Hardware Classics: Game Boy Pocket

Mbrogz3000

I only had the original brick , and never upgraded to the pocket or color...it's important for younger folks today to understand that we did not simply discard electronics or 'upgrade' for the sake of upgrading back then. Also years 95 & 96 and on was when I started getting extremely interested in girls...all the video game playing was kind put aside for the remainder of high school at least for me.

Re: Nine SEGA 3D Classics Get Discounts in North America

Mbrogz3000

I have no interest in Ecco- plus I'd rather play the sega cd version with the better music. I think Gunstar Heros is all that's left for me.

I love streets of rage 2, but I already own it for the Xbox 360, as well as the original cart, and I've already done my yearly binge to play it. I don't need it on 3ds. I'd rather play it on emulation anyway with high sample rate sound and video scan lines.

I recommend Afterburner, Hang On, and Outrun...the extra features are worth it, and allow you to progress.

Re: Developers Don't Seem To Know Any More About Nintendo NX Than You Do

Mbrogz3000

Well.. All three (Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo) have now announced some type of intermediate hardware upgrade in less than 5 years after launching this current gen. Microsoft and Sony have yet to let us know what the hardware improvements will net in terms of gaming...we do know the 3rd party's are not allowed to make exclusive games for the Xbox 1.5 or the PS 4.5, nor have a higher quality gaming mode...so we don't know why it's being done. Knowing this, I have a feeling the NX hardware will be more or less like a Wii U+++, still running the same OS and architecture... Which means in addition to new NX exclusive titles requiring whatever gimmick peripheral, the current Wii u library would run without a special mode.

Re: Video: Learn More About Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2

Mbrogz3000

Depends on who's getting pirated. If it's an EA game, or some game with all the week 1 DLC locked up on the game disc you paid $60 for, then they deserve it. Or if it's a game that's intentionally kept scarce like xenoblade chronicles and you want to try it before downing $80 for a used physical copy. Otherwise it hurts developers and the people who create the content we love.

I own Galaxy and Galaxy 2 physical copies, btw.

Re: Review: 8Bit Hero (Wii U eShop)

Mbrogz3000

I watched this games preview on my Wii u and at first I might be interested...but I'm tired of supporting and donating to these indie devs just jumping on the retro bandwagon, and trying to be the next Shovel Knight. I'd much rather play old SNES or NES or Genesis games when I go through my yearly retro binge.

Re: retroUSB's HDMI NES, the AVS, is Heading for a Summer Release

Mbrogz3000

AVS + Everdrive = ultimate NES experience on HDTV?

(BTW, I certainly don't condone piracy, but I also don't support scalpers who are artificially and unreasonably hoarding all the cartridges away from us to control the supply. Our US NES and SNES antique games should cost the same as the Japanese equivalents.)

Re: retroUSB's HDMI NES, the AVS, is Heading for a Summer Release

Mbrogz3000

I own this guy's retrousb adapters and they are extremely well designed, play lag free, and have a zero effort setup process. It's true plug and play. If you've been following this console project, then you'll know he's been treating this like his baby. This console is sure to be a hit. (I'm sorry but those Retron consoles are garbage, both appearance wise and the way they run and display the games.)

Re: There's a New Miitomo Update Coming Soon

Mbrogz3000

In my opinion I think miitomo is the most useless app I have on my phone. What is the utility of this stupid thing anyway? It's some guy or gal who walks around in a room all alone and asks you stupid and mundane questions, and then gives you a meaningless lackluster response. On top of that, the voice this character has is extremely creepy, no matter what adjustments get applied. And I still don't know anything about the 3 or 4 currencies in the app. I never paid any real money for my xbox avatar clothes and I'm sure not doing it for this one either. Miitomo may very well be the absolute worst waste of time and money that exists as a phone app. I have real games to play with my limited and budgeted entertainment time..both on my Wii U and on my phone.

Re: Review: Pinball Arcade (Wii U eShop)

Mbrogz3000

As soon as I saw the Terminator 2 machine, I impulsively purchase the T2 Pro table. I loved playing the table as a kid even though it was difficult. Overall, it plays pretty well, enough to allow you to proceed through a table's typical ruleset. If it wasn't for the generous tilt control (the tilt sensor gradually resets instead of counting bumps) it would be much more difficult. The tilt control is somewhat random though doesn't compare to the real thing. Nothing like physically and gently sliding the whole table left and right to consistently save the ball. This table was always pitched more agressively which makes the ball roll faster... And it rolls just like in the real game. Another minor note is that the each table may have a different real-life pitch which is why the ball rolls differently on some tables. I think they may have even included some of the lag...I distinctively remember T2 not having a very rapid or strong response upon pushing the flipper buttons when compared to a 2000's or 2010's pinball machine. Modern tables today just require you to breath on the button for a strong flipper response. Just something else to consider before 'flipping' out over any perceived lag.

The ball, flipper and bumping sound effects could be much better..they are way too compressed and sound like they're in a tin can. They are basically unacceptable quality. The game rom sound effects though are authentic... I remember hearing the music and Arnold's voice having some level of compression and quality reduction because they were on rom chips. It's perfectly fine.

Appearance wise, I don't think it could get much better unless they were to add even more polygons to the models. The picture overlays are 100% perfect. I think a walk around camera could have been easily added..but they are focused on getting near perfect gameplay.

Emulation wise, these guys are emulating clock cycles so the Wii U is simulating the machines cpu, which eliminates emulation bugs. Pretty impressive.

Just know that this is one of those download titles where all the DLC data is preloaded and sitting on your Wii U... You are paying for unlock files to access those tables. The only positive here is that you can almost instantly demo the table before you buy. Another annoyance is the eshop takes away the ability to purchase a season once you buy one of those season's tables. Also, the eshop table listing doesn't perfectly correlate to the table listing in the game's store... Only some tables can be demoed while others must be purchased first. Maybe it's something they will fix.

Re: Launching NX Next Year Is The "Proper" Thing To Do, Says Nintendo Boss Tatsumi Kimishima

Mbrogz3000

I'll wait again just like I did for Wii U to see what software is available and how they handle the VC transfer.

Maybe they will clean up the video quality of VC titles this time around and introduce scanline filter options (like blarg's filters) and get rid of the blurry edged pixels?

NX cannot be just a Wii U 0.5 update for me to buy another system... And it can't be some console box without software to run on it either.

Re: Review: Star Fox Zero (Wii U)

Mbrogz3000

I've taken off work today (yes on a Tuesday) to spend some quality time with Fox McCloud (and really with my baby baby ) . I'm really enjoying the game, although the motion controls really are distracting at times. I have a feeling that this game is one that people will adjust to the control scheme, then once the game gets cast aside after a few weeks, will forget how to play. Then 10 years from now when its dug out again, people will suck again at controlling the game. Its really sad. I pulled out my Starfox 64 (N64 version) last year, and I was able to do a decent play through to come within 10% of my all-time top score. For Star Fox Zero, the controls are going to need relearned after an extended break.

Nintendo probably could shoe-horn in the N64 control scheme through an update if enough people complain - I don't think there are any sections that require the precision of motion controls. This game was treated like the Wii U's 2nd to last baby (Zelda Wii U will be the last), and its only getting 7 of 10 type reviews...and the average on amazon review is only 3.5 of 5. Maybe the controls will get addressed ?

Re: Get Ready To Spend Those Platinum Points, New My Nintendo Rewards Are Live

Mbrogz3000

Am I the only one who thinks the Miiotomo is a complete waste of time..and money if you actually pay for the virtual clothing?

Nintendo should consider re-releasing their own in-house cartridge systemretro system. I bet if they kept it the same SNES, and NES, they wouldn't have to re-negotiate deals with the 3rd parties...and could just go ahead and re-manufacturer and release the games because its for the same system. I refuse to pay $300 for Chrono Trigger - I have no problem playing it for free on my SNES emulator with Blarg RBG filtering!

Re: Video: Check Out Nintendo's Early Connection With The World's Most Famous Sailor

Mbrogz3000

Whoa, this one jogged my memory a bit. I knew someone in my old neighborhood that had a Popeye arcade machine back when I was about 7 or 8 years old... so 1987 or 1988. Not sure what his parents did for a living, but i thought it was amazing at the time that they had an arcade game in their basement, which happened to be Popeye. That may have very well been my first electronic gaming experience, with exception to the TI Home computer and all its cartridges, and the occasional arcade game I'd get to play in public areas. And those Apple IIc learning games you could play on the classroom computer.

Re: Nintendo Download: 7th April (North America)

Mbrogz3000

No thanks for this week...although I protested it initially, I went ahead and purchased the Mega Man Legacy Collection (hard copy) earlier this week, even though I already own MM 1-4 on the 3ds, and MM 2-3 on the Wii U....as well as MM Anniversary for PS2, and the complete rom collection which I can play using a real NES controller. The shear amount of box art content included, the nice artwork displayed on the lower screen during gameplay, and the immediate access to each game soundtrack is what sold me. If your cost conscious, and can forgo the physical game cartridge, just purchase it as a download for $15.

Curious to see what the Spring Sale entails..

Re: Guide: Which Nintendo 3DS or 2DS System Should I Buy?

Mbrogz3000

I love my 3DS XL and I've owned it since it was released - but at this point, I'd wait. For those like me who to like to own physical copies - the majority of worthy games are going to be difficult to locate. Ocarina of Time for example had a limited re-release going on until it recently became value priced, but otherwise it was no where to be found for a good 6+ months or so. Other games like Starfox 64 are no-where to be found. (I round Best Buy and Target every week or so, and monitor their weekly inventory and trends and customer behaviors.)

I'd say if you need to be playing SNES on the go, then get New 3DS XL. If your fine without SNES, then get the 2DS since the 3D effect on 3DS is more or less a useless garbage feature. I briefly tried 3D on the New 3DS, and it does work as described, so thats another + for the New 3DS.

Another minor annoyance - I frequently travel to the UK for work from the US. The US power adapter doesn't support 220 V AC..so I end up leaving my 3DS behind because I'm too cheap to buy the official UK adapter for $25 USD. Although I guess a 3DS US adapter can be plugged into the 110 V AC line in UK bathrooms for electric shavers... I'm too afraid of damaging my system though.

Re: Konami and Capcom Are Bringing Some SNES Classics to New 3DS

Mbrogz3000

@retro_player_22

We're going to have yet another handheld pushed out to us in about a year to year and a half... Which probably won't support these VC games we're being asked to buy again and have already bought... That's the issue I have with being indirectly asked to buy the New 3DS.

Anyway Nintendo needs to work with the old IPs to come up with a profit sharing scheme where customers have unlimited access to the complete NES and SNES library, either for a monthly or yearly fee. I'd pay $80 per year for that combined with competent multiplayer connections on the Wii U or NX. If you stop paying, you can't have access anymore, and you lose access to the library.

Re: Konami and Capcom Are Bringing Some SNES Classics to New 3DS

Mbrogz3000

Guys, Gals... I was running Mega Man X on a desktop pc back in 1996 or 1997, single core pentium 1 @ 166mhz.

Those little superfx chips ran at 10MHz to 20MHz, so writing a block of code to mimic and emulate their instruction sets on today's hardware...lets just say the coding doesn't need to be efficient. 3DS has a multi core ARM processor used in smart phones, and has more than enough excess capacity processing to easily handle any SNES title...even with the nice VC software shell and state save system in place.

Re: Konami and Capcom Are Bringing Some SNES Classics to New 3DS

Mbrogz3000

Skeptical side of me thinks they are requiring New 3ds for these SNES titles just to stimulate more New 3ds sales. I have a hard time believing the 3DS can't run SNES titles... I remember playing emulated SNES games on the old family Gateway computer with a 166mHz pentium 1, 16 MB Ram and no special GPU. They ran good enough for not needing to spend $70 per title. Sure, superFX chipped games didn't work back then too well, but I'm sure the 3ds is significantly more powerful than a 20 year old computer.

I just don't buy it, and I won't be buying a New 3DS to play Retro SNES games. Nintendo wants to mess with the retro gamers like me with the money? That's fine then, I have the complete SNES library and a retrousb controller adapter for my real SNES controller... The games I care about work perfectly and are playable on a large screen tv.

Re: ENKKO to Restore the N64 Controller to Its Former Glory with New Kickstarter Campaign

Mbrogz3000

I didn't like the n64 controller's big mushy d-pad. The curve they added across the face of the controller made the left side of the dpad taller than the right side(if I remember correctly). That was my main gripe with that controller. Mk trilogy was pretty difficult because of this, although that game had issues with the button input timings.

Anyway, I never really had problems with the analogue stick, and replacement sticks are readily available for cheap with the true 'feel'. Not sure what the business case is for this project.

Re: Review: Mega Man Legacy Collection (3DS / 3DS eShop)

Mbrogz3000

I think I'll pass. I already bought 1-4 on my 3ds as they were released, and I even rebought 2 and 3 for the Wii U for conveinent big screen play. 4 was just as boring as I remembered it back when it was on cartridge, so I stop there. Considering that I voluntarily buy these old school VC games to help the developers and Nintendo (I have the entire library of all old school games on every system), and I still have my MegaMan Anniversary disc on the PS2, I'll just pass on this one. Why isn't this coming out on the Wii U?

Re: Gallery: Charles Martinet and (Doug) Bowser Join Fans to Celebrate the Relaunch of the Nintendo NY Store

Mbrogz3000

@Pj1 I will admit, in my opinion and this is only my opinion, that the merchandise can be a little lacking some visits. Tshirts, mugs, bags, lanyards, posters, wall art, cheap action figures, good figuart and good smile display figures only occasionally, board games, plush dolls... That's about it and there are only so many times you can see the same stuff with little to no change. Sometimes the new hard to find amiibos are readily available. Things like the Christmas sweaters can be purchased from eBay at around the store price. The swag items also are on eBay at reasonable prices.

Nintendo should consider finding some of their old SNES and NES and gameboy demo units for upstairs for the retro guys like me. Those things were true works of art!

@MJKOP Thanks!

Re: Gallery: Charles Martinet and (Doug) Bowser Join Fans to Celebrate the Relaunch of the Nintendo NY Store

Mbrogz3000

Can't wait to visit the refurb! Looks like they are starting to get more focused on displaying the Mascots. I really like the statues. And that natural light coming from the corner on the 2nd floor where the display cases used to be definitely will make the store pop. Very smart upgrade for sure.

I figured it would have been a very busy there for the reopening, and my wife and I are more fans of wondering into NYC as tourists for the day unplanned...not a good idea this weekend though.

And my wife is only 4 weeks away from delivering our very own Princess Peach, Daisy, Rosalina or Princess Zelda. It would of been too hard for her to stand and waddle around the city today.

Beautiful day (weekend really) for the event though for those fortunate to visit!

Re: Talking Point: The Allure of the Virtual Console and How Nintendo Can Harness It

Mbrogz3000

Never mind the VC games - I certainly hope NX is DIRECTLY backwards compatible with the Wii U library...I don't want to have to launch and wait for some Wii U emulation mode to boot up. The Wii backwards compatibly is terrible. We (well not me) must be foolish....since most of us who already own Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, and Punch Out.. are willing to re-buy them at $20 each just because they rapid load into Wii. No upscaling, visual improvements or anything.

Its gotta be terrible having a large, previously paid-for VC library of games on the Wii, which you need to boot into, wait, then load up with the wii-mote..after getting up to turn on a wireless sensor bar..ugh.

The more bad or cheesy decisions that get made, the less I'm willing to look the other way just because its Nintendo.

I think they need to have some type of unlimited lifetime license for all the first party classics on all future Nintendo hardware or software platforms...and give everyone like me who have already bought them once or twice a significant discount. I actually bought SMB3 for both the Wii U and 3DS...so instead of charging me a $10 or $15 for the unlimited lifetime license, charge me only another $5 for the NX, Super NX NX-64, NX-cube and on. I know this would never happen though.

Re: Hardware Classics: Nintendo Super Scope

Mbrogz3000

This is a great article on the Super Scope!

I wasn't an SNESer back in the day (I'm slowly catching up on all the SNES games I should have played), but a Genesis boy, so I had the Menacer. I got the Menacer so that I could play T2 Arcade with a game gun, and was hoping for more game support. From the technical standpoint, I believe the menacer was equal to the super scope in terms of the technology behind the on-screen tracking, only the menacer was a pistol with a modular gimmick where the shoulder stock and scope were removable.

I'm not sure about the Super Scope tracking, but for the Menacer all I remember is how bad that optical tracking was, and how much more difficult it was to keep the crosshairs on those terminator endoskeletons. The crosshairs would jump around on screen, off where you were aiming! The 6 in 1 game cart was ok, there was some type of Toejam and Earl game which was kinda fun...but definitely forgettable. For me, the Menacer was a disappointment. The only other game I believe came out was called Bodycount...and I wasn't using $70 (1993ish $70!) of my extremely limited, non-existent funds. Another tidbit...Revolution X (which played identically to T2 Arcade, and was actually an upgrade kit to T2 Arcade machine), which came out on all the home systems (and was pretty terrible) should have been playable by both these respective game guns, but simply was not supported.

I hope the gaming experience with the Super Scope was better for everyone fortunate to own and play it.
