Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 are among the most critically acclaimed and popular titles of the Wii era, even proving popular as Virtual Console downloads on Wii U.
They're also games with interesting histories - from the origins of the sequel as Super Mario Galaxy 1.5, down to the fact the first game was desired so much by naughty people with an aversion to spending money that it was the most pirated game for two years. Throw in unused assets and animations that point to intriguing design choices, and they're a good topic for the Did You Know Gaming? treatment.
Well, that's exactly what's happened - take a look below.

So much piracy!
A great game fur sure. I used to be a dirty entitled pirate back in the day, but this game was one of the few I actually bought. Hahaha.
I love all Mario games but I actually enjoyed 3D World more than Galaxy.
It really deserves more love.
Pirates drive the world.
Pure joy, two of my most beloved games! Super Mario 3D World is right up there too by the way, absolutely loved it.
@MajinCubyan Same here - my Wii was modded, but I bought Mario Galaxy.
Still not finished it, mind...
YO HO HO, AND A BOTTLE OF RUM!
But wait...WHY IS THE RUM GONE!?
After playing it. I bought them both for £20 pounds. Really good games that it took my time away from Mario kart
2 > 1
@Toadsfriend "I love all Mario games but I actually enjoyed 3D World more than Galaxy. It really deserves more love."
No.....no!
SMG 1 & 2 are the best 3D Mario outings.
But I hold SM3DW just as high.
I feel like the 3D World / Land is in a different catagory.
If that makes any sense. 😅
I would love another Galaxy game or even a 3DS port of 1 & 2 would be nice.
Lol the first game sold 11.5 million. More than any other 3D mario game.
Behold the irrelevance of most piracy.
Super Mario Galaxy is a masterpiece. The music is soaring and lovely, Rosalina and her backstory provide a grace and bittersweet melancholy that perfectly balances the joy of exploring Galaxy's gorgeous worlds, the gravity mechanics were innovative at the time, the whole game had this... sense of grandeur to it that is missing from most other Mario games and, considering this was on the Wii, I almost can't believe I'm saying this, but the controls were nearly perfect. Mario's physics were spot-on and I loved using the remote to collect and shoot star bits.
SMG2 isn't a bad game, but it's missing a lot of the grandeur, melancholy, and scale that, in my opinion, helped to make SMG the magical experience it was. SMG2 felt less like an adventure and more like a really extensive expansion pack.
EDIT: Just watched the video. Turns out SMG2 really was just a level pack. Haha!
"LOOK! A PIRATE! HAVE AT HIM!"
(I'd post a gif featuring the angry mob from "Stop The World, I Want To Goof Off" - Treehouse Of Horror XIV - ganging up on Martin Prince, as it would fit the rampant piratophobia image, but I couldn't find it)
A lot of work goes into pirated stuff which is then pirated anyway. We get it.
@Dezzy
Thank goodness someone pointed it out.
@gcunit Haha, same here as well. On both counts...
I am such an amazing pirate i actually wear two eyepatches
Why do you keep on referring to Wii titles on Wii U eShop as Wii U Virtual Console titles? They're not. They're Actual Console titles, downloadable.
I bought both games at release to make up for the pirates.
Galaxy has the best music and epic feel.
Galaxy 2 has the best level design.
@Toadsfriend Nah, if anything 3D World is overrated. Generic linear platformer in 3D and it gets 9's and 10's? When did everyone's standards go down the toilet? 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy are on a completely different level from 3D World, and in several ways.
Anyway, Galaxy was an amazing experience that really pushed what this series can do. We need more games like it now.
@BornInNorway81 The Wii U eShop, at least in North America, classifies them as Virtual Console titles.
@BetaBugs64
I did not know that. Even so, they are not Virtual Console.
Two great games, which I always thought looked amazing on the Wii. Yes, I'd love to have seen 1080p 60fps remakes of both of them on the Wii U, but I'm not convinced we'd have seen improvements to blow our minds. As such, I just dream of Super Mario Universe on the NX... Bigger, better and Shinier...
I finished another playthrough of the first one two days ago, now I'm playing the second one again. Man, these are some seriously fantastic games. I think 2 has better level design, and the first one has better atmosphere and a more epic feel to it. Soundtrack, I can't choose, both are incredible. I just love both games to death. I really want a third game, just imagine how incredible those crazy galaxies would look in HD. And if the soundtrack is as good as the other two...man, I want a third one.
Sorry, just needed a place to gush about these games. Can you tell I love them?
I love modding my systems to use Custom Firmware- in fact I'm installing CFW on my 3DS as we speak.
BUT...
I buy all my games. As a collector how could I not? I always support Nintendo, even paying the $8-20 prices for each and every VC title I want to own.
It's just nice backing up saves, having all your games on SD card (without buying TWICE just to have on the go, for a game you already purchased... even though that's what I've been doing for some time, and I'm sick of it)
Super Mario Galaxy, where do you even begin with that.
A masterpiece which forced you to smile throughout.
The musical score really put the cherry on the cake.
@BornInNorway81 Yeah that bugs me too!! They're downloadable software that plays in Wii mode. Nothing to do with virtual console.
Galaxy games are great, but I really hope we don't get Galaxy 3 for NX. I want something new. I think Mario 3D World has done the soft rounded smooth old CG movie look to perfection now and a new direction for Mario would be very welcome. Not darker or less full of fun and energy, just a fresh theme, look. I think I'd like a deeper sense of adventure, and something a bit more grounded and connected. How about the entire game is just one big huge level. Not "open" world with empty spaces but also no hub overworld either. Just a huge network of connected environments and stages. Use switch palaces again to control ability to progress.
This is the fun part with new secretive consoles. A chance to reset and dream about possibilities.
@erv "Pirates drive the world..."
... right into a brick wall.
@Madder128 No doubt, the SMG soundtrack is a Kondo/Yakota masterpiece.
For me it goes 3dw>64>3dL>Galaxy>sunshine.
I never played Galaxy 2, and I did really like sunshine, just not the same levels as the other titles I listed.
@Roam85 For me it goes Galaxy 1 > 64 > Galaxy 2 > Sunshine > SM3DW
For me,there's not much separating my top 3 in quality but Galaxy 1 and 64 blew me away at the time and are 2 of my most memorable experiences in gaming where as Galaxy 2 I knew what to expect so it didn't have that special Wow factor,though I still enjoyed every second of it immensely.Sunshine and SM3DW on the other hand are a distant 4th and 5th for me.great games in their own right but forgettable,SM3DW even more so than the Sunshine.
@Toadsfriend
I feel the same way. I've only played the first Galaxy, have the second but haven't played it yet and though it definitely is a great game SM3DW is more fun imo. Champion's Road took me 5 hours to beat and I plan on going back some day and beating it with all 5 characters. Good times.
I admit I first played Galaxy through piracy, but quickly set out to buy a copy after I realized how well it utilized the 'then' queer controls, making me realize how natural the setup was after swearing off wiimote/nunchuck games at every turn. I recently snatched up galaxy 2 after it dropped to $19.99 new and both games look excellent on my shelf. Galaxy was the game that made me go back and appreciate Super Mario 64, a game I hated for about 17 years.
That being said, Super Mario 64 is still such a great game and I feel no 3D Mario game really did it justice. Sunshine was good in those small sections where FLUDD would go away. Never understood everyone's obsession with Super Mario: Custodian on the Gamecube, but hey it took 4 generations of Animal Crossing for me to finally 'get it'.
As for 3D Land/World, these are not at all in the same ballpark as the 3D Mario titles. they are a third pillar from the traditional 2D and 'new' series and the free roaming objective and exploration based 3D games. 3D Land/World combine the two with a clear lean toward the traditional 2D games as they are all mostly linear runs, timed, and finish with reaching the end of the level instead of a specific objective. 3D World is fun, great with some friends, but a 3D Mario platformer in the vein of 64 and Galaxy it is not.
Also nice to hear Egoraptor speak coherently for a change. I love the guy and I love game grumps, but I really miss him being 'on script' instead of playfully berating Danny or ranting off about some half remembered story while trying to play a game.
@Dezzy
A point well made. I'm curious as to how many people bought the game after pirating it.
I am not as fond of the Galaxys as I am of Mario 64 or Sunshine for the fact that the levels are too linear and they don't really feel like a living, breathing world unlike Isle Delfino. I don't dislike them like I do 3D Land and 3D World but the Galaxy's just don't bring me the same feeling of freedom and adventure as 64 or Sunshine. If it was up to me, I'd love to have a 64 sequel with Miyamoto locked into a closet so he can't tell everybody "oh no, people will not know where to go when we give them a choice of what to do next and how to do it". Seriously, that's just dumb and you make your gamers dumb if you lead them by a hand all the time.
@shaneoh
Or how many people bought the game before pirating it.
I know I did, softmodding the Wii and putting all my games on one HDD so I didn't have to swap discs was a big advantage for me. Of course I also used it to play games I didn't own but for me it was more along the lines of a demo, if I like what I play I'll buy it for sure.
OMG! Super Mario Galaxy is my absolute favorite game! I bought it when I had a Wii and now play it on my Wii U. The use of motion controls work perfectly with this game. I was really hoping a third game would be released on the Wii U. Maybe, on the NX?
@noutBr
That too. Once I get my softmodded Wii set up I'll probably download a copy despite already owning it, only because I don't feel confident backing it up myself.
I rarely pirate games these days and I bought the original ones obviously. I try to buy the games that I pirated/emulated a long time ago to support Nintendo whenever possible and the list is almost finished.
The only way that I pirate more often is that if the games are Japan exclusive and that there's no chance of them to localize the games to the west.....like mother 3 for example....or the great FE games!
@shaneoh
Yeah, with decent internet speed downloading a copy is just easier and more convenient than going through the trouble of creating a backup yourself. There really is no difference, what's on the disc is the same.
Reads subheading Slowly whistles
Interesting, as always!
Piracy = bad.
I consider Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario 3D World corridor-platformers. I much prefer Super Mario Sunshine. However, both Galaxy games have great moments and are better games than 3D Land and 3D World. Actually, I think Super Mario Galaxy 2 is better than Super Mario Galaxy. I hope that Nintendo is developing a real 3D Mario game for NX and a real 3D Metroid game too (like Metroid Prime).
Galaxy was good, but sometimes felt like a chore to play! Much prefer 3d world.
Depends on who's getting pirated. If it's an EA game, or some game with all the week 1 DLC locked up on the game disc you paid $60 for, then they deserve it. Or if it's a game that's intentionally kept scarce like xenoblade chronicles and you want to try it before downing $80 for a used physical copy. Otherwise it hurts developers and the people who create the content we love.
I own Galaxy and Galaxy 2 physical copies, btw.
This all has been known for years now. And, well... The only way to beat pirates is to offer something better than them. GOG.com does this, while allowing people to copy their games as often as they want. It's always a struggle to do those kinds of things with consoles, so who knows how many people "pirated" to have an HD modded version to play on Dolphin, or because they couldn't afford it due to economic conditions where ever they are. Consider it an honor to be pirated so often- it means people WANT your game, even if they can't/won't pay for it for whatever reason.
There will always be losses. The important thing is to focus on giving your users something vital to draw them in and keep them with you, that sets you apart from having to go through all the work to get a basic copy for nothing. Don't attack your users unless your life truly depends on it. And that's not the case right now.
Remember, in the primary market targets, it takes more time to set up everything properly to pirate games and maximize their experience, than to just buy the console and game. Other markets don't always have that opportunity.
@Bolt_Strike I find this opinion rather funny, because I consider all of Galaxy's levels relatively linear...in fact, I'd only really classify 64 and Sunshine as nonlinear. I rank Galaxy 1, 2 and 3D world all among some of the best Mario games. I found 3D world to be fascinating, compelling, original, challenging, and very beautifully made. Sunshine was one of my favourite worlds, 64 holds a very dear place in my heart. Can't condemn any of 'em!
@arekdougy Yeah, that's why I mean by corridor-platformers. Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 had corridor-platforming all the way. I never got why the were so extremely high reviewed as they were a step backwards compared to Super Mario Sunshine. The Galaxy games are pretty and fun but they are more action games than anything else and I'm not a fan of those tiny worlds with gravity. Partially original, as there was a similar Sonic game before them.
Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario 3D World mix 2D and 3D ideas in a very limited way. They are very pretty as well, the Tokyo team of Nintendo makes very nice games, but the gameplay is more similar to the platform mini games of the Mario Party franchise than to a real 3D platformer.
Nintendo once confessed that 3D Mario games are not as popular as they want them to be. It makes me sad that Nintendo is so obsessed with numbers and can mercilessly water down games just to appeal to a broader audience. This is the Nintendo of after-Gamecube era that is now currently busy with mobile phone games business, much like Konami ceased console game development. I just hope that Nintendo reacts and makes great games again and don't become a caricature of themselves.
@arekdougy It's more than just having open levels. What keeps Galaxy connected to 64 and Sunshine's gameplay is that you still have freedom of progression, you can still choose levels in whatever order you want and complete the game however you want, as opposed to 3D Land/3D World which force you to do levels in a particular order. But even aside from the collectathon gameplay, the larger problem is that 3D Land/3D World adopted the same philosophy as the 2D games and became just as formulaic. There's no original themes or settings, there's no major new gameplay mechanics and instead rely on new powerups and level gimmicks to drive sequels, the plot went back to being simple and generic, the gameplay sticks to the same gameplay elements (flagpoles, map screens, etc.) that we've seen for 30 years. This is the kind of stuff that people are criticizing when they say the NSMB games are rehashes, now the 3D games are following suit and the entire series has been one indistinguishable blur since Galaxy.
