@Peach64 That's true, but the confusion isn't for nothing.
They've stated the game takes place in a time long ago and they've downgraded the technology to show that, with the Pokedex just being a paper journal and Pokeballs looking like wooden capsule things. To then include a smartphone and cameras is jarring to say the least. Not unheard of, what with BotW and all, but still strange to wrap around.
@PessitheMystic This feels like something they should have done in an alternate universe where BDSP got Platinum content with an expanded Distortion World.
Wait...what? Why do we have footage of an (apparently not ancient but) super old region?
The guy in the video calls it a 'strange device', but he also wants to 'document some footage' so it's clearly not that strange as he has an understanding of taking footage in the first place and therefore understands it to be a camera.
Way too expensive. Part of me wonders if it's Nintendo trying to re-establish the price it can put on its legacy titles so it has a kind of precedent when it takes down future ROM sites and the like. They can say 'this title is available on the online service for X £/$/€ so that's exactly how much you're stealing from us', although producing a hefty number hasn't exactly been difficult for them thus far.
Was Other M really well-received at the time? I remember it actually being widely disliked on release but I could be mistaken.
In any case I feel like this is standard for games that were shot down at the time. Same thing has happened to Pokemon's fifth generation. Now it's the darling.
Never heard of this game before. Looks kind of like somebody put ARMS and Splatoon in a blender, just by the art. I'm sure the gameplay is nothing like that though.
@Geobros From what I've heard, you get what you pay for. They're not classics but they'll fill up time if you just want a simple JPRG to slog through, though this is all apparent from reviews so I'm not talking from experience.
Someday, when I've got through the things I really want to play, I'm going to pick up one of these Kemco titles and see what they're really like. They look horribly generic from the outside but I've heard that some of them aren't that bad.
@Mauzuri I don't really think it's an issue of gratitude though.
The fan base has been making it clear what they want and don't want for years and years. I'm not against this game at all but it is frustrating to see them fiddle obsessively with a formula that basically has a master laid out for it. Following Pokemon is good. Expanded underground is very good. No HMs is incredibly good.
Single-use TMs, always-on Exp Share, ignoring content from the updated versions of the games, that's all bad. It's all stuff that the vast majority of players condemns, yet they keep doing it.
@Demon-Serph This definitely won't change that. This remake will get by for a lot of people on sheer nostalgia factor alone. If you haven't even got that, it's probably a waste of your time and money.
I'm amazed they honoured this. As someone who worked for Currys years ago, they usually just say no and shut the whole thing down with a 'tough luck' for anyone affected.
@Mobiusman It definitely feels like Nintendo are trying harder than ever to be the Disney of the gaming world. But then, they'll always pushed out weird concepts to see what works.
Realistically, we're probably looking at someone like Sora.
But if my imagination is running wild, Chrono, and you choose your double tech attack in the character select screen similar to how PT can choose their starter.
@LUIGITORNADO I really doubt they'll do it but I feel like Goku would be perfect. It's meme material come true, he's a beloved character, he's a perfect fighter, and even non-gaming and non-Smash fans can recognise and appreciate him. I know it's not happening but like...a small part of me is actually hoping. And I'm not even particularly a big DBZ fan.
@TheStormGL I agree. It feels like either way you might be let down if not navigating all this hype very carefully. I can't think of any gaming character more famous than many of the existing members of the roster. I mean once you've got Mr Game and Watch that's about as old as you can go without something too obscure and ancient.
This looks...erm. Not all that enticing, to be honest. Looks like high-quality mobile title but not something I'd spend that kind of money to have on Switch. Maybe the story makes up for it. Have to wait for more reviews I guess.
@the_beaver If it's the same, then you're right, it's perfectly fine. Hoping that they're just holding back for the trailers, or maybe they just happened to have picked less 'full' looking areas.
So I know the game still isn't out yet and we haven't seen everything, but I'm a bit concerned by just how empty the wilderness looks. Like it looks more empty than BotW. Maybe it won't be so bad once the game drops, I don't know. Or maybe it won't matter because the vibe will be peaceful and cool for it, we'll see.
I would've thought they'd shut down the old servers shortly after launching the new game, but fair enough I suppose.
Glad something's coming along to replace the old client. Somewhere along the way the spaghetti code of the old one stuck my client in a permanent persistent lag after an update and I just stopped playing. It would be nice to have it back as a casual time sink I can play on my phone.
@Peach64 That's definitely true. They showed quite a lot but told us nothing, similar with Legends: Arceus.
I really wish they'd be more communicative. It kind of felt like they were tossing this out to appease fans after a long silence and now they're just going to disappear again.
On positive notes, I like the graphics overall and I love that backgrounds stay consistent in battles, rather than the bland empty voids you see so often in Sword and Shield. This game already makes Sw/Sh look even more rushed than they originally did.
@Yosher I'm the same as you. Skipped Sword and Shield, looking for something to convince me to come back. For now, every other generation will be keeping me entertained anyway.
Honestly, I'm not readying myself to be amazed. Not pessimism, just realism. If it ends up being exciting, great. If not, then I wasn't hyped anyway.
But my wish list would be Arceus Legends gameplay that isn't 20 FPS and BDSP features that take positives from Platinum. Battle Frontier would go a long way.
@jsty3105 No harm done. I agree that Switch ROMs are absolutely not concerned with 'preservation', same with 3DS - the games are hard to get and expensive in the latter but they're still 'out there'. RE reading your comment, that's what I get for scrolling right down to the comment box without catching up first I guess. I think your bullet points will help clear a few things up for any readers who arrive hereafter.
I feel like a judge should be sure they absolutely understand the subject matter before they pass a verdict. In this case, would they feel the same if they knew just how little this actually affects Nintendo's profits? And that you can't really 'destroy' ROMs, nor can you ascertain that they haven't already been backed up or emailed to a hundred other people?
Just feels like this is propelled by a lot of ignorance.
I'm one of those contentious luddites who think Nintendo should never have merged their home console and handheld efforts into the Switch. I know it's highly unlikely, but I hope in future they go back to having them separate. I feel like it let handheld games be handheld games, and home console titles have their focus without having to also find a way to run undocked on an underpowered system.
@Kilamanjaro One of my big letdowns with the game wasn't the graphics specifically, but the way the weapons feel. The attacks are too 'wooshy' and they seem to just clip through enemies without any impact. You look at attacks from the 3DS games, particularly Shadows of Valentia, and every attack has the right sound and visual weight to it. Critical attacks sound like you're smacking an enemy with the power of a god, as they should. Three Houses attacks just kind of swoosh with that same white-blue effect. It bothers me more than it should.

This makes little to no sense.
Re: Random: Forget Dread, It's All About Metroid: Other M On Twitter Right Now
@Spiders Ah, that explains a lot of it then. I didn't follow Nintendo so closely back then so only had a passing knowledge of it. Thanks!

@Luminous117 Yeah that's just insane. You can several 3DS titles for that much. Maybe a pre-owned Switch game or two.

There is no good reason to not give players the choice. None.

Got my code. Don't have the games so I've stuck it on eBay 😅 might as well squeeze a few pennies for it.

Re: The Original Game In Pokémon-Like Series 'Nexomon' Lands On Switch Next Month
@RupeeClock Now this piques my interest. Those visuals are far nicer. Nexomon's looks too clean, like a well-made Flash game or something.
The box art even reminds me of the Sugimori watercolour-esque style.
