@VideoGameEnjoyer I think you nailed the rough feeling there when you said it feels very 'gacha'. Right now it almost feels like a spinoff title than a mainline entry. I think having all of these past characters so involved is a mistake, because they completely overshadow the original characters.
That might not be the case in terms of how the game actually plays, I don't know, but right now I'm the same as you: I struggled to engage (hahaha) with the concept and I'm just plain not interested. Currently having a blast playing Sacred Stones for the first time on my hacked 3DS and it feels like such a far cry from what FE is slowly becoming.
@Lizuka I think it's the eyes and the proportions of her face. She's lost some of that ferocity and harshness that was integral to her design, now she just looks like grown-up Nowi or something.
I never used to and I think Jim does an excellent job of explaining why that is. He's especially right about trading for a Pokemon that has a nickname. I just can't do it either.
That having been said, I've recently started training an actual team for Emerald's Battle Frontier for the very first time and I've been giving them nicknames because it feels right. I've got to say I actually like giving them names, it makes them feel more special. Still getting used to the idea but I like it more than I thought I would.
@dluxxx Bro I share all of that love, you summed up just how incredible the 3DS is. Good point about being introduced to series too, I'm the same. Discovered Fire Emblem and SMT like you, as well as Metroid and Kirby and it also brought me back into Pokemon.
Still need to try Stella Glow but I'm intrigued after your recommendation.
@tofuman86 Homebrew is the future. Community efforts to enhance and preserve the 3DS and past games far outstrip anything Nintendo could do at this point.
@strollin_stu Agreed, the Switch is funkless. Absolute funk deficit. Somebody at Nintendo could slap together a nice background tune in a single afternoon and it would do wonders to jazz up the experience of using the console.
@KindofaBigDeal Hacking my 3DS was the best decision I ever made. I have everything from Nintendo's handheld back catalogue at my fingertips. It's amazing.
Tears as in rips makes no grammatical sense. You'd say there are tears IN something (tears in the fabric) not tears OF something, if you meant it in that way. It's tears as in crying.
'Stability' meaning 'yet another attempt to stomp down the CFW crowd that will work around it within ten minutes'. Just give it up, Nintendo. Let it go.
Regarding the question around the tears (rips) vs. tears (crying) question, I'm pretty sure it's the latter. Grammatically you wouldn't say the rips 'of' something as much as 'in' something, so it would be more like Tears in the Kingdom if it was the former. Tears 'of' implies crying (of as in deriving from) just like 'Breath of'.
Stopped reading when the largest regional dex ever that introduced a brand-new type was second worst.
I think X and Y are boring, babyfied games that are sad follow-ons from the majesty of Unova BUT they objectively have one of the most incredible Pokedexes. It was so big it had to be split into three parts and it has absolute bangers. Ranking it low because 'meh starters' is absolutely silly.
@nimnio True, but then I wasn’t saying that Metroidvanias mean constantly going back and forth. The con at the end of the review is quite literally ‘lots of back and forth’. Even well designed Metroidvanias have lots of back and forth, Super Metroid for instance.
@Ryu_Niiyama I'd even argue that lack of direction, whilst frustrating, is part of the Metroidvania experience too. If you're being told 'hey now you have this power so you should go right here' then the game's not doing it right.
They could've used the time the thirst trap shower bit took up to show a bit more of what the gameplay is actually like but okay, fairly interested. I'll be keeping an eye on this for now I guess.
@dil_power If you've never completed a JRPG, I'd be very surprised if this would be the first you saw even half the way through. I love JRPGs and I sold Xenoblade Chronicles 2 long before I'd finished the story. They're very dense and slow-paced games with a spiders web of different combat systems and it can be a lot to wrap your head around. Like a lot.
@Snatcher Absolutely. The lights, the sounds, the fun and the victories and the losses. There's such a vital energy about an arcade, especially for people who grew up using them.
@Orokosaki Same story for mine. I remember I could take some stuff to trade in at GAME, then walk down the road and try Gamestation who would offer me like £10, sometimes as much as £20 extra for the exact same stuff. Dark day when I learned they were getting bought out.
@Orokosaki Hey I'm exactly the same man, I can wait for a long time until things come down. UK-based too. Remember the Gamestation days? Those guys were my bread and butter.
@Orokosaki I think this is true for chains but some independent stores are killing it. I think as long as there's demand for physical, the actual brick and mortar stores will survive in some form.
Also at first I read "number of reductions" in the article as "number of reeducations" 😬 Is it weird that I was surprised but not shocked?
Now here's hoping these enemies feel distinct to fight against, as opposed to different shapes of target to just home in on and smash without a second thought.
@Greatluigi Yeah true, unless you were to use certain tools. They’re great games. I recommend getting one if you can, even though the events are gone they’re still super worth having.
Like others have said, I think that approach has its strengths and its drawbacks. It's clearly shown itself in the past with the ways that Nintendo have come out with something unlike what anybody else is doing on the market and it's successful because of that.
At the same time, it likely does stop them from taking note of positive examples. It probably explains why they sometimes end up leaving out positive aspects of previous games even when the sequels should arguably build on them.
I don’t know how anybody can honestly engage with games like these, and I don’t say that as a ‘because they’re trash’ remark. I genuinely don’t understand because the gacha mechanics, to me, are too distracting and I know that ultimately the game is looking to get me pulling the lever on the slots, so to speak. I don’t know how you can engage with something like that without being put off by the fact that it’s ultimately masquerading as a game in many ways.
Honestly the weirdest part for me is feeling the need to dredge up vague Italian American heritage to defend having a non-Italian VA for Mario. Besides the fact Charles Martinet isn't Italian, I think we're long past the point of cultural sensitivity as far as Mario goes, not that I've ever known any Italian person to actually give a toss.
@Dilly-Mick See that's another reason Gen 8 is a different beast: I'd say past generations focused more on the 'core' region, but this time we've been paying a lot of attention to Sinnoh and Hisui so Galar has suffered, like you say. I completely get what you mean – the franchise has just become too busy to be contained like that for much longer, especially now we have stuff like Legends mixing things up even harder. Let's be honest, the whole 'generation' thing started suffering when Pokemon Ranger got filed under Generation 3 despite being on the DS and releasing just a few months before Diamond and Pearl. It's all a bit weird.
@Dilly-Mick I've come to see 'generation' as simply a demarcation between the regions that take the main focus of the core series games. Though you could argue that 'generation' has been meaningless since the jump from Gens 4 to 5 since there was no hardware change between them. I don't think anyone can really say for certain what it means anymore.
@SteamEngenius Same. Nintendo will always face a problem from people like us. I wouldn't be surprised if they're banking on the incoming generations who will grow up thinking that renting all your media is just par for the course, and I suppose it will be.
Jesus Christ. Yes, okay, I get that the letter of the law allows them to do this and they're exercising their rights and all that monotonous legal goodness, but context is important.
No other gaming company behaves this pedantically. Honestly, what juicy profits is this guy stealing from them by having monetised videos of covers? Again, I get that they're working within their technical remit, it's just really disappointing and sad to see them being this incredibly anal about things like this. This isn't even on par with crushing mods and fan projects, this is just petty and sad and small. Hope they're pumping their fists over in Japan. Well done guys, mission accomplished.
"And this new game system itself is something that doesn’t really exist in any other comparable titles"
I really want that to sound exciting, I do, but coming from Sonic Team it just makes me wonder if the reason that it "doesn't exist in other titles" is because other studios avoided or scrapped it, whatever "it" is. I guess we'll see soon enough.
@SwitchForce I’m holding out that they’ll really nail the Legends formula as it continues. Once they do, they’ll have something on par with the mystery dungeon series but even more competitive to the core series games. THEN it’ll get the aftercare it deserves.
@ThomastheTankEngine I can understand why you’d feel that way now. Me, I still want to support their new game efforts where I can, but you and I can differ on that just fine. I totally get how some people feel like you do these days.
