It's the final Nintendo Download Update for Europe before Christmas, Xmas or 25th December, whatever you choose to call it. It brings a couple of popular retro Mario treats, a decent Wii U eShop title, a whole load of discounts and more besides. Let's get to it.
Wii U eShop
Kung Fu FIGHT! (Nostatic Games, €1.99 / £1.49) - The second release from this studio to make its way to Wii U, this has a similar visual style to The Quiet Collection but is a twitch-reaction runner; there are multiple difficulty modes available, too. We gave this a recommendation in our Kung Fu FIGHT! review.
Wii U Virtual Console
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (Nintendo, €7.99 / £5.49) - This Squaresoft-developed title was the start of an era; RPG-style experiences featuring Mario are a regular occurrence nowadays, and they have this SNES release to thank. It's a thoroughly charming and memorable experience that we wrote about recently, and we'll bring you a review soon.
Super Mario 64 DS (Nintendo, €9.99 / £8.99) - The original is often lauded as one of the greatest and most influential games of all time, and this re-make on DS was certainly a showcase for the portable's capabilities. This iteration introduced new content that included playable Luigi, Yoshi and Wario characters, though we felt it didn't live up to its source material in our original review.
Wii U eShop Temporary Discount
Darksiders II (Nordic Games, €12.49 / £9.99 /until 7th January, normally €49.99 / £39.99)

3DS eShop
Japanese Rail Sim 3D Journey to Kyoto (Sonic Powered Co., €1.00 / £1.00 until 7th January, then €14.99 / £12.99) - The latest entry in this series in which you gently guide your train around the rails, this may have some appeal to Nintendo fans as it takes place on the Eizan Electric Railway around the company's home city. Despite that potential charm, however, we were critical of this one in our review.
Ocean Runner (Teyon, €2.99 / £2.69) - With fish breeds that conveniently echo quite a few of those found in Finding Nemo, this is a runner (swimmer?) with a top down perspective and online leaderboards to boot. We'll take a deep breath and dive in for a review.

Just upgrading Super Mario RPG.
any Nintendo published software sale at xmas anyone is aware of ? I mean, for games like Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, Mario 3D World, Luigi U , etc ?
Finally getting SMRPG!
Never played SM RPG so think that'll be good fun on the Gamepad.
I wonder if this means any of the other Square SNES RPGs will finally be coming over to western eShops?
"(Sonic Powered Co., €1.00 / £1.00 until 7th January, then €14.99 / £12.99)"
Wait, what? Seriously? That much of a spike?
I got SMRPG on the Wii with the Festival of Light many moons ago. So I'm guessing this will give the option to upgrade
Yes yes yes- Super Mario RPG finally hits the VC. A very pleasing early Christmas present from Nintendo.
SM64DS and that awesome Legend of Kay Anniversary discount.
Mario 64 DS is a totally different experience from the regular Mario 64 - try it before you dismiss it, everyone! It's pretty interesting!
@antonvaltaz This. Yup. Me Too.
@KeeperBvK Indeed. But £1 is about as much as i would pay for that given the review.
Lots of sales here. Slightly annoyed that I splashed out on SM64DS last week at CEX for £15 but I suppose it's still better to play on a 2DS than VC... Sigh... no. The controls are so frustrating that a save state will come in really handy.
YASSSSSS MARIO RPG and MARIO 64 DS! Have been waiting for so long!
Upgrading Super Mario RPG. How does it work?
BIT TRIP SAGA for me
I shall be playing Super Mario RPG as it never made it to UK shores. Although I'm a bit worried I'll be comparing it to Thousand Year Door!
@Sinton Very simple, if you purchased Super Mario RPG on the Wii Shop Channel then you'll get a large discount. If you bought it on the Wii then you must have done the Wii to Wii U system transfer for the discount to show up.
I'll be upgrading to Super Mario RPG, but I think that's it. I have Xenoblade to play and while there are some good discounts, I already own all the games I want.
@EarthboundBenjy still I hope they give us a discount for owning the original as well... otherwise i'm gona have to wait before deciding to make this a purchase!
Super Mario RPG!!!! (will upgrade)
I hope FFIV, Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana are up next!!!
@Grumblevolcano I purchased it on the Wii Shop Channel on my Wii U (in Wii mode).
Legend of Kay Anniversary discount looks really tempting, nice to have a 3D platformer for a nice price
Legend of kay looks good at thst price and I will do the upgrade on mario rpg if its available
@whodatninja Let's hope this (and Cloud for Smash, DQ for 3DS) signals that the Square Enix games are heading to the Virtual Console.
@Sinton So in the end you have to do nothing, the discount will show up as soon as it's available to purchase.
@Grumblevolcano Great! Thanks
I bought darksiders for that price at the previous sale but haven't had a chance to give it some love. I'm sure I'll enjoy it.
Legend of kay seems like a fun platformer for that price.
Super Mario RPG for me
I sense more Nintendo-published sales announcement within this week. Getting SMRPG!
@EarthboundBenjy My recent playthrough of SM64 was less enjoyable than usual. I think I forgot to wear my nostalgia-tinted glasses for that run. I hope US gets the DS version so I can finally decide for myself which is really the better game.
I was hoping for a discount on Captain Toad as still haven't got that yet
4-5 decent 3DS discounts and a few good indies on Wii U, but as far as retail game discounts are concerned, this Wii U offering is abyssmal. Literally every other digital shop is doing more this time of year.
Virtue's Last Reward is a steal at under a tenner.
Will probably grab SMT at that same price.
NoE is doing a good job of getting out some classic VC games on Wii U.......hoping some of them make it over thepl pond soon
Where's the Nintendo games discounts? The last 2 weeks it's been all third party and indie developer price cuts. I want to see Nintendo put their hand in their own pocket. And the last Cyber "sale" was terrible with just 8 games only available for a day in pairs over 4 days. I mean even with the discount it was cheaper to buy some of them physically. I'd like for discounts on VC games. Maybe a 3 for 2 offer. I own all the retail games so any discount there is worthless to me.
Would have been nice to see some deals on Nintendo titles, maybe next week? New Years Sale!
Aaaah, why Devil Survivor but no Soul Hackers
I might actually get Conception II for that price, but we'll see.
I'll get Super Mario RPG. I've never played it for more than the first hour or so. I hope we'll get other Square games too. Some nice discounts but I already have the ones I need. I recommend Virtue's Last Reward. It's one of my favorite games of all time.
YES! YES! YES! FANTASTIC!! SMRPG!
Now please Nintendo, put the rest of Square Enix's SNES games on the VC as well as their GBA and DS games including Chrono Trigger DS. Once you put that game on the VC, you'll make me a VERY VERY happy person.
4 weeks in a row: Nothing for me this week.
Those Korg Instruments are a STEAL
Legend of kay for £4.99 ill be all over that
@antonvaltaz I'm really hoping they release Final Fantasy VI on Wii U as I've got it on Wii virtual console but it's just not the same having to boot it up all the time.
Virtue's Last Reward for £10. Anyone fancying playing one of the most mind-blowing games I've ever played (and I've played a lot of 'em) don't miss out on that deal. It's well worth that much, nearly 30 hours to reach the end and the pace barely drops at all. Highly recommended.
Nothing for me. At least Xenoblade will keep me busy for a long time
SUPER MARIO RPG please! I thought Nintendo were done with SNES vc titles on Wii U???
Legend of Kay too! I mean what a bargain.
I also want Human Resource Machine, Electronic Super Joy and The Swindle but I'm getting greedy now.
I think it's so weird that they released Mario 64 DS on a system that already has Mario 64. Yes I know there are differences but... Are there enough to warrant a release over something else we don't already have?
And B; WOW that is A LOT of discounts! Very cool
SMRPG! It's a Christmas miracle!
Argh, my wallet I'll defintely get The Swindle....been hoovering up most of the Curve games in the sale actually, they're pretty good. I'll also upgrade Super Mario RPG as I've never really given it that much time and maybe Tengami at that price too?
Legend Of Kay is tempting at that price though I'd prefer a physical copy.
@Lizuka
I've given up on Nintendo's VC.
Super Mario RPG? YES!!! Nice "surprise" christmas present, Santa - eh ... Nintendo!
Gah, left my Wii U at uni and won't be able to take advantage of the Legend of Kay discount in time. This is why Nintendo need an online storefront like its competitors have had for years.
@Sinton I hope we'll also get the DS remakes!!
The Swindle being priced at €2.99 last week must have been a mistake or a "Swindle" if you will. Not going to buy it seeing as I've bought other eShop games like The Swapper and Stealth Inc. 2 when they had previous discount prices around 7 or 8 Euro. I haven't played those yet when I could have bought them now for €2 each.
And I'm not paying for Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars again. I own it on the Wii Virtual Console. It's a great game, highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't played it before. So that leaves nothing for me to buy this week.
All of these great old school games on wiiu , None of it makes a damn difference if people aren't buying a WiiU , The console is too expensive and desperately needs either dropping in price , Refreshing or retiring ASAP.
@ThrowMeBarrel I agree. Zero advertising doesn't help either.
Sooooo jealous of you Europeans today!
Can't wait for Mario RPG to be released on the North American VC!!!!
@lividd3ad
I think they do have an online store? You use your NNID and it sends the info to your Wii U. Maybe it's just for Nintendo published games though...
@Churchy I would suggest not to compare it to The Thousand-Year Door: part of the staff of Super Mario RPG, including the directors (Chihiro Fujioka and Yoshihiko Maekawa) one of the executive producers (Tetsuo Mizuno) and the composer (Yoko Shimomura) are currently working on the Mario & Luigi series (even though the name clearly implies that even this series wants to differentiate itself from Super Mario RPG), while the Paper Mario series is developed by a totally different team.
@Sligeach Seems you can upgrade to the Wii U version with a huge discount, I'll try it out later since I got the Wii VC version as well.
Here's hoping there will be more Square-Enix titles coming to the VC (and to Nintendo alltogether).. so very late, but better than never..
And I agree with the crappy Nintendo advertising. I was in a shop today and I saw the Wii U Mario Maker pack is as expensive as a PS4 (€288,-, but without games). €240-250 might do the trick.
@MikeW
IF it gets released on NOA VC. We still don't have Metroid Zero Mission...
PRAISE BE TO JESUS!!! Finally SM RPG comes to the west on the Wii U!
This is the first SNES game on the VC in how long???
Next Chrono Trigger and FFIII (VI)???
Mario RPG is a SNES game I never tried, so that will for sure go in my basket. Legend of Kay is too cheap not to buy, but what about Darksiders II? Is it something worth adding to a huge backlog of games? For the 3DS I guess I'll finally pick up Monster Hunter 4. Got Bit.Trip on Wii U and liked it, so should get it on 3DS too. Will be a nice christmas this year
I may get Shingeki no Kyojin: Humanity in Chains for that price, but Christmas is expensive, depends on how much money I still have.
I'm broke until the New Year.
@Don
Just curious... Did they translate the EU VC of SMRPG into German, French, Italian, etc or just used the US English texts?
@Sinton Seems to be in Japan right now. They've been seeing more SE games lately and are getting Final Fantasy VI Advance as their big Xmas treat along with OOT.
I don't think SE will be able to resist what with Cloud in Smash and the fact as well as their NES/SNES games, they have plenty of Wii, GBA and DS games they can throw onto the service, and Nintendo could do with another big VC supporter.
Oh man, I'd jump on Japanese Rail Sim 3D Journey to Kyoto for a buck (however that's converted to CAD) but sadly, I live in NA. PPPPFT. Hopefully the same sale appears for us too.
Virtue's Last Reward, did they ever fix the corrupting save files bug?
It's never too late to get into MH4U. Just sayin'
Mario RPG and Monster Hunter 4 for me this time.
Well there's allot of discounts on Wii u stuff I want. A big factor right now is HDD space with xenoblade taking up all of my space and I haven't even got the game for Xmas yet! Looks like I'm gonna need to get another storage option or delete more old stuff if I've got a chance of buying anything
Don't worry NA! This means we should be getting it by next August or so!
@Mister_Wu No worries, I'm aware that it's a different team as it's been Intelligent who handled Paper Mario, I meant more in terms of overall enjoyment and RPG mechanics. As good as the Mario and Luigi series can be, I always prefer the early Paper Mario games. To me, Thousand Year Door is still the best Mario RPG out there. FEEL THE RAWK!
@Churchy: Ah, ok! In my case, both series have a special place in my heart, so I don't have to worry! Of course, compared to the first two Paper Mario, Super Mario RPG looks more "conventional", but it's also the first Mario RPG made and it has its own personality, distinct from the ones of the two current series, so I would still give it a shot!
Darksiders II is a steal at that price. :] I encourage anyone that's remotely into action/adventure games to give it a try, it's a marvelous experience! I have it on disc, but might get it digital now just because of the convenience.
What a joy!!!
If Japanese Rail Sim Kyoto goes on sale in North america im all over it! Love the first game
@Yeahman Nah, it'll be instead: "Team Naughty won the most recent Splatfest so no VC this week!"
Wonder if they'll let you play Super Mario 64 DS with the analogue stick as the controls on the DS version didn't work.
I really hope SMRPG comes to the NA eShop soon as well. I've played a good portion of the game, but never actually finished it.
Looking forward to trying SMRPG as I have never played it. Please Nintendo add in dual analog control to SM64ds as that will improve people's enjoyment hugely.
@lividd3ad @Zach777 Not sure about NoE, but NoA's website does currently allow you to buy 1st party games digitally, however I believe it just gives you a download code. When Nintendo Account launches in March that'll be fixed - 1st party, 3rd party, and indies will be available to purchase on their website and they'll start downloading automatically.
That was close >.>;
I saw Legend Of Kay the other day at 15€ and I was considering to buy it, good thing I waited a bit.
I hope NA gets those Legend of Kay and Bit.Trip deals.
Looking forward to trying SMRPG as I have never played it.
Why haven't you already downloaded it on the Wii eshop?
Wonder if they'll let you play Super Mario 64 DS with the analogue stick as the controls on the DS version didn't work.
Yes. All DS games on the Virtual Console allow you to use the analogue stick instead of the d-pad.
Nintendo should really be thanking anyone who's using their eShop this Xmas with some savings on their own library.
Hopefully a sign other Square RPGs will start appearing on the eshop soon... Looking at you o'secret of mana.
@allav866 If you didn't enjoy it why did you replay it all again? Hell, if you've already completed it numerous times why are giving Nintendo money for their below par emulation? AND if you have completed it several times as hinted of course the magic will have worn off. It is a finite game, in a finite world that can be fully explored from top to bottom on your first play through.
Luckily I've got my BS alert goggles on. Lol.
Couldn't be happier with MRPG coming to Wii U finally, had been so close to getting it via the Wii mode too.
Does anyone know how many game slots your Wii U can store? I'm a long way off using all my external 50gb, but had go delete some demos as it said there were no more available slots to show my last download.
Hey, I live in New Zealand and quite a few games on these lists never make it over here, like Steel Empire and such. Why does this happen? It always gets my hopes up in these EU download lists.
Hey, I live in New Zealand and quite a few games on these lists never make it over here, like Steel Empire and such. Why does this happen? It always gets my hopes up in these EU download lists.
So does this mean that there will be no X-mas discount on any Nintendo games? Or could it be that they'll be announced later?
@CB85
I have heard it is the worst version of Darksiders...
Framerate worse than 20fps in most/many fights.
It's great that we're seeing more collaboration between Nintendo and Square-Enix with Cloud appearing in Smash Bros, a Cloud amiibo, Super Mario RPG on Wii U VC and FF 6 on the Japanese VC
Hopefully there's something big coming down the pipe - starting with more SNES-era RPGs on the VC
@tysonfury
Snes games in 3ds eshop?
Dream of cut head......
@DontPlayDumb
That would be lovely. I have a hunch it will happen around March 2016 with the launch of the new nintendo account ecosystem.
Super Mario RPG
If I could ask you to play with me
Only if it wasn't a one player game
Something about it just isn't the same
Someone please get it...
@GLA i heard it was 300 but i might be making that up. are you close to that figure?
I wonder if the German, French, Swedish and Italian releases of SMRPG on Wii U VC use the same sunken ship password as the US English.
I am tempted to get Devil Survivor Overclocked but I am still split on getting it as I rather have it as a physical copy.
More discounts, yay! The Swindle, Legend of Kay and Human Resource Machine are all on my wish list waiting to be ticked off so I'll take the plunge on them.
The special photos with Mario eshop cards are out in Sainsbury's now, but the app doesn't do that much. Still, if anyone is going to get an eshop card, might as well get the version with the app code and card.
SON OF A-
I am tempted to get Devil Survivor Overclocked but I am still split on getting it as I rather have it as a physical copy.
Only do so if you intend to sell your physical copy. Otherwise there just isn't any point doing so.
It's be nice to have Super Mario RPG 2 in the future...
@neyoung8 I'd need to count, but with VC stuff it's probably 240-ish, so maybe 250 is the limit. I still have 300gb left, it's ridiculous. Have bought a 2nd Wii U now anyway. I might email Nintendo in case they can do something.
@IceClimbers You can redeem remotely the codes you get in NoA's site here: https://eshop.nintendo.net/redeem
Just sign in with your NNID, redeem the code and it'll push the game to your Wii U or 3DS automatically! It's been since before Smash launch last year, I used it to download the code I bought in a retail store and when I got home, it was already downloaded on launch day!
@GLA that's interesting, I have used about 130 slots but may get close to your number in the end. It must be annoying. Maybe Nintendo life can do some research to find out too?
If you havent tried Fairune on 3ds. I highly recommend it. Its like a very well done 6 hour Zelda game. Well worth it.
Oh cool! I'd love to play those games on my Wii U - oh, but I have to live in Europe! I am about fed up to death with Nintendo of America not updating the US Virtual Console with good titles!! It's been forever since we got an awesome Nintendo game on VC here in the US. What good is Nintendo of America doing these days? I would love to play SM64 DS on the big screen, or play SMRPG for the first time in my life, but I can't. I'm so frustrated. It should be shared through all regions.
And I'm still sitting here, waiting for a cool Atlus discounts, like the North American ones... come on, Etrian Odyssey IV/Untold/Untold 2 is insanely expensive here, can we have at least a tiny price cut?
Come on Nintendo, you know you want to release Super Princess Peach.
FFV and VI when? SE released them on Steam but they're the stupid mobile ports with awful art direction.
If super Mario rpg comes to NA this week I plan to pick that up.
Lucky Europeans hope they'll release in Super Mario RPG in North America asap
I like how those deals are still available in first week of january. I'll go visit my parents and celebrate christmas but i check these sales when i'm back in my home for new year.
Why doesn't NA announce VC titles on Mondays? Europe gets the announcement on Mondays and it gets the VC games on Thursdays just like NA.
