Re: Unlocking All Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighters Should Only Take A Couple Of Hours

@Cobalt

"the way gamers are treated."

Yes, gamers...the truly oppressed and shackled class of humanity. Their rights are clearly being infringed upon with these additional "easy" modes and "accessible" challenges. It is sad times indeed, and Nintendo must face the consequences for these grave injustices. How are gamers supposed to lord their "accomplishments" over others and provide themselves with identity and meaning for completing a difficult video game?

Re: Unlocking All Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighters Should Only Take A Couple Of Hours

@Cobalt

Nintendo, like every other media company, is in intense competition, not only for money, but for people's time. Time is the most important currency, and Nintendo is up against Netflix, Youtube, other consoles, etc. for attention spans.

What they are doing is the right approach. People dont have endless hours to throw away on each game. If your definition of a "gamer" is someone who can blow hundreds of hours per game, then it is cliche and outdated, however...you can still do that on Odyssey (your example) if you choose and find every single moon or balloon and outfit, etc. The option is there if you want to sink 100+ hours in, but those who dont should not be excluded from enjoying the experience.

This strategy is actually not about "casualisation" but inclusion, and it is giving both sets of fans value, instead of one vs. another.

And also, you haven't even played Smash yet, so probably not the most intelligent thing to do, implying that there will be nothing for "gamers" to sink their teeth into. The game is massive...

Re: Switch Online Is Going To Be The Place To Play Classic Nintendo Content, According To Reggie

Mallow

@BongoBongo123 I wonder if you apply this same logic to Netflix, Spotify, etc?

Consumers have led Nintendo down this path for their enthusiastic adoption of services like the above, and just wait until big AAA games become "streaming" only.

The abandonment of physical media for "convenience" has led to consumers essentially renting content forever.

If this bothers you, stock up on retro games and physical media while you can.

Re: Switch Online Is Going To Be The Place To Play Classic Nintendo Content, According To Reggie

@DarkKirby “refuses to sell old games to purchase” ...at your command, you mean?

Someone find me the quote where Reggie says “ We are going to release every NES game ever and only in 3 per month increments, before we even consider other systems and we will never make legacy games available for purchase”...which is how it’s largely been interpreted (i.e. misread and spun out of control to nearly troll levels).

Those on here practially advocating piracy are not serious about actually owning these games. If they were theyd hunt them down like everyone did prior to VC (the boom in physical and online retro game shops leaves little excuse). The only thing they are serious about is instant gratitifcation and getting bulk IPs for imaginary prices.

Someone explain to me why you cant just wait a while or play these games other ways? Im trying to figure out the urgency. Last i checked, Gamecube existed for the past 17 years. Is “i just want it on switch too” a really valid reason for the constant negative vibes?

Re: Switch Online Is Going To Be The Place To Play Classic Nintendo Content, According To Reggie

Mallow

@Yorumi I think his point is that buying these physically would still set you back. CIB “black box games” can be very expensive. Even CIB super mario 3 runs around $30/40. Can you get them cheaper for cart only? Sure. But all of them for $20? Nope.

Ive said this before but if Nintendo came out with a digital download bundle of the current NES games online with a $20 price, we’d be reading “day one buy” comments all day long.

Yet they are included with the service and all we get is moaning about “what isnt there.” It is exhausting. There are so many ways to legit play these games that if people were seriously interested, theyd put in the time to get them.

Re: Switch Online Is Going To Be The Place To Play Classic Nintendo Content, According To Reggie

Mallow

Era of virtual console: $8 for NES and SNES games?? Outrageous. When will Nintendo focus on new games and stop gouging customers? The ports are so inferior to the originals.

Switch era: Omg all we want is virtual console, but this time, every game for 20$/year. Outrageous!

Apparently “listening to fans” = give me whatever I want for the price I want in the time frame I want or the toys are thrown out of the pram.

Re: Switch Online Is Going To Be The Place To Play Classic Nintendo Content, According To Reggie

Mallow

I wish I could fast forward until an announcement about other systems coming to NOS is made so I can avoid reading the exact same obvious, whiny comments in every story.

I know everyone thinks Nintendo can just dump roms for those systems without localizing them for Switch controls and online play, etc but that is not reality. It takes time. The service is 2 months old. 2 months...

In the meantime, those desperate folks for gamecube can always buy a wii console for like 10 bucks at any flea market and find the physical versions to avoid the oncoming stroke they are apparently experiencing due to the sudden wild demand for these titles.

Otherwise, that near-extinct concept of patience may be required.

Re: Pokémon Let's Go And Smash Ultimate Pre-Orders Are The "Best We’ve Ever Seen" On Switch, Says Reggie

Mallow

@3rdParty Totally agree.

And let's be real here...look back at the catalogues of the much-loved NES, Game Boy, and SNES. Among the numerous classics over their lifespans you will find a trove of absolute garbage releases, mostly based around licensed properties (I swear every movie and TV show had a game...seriously "Home Improvement" the game?). The N64 had a smaller library, but how many stone-cold classics are there really for that system?

The Switch has a great library thus far. This is not to say the eShop is not filled with terrible mobile-quality games, but if you include Smash and even Pokemon, it would already be easy to assemble a hypothetical "Switch Classic" lineup with 20 games.

We know there is more on the horizon as well. We know the Switch is not the system for hyper-realistic blockbusters, FPS, or epics like "God of War." Nintendo's philosophy has never been about that, so I'm not sure why people are surprised when those games don't appear.

Re: Nintendo Switch Online Service Had A "Good" Launch, Focus Will Now Shift To Boosting Its Appeal

Mallow

@Mr_Pepperami I actually agree with you completely...if I saw thoughtful, nuanced responses about economics. The economics side does interest me as well, however "gimme (insert system)" doesn't really qualify.

The service is still new. It will evolve over time. The virtue of patience is needed a bit. Just because everything is not day 1, doesn't mean it won't happen in some form. So when I read "boooo" or "fail" for something 2 months old, I don't really do anything but roll my eyes to this sort of "instant hot take" culture.

The Switch has the potential to have a long lifecycle...maybe longer than we have been used to. It will evolve...and its current online numbers aren't a true indicator of anything yet.

Re: Nintendo Switch Online Service Had A "Good" Launch, Focus Will Now Shift To Boosting Its Appeal

Mallow

@Mr_Pepperami I'm trying to figure out how Nintendo's Online Service subscriber numbers (released or not) is of any real concern to gamers. What does it do for you to have those numbers? Apart from say "Nintendo good" or "Nintendo bad" ? Are you able to form an accurate judgement on the service's success or failure 2 months into its life?

The larger point is that it seems the gaming community is more into the speculation of business: earnings, profits, sales, etc. and making snappy judgements than actual games.

You'd think this forum was filled with MBAs of billion-dollar enterprises with the amount of hand wringing over what Nintendo "should" be doing and offering.

Re: Nintendo Switch Online Service Had A "Good" Launch, Focus Will Now Shift To Boosting Its Appeal

Mallow

I don't know about you guys, but the first thing I do when I fire up my Switch and play "Breath of the Wild" or "Octopath Traveler" is think:

"Okay, gorgeous, engaging, fun...BUT what are the numbers here? And how will those numbers impact stock prices? How do those numbers compare with Sony or Microsoft? If the numbers are low, how can I possibly still enjoy these games? Maybe the games actually aren't that good and the system is doomed! Sales figures, subscriber counts...they so directly impact my life...I MUST know. How else will I be able to be on the winning team and side with the "correct" company? And if I'm not "correct," how can I possibly form an identity around it and speak authoritatively about it online?"

Or maybe that's just me...

Re: Nintendo Switch Online Service Had A "Good" Launch, Focus Will Now Shift To Boosting Its Appeal

Mallow

Nintendo has really missed the boat! Why they haven't given away all of their IPs for NES, SNES, N64, and Gamecube for $20/year is beyond me! For that price they should throw in the entire Switch library as well!

As a fan of gaming and art, I am really concerned about the minutia of Nintendo's business figures. This helps me, a random person on the internet, to form instant deep-dive "analysis" and judgements about the 100+ year old company and what it should and should not be doing.

By my accounts, what Nintendo should be doing, is basically just provide me with whatever I want...and now, regardless of business strategy, market, or long-term intentions. That is definitely the best path forwards and would satisfy me...now. "Now" being the most crucial and vital point, before my patient and focused attention turns elsewhere!

Re: Get Ready For Some Shmup Action, Because Astebreed Blasts Onto Switch eShop Today

Mallow

I pre-purchased this for $17.99 in North America. Looking forward to playing it. Been wanting another good sci-fi shooter on Switch.

I am actually glad it's a shorter game experience. As an old schooler, I can't handle an infinite number 60 hour+ games.

The price may seem high for a shorter game, but it's pretty close to what you'd pay for a 2-hour movie ticket.

Should be fun

Re: Soapbox: Nintendo's Maddening Stance On Retro Gaming Is Driving Me To Piracy

Mallow

Why do all games need to be played on each and every console? These retro games can be played on the original hardware, old consoles with virtual console, classic consoles, barcades, retrocons, etc.

There are so many great games for the Switch, are there really people clamoring to play Wcw vs Nwo world tour from N64 instead of Hollow Knight?

This discussion is so tedious and boring. Each new console that comes out, we need to play the same games? This is the mentality that has ruined film: reboot and reuse the same properties to death and no original ideas or properties get created. The indie games that everyone is lauding on the switxh will fall to the wayside if the market is flooded with more retro games.

Its not as if there are no retro games available to play.

Once again, fans want to believe they should have access to every game ever at all times, and only pay for it one time.

Re: Soapbox: Nintendo's Excuses Regarding Cloud Saves Aren't Good Enough

Mallow

The way people tremble in anxiety over cloud saves on this site has become farcical. I must have got the one Switch that isn't teetering on the brink of inevitable implosion.

Everyones complaining is not going to persuade Nintendo to give you every console and its games for a paltry $20 a year. From the very first Switch presentation, they told everyone the online service would be coming, and that free online play was temporary.

The service may not have EVERYTHING you ever wanted and more, but that is life. We got cloud saves for 95% of games, continued online play, and some NES games. Just because people wanted it to be more, or got their hopes up through internet hype and unrealistic expectations...that is not Nintendo's fault.

The endless (and it really has been) negativity around this makes me wonder how people deal with real problems in their lives.

Re: Reminder: Wireless NES Controllers For Switch Are Now Available To Pre-Purchase In North America

Mallow

I pre-purchased these today. Should be fun to use when playing the NES titles, adding some nostalgia and accuracy for these specific games. Looking forward to them.

I realize they are not for everyone, but they look great, and are a cool collectible for me, since my original NES hardware is long gone.

I didn't purchase, and have no intention of getting a NES classic, so these scratched an itch for me. It would be cool if they are compatible with some of the arcade classics as well.

Re: Soapbox: Why I'm Not Excited About Playing NES Games On The Nintendo Switch

Mallow

If Nintendo offered this bundle of 20 NES games for $20 on the e-shop, I suspect many people here would buy it no questions asked.

I think a sticking point is people's idea of permanence...of owning something "forever" vs. the temporary/subscription based model.

The idea of "forever" in technology is an illusion for most...and a reality only for those hardcore fans who collect and preserve retro hardware and software. Even those, one day, will become inoperable.

Like it or not, streaming, in some capacity, and subscription services will be the future of this industry.

Re: Soapbox: Why I'm Not Excited About Playing NES Games On The Nintendo Switch

Mallow

Having these NES games on the go, and to pick up and play for a while will be great!

Like others, I'd love some additional systems, and there are probably some plans on the horizon. But this is a nice start (NES being their first major console, after all).

I really like what the Switch is doing for retro gamers. The fact I now have the original DK arcade, Neo Geo, and NES titles, in addition to PS1 stuff like Crash, and soon, FF7, is unimaginable to me (someone old enough to have grown up with the original NES).

We aren't getting it "all at once," but I am confident Nintendo will start offering more legacy games over time. By the end of the Switch's lifecycle (if it ends), the breadth of classic games has the potential to be massive.

Also, many of the old VC titles looked terrible and muddy. I'm hoping they avoid that, and HD remasters is a cool start.

Re: Wireless NES Controllers Won't Work With Other Games On Nintendo Switch

Mallow

@Nater

I’m glad youre not Nintendo then, because their business model is not about “putting sony and microsoft” out of business. Its about focusing on a specific market, offering them something different from their competitors, utilizing in part, their own iconic Ips.

Also Lol if you think anyone can consciously decide to put two of the largest electronics companies (where gaming is a fraction of their overall output) out of business because they want to.

Nintendo is simply appealing to collectors and users with a nostalgic bent. Why people cant grasp that this is not new, not unique to Nintendo, and unworthy of hysteria, is what is “defying logic.”

Re: Wireless NES Controllers Won't Work With Other Games On Nintendo Switch

Mallow

Why is this so difficult for people to comprehend? These controllers are specialized collectors items for a small niche section of customers. If you dont want them, dont buy them. Strange this needs to be explained to a community where collectors items (special editions of games, systems, amibos, etc) are commonplace.

Every article here descends into a crying fest about evil Nintendo. What is the harm in offering a product to a small market of players that want them? Because they dont conform to your every desire does not render them useless to all.

Re: NES Games On Switch Playable For Up To Seven Days Without Internet Connection

Mallow

If you want to play the games forever, hunt down the physical copies like people had to for decades, buy a NES classic, play your virtual console versions on your old consoles (since people keep complaining about rebuying). There are many alternative options (although I understand endless whining is easier)

It amazes me how entitled people are. Just because you shell out 20 dollars a YEAR, does not mean you deserve to play any game whenever you deem fit or have it forever. If you ran your own business that way you would be penniless pretty fast.

Re: Your Nintendo Switch Cloud Save Files Will Be Lost If Your Online Subscription Expires

Mallow

Nice attempt Nintendo Life, as ever, to try and present a negative spin on the Online Service.

As many rational folks here have stated, this is a non-issue. You stop paying...you lose access. Makes sense. Your saves will remain on your device, just as if you never had the service in the first place.

What is hilarious about the naysayers, is that, had Nintendo never offered the online service, but announced a bundle of 20 classic NES games on the eshop for $20...everyone would be commenting "no brainer buy," "yes, thank you," and "super mario 3 portable? yes!"

Yet, for that same $20, additionally giving players cloud saves, voice chat, and online play, it has become an absolute moan fest.

Re: Video: What Would Ice Climber Look Like If It Was Recreated In Unreal Engine 4?

Mallow

Do we, as a society, constantly need to rehash the past, reboot every minor, obscure comic, movie, or game franchise endlessly, just to satisfy this need to receive the same gratification experienced in childhood?

Nintendo and others have shown they are capable of doing something new with older properties like zelda and mario, but in 2018 do we really need an ice climbers? I know this is not happening, but the comments clamoring for old properties is slightly nauseating. This is why in 20 years we will get “x-men vs. darth vader” or “captain crunch: the movie” instead of the next Godard or Fellini. Because the unending appetitie of prolonged adolescence will be catered to by industries hungry for dollars, not innovation or culture. This sort of mentality is a roadblock to new experiences. We dont need to forever be awash in 80s and 90s nostalgia. Let it be.
