Re: Nintendo Expects Sales Of 'Evergreen' Games To Decline, Putting A Focus On New Titles

Yes, they gained value a decade later, due in part of Nintendo dropping the entire strategy of reprints of evergreen titles at cheaper prices.

Whether you agree or not, the larger consumer market uses price to differentiate between quality. If Nintendo prices their games the same as shovel ware their perceived value could drop, affecting the overall brand.

Honestly. I don’t really see a negative. Even many of their third party exclusives are retaining value. It’s good for the company, their retail partners, and even third party partners.

Or maybe I should be able to purchase a Breath of the Wild at the same price of “LOL surprise movie night?”

Millions of people are still buying. Nintendo will adjust their strategy if they see it as a problem.

It’s pretty black and white. Nintendo making money is good for the company and the gamers that enjoy playing their games.

They seem to price their games right around what the market expects, which is the 60-70 price. I’m sure of it was 100, we’d see the creep as well.

Targeted sales of 33% off for limited time on digital games is not a permanent slash to $20 for physical. It allows Nintendo to still retain value to their brand by not offering bargain bin prices that we’ve seen for shovel ware, like Carnvial Games, in a giant bin at Wal-Mart. It’s about the ecosystem, and Nintendo has done a pretty good job curating it on Switch, clearly, without the heavy discounts.

Idk. I don’t really think anyone deserves cheap and access to a product when it’s not a necessity for life.

You’re too focused on Nintendolife’s choice of headline. Slashing prices to sell more copies at…a lower retail will shift more units, but not increase revenue.

Nintendo has noted that evergreen titles have made up most of their revenue sales the last few years, and they need new games in the market to support the loss of revenue as those titles reach a higher penetration point.

They’re strategy of stepping away from player choice or select titles is mostly likely to retain brand value during a successful period.

Other gaming companies wish they could sell their 4-year-old titles for full price.

What they’re doing makes perfect sense. If gamers want a discount then they should be smarter about where they buy the titles. Try used market places.

@Richnj if they can’t justify a 33% discount, or more if you buy used, then that’s on them for not being able to enjoy the game…not Nintendo.

There is a reason why Nintendo doesn’t do a player choice markdown anymore. It devalues the game. Copies would sit on shelves longer, then there would have to be package reprints for expensive cards. Their model might not be ideal for the thrifty gamer, but it’s making money.

@Vexx2 because Hollywood doesn’t respect the medium. It’s competition. They think they can do it better, so they green light ***** scripts, thinking they’re embracing a game’s vibe rather than doing the IP’s justice.

Then during the marketing all they talk about how big fans they are of the source material.

It’s the same with comics. The quality was rather inconsistent until Marvel Studios came around.

I don’t get the appeal of these expanded celebrity focused ad campaigns. I mean sure. They’re kind of like testimonials. Nintendo is clearly going after millennials with families right now (household of 6 all having a Switch is certainly more lucrative than selling 1 family 1 Wii), but I just don’t see it adding a whole lot of value. Oh well.

I'm trying to put myself in the shoes of a millennial mom, who has 10-12-year-olds being able to connect with Christina Aguilera playing Animal Crossing as her personal driver drives her home. I'm from that generation. I grew up in the 90s. My older sister liked her music. She also gamed on the side. IDK. lol it's weird.

I get the Brie Larson thing. They don't really show her celebrity lifestyle in the ads. If you didn't know who she was, she's just a person enjoying video games.
