Update [Mon 31st Jan, 2022 15:35 GMT]: Sources close to movie news site Giant Freakin Robot have said that the movie Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson hinted at last week is Call of Duty (thanks, Eurogamer).
Johnson is said to be in talks about the new film, but his actual role within it hasn't been confirmed.
A Call of Duty movie has been in the works since 2015, with Sicario 2 director Stefano Sollima apparently in talks not so long ago.
Original Story [Wed 26th Jan, 2022 04:05 GMT]: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has told Men's Journal he'll be starring in another video game movie - describing it as an adaptation based on one of the "most badass games" that he's been playing for years.
"I can’t tell you which game in particular we’re doing, but there will be an announcement this year. We’re going to bring one of the biggest, most badass games to the screen—one that I’ve played for years. I’m really excited to bring it to fans around the world."
Although it's unlikely to be based on a Nintendo game, that hasn't stopped some members within the Nintendo community from speculating:
Johnson has previously starred in video game movie adaptations like Doom (2005) and Rampage (2018). He's also been in games like Fortnite. On the Nintendo front, Hollywood A-lister Chris Pratt will be the voice of Mario in the upcoming Super Mario animated movie.
What kind of "badass" video game movie do you think we might see from The Rock next? Leave a comment down below.

Probably a call of duty movie. Which would be nothing more than a generic world war 2 movie.
Perhaps Mass Effect?
He'll probably take the role of Shao Kahn in the second Mortal Kombat movie perhaps.
I was wondering if he could voice Wario in that upcoming 3D animated Mario movie.
Oh boy it’s Plumbers Don’t Wear Ties!
Pacman.
The Revenge of Clyde!
“It doesn’t matter what kind of movie you might see”
I know what character the Rock will portray, in this upcoming mystery video game movie. Okay, take a look at my avatar. Now imagine him dressed like it, with a blue wig and all. Oh, yeah. The Rock as Luna in... Lunar: Silver Star Story. Yep. Make this cursed fantasy I just came up with come true!
@nessisonett Oh, my goodness, yes.
Whatever role he's going to play, I think it will be great!
I'm going with Gears of War.
If ya smell what The Rock is cookin… could he perhaps be playing Cooking Mama?
It's going to be Clu Clu Land.
Ok hear me out, god of war.
I can kinda see him playing the role of Kratos in a God of War movie
Probably the Mario movie.
Hyperkin posted that it's a Smash movie, which I highly doubt
Doom 2. That or Wordle The Movie.
Wonder if he's finally making that Spy Hunter movie he was suppose to do years ago.
I can't help but think that it may be Grand Theft Auto. Can you imagine the box office from that?
I don't know what game he's been playing, But I'm pretty sure he'll play the main character in it.
It's probably Battlefield. They were rumored to be making a movie a while back.
Oh, cool to see the Five Nights at Freddy's movie is finally being formally unveiled!
I could see him playing kratos in a god of war movie
WWE perhaps? The big return of that franchise? WWF No Mercy on N64 online?
@YuzuRibbon Also Minecraft.
I won't lie...The Rock might actually make a good Ganondorf. Part of the reason is because of early in his career (like, very beginning with him playing the Scorpion King).
American McGee's Alice.
You guys are all way off. He's playing Groose in Skyward Sword: The Movie.
Kirby. I mean Kirby already turns into a rock as one of his down specials so it’s not that big of a stretch 😜 But given his history with Microsoft he’s probably going to be either Dom from Gears of War or Sgt. Johnson from Halo
Definitely think it's God of war.
WWF Smackdown - The movie. He would be perfect for that role.
My guess is he will be playing Abby in a TLOU movie.
The Rock is... Metroid.
Please someone make him stop.
As if he wasn't in one already? (Rampage)
can this guy chill for a second and stop appearing in everything?
I call it first.......Manic Miner the Movie
Boulder Dash?
Gotta be Gears of War
I'm going with something off the wall like a new Double Dragon film. Abobo
He‘ll be the main character in Untitled Goose Movie
It's a movie about a wrestling video game and the Rock... is Badass Billy Gunn!
Surely it can only be "Rock-et League" 😂
New Funky Drive
@RootsGenoa but can he crawl?
@ZombieGavinS Maybe not, but the rock can clearly roll!
Probably... Gonna be crap let's be honest.
I'm not totally against The Rock playing Ganondorf. He's tall, muscular, and knows his way around fight scenes.
But if I had to choose the perfect actor to play such an iconic villain, it would be Marc Alaimo (Gul Dukat from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine).
Not only does he have the distinct facial features that would make him perfect to play Ganondorf, he can play the villain role quite well (for any of those who saw his role as Gul Dukat).
Unfortunately, at 79 years old, Marc Alaimo is too old to play what would undoubtedly be an action-heavy, stunt-filled role. Had he been a few decades younger, he would have been perfect.
All this speculation about what game The Rock is gonna be …
You really wanna know what game The Rock is gonna be in?
It doesn’t matter what game The Rock is gonna be in, coz yo candy a$$ isn’t ready for what The Rock. is. cooking!
Jumanji The Game: The Movie
For some reason I imagined Halo.
Animal Crossing - the massacre
@Ooyah I’m shocked we haven’t had a Netflix series or something similar already.
Doshin the Giant: The Movie.
How have people not already commented something along the lines of "KNOW YOUR ROLE, JABRONI!"?
Probably Halo or Call of Duty
Likely characters: Zelda, Kirby, Donkey Kong, one of the Ice Climbers...
Seriously, probably an FPS
Bayonetta xx
@TheJamesHollan that was my guess too
@nessisonett Waiting on LRG to do pre-orders for that on Switch
@WhiteUmbrella Omg 😆
He's gonna be Geodude in Detective Pika2
Seriously guys? It really can only be one movie…Tetris…The Rock stars as the single-line tetromino, tasked with bringing balance to the ever-growing chaos that has ensued.
Act One : Scene Five
At a shop. Buys am alarming amount of bubble gum.
Act Two : Scene Three
Picks up gun. Puts down bag. Tries gun. Enjoys gun. Wanders off, leaving bag behind. Bag contains bubble gum.
Act Five : Scene Eight
Blasting at alien creatures, reaches for a stick of gun, but realises he's all out of bubble gum.
Rampage World Tour?
Is this for real? If that happends my hype level will reach over 9000
@Friendly Yeah, for sure! WWE The Game, The Movie!
I have a weird feeling it's Fortnite. They just created his in-game character, its still very popular with the kids, now's the time if they were ever going to do it.
I think he would be a great fit for a Gears of War movie, with the franchise's use of over the top huge characters.
Can't wait for Startropics the movie
@dkxcalibur indeed. Rocky WWE style
@MH4 Seriously, when is that movie coming out? I was in 3rd Grade when it was announced, now I’m 15. The script got cancelled, they changed production companies, and just when they finally had a script everyone agreed on, Scott Cawthon got cancelled 🙄.
@Goat_FromBOTW To my knowledge it's still happening, but it's between directors at the moment. Don't take my word as gospel but last I heard, that's what's going on.
Hopefully it's worth the ridiculously long wait.
Don’t get me wrong I love the Rock but none of his video game movies have been all that good.
Dwayne is gonna be Captain Olimar
Badass does not compute with many Nintendo franchises. Unless The Rock's meaning of badass is different than most.
@Rosalinho
That would be freaking hilarious.
It would seem that Ed Boon is agreeing with me too.
https://www.fortressofsolitude.co.za/ed-boon-wants-the-rock-as-mortal-kombats-shao-kahn/
It said ganondorf below one of the pictures, so my best bet is on the legend of zelda
Call of Duty movie? Wow people shooting things, so original.
Most Bad Ass? More like most squeezed for money.
Ugh, yeah figured as much
Now Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson got bought by Microsoft.
Well there goes my interest😕
So it'll basically be every gun-toting war movie ever made then? OK.
I need to ask since I never played any call of but aren’t the stories just ww1-2 stories ? Never really heard anyone praising or saying anything about the story in the games to be honest.
Boring... Who cares about Call of Duty? (I know, a lot of teenage boys do who claim to have had intercourse with many a mother)
There are some games that wouldnt translate well. Example, the supposed rdr show/movie, other than the characters we know and the troubles we've seen, what will differentiate itself from other westerns? Same with ghost of tsushima. Awesome game, beautiful, etc., but what will make it stand out from the other great samurai, kurosawa films. And again with tlou. Yeah, we'll see Joel, ellie, and other characters, but will it be vastly different than the walking dead, besides the jargon(infected/stalkers over walkers), "oh! Be careful of the infected/walkers! But be even MORE WARY of humans!"
Probable plot:
Gawky teen boy getting his butt kicked in CoD finds out where the other player lives and goes to their house to yell at them, only to find out it's a beautiful teen girl and the Rock plays her dad, who the boy bounds with in hoping to get the hot daughter in bed, but they all team up to become world echampion CoD players and the boy happily gets to live forever as a champion "in the friend zone".
CoD? How boring.
The Rock is a charismatic person, I'll give him that. But lets face it: If you need a actor for your trash, you call The Rock. He has been in soooo many trash movies (both normal and "game adaptations" I think). Well, as long as he's happy and it fills his bills. But wouldn't he rather be in a great movie for once? Maybe going for a oscar?
A Call of Duty movie sounds about right for The Rock.
If you are going to base something on a game that bases itself on historic battles, then cut out the middle man...oh unless it's going to be a very generic film and you need a big name IP attached to it.
Already not intersted.
@Duboiss I've never owned a Call of Duty either, but I assume a movie would be based on Modern Warfare, which is a fictional future war. It will most likely be dumb nationalist trash, but I wouldn't mind a complete tone-reversal and make it like Jumanji where a CoD-playing kid gets sucked into the game and suddenly has to live up to his trash talking in a "real" war.
Call of Duty?
Bleh, extremely unexciting if true. Not like The Rock is gonna play Captain Price or Frank Woods (i.e. COD characters that anyone actually cares about).
Ya COD is a little weak NGL.
Called it, see top comment.
He looks like Kryton from Red Dwarf in that Fortnite likeness.
Captain Toad!
This is looks like a flop. There are already so many military movies and CoD isn't really known for world building and engaging story
Can't think of anything more generic sounding than the Rock in a Call of Duty movie.
