There are plenty that crave updated hardware from Nintendo, but the current statements out of the company - alongside outstanding sales momentum - suggest it could be quite a wait. Add in the ongoing chip shortage issues that are impacting manufacturing and sales, and Nintendo is understandably focused on continuing its current Switch success.

In an earnings call company President Shuntaro Furukawa indicated that Nintendo sees the Switch as being mid-lifecycle, with a key goal being to avoid the year 6 slump that impacted previous successes like the Wii (as reported by Bloomberg).

Switch is just in the middle of its lifecycle and the momentum going into this year is good. The Switch is ready to break a pattern of our past consoles that saw momentum weakening in their sixth year on the market and grow further.

It's not an unreasonable goal - the Switch has set a record for the fastest home console to reach 100 million sales; the graph below from Bloomberg also shows the continuing momentum.

It's possible that Nintendo may have at one point planned a notable hardware revision (and perhaps still is), but varied challenges of the past two years (particularly COVID / chip shortages) combined with strong sales may have changed the plan. Regardless of whether any plans have 'changed', the current tone from the company and market realities suggest that the Switch still has a good amount of time yet on the market.

We'll see how it all unfolds in the next 12 months.
