@johnvboy The "masses" are people who don't typically know what's actually happening. I can 100% guarantee you that the "masses" don't even read news from video game sites or know that even the Dex cut is a thing. If you really want to get technical, you're a minority as well. The only reason these games will sell is because the masses have no way of being informed outside social media and looking through the internet.
My favourite thing will always be the Defense Squad who just shout nothing but "haters" and the like as if none of these people actually wanted the game to be good and have no actual valid complaints about the game. It's essentially the same as a child plugging their ears and shouting "LALALALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!".
Look, everyone who's looking forward to this game go ahead, I hope you have a lot of fun. But criticism is just as valid as praise. If you think people don't have the right to raise their concerns about the game then it's just that. Continue to look the other way. Of course this game is going to sell millions. It's for that very reason that this series will also continue to stagnate and not take a single step toward improvement. You may think that this game selling tons is a win, but all it means is that TPC doesn't have to actually work any harder to bring you a game that has actually made leaps and well... "Evolved".
@Kalmaro That's all very well and good that you want to hear a game dev say they want preservation, but you're ignoring the issues with assuming that's how easy it is.
There is no rule full-stop to say that human history in general should be preserved, yet it's something we try our hardest to do anyway. Some ancient cutlery once belonged to SOMEONE, but they're no longer with us. Did they give us permission to preserve it in a museum? Absolutely not.
Gaming history is the same. Believe it or not but this doesn't just come down to "backups". Some companies who made games for the NES and SNES no longer actually exist. The teams of devs who worked on said game are either bankrupt or perhaps even dead with no other rights holder.
The only thing you seem to be keeping in mind is the people who are present to make those decisions. If your issue with preservation is that we shouldn't HAVE to preserve it, then let me ask you what's actually WRONG with preserving it.
If your answer is just going to be "no one said yes", then please think long and hard if you actually believe in everything you're saying or if that's just something a mindless fan would echo for Nintendo's sake of sounding good. If that's your answer then it literally argues the very opposite against your case with the same logic.
@Kalmaro Alright, something you seem to be under the impression of is that this is only effecting Nintendo-made games. This effects games ON Nintendo systems, meaning that these are decisions being made for other devs who aren't actually present to make a choice at all.
"Oh, Sam isn't here to eat his birthday cake? Well, I'm sure he doesn't want it to be preserved so it's fine if we eat it."
If your justice means erasing something from history just because someone wasn't there to say no, then maybe think about whether just because something is legally right, makes it morally right.
Personally, if I were a game dev, as long as my game was no longer legally accessible, I'd be over the moon that people were at least keeping my game alive and enjoying it.
If all of a sudden, that game became available through an online store, of course I'd then expect people to buy it. People who steal will continue to steal, but people who want something to grow and flourish will support it wherever they can.
I will always prefer to play a game in the most official way possible but I will 100% defend the existence of a rom for a game that can be found nowhere else.
@Kalmaro Let's reword what you said into wha you actually mean then:
"Just because someone wants to preserve games that will vanish into obscurity because no other alternatives will be legally given, doesn't mean it's okay."
You talk about breaking rules as if they're this holy grail of morality, but it's technically the rules that aren't okay. If you respect developers, then you should be for preserving their software where no one else has bothered.
Let's not actually forget that Nintendo has literally used pirated roms to sell back to us. I'm NOT saying they have no right to do this, but I'm saying that Nintendo has literally needed to rely on these sites themselves sometimes.
One day, a niche title is going to become 100% unplayable for anyone anymore because not only will the cartridge have decayed, but the software will have become totally unavailable online too, making it difficult for even the devs to get a hold of.
You might not think it happens, but literally devs themselves are capable of losing the source code to their games. Once that's gone, it becomes ectremely tricky to support a games existence.
However, if you're someone who only play games like Mario, Pokemon, Zelda, etc, I can understand why this issue would be one you wouldn't care about at all.
One of those things that sounds cool in theory, but is almost always a complete and utter disappointment in reality. Of course without hearing what people think about it from firsthand experience, you aren't gonna convince anyone without using CG visuals in your advert.
Although Nintendo made that big move before the end of the year to be more lenient on YouTube videos playing their games, you know small YouTubers are still being hit with copyright claims from Nintendo because said games still contain Nintendo's music which is absolutely disgusting. Unless you're a big name YouTuber, Nintendo doesn't care if you're just streaming some fun Smash Bros matches, because that game contains so much of their music, they don't even think to consider being lenient on that too.
Please keep revising you YouTube policies, Nintendo. You're far from done with them yet.
@SNES64DD I think it's hard to appreciate a small insignificant tribute when it plans to be nothing more than that. Had this article not come out, many people may have thought that it would hint towards an actual Snap game in the future. Saying "here's a reference to that thing you really used to like now shut up" isn't often well received unless it actually means something going forward.
@SNES64DD I hope you're not suggesting that's a worthy substitute for a whole Pokemon Snap game. All you do in those modes is stand in one spot and hope that a good pokemon is present. It doesn't go any further into gameplay than that.
There's a point where if you force "innovation" then it becomes a gimmick rather than a new mechanic. Something that feels disjointed and a bothersome to use compared to the rest of the game, or perhaps just becomes boring after the initial set of uses.
I don't believe a word of that mindset anyway. Improving on the old/current formula should be enough to warrant for a new game anyway. This is the only reason I believe dynamaxing exists in Sword and Shield and while I'm sure there's some people who will be really into it, the whole thing is clearly just meant to be there for a cheap hype moment until dynamaxing no longer feels special. I truly thought that the pokemon series would continue to evolve (no pun intended) when they added seasons to Black and White, but all they keep doing is taking one step forward and one step back. Taking away additions that really felt like they were going to stay and help Pokemon to become a more fleshed-out game.
Anyway, back on topic, for another Pokemon Snap game it's pretty straight forward. Add more pokemon? Add an option to play with Labo VR (key word "option")? Maybe add the rare option to capture certain pokemon via Pokemon GO style (it'd suit the on-rails adventure very well). I don't think I've seen a spin-off game so heavily requested by the community yet continues to be so heavily ignored.
@YANDMAN I don't think you quite got what I was saying. Water-colour art is also art. Chalk art is also art. Both of those things are mediums in art. The style is dictated by the artist's choice. Since the key word here was style, that's what I was talking about. I never said pixel art wasn't pixel art. Only that people shouldn't expect to see the same stuff just because it's pixel art.
@SNES64DD Yeah I trust Nintendo and their dev ethics but I'm just saying I can't help but have that bad taste in my mouth when it's announced before the game's released. It's just how the practise has been shaped over the years.
@DenDen I know what you mean. I hated it when they did that for BotW too but most people seem to only make the exception for this kind of stuff for Nintendo.
Don't get me wrong, Nintendo still makes great content but without being behind closed doors, it doesn't exactly instil confidence that I'm not just buying cut content.
@YANDMAN I already gave two examples. Pixel art isn't just one style. If you say pixel art is one style then you're ignoring all the games that try hard at giving their art a different atmosphere, look and consistency. Two of my friends are pixel artists (very talented ones if I do say so myself) and they both have their own distinct style that makes them stand out from each other. Unless you want to also argue that digital painting is an "art style" then I can see why you'd think that but not every digital artist draws the same things. They all have their own approach, ethnics and goals when drawing characters objects and environments.
As I said earlier, both Shovel Knight and Owlboy are games that use pixel art, but they both accomplish different styles. I hope that's a bit clearer on what I was talking about.
Not gonna lie, was very disappointed seeing the "retro" pixel art after seeing that gorgeous promo art on the video thumbnail.
Edit: Also don't get me wrong. I don't ever think that pixel art graphics should die in video games. It's a medium more than it is an art style. It's games like this that call themselves "retro" looking without trying to emulate anything that the early games of the time tried.
If you want a game that actually tries (and succeeds) to look retro, give Shovel Knight a whirl.
If you want pixel art but you still want it to look absolutely gorgeous, fly around in Owlboy for some stunning art direction in that one.
Getting more than a little fed-up with devs that place a few dots on the screen and decide that they have the right to call themselves retro.
Oof, not the price I was expecting considering it isn't too expensive to get your hands on the wonderful Fast RMX. Will maybe pick it up if there's a price drop down the line...
@ALinkttPresent Well call it what you want but the idea is that Sega hasn't given us a new Monkey Ball game in years. Hell if this kicks off, Sega might even be interested in actually making a genuine new entry to the series. Best case scenario they might pull a Sonic Mania and hire these guys to help with it.
@NotTelevision This is the first time I've ever heard that honestly because nothing they've done has really ever been that different to what they're always doing.
How the hell did I not know this was coming out??? I honestly don't care much about whether this game is objectively good or bad but the FACT is that I had hell of a time with this game between me and my brothers and honestly I owe it to this game to buy it again and hopefully at least get that nostalgia kick in the process.
So they aren't actually making the game then. Well I hope when the game's revealed that the real developers can get some recognition rather than just whoever's publishing the game.
This happens literally all the time. Another thing to note that people often do is retweeting Official Nintendo Direct announcements... but one from previous years without checking the actual date.
I do have to say though this really isn't article worthy but I guess even I can sympathise with Nintendo Life when news has been this dry as of late.
Kinda sad people are cheering for this result just because they love Nintendo that much that whatever they win is a "good thing". Like, I get it but Nintendo needs to provide an alternative for this to be considered something we'd be happy about.
So what's Nintendo protecting then? Their property? The property they've sat on for over 20 years and refuse to distribute? Something that's actively vanishing from our history and we're supposed to be happy that Nintendo made it inaccessible indefinitely?
People who don't look much into this see it as "Nintendo stopped Super Mario Bros being stolen without pay". People who have swam through that expansive library will see it as "Nintendo stopped over a hundred obscure and niche titles from being remembered by millions".
Nintendo has every right to do what they've done, but I'm not going to be happy about it until they do something that actually lets us legitimately play all those classic games as soon as possible. 3 NES games a month? They certainly aren't going to give us the whole library I can tell you that now, and who even knows at this point what that says for the platforms coming after NES if we ever get those.
Guys, please don't refer to it as drama. It's clearly a joke. The apparent "fans" who harassed Sakurai clearly weren't genuine in their intentions and were merely trolls. I'd appreciate if people would stop treating guys like these as if they were the worst on the planet when it's just some guys having fun.
If they were legit harassing people non-stop then fair enough but if you can't assume this is a joke at first glance then you likely have zero ability to detect sarcasm.
@luke88 I said that I know Nintendo wouldn't want to tie their fictional characters to a political statement. I know it would sound silly. The point is that this is a subject that has proven to become a large debate every single time it's brought up.
The matter of the fact is that it's something that needs to be finally put to rest.
Biologically boy or girl shouldn't matter. I thought it was deadly clear that Birdo was trying to be feminine thus wanted to be referred to as a girl. If this isn't the case then fine, but I really do feel like this is something that should be put to bed by Nintendo with an official updated statement.
I'm aware Nintendo doesn't want to place any politics around their fictional characters but the sooner they address it the better. It doesn't do any good that people will continue to debate this until official word puts an end to it.
@ThanosReXXX Exactly all that. Whether some people think E3 is relevant at all these days is an entirely different discussion but point is that if you can't make the effort to put the E3 magic of a live show into E3 then you might as well not have an E3.
Why should Microsoft attend E3? Why should Sony attend E3? Why should Nintendo attend E3? To give us something they could show at any time of the year?
Exactly as you said it. The more personal and interactive you are to the audience, the bigger deal you are at E3 in my eyes.
Hell Ubisoft this year when they showed the DK Mario and Rabbids trailer with the LIVE music accompanying the trailer onscreen is EXACTLY why people should be pumped for live shows.
As much as people complained about it. EVEN when Nintendo ended that one stage show with Nintendo Land fireworks, I still found it a little endearing and appreciated that they still wanted to make it a little special to the audience present.
Nintendo isn't going to hit it big every year, but why do the few cons have to outweigh the overall joy of the pros?
I'm also aware that I'm the minority in wanting stage shows back but I'm honestly not surprised that people's only reason for not wanting them back is to "avoid the cringe". Like that's literally down to how Nintendo present it. Not because it happens to be on a stage.
Next thing you're gonna tell me is that the stage show Sony did when they revealed the Final Fantasy 7 Remake was "cringey" and "rubbish". If you can't admit at least that was good then dear lord don't even bother I guess.
@Nin10outof10 If you're a fan of Smash Bros, maybe. I'm not saying there aren't a lot of Smash Bros fans but they honestly didn't show a lot to warrant it as their "best". Think about how other people might view something first.
In my honest opinion I think Nintendo should be doing a bit of both for their E3 press conferences.
Have Reggie walk up on stage and personally introduce us to the kinds of things we'll be seeing this year and step away again to let the screen do the talking for whatever game is to be revealed. Interviews can be done on screen too so they don't have to awkwardly translate for developers either, they can use subtitles, plain and simple. Now Nintendo already have the right idea from what's said here: depending on what's shown at the current year at the time, should effect on how they present it. Got a big hitting game like a new Zelda or 3D Mario? Even Metroid would warrant maybe some kind of musical performance to accompany the trailer.
A lot of people say Nintendo should stick to just Nintendo Direct formats and to which I say: You're missing the point of E3. Yes anyone can agree that E3 is about the games but E3 is just as equally about the balance in showmanship too.
If you don't show any presence at E3 then tell me exactly why you should be at E3 instead of making your own separate event away from the thing. The E3 Treehouses are good too so keep those but when it comes to the main event I can actually appreciate what the other companies do even if they mess it up sometimes.
Ubisoft especially captures what E3 is about whether you love or hate their shows. They make use of the stage and being able to physically see how passionate the developers are is wholy welcome in my arms.
Hell some of you forget that Shigeru Miyamoto himself absolutely loves having an audience and being on stage. He was literally AT Ubisoft's stage demonstrating that fact and he did that LAST year too.
So all in all I think Nintendo have the right idea based on what they've said here. In my opinion Breath of the Wild's reveal was amazing but that would have been amplified by an audience witnessing that live. Truly would've been a more than stunning moment.
This year made sense as a Direct format. They didn't have a lot to show so I believe they made the right decision in not having stage presence. But I have to stress again that if you like Nintendo Directs, that's fine, but if you think a Direct format means they "win" E3 then I have to ask you reevaluate what it means to actually be at E3.
@kobashi100 Resident Evil 7 is a game in the franchise made for current generation consoles like PS4 and XBoxOne. Now I'm not saying the Switch isn't current gen, but RE7 wasn't made with Switch hardware in mind. Also I'd like you to quote me where I said the game wasn't possible on Switch. I didn't say that, I just said that with most ports, it'd come with sacrifices to the game itself. Unless you work at Capcom I would like to know why you think it's a full proof fact that the Switch can run RE7 with zero sacrifices made to the game.
@MrBlacky It'd take more than dynamic resolution for a game like RE7. Textures would likely take a hit too just like in DOOM as well as lighting if we're lucky it'd just be that. But I would be okay with a port like that however I'm not sure if the developers would be alright with doing that all the time to a game they worked hard on especially to make as visually impressive as RE7.
@MrBlacky Because it doesn't require them to absolutely butcher the games graphics and/or frame rate just to get it on there. I can see people's issue with this being a problem for portability, but the way I see it, it's either the ability for those who have just a Switch to play it on Switch or just forget about it. Everyone forgot about the game not being on Switch until this was brought up anyway so I see little reason in complaining otherwise.
People are completely missing the point with why it's being streamed to the Switch and not a download or physical release. Unless you just don't want Resident Evil on the Switch full stop then don't complain about that fact.
Whether this is due to YouTube changes or not, Nintendo is still absolutely God-awful when it comes to YouTuber content that covers their stuff compared to other game companies.
The art looks wonderful but I'd say they need to go with a much brighter environment and maybe tweak the shaders on their models too. I think if you have an art style, then try to match it with your actual game.
Ahh, I hope he's pleased with all his life accomplishments. Now he can kick it back and hopefully enjoy the rest of his life because I'd sure know that's what I'd want to do if I accomplished so many things.
@BulbasaurusRex Nah son, people who call it ugly are those same people who think an anime should make a perfect screenshot on every frame. The same people who hate Mob Psycho 100 for how that looks. They're expressive, the style is cute, and people only dismiss it because they aren't used to it. "Ugly" is such a huge overreaction it's no better than dismissing it if you can't appreciate what it does well.
I feel somewhat tempted to revisit this game and purchase it a third time. I already clocked over a 1000 hours on this game when I first played it on PS3. Around 500 hours when I got it on PC, and probably another 200 just from getting the free upgrade to the special edition on PC again...
Just the idea of playing this portably is extremely appealing and the fact that it isn't a downgrade in any way AND includes the DLC that made it that much more enjoyable? Drives a hard bargain to be honest...
@Littleeddie It really depends on your play style! I played this game first on PS3 and 2nd on PC (it's a LOT of fun despite it's glitches which sometimes actually make it more fun, depending).
If you're a brute-force kinda player you might want to start playing as an Orc. If you want your magic and summon spells to be a priority then the Elven classes might be a little more for you. Khajiit (the cat people) and Dark Elves are pretty great for stealthy players (I chose stealth quite often). Finally, Nords and the more human races you'll find are for your average play style - Good in all areas and well rounded if you don't have a particular focus in play.

If you want pixel art but you still want it to look absolutely gorgeous, fly around in Owlboy for some stunning art direction in that one.
Getting more than a little fed-up with devs that place a few dots on the screen and decide that they have the right to call themselves retro.

Re: Review: Redout - A Slightly Rough Port Of An Otherwise Decent Wipeout Wannabe
Oof, not the price I was expecting considering it isn't too expensive to get your hands on the wonderful Fast RMX. Will maybe pick it up if there's a price drop down the line...
Re: Indiegogo Project Rolled Out! Revives The Super Monkey Ball Series
Re: WayForward And Arc System Works Announce River City Girls
@NotTelevision This is the first time I've ever heard that honestly because nothing they've done has really ever been that different to what they're always doing.
Re: Review: Cel Damage HD - A Flawed Cult Classic That Only Comes Alive When Played With Friends
How the hell did I not know this was coming out??? I honestly don't care much about whether this game is objectively good or bad but the FACT is that I had hell of a time with this game between me and my brothers and honestly I owe it to this game to buy it again and hopefully at least get that nostalgia kick in the process.
Re: Shovel Knight Developer Yacht Club Games Is Publishing A New Title
So they aren't actually making the game then. Well I hope when the game's revealed that the real developers can get some recognition rather than just whoever's publishing the game.
Re: Random: Why Is The Fortnite Logo In This Official My Nintendo Kirby Wallpaper?
Kirby Fortnite crossover incoming. You can't hide it from us now, Nintendo.
Re: Random: Fake Nintendo Direct Announcements Are Fooling People On Social Media
This happens literally all the time. Another thing to note that people often do is retweeting Official Nintendo Direct announcements... but one from previous years without checking the actual date.
I do have to say though this really isn't article worthy but I guess even I can sympathise with Nintendo Life when news has been this dry as of late.
Re: Win Yourself A Diablo III Limited Edition Nintendo Switch
If I win this, it'll make a nice Christmas present to my brother who's been failing to save up for a Switch himself! ;^)

Re: Nintendo Wins $12 Million From Trademark And Copyright Infringement Lawsuit
Re: Waluigi Fans Cause More Drama At PAX Aus With '#WahtAboutMe' Super Smash Bros. Protest
Re: Random: Super Mario Party Shows That Nintendo Still Can't Decide Birdo's Gender
@luke88 I said that I know Nintendo wouldn't want to tie their fictional characters to a political statement. I know it would sound silly. The point is that this is a subject that has proven to become a large debate every single time it's brought up.
The matter of the fact is that it's something that needs to be finally put to rest.
Re: Random: Super Mario Party Shows That Nintendo Still Can't Decide Birdo's Gender
@luke88 You say this as if I didn't already point it out in my original comment.
Re: Random: Super Mario Party Shows That Nintendo Still Can't Decide Birdo's Gender
@luke88 yes.
Re: Random: Super Mario Party Shows That Nintendo Still Can't Decide Birdo's Gender

Re: Nintendo Is Open To Dropping The 'Direct' Approach At Future E3 Events
Re: Nintendo Is Open To Dropping The 'Direct' Approach At Future E3 Events
I'm also aware that I'm the minority in wanting stage shows back but I'm honestly not surprised that people's only reason for not wanting them back is to "avoid the cringe". Like that's literally down to how Nintendo present it. Not because it happens to be on a stage.
Next thing you're gonna tell me is that the stage show Sony did when they revealed the Final Fantasy 7 Remake was "cringey" and "rubbish". If you can't admit at least that was good then dear lord don't even bother I guess.
Re: Nintendo Is Open To Dropping The 'Direct' Approach At Future E3 Events
@Nin10outof10 If you're a fan of Smash Bros, maybe. I'm not saying there aren't a lot of Smash Bros fans but they honestly didn't show a lot to warrant it as their "best". Think about how other people might view something first.
Re: Nintendo Is Open To Dropping The 'Direct' Approach At Future E3 Events

Re: Resident Evil 7 Is Coming To Nintendo Switch In Japan
Re: Resident Evil 7 Is Coming To Nintendo Switch In Japan
@MrBlacky Because it doesn't require them to absolutely butcher the games graphics and/or frame rate just to get it on there. I can see people's issue with this being a problem for portability, but the way I see it, it's either the ability for those who have just a Switch to play it on Switch or just forget about it. Everyone forgot about the game not being on Switch until this was brought up anyway so I see little reason in complaining otherwise.
Re: Resident Evil 7 Is Coming To Nintendo Switch In Japan
People are completely missing the point with why it's being streamed to the Switch and not a download or physical release. Unless you just don't want Resident Evil on the Switch full stop then don't complain about that fact.

Re: Nintendo Changes Requirements For Its Controversial YouTube Creators Program
Whether this is due to YouTube changes or not, Nintendo is still absolutely God-awful when it comes to YouTuber content that covers their stuff compared to other game companies.
Re: God Wars: Great War Of Japanese Mythology Brings Eastern Legends To Switch
The art looks wonderful but I'd say they need to go with a much brighter environment and maybe tweak the shaders on their models too. I think if you have an art style, then try to match it with your actual game.
Re: Legendary Nintendo Developer Takehiro Izushi Has Officially Retired
Ahh, I hope he's pleased with all his life accomplishments. Now he can kick it back and hopefully enjoy the rest of his life because I'd sure know that's what I'd want to do if I accomplished so many things.
Re: Teaser For Next Year's Pokémon Movie Reveals New Art Style
@BulbasaurusRex Nah son, people who call it ugly are those same people who think an anime should make a perfect screenshot on every frame. The same people who hate Mob Psycho 100 for how that looks. They're expressive, the style is cute, and people only dismiss it because they aren't used to it. "Ugly" is such a huge overreaction it's no better than dismissing it if you can't appreciate what it does well.
Re: Teaser For Next Year's Pokémon Movie Reveals New Art Style
People accept this better than the amount of character bursting from the Sun and Moon one??? I don't think I understand people anymore.
Ash straight up looks weird here.
Edit: Just to clarify, I don't hate this art style, but Ash in particular does NOT look suited to those eyes.
Re: Review: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Switch)
I feel somewhat tempted to revisit this game and purchase it a third time. I already clocked over a 1000 hours on this game when I first played it on PS3. Around 500 hours when I got it on PC, and probably another 200 just from getting the free upgrade to the special edition on PC again...
Just the idea of playing this portably is extremely appealing and the fact that it isn't a downgrade in any way AND includes the DLC that made it that much more enjoyable? Drives a hard bargain to be honest...
Re: Review: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Switch)
