@BlackenedHalo Think you’re stirring the pot, but this is such a bad take, IMO. It doesn’t matter to me how powerful the tech is, as long as the games are good. Nobody could argue that Switch titles are sub-par. The best Switch games are probably still better than the best PS5 games at this stage, and bear comparison with the best of the PS4 library.
I still play games on DS, PSP and 3DS, not to mention 16-bit titles, so maybe I’m atypical, but I’ll always put gameplay over graphics, sound and frame rate. Sure, there are Switch games that could run better, but there are few cases where it actively prevents me enjoying them.
Pah. I reckon only one in ten of those games are any good…
… so that’s 670 games or so. Gulp.
I’ve probably got about 50 on my wish list by now - and I gave up trying to keep track of the eShop about a year ago. I will never play all the games I’d like to play, but equally I will never run out of having something worth trying.
Going to see how far I can get in Resident Evil VII before I wuss out. Perfect for this weekend, and I’ve “enjoyed” the first 40 minutes or so, even if I keep feeling like there’s someone behind me…
Delighted by this news, and a bit surprised to get it in such a low-key way. Death’s Door is one of the most raves about indies of the year, and I kind of thought we wouldn’t get it on Switch without it appearing in a Direct. This is great!
Hmm, all this talk has made me want to play that Metroid game by MercurySteam. Yes, Samus Returns, that’s the one. Might fire that up, as I can’t get to my Switch at the moment
@westman98 Only 200,000 for week one of Fifa 22? That’s interesting. Not that it really matters, but with a week two drop-off that means Metroid Dread actually has a chance of top spot next week.
Does this mean someone else can make a PES? And put it in Switch? EA’s half-hearted Fifas are one thing, but Konami hasn’t only not even bothered, it’s even sabotaged its own football game for the platforms it still supports. Sigh.
I want a fan-made MGS, please. I’d throw in Suikoden too, but fortunately that’s already in the works (kind of).
@Daniel36 Lol! You’ve clearly touched a nerve here. It’s almost like some people feel self-conscious about enjoying fan service and feel like they’re being judged when someone else doesn’t.
Fans of fan service, relax. Not everybody has to like it
Game Pass has gone nuts, so I might have to put the Nintendo consoles down for a bit. Really want to try Scarlet Nexus, and might give Marvel’s Avengers a go. Then there’s AI: The Somnium Files, Astra Ascending and a whole bunch of other stuff I’ve been meaning to get to like FFXIII and Nier Automata.
I will probably end up playing ten minutes on two of them…
I like it. Or, more to the point, I like the square one with Bandai above Namco, as that’s a more typical shape for a speech bubble. The flat one doesn’t really work for me. And the tag line is awful. Just awful. Glad they’re restricting that for corporate materials.
But the square one, I like. Far prefer it to the orange blob.
Sad for Lost Judgment. I know this is a Nintendo site, and we will probably never get any Yakuza titles or spin-offs on Switch, but this is a series that deserves so much more love than it gets.
On the final map in Donkey Kong Country Returns, so hoping to finish that this week, at my usual rate of a level or two a day. I hear the final boss is a doozy, though, so we’ll see.
I’ll just point out that DQXI came out on the 3DS. That’s not even the New 3DS. There’s no reason why a version of DQXII won’t come out on Switch, especially given the install base.
Still chipping away at Donkey Kong Country Returns on 3DS, and still blown away by how pretty it is. Do a couple of levels every other day or so, although the temple stages can slow me down.
Also fired up another former Wii title on 3DS the other day: Xenoblade Chronicles 3D. Just want to see what it was like but now I’m looking forward to another 100 hours of that!
No one has mentioned Valkyria Chronicles yet. I kind of forget how many RPG franchises that Sega is sitting on, even when you don’t include Atlus. But my first thought was of another non-tactical Shining title.
Pokemon Picross on 3DS. Isn’t that what everyone is playing?
Also started Horace on Switch. I don’t love the gameplay - I’m not that nostalgic for the 8-bit era - but I can’t deny that it’s a very charming overall package.
@Bunkerneath You’d be surprised. I beat all the shrines, plus Ganon, 44/47 side quests and found over 200 Korok seeds. Completion percentage: 44.7%. Pfft…
Amuses me how so many VGM composers pick the Eighties as their favourite decade for music. Obviously makes sense, as they’re electronic music specialists, but still tickles me
@Mando44646 Has 2021 been a wash? I think it’s been great. Bravely Default 2, MH Rise and MH Stories 2, Skyward Sword HD, Great Ace Attorney, Neo TWEWY, Ys IX - and Metroid Dread and SMTV still to come. Best year for retail releases in Switch’s life, IMO, apart from maybe 2017.
I’ve heard some good buzz about this, so happy to see this come to Switch. If Nintendo isn’t going to give us the GBA Fire Emblems via Switch Online, then at least good indies can fill the void.
About five hours through Boyfriend Dungeon, so should beat that this weekend, from the sounds of things. Feels a bit like a Flash version of Hades, but I’m enjoying it anyway.
Other than that, I’m chipping away at Donkey Kong Country Returns, a level or two at a time. Still amazed at how pretty it is.
@Beaucine Good response! Thanks for that. I’m not sure Quake is for me, but obviously it flicks a lot of switches for others. Not convinced it is a 10 - but I totally respect your and anyone else’s right to say it’s a 10.
@6thHorizon I don’t think Quake deserved a 10 even when it was new! It’s an important game and fundamental in the genre, paving the way for better games to come. But this score, especially in 2021, doesn’t exactly leave much room for those. What does Half-Life 2 get, 11/10?
Reviews are subjective, though. One person’s 10 is someone else’s … 8? Maybe a 7…
Finally finished FFVI, so I need something more action-based now. Donkey Kong Country Returns is really hitting the spot. It’s incredible how good it looks on 3DS - it’s honestly prettier than a lot of Switch first-party titles, especially with the 3D.
More representation is good for everybody, straight, gay, queer, trans, whatever. It can only enrich and broaden storytelling. Despite all that, I am wondering how long it will take before the comments get locked this time. Hopefully that won’t be necessary?
Very close to wrapping up Final Fantasy VI, I think. It might be my favourite 16-bit RPG - although I’ll have to give Phantasy Star IV a try at some point.
Haven’t picked up my Switch in a while, so I want to get back to it. Paper Mario, Divinity: Original Sin 2, MH Rise and Skyward Sword are all wondering where I’ve gone...
Kinda thought we’d left this behind already. Moral panic over GTA3, and before that it was Mortal Kombat and Night Trap, before that it was video nasties and before that it was D&D satanism. Before that it was novels - reading was actually deemed bad for people!
It’ll be something else in another 20 years. And all the time, people are getting smarter at dealing with an increasingly complicated world.
Edit: Oh yeah! Rock’n’roll, in all its forms, came in between D&D and novels...
Think this was the most interesting game featured in the Indie Direct ... the first time. Second time around, it still looks really cool. Great art, great genre - all comes down to execution now. Looking forward to the first reviews. Getting CrossCode vibes - so fingers crossed.
Need something to knock the Let’s Gos off that list... I suspect Diamond and Pearl will come close, and Splatoon 3 is in with a shout. Not sure what makes Metroid Dread a success - five million? - but I don’t expect to see it there.
Wonder where Minecraft and MH Rise would be in an overall list.
Edit: just noting that while writing my reply, two posts above me also predict five million sales for Metroid Dread! Confirmed!
@Thrallherd Yes, Switch Lite sales are included in the overall figures. I’m sure Nintendo will have a breakdown somewhere!
No surprise that sales are slowing down, especially given that there are new home consoles out to compete for shoppers’ attention. Those Switch numbers are holding up pretty well, considering. Game Boy family sales are definitely doable. I think DS is just a step too far - unless Nintendo just doesn’t release a new console for another eight years.
Monster Hunter Rise for me - but I fully expect it to drop behind Neo: TWEWY and SMT V once I’m done. And possibly Metroid Dread. Skyward Sword, maybe. Overboard looks cool too. Ys IX is on my Christmas list.
Whatever else happens, 2021 has already been a much better year for new games than last year.
Phew. That’s my main reaction. This is the sequel I didn’t really want, as TWEWY is one of my all-time favourite games. Top 3, probably. Struggled to see how Squenix could make a sequel that didn’t drop the ball in some way. Maybe this won’t be as fresh and spectacular as the original, and maybe it is, but I’m glad it doesn’t appear to have tainted it.
I don’t need this at launch. But I will definitely get it.
@Rambler Oof, side-scrolling shoot ‘em up, to me, is something like R-Type. I quite like run & gun as a description for Contra-likes. Though in my day we called them platform shooters. Maybe.

Recommend. Would play again.
