Sure, this week might mark the release of the Grand Theft Auto trilogy, Shin Megami Tensei V, the Zelda Game & Watch and even The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition on other platforms, but don't forget about the return of BioWare's legendary RPG classic, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
It's out today on the Nintendo Switch and has been brought across by Aspyr - the same team that ported Star Wars: Republic Commando, Star Wars Episode I: Racer, and the Star Wars Jedi Knight games.
It'll set you back $14.99 or your regional equivalent and has a file size of around 12.0 GB, according to its Switch eShop game page. It's got us wondering, will you be adding it to your Switch home menu? Vote in our poll and leave a comment down below.
Also keep an eye out for our review of KOTOR on Switch, which should be going live later today.

I might check this out someday, RPGs really aren't my thing, though.
I’ve played a couple hours today, it plays very well, I definitely recommend it!
By far the best Switch port Aspyr has done, by a longshot. The other star wars ports had quite a few issues but I’ve had none so far!
I’ve been looking to play this for awhile and won’t be getting to remake so I’ll be picking this one up.
Just picked it up, waiting on the download now. This is one where I've played the first few hours of it on Steam, but I think having a portable version will make it a lot easier to commit, much like other games I've bought on Switch despite owning on other platforms.
I started this on mobile/tablet - also an Aspyr port - but didn’t get that far because touch controls. They weren’t terrible, but it was just a bit clunky. Quite tempted to double dip.
One of the best, if not THE best, Star Wars games made so far. Happy to have this portable and on Switch, although I noticed about 2-3 years ago it was also on mobile. Aspyr just released KOTOR 2 on mobile this year too, so hopefully it’ll be on Switch in the future as well.
When I originally played this, I was coming from the MMO Star Wars Galaxies (pre-CU), and I loved every bit of that, but wasn’t very story heavy. This was an awesome change to that; and my only gripe was the lacking animations compared to SWGs “acrobatics”.
I have a question I hope someone here can answer. If I buy this, will EA receive even a penny of my money?
I know limited run games is gonna get their paws on this, so I'll wait til then to get it physically.
Down the line. SMT V gets all my attention for the time being.
@CharlieGirl I was thinking the same thing or best buy physical from lrg
@StormtheFrontier no, they own the license deal with Disney to produce SW games forward, but since this, the sequel and the remake are based on existing titles that were made and produced before Disney even had the SW ownership. Aspyr bought the rights to reproduce this and KOTOR 2 in various formats, including the remake. So while BioWare made the game originally, it was long before EA bought BioWare, and long before EA had the license agreement.
I know it’s all confusing as heck, but that’s the general gist of it. EA wasn’t licensed then, didn’t produce or make it then, so have no ties to it in the here and now.
Edit - Another note, BioWare originally licensed this from LucasArts back then, and Lucas owned it then. If anything, only Disney would get royalties at this point, but even that I’m not positive on.
I've always wanted to try this game, so I'll most likely be getting it at some point in the future, just not right now.
@E_Gadds_Garage I would nominate Civilization VI as one of the most amazing ports the Switch has had. People overlook it because it's not the most graphically impressive game out there, but Aspyr earned my eternal respect with that. Turning a massive 4X beast, the epitome of keyboard/mouse gaming, into a console title without losing any functionality was a stunning achievement on their part. The Switch honestly struggles to run Civ VI, especially in the late game, but I sincerely doubt anyone could have ported it better than Aspyr did.
It's thanks to their work on Civ that I'm confident KOTOR is worth my money. I'm not buying it immediately as I'm completely swamped with new games right now, but it's going high up on my wishlist.
It's a REALLY great game. But without KOTOR2 and the announcement of KOTOR3 there is no hype for me to play again
I've been waiting for this for SO. LONG.
I bought it on iPad years ago because it just wasn't available on any other platform besides the original Xbox and PC, and at the time I didn't have PC. Touch controls sucked. Bought an m-Fi controller but....eh. Just couldn't play it on a tablet.
This is 1080 docked / 720p handheld, it's wide-screen (finally), has HD rumble, and plays very smooth. And it looks surprisingly good on Switch OLED in handheld. The smaller screen really helps these older games like GTA and KOTOR.
It may not be as pretty as modern games, and the sound may not be as high quality, but I'll be darned if this game isn't every bit as fun as anything else that's released in 2021.
This is a CLASSIC. I can't believe I got GTA San Andreas with new textures and lighting, and Star Wars KOTOR in HD wide-screen, on a hybrid handheld system the same day
Pretty sure KOTOR II will be next at this rate. It's developed by Obsidian, not Bioware, and isn't quite as good from what I hear, but it's still a classic and would definitely be welcome.
I'm not a Star Wars guy
I'm very pleased that all the Star Wars games that didn't hit nintendo in the mid 2000's are finally releasing on a Nintendo console. Now we need Starfighter/Jedi Starfighter/Race Revenge!
Looks bad... horribly outdated game
I would like a physical copy of it.
@TheBigK me either. Love the universe and space... but star was is a crock of fantasy poo...
I’ve never had the chance to play KOTOR and was pleased to see it announced for Switch. The force seems strong with this one 😁
I too will wait for the physical release.
Great, hopefully it gets a physical release with the needed patches some reviewers have pointed out (text box too large and some other small things). Can we get Jade Empire next? Everyone forgets that one.
1-I love this at full screen with an increased resolution.
2-I hate the weird giant YOU ARE IN COMBAT bubble tutorial thing. That's gotta be a bug.
3-Mission is a treasure and must be protected with my life! Or Z's. Whoever gets there first.
4-The brightness and sound are both tuned weird. Scenes get loud or quiet and then way too dark at strange times.
All in all, it's one small patch away from the best way to play KotOR.
@Dm9982 EA's license is expiring soon if it hasn't expired already. LucasArts is back and they've confirmed Ubisoft is working on a new Star Wars game, and we'll likely hear about more projects in the near future. Between these recent ports, the KOTOR remake announcement, and EA losing its grip on the license, I'm hoping we'll be seeing a renaissance of Star Wars games this decade. I'm kind of sad I never really tried many of them outside of the Lego Star Wars games and a couple others back during the old golden age of the early 2000s, so I'd love to experience another era like that.
Does anyone know if the level up and double class glitches still work?
Think I've quadruple-dipped with this. Best version I've played so far. Hope they follow it with KOTOR 2 and Jade Empire. Like others I've enjoyed the IOS versions but not the touch screen controls...
The remaster will probably push me over the tipping point to finally getting a PS5.
@Onett you can just turn that off in the options
@VIIIAxel I concur and hope the same. Unfortunately EA made the license extremely stagnant in the gaming world. Fallen Order is good, but I’ve never been a Battlefront fan, so those were wasted on me - although I will admit they were pretty to look at. That was always gonna be the fear with granting license to one company over a long period though. Without different talent looking at the license and coming up with different ideas, you’re gonna be stuck in an endless loop. So hopefully moving forward we can see more Star Wars adventures in various different genres.
I couldn’t find the aim and shoot/ attack buttons for blaster on Switch controller. I thought L is to aim and R is to shoot/ attack but it just pauses the game with instructions text. I ended up quitting the game right at the start. I couldn’t find the controls screen that tells me which buttons are to aim and attack during combat.
This was a must buy for me. Getting it on a console in widescreen is a big plus for me, and the original version is a very old PC game these days. It's probably the best Star Wars game IMO. I know we are getting a remake, but considering how that is being rewritten, this is the way I want to play it again.
@Don It's a turn-based RPG, the game tells you before your first battle that you don't aim your weapon. L is to pause, the command window at the bottom left is where you choose your attacks.
I consider myself a hardcore Star Wars fan going back to 1983, and yet somehow, I've never played this before - or any Star Wars game that came out after 2003's Jedi Academy, for that matter. I've mostly kept my Star Wars gaming to the 1990s era library.
I'm definitely getting this once I somehow get past that brutal final boss on Metroid Dread. I don't start new games until I finish my current ones.
@JasmineDragon
I loved Civilization VI on the switch (have it on pc also)
Its soo well done one switch with the added touch support.
The minor lesser gtaphics doesnt bother me at all. Still looks close to pc.
Holding off for the remake, not going to snub it for some minor rewrites or retcons. I wonder where the franchise could be if it weren't for these inflexible diehards that call themselves fans.
I'll echo what others have said. Day one for a physical.
Same here I am waiting for the physical version!
Never played it back in the day so no nestalgia for me, plus look at those awful graphics so I think il pass and wait for the remake
Been playing for 3 hours now and it's just wonderful
I always wanted to give it a try, but now that I've watched Dune, I am not sure I can return to a Star Wars thing. Somewhat a shame, since so many new things are coming out for the franchise, movie and series wise, but ah well...
I played a couple hours, I completed it years ago and had a blast. I spend all my time second guessing my class/points choices tho, lol.
If you turn subtitles off you’re gonna have some weird moments where there’s no voice acting and the subtitles don’t come on so your looking at someone looking at you and nothing being said.
Great Game, but i have it on PC, so i am not double picking.
Ah, these polls finally get an "of course, but not right away" option.
Picked "It's unlikely" because I have it on PC and xbox.
Should have an option for I already have it when doing old games like this.
@JasmineDragon I hope Humankind goes next!
Disney killed any enthusiasm I had for star wars. So I only bother with star wars games I have nostalgia for.
@Krull controls are fine on switch. Takes a little bit of time to get used to, but once you do…. It’s such a great game and the port is so wel done. Love it!
@VIIIAxel
Thank you for the tip. I actually didn’t realize it’s a RPG. This is my first time playing this game.
I was waiting to read the NintendoLife review actually...
@Teksetter dude I was gonna type that! 😆
Provided it's got nice cover art though - some physical editions lately have been less than great to be frank.
Awesome game & def a classic! Played thru one time each as light side then dark side on the 360 back in the day. Will probably DL this for Switch, but maybe gonna wait till February or so when they'll likely mark it down 50%.
I bought this years ago when it was originally released on PC and loved it. It's the game that got me into role playing games in general. $15, is, I think, the right price for a Switch port. That's only $5 more than the PC version is currently selling for at GoG.com.
@Dm9982 I see. Thanks for the info.
Loved the game back in the day, got all the books. This game is one of the best entries in the entire Star Wars franchise - no matter the medium.
Still, hard pass as the remake is already announced.
Love the game, but I've played this version enough. I'm holding out for the PS5 remake. The portable factor just isn't enough of a sell.
I didn't play this when it originally came out, so looking forward to picking it up. Just waiting for reviews.
I was so excited for this but it doesn't actually seem to be out yet. I can't find a single store that is carrying it. I assume it will get a full release eventually as part of a double pack like the other 2000s era Star Wars games. PErsonally I am hoping for a Kotor 1 and 2 double pack.
@DumbElder
I'll confess the phrase seemed so cliche, as I typed it I scrolled the screen up to check for fear of parroting other people! Not seeing that many, I left it in.
Honestly, the force does seem strong in this game to me, kind of like those 90s Timothy Zahn novels or the Dark Horse SW comics from around then. And it's just the type of game I'd much prefer to buy physical.
@Teksetter yeah, I find the more expansive the game is - like epic story, deep word to explore - the more it feels like it has to be physical.
Like a good book in that sense. I would never download a RPG I think.
This might be my favorite game of all time. I still have my Xbox copy, like brand new, and it was that game who made me buy a Xbox One X at the time - no kidding - when it was announced as a retro-compatible game.
I did play it again on it, and it was magnificent to see my beloved game going for the glory of HD graphics.
Now, a portable version ? 16/9 (the game is still 4/3 on Xbox) but no garbage touch control (like the cellphone version) ? Choice of langages ? Off course I'm in, once again !
@E_Gadds_Garage I'm curious , have you played any other version?
not trying to be that person but this port has plenty of issues any player of the Xbox or Steam versions ought to be noticing by now.
feel free to reference my rant comment here:
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2021/11/that-large-combat-text-box-in-star-wars-kotor-on-switch-is-intended#comment6663737
@creativeusernamehere Original xbox, and steam. Steam just never felt right to me, probably because I was using mouse and keyboard controls… But I loved the xbox version, played it so much when I was younger, my disc barely works anymore!
You bring up some good points in your post, I haven’t noticed the missing audio yet, that needs to be fixed... I did notice the title screen movie was missing right away, not a huge deal to me. I also noticed that the save timer continues when the switch is in sleep mode. I emailed support yesterday about the save files and text box size. Thanks for reminding me of the audio clips though, I will mention that as well.
@E_Gadds_Garage Good stuff. I keep my og Xbox Disc well protected. I too have the steam version and despite mods and all that it never felt right to me as well. I must be a filthy casual but the KOTOR games feel soooo much better on a controller than KB/M.
Lets hope the Switch port gets patched up soon.
