The Monster Hunter franchise continues to demonstrate its monumental success with the release of Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, a major expansion for Switch and PC that introduces new monsters, weapons, story elements, and more. We love it here at Nintendo Life and called it "a success in multiple ways" in our official review, with "enough that's new or different to make it a must-have expansion for Monster Hunter Rise fans".

It seems the game has also proved to be a commercial success, as Capcom has announced that the expansion has already surpassed 2 million shipments worldwide for Switch and PC. In addition, it states that the main Monster Hunter Rise game has reached an astounding 10 million units shipped. As for the franchise as a whole, the Monster Hunter series has now reached cumulative sales of over 84 million worldwide, although a significant chunk of this can be attributed to Monster Hunter World, which achieved an all-time record for Capcom of 21 million units shipped.
In addition to the major Sunbreak expansion, Capcom has previously detailed further Monster Hunter Rise plans for the rest of 2022 and beyond. Free content updates will be provided in August, Fall, and Winter, with more due to arrive in 2023.

Since I have friends on both platforms, and I know that this is game I WILL thoroughly enjoy for multiple hundreds of hours, I actually bought both base game and expansion twice, lol. And so far, I don't regret it for a single second
its so worth it. its one of the best DLCs I ever played to be honest. Monster Hunter Rise was to easy and to small but wie Sunbreak the game is huge and also the difficulty increased a bit (so far still a bit too easy even on master rank).
@NDragon1412 Same, I have friends on both Switch and PC, and bought both games and the expansion for both, but the Switch is my main version so I'm progressing that first. Loving every second of both version but I already knew I would. Love this franchise.
@jojobar Things start ramping up noticably in MR4, at least imo. But yeah the difficulty curve is more gradual than what those of us who played previous games may be used to.
@NDragon1412 I think I'm going to do the same thing. I mainly play on PC but I do love me some handheld Monster Hunter...
Is referring to "units shipped" a common practice with digital-only games? I thought maybe there was a physical release I missed at first, but outside of the collector's edition or the dual pack (which are just codes in a box), I haven't seen one. The article does state PC is included in that total though, which is mainly where my confusion comes from. I know that definitely didn't get any sort of physical release.
I haven't picked up Sunbreak yet as I'm currently swamped with my backlog and trying to avoid buying anything else until after I get/finish Xenoblade 3, but I do intend to pick it up at some point! I put around 100 hours into Rise and it's one of my favorite Switch games, so I am excited to check out the expansion once I have time.
Also really enjoying this DLC and its the only game i choose to play online with other party members. As someone who isnt a MH vet but has done all base game hunts i still struggle with the crafting of armours and gems, smelding pot etc. It still overwhelms me. I usually just chuck on an armour thats resistant to a monsters element. Ive yet to mess about with sockets, gems, layered armours, loadouts but feel i really should get on it to help my later game builds.
So glad Sunbreak is getting the love it deserves, I've rolled credits & thought it was phenomenal! Loving every moment of it, especially playing with people online. Happy hunting everyone!
Definitely deserved.
Game is fire. It's good to see it doing well.
@DreamlandGem wow finished it already? Just key quest requirements or 100% all quests
@Lord Haha yeah, in my defense I booked time off work just to play it so I've done nothing but hunt for the past 4 days! I've finished all the story quests & just working my way through everything else now
I still need to get this game and the expansion. I won't pay more than $60 for the lot, though.
So just curious, but is that 21 million for World for both original World AND the Iceborne expansion, or just base World? If its the former, than I think overall that Rise is selling better in general than World did. Base World was on PS4 and Xbox and PC, and has sold for several years now. Rise/Sunbreak is only on two platforms (Switch and PC), and in just a year has already sold over half of what World/Iceborne has? If this is the case, I think that Rise will eventually outsell World, which would be a pretty incredible feat.
Of course, this assumes that gen 6 doesn't get announced and come out in the meantime (World 2 or whatever). Both games are tremendous fun, though (I own Rise base on Switch and PC, Sunbreak on Switch, and World/Iceborne on PS4, PS5, and PC...I'm such a Hunter addict...lol).
@ReaperMelia "Shipped" got my attention as well considering it's a digital expansion, unless they are talking about only the physical complete game w/ both the base game and the dlc? Even if the expansion is only a physical code they could still ship it in a box or just as a card.
But since this is NL I'm going to assume "shipped" actually means "sold". 🤷
@IronMan30 Is literally $60 with the deal right now.
@Faruko no, it really isn't. The lowest it got was $70.
Loving the game so far and the increase in difficulty makes it all the better, and the added switch skills made me learned how to play all over again
@Highlar I think base World sold 15M or something by the time Iceborne came out. I doubt Rise will outsell it though it would be awesome if it does as that would mean Capcom's two biggest selling games are MH games.
Great numbers especially considering this game is only on 2 platforms.
@ReaperMelia This was my first thought as well. I always understood "shipped" as referring to a physical product being delivered, unless society has once again decided that words can mean whatever you want it to.
Rise was decent but Sunbreak seems to fix every complaint I had and is quickly becoming one of the highlights in the series.
