Re: Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night Just Got A New Character Update

@Takoda it's not just the animations for me but the whole look of the game that's jank. My hope for the sequel is that it uses fully 2d sprites.

Ayami Kojima's brilliant art and character designs were not intended to be rendered in 3d, and I wasn't surprised by IGA's development diaries about struggling with different shaders and filters to try and make the game look alright.

Re: Sonic Origins' Story Mode Snubs Tails & Knuckles

James696

This doesn't bother me nearly as much as whether or not Origins will remaster or even include MJ's contributions to the Sonic 3 soundtrack. That game just isn't the same without bangers like 'Carnival Night Zone' or 'IceCap Zone'

I know that there was a dispute for some years over the rights and royalties to that music. Origins's trailer not even acknowledging its soundtrack has me thinking it's still trapped in courtroom hell (which come to think of it would be a fantastic classic Sonic stage) but is there any hope?

Re: Sonic Origins Rated In Australia

James696

@blindsquarel From someone who grew up with the originals, Sonic Mania is the ultimate 2d sonic experience. It takes what worked from each of those games, learns from what didn't work, and has some of the best level design in the series.

Re: Sonic Origins Rated In Australia

James696

I hope those 'enhancements' boil down to more than just wide-screen emulation.

M2 have already released the definitive versions of Sonic 1 and 2 for the Switch eshop. Unless this collection includes those versions, and makes similar refinements to Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic CD, then I don't see the value in it.

Re: Poll: What's The Best 3D Sonic Game?

James696

The 2d games aren't perfect either. I have a lot of nostalgia for the first 3 games and I love Mania, but that's mostly for the music and the art. The speed and slippy momentum of those games has always held them back imo

Re: Feature: Best Nintendo Switch Run And Gun Games

Cuphead and Mega Man are classics and some of my all time favourites, but imo Huntdown is the top choice. With its difficulty options, it's a bit more accessible to new players and those anxious of paying for something that's too hard.

Re: Review: Indivisible - An Enjoyable And Beautiful RPG Hybrid With A Few Rough Edges

James696

This is an 8/10 game for me. The combat system is fast, fluid, and unlike anything I've played before.

There's another important reason why you should support this developer. They made a labour of love in Skullgirls and supported the hell out of it for years after release, engaging with the fans for feedback and for ideas on what additional content they wanted. In spite of all that, the publisher still hasn't paid them years worth of owed royalties: these guys deserve to succeed.

Re: Panzer Dragoon: Remake Will Patch In Saori Kobayashi's Remixed Soundtrack

James696

This is the best version of the original Panzer Dragoon. With the other ports: the ps2 isn't faithful, the xbox is faithful and higher res and runs at a higher framerate BUT postprocessed into a dark and blurry mess, and each pc release has its own quirks.

As for the remake: the game runs at a stable framerate, no bugs that I can find, a reticule that's more useful than the one in the original and more in line with modern shooters (although I wish the original one was there simply as a nostalgia option). My only quibbles are the price and that it doesn't include a faithful port of the original.

Re: Review: Panzer Dragoon: Remake - Doesn’t Quite Nail The Landing

James696

The controls are 1:1 to the feel of the original, which I've played the hell out of since the Saturn's UK launch.

As for the short length: it's a 90s on-rails shooter. The replayability in these games comes from chasing higher scores on different difficulties. The only exception I can think of that was packed with extra content was the House of the Dead Dreamcast port - and that was full-priced.

Re: Review: Devil May Cry 2 - The Series Nadir Isn't Worth Bothering With On Switch

James696

@Anri02 There's a misconception that Devil May Cry 3 was the result of Capcom bringing back developers from the original game. The truth is that the people behind 2 simply went back to the drawing board, studied what made the first game successful, and leaned more towards its design philosophies.

Side note: it's still bananas to me that Capcom didn't even ask Kamiya to return for the sequels.
