"Furthermore, on the Switch there are some lengthy loading times between losing a ship and reappearing at a checkpoint, which can interfere with your flow — especially in the game’s more intense moments."
This. The only remedy I see to fix this in the short term is for me to git gud and not lose a ship lol. The 15 sec. approx. load time was very disruptive especially when you are fighting stage boss and eager to jump back in and try again.
I think the difficulty was set correctly. Easy in the village , then becomes difficult in the high rank gathering hall. I like MHRise better than world. Been playing since MHFU.
@Brummieendo90 Sad to hear that. Maybe a friend should teach you how its played effectively. MH World and this one are the most accessible /easiest versions of MH. The older titles will give you a heart attack then hehe.
@BenAV I agree. What i meant is this game is not meant to be cheap. Its a full premium game and considered like THE train simulation/sim city game of Japan.
Majority of the games I played, I have not finished. However, the games that I play a ton, are games like Monster Hunter, wherein you have a main campaign to "finish" (but totally optional), but tons more to do to 100% the game.
Finishing Dark Souls once is one of my personal gaming achievements and Shiren The Wanderer Final Dungeon. Feels great to finish them. Many other games I lose the drive to finish them since they are no longer fun to finish to the end.
I do not think i have ever finished a JRPG ever or any RPG. I tend to gravitate to strategy games like Starcraft or Dota 2, that are session based and not story based. More a kin to fighting games or sports games. Now that I recall, I was very into Tekken and street fighter, and Command and Conquer and many other RTS games.
My personal goal is to 1cc Crimzon Clover (a shmup). I am hoping it happens within the year lol.

Looking to pick up Turrican Flashback. Also just picked up Ninja Jajamaru Collection. I got it for "Ninja Jajamaru: The great Yokai Battle", but I am surprisingly addicted to the Ninja Jajamaru-kun NES original game too haha.
Was able to play some games of Gigamax. I think the appeal to the game is of course its novelty, but what was not pointed out by anyone is, the sound track of Gigamax is arguably the best among the 3 games. I can see it as a fun party game , "hangout and get wrecked" session while sound tripping to the Zuntata music while speed killing cosmic beings in space. The music is epic i would say even more so than SI Extreme.
Also, its not just a mere multiplayer version of the original SI, it transitions to different alien patterns and mid boss ( ufo) and major bosses with ginormous HP to fight.
So add those all up, I would say Gigamax is good (but not as a solo game because the bosses are hard to kill alone due to high HP).
P.S.: hook up the switch/ TV to a decent sound system like a soundbar with subwoofer( and not just the crappy switch speakers or flat screen Tv)to feel the epicness of the music and sound. Just want to emphasize The "Gigamax" here is the music and it really makes up for the simple graphics. And I have been learning music is a super important part of the shmup experience.
Picked up a physical copy from a local game store yesterday. Enjoying Space Invaders Extreme a lot and I would say, as new fan of shmups, its worth it since I dont think I will be playing all the older games in the invincible collection. New found appreciation for shmups and I willing to pay full price. These games dont get old and i can see myself playing these games for many years to come.
I love the switch since its a real hybrid. I play it docked, portable mode, table top mode local ad hoc for 2 players. If we are talking about pure handheld , i still prefer the 3ds overall.
@TG16_IS_BAE Trick is to find someone to hunt with so they can teach you the ropes. Then cooperation is what will hook you. Then you will find your groove and enjoy the combat. Then you will enjoy carving the monster and enjoy crafting and then wearing that armor you worked hard for. Once you become proficient you can take on the monsters alone and enjoy the "dance" with the monster. The act of fighting the monster and the rewards it gives is what is most pleasurable about it(aside from hunting with your friends).
Just like how sports games are, they play basketball over and over. But it is not a "grind".
MH is an "Action Hunting Game". The act of hunting is fun. If you don't find that fun, you still won't like MH Rise.
@TG16_IS_BAE It wont. Still gonna be a core MH game for sure. The grind is not really a grind, its part of why its fun, the actual combat is not button mashing. Its more like a fighting game versus a big monster. mastering your weapons move set and crafting the perfect setup is what makes it so fun. The grind is the fun. Just like the combat in a fighting game is what makes fighting games fun. Its not your generic MMO. It isn't a grind in that sense right?
Got this on sale for Switch just last night. Been playing it and its fun and challenging. I like it that you need to plan and think about what character is best to use for each situation. You cannot just rely on pure twitch reaction, you will need to know the speed and mechanics of each character. I can see why its an acquired taste. I look forward to playing it more. I am happy with my purchase.
There's nothing "cheap" about Dark Souls game play. I am sure you know that. Sure he can play easy mode but to call DS cheap without playing it is an unfair comment towards the game.
You lost me at " I’ve never played Dark Souls and I’d absolutely love to because by all accounts the lore is brilliant, but I just don’t have the time to put up with all its cheap tricks"
Kids, the original Toe and earl is considered to be one of the early games inspired by Roguelikes or today called Roguelites. So I will be getting this for sure as I love all things roguelike. From rogue, to nethack, Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup, and the best middle ground for me, Shiren the wanderer.
Not a good sign...I use the 3ds and Wii U browser when I need to look up some guides while playing a game. Thats pretty basic. Its like a smart phone not having built in calculator.
I think is great news! Cloud is really famous and is a great addition to the roster.
People who say he isn't significant and is for playstation fans only is bull crap.
I bet tons of you kids never even played Duck Hunt and yet you appreciate the character.
Cloud was the first big ass sword fighter I have seen and you can see Shulk is heavily inspired by Cloud. Cloud is the original bad ass Great Sword wielder.
