@SirPrimalform Locking games to their intended frame-rate with no slowdown would be fine but I doubt I only speak for myself when I say that I'll gladly take some wonky animations in exchange for a game like Star Fox 2 having a higher frame-rate.
Frontiers sounds like Sonic Adventure on steroids, so I would expect Big the Cat and most all of the Sonic cast to appear.
Honestly, it's just a meme at this point to hate on 3D Sonic games. Yes, Adventure and Adventure 2 still hold up well as a fun experience. Sonic Heroes is extremely underrated. (Better than the Adventure games in some ways imo) Unleashed is alright. Colors and Generations are awesome games. Lost World is alright. A lot of the spin-offs are awesome. Even Sonic Forces isn't terrible.
And for those who say "Well the 2D Sonic games are still better!!", they always seemed to ignore all the great 2D Sonic games on GBA, DS and 3DS anyway... almost like they just want to complain about things.
If it weren't for the massive misstep of Sonic '06, I don't believe there would be nearly the amount of disdain for 3D Sonic today.
This game would likely sell best on Switch. If they can get the game running on Switch without too many compromises, I think they will. And no, not every developer are technical wizards like Saber Interactive or Panic Button. Also, a game can look deceptively "low-tech", like an HD-2D game that mimics pixel art, but can actually be very taxing on hardware or have engine compatibility issues.
Anyway, I hope Konami suddenly gets "inspired" to release a Suikoden collection on consoles, similar to how they dropped the Castlevania collection in time for Bloodstained. Lol
It could make those who aren't familiar with the series believe Chrono Cross isn't a great game and skip it.
I came here to read the reasoning behind the review score, (having already known the game itself is great, of course) then logged in to speak my mind, because it was the first review score that popped up when I google searched news on the release.
Many who may have been interested in the game could just see that score, having no prior knowledge of the game itself, decide against it, and deprive themselves due to that perception.
Regardless of whether it's a relatively bare-bones HD remaster, it's an 8/10 at the very least.
Similar to the Final Fantasy remasters.
Not to mention, the reviewer jumped the gun and reviewed the game without it's day one patch for some reason; those who actually purchase this game will play it with the patch.
They also complained about mostly trivial things like having to go into the menu to toggle between the original and new graphics.
If it were some utter hack job of a port, that would be a different story but obviously that's not the case.
In no way does this remaster, as described here, warrant giving Chrono Cross a 6/10.
The only concerning note is the frame-rate dropping at times but, again, they should have waited for the day one patch, which is how everyone else will play it, if they suspect that may correct the issue, before they published the review.
@ChaosBadger777 I have ZERO doubt a Switch port of Cyberpunk 2077 would be far better than current PS4/Xbox One because Panic Button or Saber Interactive would actually spend time optimizing the game to run well on Switch instead of treating the console like an afterthought, blatantly ripping off their largest market of gamers by lying to their face and rushing the game out in time for Christmas sales.
Doom Eternal again proves, as I've always said, that ANY PS4/Xbox One game could be adequately ported to Switch IF the developer puts enough effort into optimization, rewriting code, etc.
Some publishers/developers just don't want to spend adequate time and money on developing Switch ports, unfortunately.
I'm excited. Check out GameXplain's full analysis on youtube. It's looking like a true return to form for the series.
The only major problems I still see are that some of the party members look to be generic unnamed Bowser minions (which makes sense if they were part of Bowser's army, escaping the castle) and we still don't know if these partners join you in battle. (though we have seen the "explorer Toad" standing on the battle screen with Mario, but it could just be some kind of tutorial)
We also don't know much about the leveling-up/progression/rewards system but I doubt they'll drop the ball on that after getting so much else right, especially since this was the biggest core problem with the last two games, making battles completely pointless.
@Dringo Interesting. I may have to check out Sea Of Thieves soon.
As for their other games, Perfect Dark Zero and Kameo were disappointments, I never played Grabbed By The Ghoulies but I recall some people calling it one of the worst horror games ever made, and everything else being very poorly received by fans. (aside from some GBA games)
The quality of these games may be arguable but it's fair to say the studio never reached the same heights as with Nintendo during this era. With games like Nuts and Bolts, Viva Piñata and the Kinect games, were these projects chosen by Rare or assigned by Microsoft?
@Dringo I wasn't aware anyone still played that game. The last I heard, most people tried it, were quickly tired of the shallow gameplay/world and never looked back. And if Rare's legacy was passed down, why was their post-Nintendo games so sub-par? Microsoft meddling?
Great game. A reminder of how great Rare was, and could have still been, before all the talent left the company.
It's unfortunate that Rare's split with Nintendo may have been due to professional/cultural rivalry with their Japanese heads. Miyamoto certainly wasn't very fond of them.
And even if Nintendo had fully bought Rare instead of selling their stake to Microsoft, I doubt things would have worked out much differently for the studio. At best, it would be a Retro Studios situation, with Nintendo keeping the company under their thumb, with no creative autonomy, never letting their projects get off the ground, but hiring enough talented rotating staff to make a good game occasionally. It would still have been Rare in name only.
@mesome713 That sounds very odd. Rare developed the DK games for Nintendo, it was always Nintendo's IP and all of Rare's work on DK would be owned by Nintendo. I don't believe Rare would have had any legal rights to the work they did with Nintendo's IP. Rareware's original IPs are a different story, those properties were never owned by Nintendo.
A lot of the talk about Pikmin 4's long development goes back to a Miyamoto interview years ago in which he said the next Pikmin was almost ready. In retrospect, he was almost certainly talking about "Hey! Pikmin" on 3DS.
Pikmin 4 has been confirmed to be in development but Pikmin is Miyamoto's pet project, he's probably taking his time with the game, not viewing it as a priority for the company, just as he did with Pikmin 3.
As I've said before, ALL good Wii U games should come to Switch. They deserve a wider audience.
One particular game I'd like to see is Star Fox Zero, reworked for classic controls on Switch and some added content. Nintendo's insistence on Gamepad controls really divided the audience.
And Platinum's original concept of the game sounded a lot more epic than what we got; it feels smaller than Star Fox 64.
Either that, or Nintendo should get the Starlink team at Ubisoft working on a full Star Fox sequel with the Starlink engine.
@andyc777 Well, I saw a video analyzing Miyamoto's statements on Pikmin 4 and it turns out he was probably talking about "Hey! Pikmin" at the time. He has said Pikmin 4 is in development though. Pikmin has always been his pet project, he's probably taking his time on it.
Remember, the problem is that Sticker Star and Color Splash were legitimately BAD RPGs with pointless combat systems and poor, lazy game design. You can still have "gimmicks" and be a great game though. Super Paper Mario was an example of how to do something different with the series and still be awesome. Paper Mario itself was a follow-up to Super Mario RPG: Legend Of The Seven Stars on SNES and was very different from that game but still awesome and another classic.
@muscpt It also depends on the latency of the TV. A lot of modern displays have too much input lag, making the game that much more difficult to beat. It requires almost scientific precision. Lol
Anyone can make a game, doesn't mean it'll be good. If his weed company can develop a game in the style of Punch-Out!! that's even half as good as Nintendo's installments, I would be impressed.
Why not enlist some hungry, talented indie developer that would give all their effort to make a quality game, in order to capitalize on the publicity? No shortage of those.
1. Sonic Mania 2 2. Sonic 3 & Knuckles on current platforms (Worked things out with Michael Jackson's estate?) 3. Sonic movie sequel announcement/teaser 4. 3D Sonic game, hopefully as great as Generations and Colors, not a budget production. (Heroes was underrated as well) For that matter, you have to remember everyone liked the Sonic action segments in most 3D Sonic games, they just didn't care for the poor gameplay of some other characters and all the gimmicks they were shoe-horning in. 5. With the success of the movie, perhaps it's time for another serious Sonic animated series/anime? The original series that featured the characters that went on in the comics was great and the Sonic X anime was the best of them all. Sonic Boom was a comedy show for younger children, just like the "Adventures Of Sonic The Hedgehog" series that was syndicated concurrently with the original series in the 90's. (I don't remember much of the series where Sonic was in a punk band)
@glorymade The last games were announced on February 11th. You're really going to ACKCHYUALLY me over one day? Lmao
Regardless, the last few updates were TWO months apart, not three. They're either a month late or being trickled out even slower now.
And, again, it would have been good of Nintendo to drop batches of classic games earlier for people during the peak of lockdown; not a good time to further slow their release.
@NintoRich They're fully owned by Nintendo, so they probably had a regular salary. (Not to mention the Tropical Freeze Switch port)
Either they spent all that time pitching games, consulting on other games and tech for Nintendo, working on cancelled projects, or all of the above. Unfortunately, I doubt we'll see another game from Retro before Metroid Prime 4.
One thing's for certain: Nintendo was making relatively poor use of a greatly talented studio.
@MrGawain This game was supposed to have starred multiple members of the Sheikah tribe.
Members of the Sheikah tribe, such as Impa and others, or their symbolism/technology, have appeared in every mainline Zelda game since OOT, both console and handheld, if I'm not mistaken.
(Haven't played the Link's Awakening remake yet, but that's a remake of a game that pre-dates OOT, regardless)
If Nintendo wanted the 3DS to sell more units, they should have kept more models in production and re-released more NINTENDO SELECTS on a regular basis. (Many, many great games from several years past are still full price on the eShop and in stores, if available)
I absolutely love the 3DS and play mine on a regular basis, and still have a huge backlog.
The Switch is 3 years old now and it's library ISN'T EVEN CLOSE to matching the quality of exclusive 3DS games. (It probably will, but not for at least 2 more years)
@Elvie Yes and no. The first 2 games are EXCELLENT and well worth playing, regardless if you even bother with 3.
Mass Effect 3 wasn't TERRIBLE per se, but the storyline is incredibly stupid and out-of-character compared to the first two installments, which are modern sci-fi classics. A lot of the post-launch content at least added some more meat and fan service to 3, but it's still a step down. EA ruined Bioware when they bought them out.
The less said about the putrid Mass Effect: Andromeda the better and Bioware is probably finished after the catastrophic failure of Anthem unless the next Dragon Age is awesome, which is unlikely. (It may not even happen at this point)
Another in a long line of once-great developers murdered by the EA monster.
The trilogy almost came to Wii U apparently, before EA got butthurt because Nintendo wouldn't use Origin for online services. That salt may have been the reason for the relative lack of EA support all these years.
I honestly don't see the point. Just get Treasure Trove.
King Of Cards was probably my favorite of the games, in terms of gameplay, though I wish they could have went with an alternate timeline like Plague Of Shadows or let you make different decisions with the story, rather than just be a prequel; kind of a downer.
Plague Of Shadows is very close as well. Absolutely loved it, great characters and the most original gameplay of them all.
Spectre Of Torment, while still excellent, was personally my least favorite of the games, due to it's more linear, confined nature compared to the others, but I understood what they were going for, the influences they were drawing from, with great gameplay and story.
TWEWY is also a great game for what it is, but not really my thing. Granted, it's been several years since I played the game on DS and may give it a re-evaluation at some point.
@DinnerAndWine That talent didn't come out of nowhere though. It was the environment of the time that fostered and encouraged their creativity and the writers putting the talent over with storylines and angles that captured the audience.
Look at all the talent you mentioned when they first started with WWF/WCW and how they evolved into the Attitude Era, or how the nWo guys put a fresh spin on their careers with that angle, it's like night and day.
There's tons of wrestlers these days who have the moves on the mat to put themselves over, but they have the charisma and character of a boiled potato. That comes down to the writing and lack of creativity, it's beyond stagnant and they seem to have no idea how to tap into the zeitgeist of today's audiences.
The art style looks terrible, reminds me of knockoff mobile games that are advertised on facebook.
At this point, WWE needs to pull their license and give it to someone who actually cares about the product.
Or maybe AEW will start making games with their brand.
Really hope AEW keeps rising and giving serious competition to WWE. The success of the Attitude Era, including the games, was due to the competition between WW(F)E, WCW and also ECW for viewers, being in touch with what captured the imagination of mass audiences at the time, not just wrestling fans.
The only way WWE or AEW will ever capture that kind of success again is if they understand it's all about the WRITING, storylines and SPECTACLE. As it is, 9 out of 10 kids and teens would watch a current wrestling match, shrug, and think "That's cool, I guess" and go back to playing Super Smash Bros.

Re: Switch Online's N64 Update Is Live (Version 2.4.0), Here's What's Included
One option I really wish Nintendo would add to NSO games is a "performance mode".
That is to say, the option to lock any game to 30fps. (or 60fps for some)
Not only would this greatly improve the experience for many N64 games but it could DRAMATICALLY improve Star Fox 2 on SNES, for example.

Re: Review: Shovel Knight: Shovel of Hope - Seven Years On, This Action Platformer Still Dazzles
@retro_player_77 They retroactively named the original game "Shovel Of Hope" after the expansions were released.
It's probably a reference to the original 1977 Star Wars being renamed "A New Hope" years later.
Re: Geoff Keighley Announces Summer Game Fest, Four Months Of News And Events
4 months?!? LMAO
This is going to crash and burn, it's just a regular video game news cycle at that point.
Why can't everyone just agree to hold online presentations during ONE WEEK in June and keep up the gaming TRADITION of E3 Week?
It was always a great way to kick off Summer right.
Re: 33 Years Later, Japanese Famicom RPG Hoshi wo Miru Hito Is Being Rereleased On Switch
@The_Pixel_King
Ni No Kuni for sure.
TWEWY is also a great game for what it is, but not really my thing.
Granted, it's been several years since I played the game on DS and may give it a re-evaluation at some point.
Re: 33 Years Later, Japanese Famicom RPG Hoshi wo Miru Hito Is Being Rereleased On Switch
Cool.
I don't recall ever hearing of this game, I like the sound and atmosphere.
I'm always up for good RPGs.
Re: 2K Reveals WWE 2K Battlegrounds, A Brand New Arcade-Style Game
@DinnerAndWine
That talent didn't come out of nowhere though.
Re: 2K Reveals WWE 2K Battlegrounds, A Brand New Arcade-Style Game
Re: Community: Tried Super Mario Maker 2's World Maker Yet? Share Your Codes Here
Looking forward to people making great, creative, fun and BALANCED Mario games with this feature, instead of just stringing together random levels.
There's going to be some amazing games that come out this.
Re: Seven Classic NES Titles Just Appeared On The Switch eShop
Speaking of which, it's been well past two months since the last Switch Online NES/SNES update.
