If you're a fan of the Suikoden series, you've no doubt heard of (or even backed) Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. Announced back in 2020, the game was fully funded within two hours of the Kickstarter's launch and made over $4.5 million by the campaign's end.
At the time, the Nintendo Switch was not a confirmed platform — and it still isn't! Instead, Rabbit & Bear Studios has voiced its concern over the Switch's age and instead has said it is aiming for "Nintendo's next generation console".
However, in an update posted to the game's Kickstarter page — which is mostly in anticipation of the game's prequel, Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising, launching tomorrow — the developer shared something interesting in the FAQ section regarding the main game.
Apparently, many fans have been asking about a Switch release for Hundred Heroes, especially given that Rising is coming out on Nintendo's hybrid console. The prequel action RPG is meant to connect to Hundred Heroes as long as you play them on the same system. So, what does this mean for people who pick Rising up on the Switch, when the main course isn't slated to release on the system?
Well, it turns out that a Switch version of Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is being investigated by the team. Here's what Rabbit & Bear has said about this:
While the release of Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes has not been confirmed for the Nintendo Switch, we are currently undergoing a technical investigation into development for a Switch version of the game.
If you purchase Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising for the Nintendo Switch, then you will be able to enjoy the crossover content in Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes on any Nintendo console version confirmed in the future.
Of course, this means nothing as it stands, and given the developer's reservations back when the Kickstarter launched two years ago, we're trying not to get our hopes up. But ever since Rising got an official release date, we've been secretly hoping for a potential change of heart, though we realise game development is not as easy as clicking your fingers.
We'll keep you updated on when Rabbit & Bear Studios make a decision for their turn-based RPG. In the meantime, at least we have a city-building action game to keep us busy! Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising launched tomorrow, 10th May, on the Switch eShop.
Will you be picking up Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising tomorrow? Would you like to see a Switch version of Hundred Heroes? Join us in worrying about the second possibility down below.

Why is it worded like it's a court case lol
Just say no and stop wasting our time.
I backed this literally Day 1. Suikoden is still my favorite series, and this was a no Brainer. I am still hopeful.
Of course, they don't want to loose potential sales from Rising...
@iLikeUrAttitude Probably to avoid people hyping a Switch version when they might not be able to deliver. Wouldn't be the first time sites like Nintendolife have done similar things.
@AlanaHagues You ask if we will be picking up Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising tomorrow.
I ask if you/NL will be reviewing ECR tomorrow.
Wait so the main game comes out next year? And they said it will be on nintnedo's next console?
So are they hinting Nintendo's next console is closer than we think, like 2023 close.
Also there's absolutely no way the switch can't run the game, it's just a HD 2.5D game
Switch can run doom eternal but not this?
Nintendo ain't making their next console until 2025 so these guys may as well not bother right now. Switch is selling like hot cakes at the moment and still getting greats games that doesn't need high specs to run. I still don't see why they are having difficulty getting this to run on Switch. HD-2D games aren't difficult to produce on Switch, just don't take the cheap lazy way (cloud port) like some other companies.
We've seen the Switch run all sorts of games and we've seen what this game is supposed to look like. If it "can't run" this game, that's solely on the developers.
I want a Suikoden like game so I hope this does come to the Switch.
But if you ever needed proof we aren’t getting a Switch Pro any time soon, this is it.
They're just being lazy
I feel the whole "if switch can run X then it can run this" argument doesn't always work, for example maybe the engine this game runs on doesn't play well on switch and it definitely feels like if it does end up on the system that version would suffer quite a bit.
the problem with backing a game for nintendos next console is that it could end up getting rid of the whole hybrid system which is the main reason i would want to play the game on said system, otherwise i would probably end up going with another system or trying to pick up a steam deck.
@UltimateOtaku91 They don't know when Nintendo's next console will come out. They were just covering their bases in case it did come sooner than expected (which it won't) and in case the game can't run on the Switch.
I love how it is "launched tomorrow"
Three words: WHAT A JOKE!!
This is why you never buy only one console. You always have other stuff to game on.
Whether they can make it work on switch or wait until it’s successor, just don’t put it on the freaking cloud!!!
@Serpenterror it will come out before 2025 it is possible it could even come out next year..
@Serpenterror Both Octopath and Triangle Strategy push the Switch pretty hard. While they have a pixel aesthetic, everything is rendered in 3d and there are a lot of very taxing modern effects used. Octopath runs at subnative resolution and Triangle has framerate drops when there is a lot happening on screen. It's not unreasonable that a small studio making a game funded through Kickstarter doesn't have the capacity to do a proper Switch port.
Removed - flaming/arguing
The game looks like it can be ran on a 3DS, these people talking about it as if its Elden Ring or something
Just because it could run on a switch, does not mean you should run it on a switch.
These type of games usually sell best on Switch. Skipping is its kind of a brain dead move.
I have a nasty habit of truncating things and all I saw was don't buy this on switch if you want to play the other game.
So yay. Trophies!
The graphics for this game rivals that of HD-2D games from Square-Enix and looks amazing. But I don't think it's hardcore enough to state that they will be waiting for the next-gen Nintendo console nor warrant a technical due diligence. If you ask me, they just don't want the trouble and should just state it as such.
If they never mentioned Nintendo in their original campaign in the first place then I wouldn't have thought of them being lazy since it's their choice of platforms. But in this case they did and they opted to state their [illogical] intentions with Nintendo hardware. So yes, IMO they're just lazy. If you ask me the reason for releasing the spin-off game on Switch is just so to squelch the complaints of the lack of a main game release on the platform.
Still, hopefully it comes to Switch since it does look pretty great.
@MindfulGamer We have reviewed it https://www.nintendolife.com/reviews/switch-eshop/eiyuden-chronicle-rising
Not saying I don't agree to some extent with people on "why can't this run on Switch", but at the same time, I find it amusing with how many "X can do this, why can't YOU do this?" comments on this article.
There's a certain lack of self-awareness when you claim something is so straight-forward despite not being a games developer yourself lmao.
@Kyranosaurus
Sure, but it is still proof. You don't need to be a games developer to know this.
Put it another way -
If a turbo meant for a Ford Focus RS (PS4) can be put in a Ford Fiesta (NSW) and work/run, then, this new turbo can also do the same.
It's not saying it won't take effort, because it will, but it certainly could come over.
The developers clearly have this weird fetish of thinking the Switch 2 is around the corner, considering when the campaign got announced, it's clear their Switch 2 thinking ended up being realised as the OLED and thus Switch 2 isn't actually coming anytime soon.
Why however they wouldn't want to put it on a console with a huge install base (why else did they put it's prequel on it) is bizarre really, just do it already, you already made far more money then you ever expected on Kickstarter, let alone the money you will then make from sales.
It's a bit of a joke really, they have already been paid and are going to get more. Stop with the excuses and get on with it.
This game would likely sell best on Switch.
If they can get the game running on Switch without too many compromises, I think they will.
And no, not every developer are technical wizards like Saber Interactive or Panic Button.
Also, a game can look deceptively "low-tech", like an HD-2D game that mimics pixel art, but can actually be very taxing on hardware or have engine compatibility issues.
Anyway, I hope Konami suddenly gets "inspired" to release a Suikoden collection on consoles, similar to how they dropped the Castlevania collection in time for Bloodstained. Lol
