Re: Miyamoto Reveals The Moment He Knew He Could Trust Illumination With A Super Mario Movie

Impaler-D

Not a big fan of Illumination films but hopefully Nintendo will take a more hands-on approach, with Illumination essentially being their work horse.
If they turn this into some kind of bottom-barrel schlock for 5-year-olds, (like most of their films) I will not be happy.
I'm not the biggest fan of Disney and DreamWorks either, but they have a better track record, at least.
Warner Bros. Animation or LAIKA (!) would have been even better choices.

@T7Hokage017 Because 2D animation doesn't appeal as much to mass audiences, especially young children, in the West anymore. (or so the studios believe, and they make that decision)
Sad but true.
As much as we may not like to admit it, even the most popular anime films and series, for example, are pretty niche compared to 3D animated films.

Re: Feature: Castlevania Season 3 Review - Netflix Ups The Ante With A Darker, Raunchier Series

Impaler-D

"Did anyone order burning devil goat turds from the sky?"

Why yes... YES I DID.

The first two seasons were very good, and I'm getting the impression this season is more of a "bridge" to the next major storyline?
Was actually hoping they would time-jump to adapting the next chronological game storyline, with new characters.

The only major issues I've had with the series, so far, is the dialogue being a little too meandering and unnecessary at times, a few lame characterizations, and IMO the series would have worked better in the style of dark hand-drawn Western animation instead of anime. (Sorry Weebs)

Re: Bloodstained Axes Roguelike Stretch Goal, Will Replace It With A New "Randomizer" Mode

Impaler-D

@BenAV It's a great "Castlevania" game, honestly one of the best, and you would be cheating yourself out of an experience if you're a fan of this style of game whatsoever.

Looking forward to the new character campaigns.
The lack of a roguelike mode bums me out a little, since it would have added tons of replay value, but it's fine.
I'd rather they got to work on a sequel soon instead of spending several years laboring over DLC, like Shovel Knight did, anyway.

Re: The Project AM2R Creator Now Designs Levels For The Ori Developer Moon Studios

Impaler-D

Well, good.

I never understood the concept of these elaborate fan projects.

Why not put all that time, talent and passion into your OWN indie game that's inspired by your favorite games, instead of working on something that you will never own?

Imagine, for example, if the Yacht Club guys had decided to make a DuckTales fan game instead of Shovel Knight?
All they would have gotten was a cease and desist order from Disney and a game that only a small niche of people would download off a BitTorrent site, instead of creating one of the most beloved new IPs of recent years.

Re: Angry Pikachu And More Pokémon-Themed Funko Pop Arrive This May

Impaler-D

Yeah, I never understood the appeal of Funko Pops.
The faux-chibi designs look ugly and they often attempt to make cool characters look infantile.
It's bizarre and very bugman-ish.

The only Funko figures I've liked were the Mystery Minis, before they gave them the big cutesy eyes in recent collections.

I've collected the Horror Classics Mystery Minis, for example, and their art design was awesome.

Re: No Smash Ultimate DLC Expected Beyond Fighters Pass 2, No Future Smash Games Planned

Impaler-D

The final six fighters could be amazing.

We know we're (PROBABLY) not getting another Fire Emblem character and we also know we're probably getting a Pokémon from Sword/Shield.

The sky's the limit on the other 5 fighters.

We've had 4 LEGENDARY series represented in the first pass: SMT/Persona, Dragon Quest, Banjo-Kazooie, and Fatal Fury/KoF.

I fully expect Nintendo to choose some similarly exciting reps this time around.

The specific characters I still want to see:
Crash Bandicoot
Doomguy
Geno (unlikely at this point, but maybe an upgraded costume like Sans and Cuphead)

Re: Metroid Prime 4 Dev Retro Studios Hires Super Lucky's Tale And Crysis 3 Designers

Impaler-D

I've made peace with the fact we probably won't be getting Metroid Prime 4 until 2022.

Also, Retro Studios doesn't have another game in development that will release beforehand.
They probably spent the time between DKC: Tropical Freeze and MP4 consulting on development of other Nintendo games, doing the Switch port of TF, and working on pitches that were rejected by Nintendo.

And maybe (a big MAYBE) developing the fabled Metroid Prime HD Trilogy that Nintendo could be holding in their pocket, waiting for the right time to release.

I just hope the rumored new 2D Metroid from Mercury Steam and Nintendo is a real thing and will release over the next year.

Re: Sonic Movie Speeds Towards $65 Million In Its North American Opening Weekend

Impaler-D

@RareFan Of course, that's what "woke" generally refers to, putting agenda before quality or shoehorning in said agenda.
Whether I agree or disagree with the slant of a work, I'm willing to give it a chance if done smartly and respectfully, not insulting the viewer's intelligence.
That's the difference between, say, a classic series like Star Trek: The Next Generation and detestable garbage like "Discovery" and supposedly "Picard" as well.

Re: Sonic Movie Speeds Towards $65 Million In Its North American Opening Weekend

Impaler-D

@RareFan I agree.
"Get woke, go broke" is ringing very true lately.
A lot of these agenda-driven media companies/creators are trying to outlast the fans in a war of attrition but it's not going to work.
When we continue to vote with our wallets, we win.
And Sonic certainly deserves success for respecting fans and correcting itself to such a degree, at the very least.
Of course I'm not expecting some kind of masterpiece, but I've heard very good things about the movie for what it is; seeing it tomorrow.

Re: Sonic Movie Speeds Towards $65 Million In Its North American Opening Weekend

Impaler-D

@Quarth That would be nice, but it's rather hard to do when the aforementioned things are still so commonly injected into video games, gaming culture and other media, despite being quite unwelcome with fans.
It doesn't matter if you stick your head in the sand.
It's perfectly fine for fans to have a celebratory moment when something succeeds that actually listens to and respects the fanbase, rather than treating fans like dirt.

Re: Random: Two '80s Icons Combine In This Custom-Made Megatron NES Zapper

Impaler-D

If this were a real product, I would pick it up in an INSTANT.

It would also be a good way for Hasbro to get around re-issuing the Gen-1 Megatron on store shelves without looking like a "realistic" weapon.

I got the recent 35th anniversary SIEGE Megatron with the classic animation paint job and his tank mode is awesome as well.

Re: Bandai Namco Announces Dragon Ball FighterZ Season 3, Kefla Joins The Battle This Month

Impaler-D

@dimi Granted, he certainly had some very pervy moments in Dragon Ball Super.

He literally defeated an opponent in the Tournament Of Power, a tease who was trying to use her charms against him, by making her run out of bounds from fear after threatening to VIOLATE her, for example. Lol

I'm sure the consistently-awful Funimation dub probably changed the dialogue in his scenes but I only watch Japanese subs.

Re: Bandai Namco Announces Dragon Ball FighterZ Season 3, Kefla Joins The Battle This Month

Impaler-D

At this point, I just want MASTER ROSHI.
And he needs a really PERVY dramatic finish against the female fighters. Lol

I'll be fine with anyone else as long as he gets in.

Champa would be hilarious.
Cabba would be cool.
Bulma could be interesting. (and would certainly work well with Roshi's aforementioned perviness)

The new big bad from the manga, "Moro", would be great as a preview of the upcoming return of DBS or another movie.

I'm just glad they're still supporting the game with new content, still the BEST traditional fighting game on the scene IMO.

Re: Wonderful 101 Confirmed For Switch, But There's A Catch

Impaler-D

It's DEFINITELY going to be more than funded by the end of the day.

It's very strange that Nintendo didn't pony up the money for an exclusive port though.

And did Nintendo ever actually own the IP or was Platinum the sole owner with Nintendo just publishing the game on Wii U?

If Nintendo owned the IP, maybe Platinum just asked for it back if Nintendo wasn't planning on investing any money in future development of the series.

Re: Random: The Real Reason N64 Lost To PlayStation? Depressing Games And Lonely Players, Apparently

Impaler-D

@Belatarr He was a very smart businessman overall and President of Nintendo long before they entered the arcade and home console market.
He viewed video games as "toys" and he was successful when the public and gaming audiences viewed video games as akin to toys as well, but obviously lost touch with gaming culture and how video games were maturing as a medium toward the end of his career.
I recall that he even referred to the GameCube as a "toy".

Re: Random: The Real Reason N64 Lost To PlayStation? Depressing Games And Lonely Players, Apparently

Impaler-D

@russell-marlow It's not just about story and cinematics, video games were gaining respect and getting noticed as their own maturing artistic medium during that era, accomplishing things unique to an interactive medium; I was there, this was the attitude toward games in many fandoms, publications, articles, etc.
It was an exciting time and the following generation was an extension of that, but this was the generation that was truly pushing games forward, in that respect.
Also, a game can certainly be "gamey" and still be an artistic achievement.
If anything, it's more of an achievement for a game to express it's art through interactive means, the strength of the medium itself, rather than lengthy cut-scenes.

Re: Random: The Real Reason N64 Lost To PlayStation? Depressing Games And Lonely Players, Apparently

Impaler-D

Lmao No.
It was the cartridge format, plain and simple.
If the N64 had used the CD format, it would have CRUSHED the PS1.
Remember, early in it's life-cycle, the N64 had more hype and was more desired than the PlayStation due to it's amazing graphics and some iconic Nintendo games, but that goodwill quickly dried up as it became clear it's anemic schedule of game releases wouldn't be getting any better.
Meanwhile, the PlayStation continued to receive waves of amazing games on a weekly basis and it quickly overwhelmed the N64, not to mention being more affordable as well.
If the N64 had used optical media, most all of those great PlayStation games would have been on that console instead.
Still, undoubtedly, the biggest mistake Nintendo ever made.

Re: The Poor Old Nintendo 3DS Has Sold Just 620,000 Units In The Past Nine Months

Impaler-D

BTW the Switch UI/firmware is still very flat and unimaginative by comparison.
Not only is the Switch lacking all the great pack-in activities that were there since the launch of the 3DS and were further expanded in the years after, but it doesn't even have THEMES.
Why did Nintendo go from something so relatively creative and customizable, to something so basic?

For starters, add themes and maybe bring back the Nintendo Badge Arcade.
I haven't checked, are there even folders yet?

Re: The Poor Old Nintendo 3DS Has Sold Just 620,000 Units In The Past Nine Months

Impaler-D

No console is "dead" to ME, I still play all my consoles and still discover new hidden gems all the time.
Handhelds are particularly easy to keep in your rotation, because you don't need to swap TV ports or find ways to upscale to current TVs, if need be.

I'll definitely miss new 3DS games though, because I LOVE LOVE LOVE the stereoscopic 3D effect.
When done well, it brings a level of depth and pop to the graphics that even makes 4K seem boring and flat by comparison.

I was playing Samus Returns last night and I'm still wowed by how good the game looks in 3D.
And there's still a ton of 3DS games I need to pick up and play at some point, I've missed quite a few over the years.
The 3DS ISN'T EVEN CLOSE to being a "dead" console to me.

Re: Reminder: Smash Bros. Ultimate's Second Fighters Pass Can Be Purchased From The eShop

Impaler-D

@nlsavaru 6 characters and stages (plus music tracks and other extras) that require extra development time, resources, licensing, etc.
Smash DLC fighters are not content that was cut from the base game; they're extra fighters created for the fans and the cost has to justify keeping the project going, paying employees, etc.
Very reasonable and standard price for a fighting game DLC pass, most of which don't even contain this much content.

Re: Reminder: Smash Bros. Ultimate's Second Fighters Pass Can Be Purchased From The eShop

Impaler-D

For those not getting the Pass: Are you really going to be content with not owning some of the fighters? SMH

The first Pass was excellent.
Yes, Byleth was a little disappointing considering the iconic 3rd party choices for the previous 4 packs, but it's still a good fighter and Three Houses was great.
It's very understandable that Sakurai closed out the first Pass with the obligatory Fire Emblem character if he's saving an exciting choice to make a big splash as the first fighter of Pass 2, which is probably going to be the case.

We all KNEW (even if you don't want to admit it) a Three Houses character was likely in the works, we just didn't expect it in the first Pass, breaking the trend of the previous fighters.
And no, I doubt Nintendo will have another Fire Emblem game out by 2021, so don't worry about that.
The only "sure thing" predictions for Pass 2 at this point are a Sword/Shield Pokémon and PROBABLY a Breath Of The Wild 2 character.
