Konami's Castlevania franchise is a video gaming classic. With acclaimed entries on multiple systems – including the NES, SNES and Game Boy – the vampire-killing franchise has legions of fans all over the world, but Konami has neglected it of late. Sure, we were lucky enough to get a Castlevania Collection recently, but we haven't had an all-new entry in the series since 2014's divisive Lords of Shadow 2.
If you're sick of waiting for Konami to dust off the legendary Vampire Killer whip, then you might be interested in backing Lords of Exile, a new NES-style action platformer from one-man Spanish studio Czazuaga, which is currently doing the rounds on Kickstarter.
With a modest goal of just over £10,000 – of which almost half has been raised with 29 days remaining – Lords of Exile looks certain to reach its target. Switch is one of the target platforms – not a stretch goal – so if you want to see this game on your console, you'll need to put your money where your mouth is.

It looks alright. Bloodstained is a little easier on the eyes though the switch launch was bad.
Plays good on PC though.
It won't be as good as Iga's Bloodstained ..... Persuade him to make that a series, instead?
Those NES graphics, though...
@Damo There was that prequel to Bloodstained, Curse of the Moon a few years ago that felt like a Castlevania.
I rather like the look of this one, I decided to back it on the first day.
I still need to play Curse of the Moon for that classic-vania kick actually.
This looks so much like Curse of the Moon does, I'll probably try it if does get made but I'm not going to bother with the kickstarter. I do wish the guy luck though on his endeavors.
Almost like Curse of the Moon. It is not bad.
This looks almost exactly like Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon! Visuals, the train, the boss which is something between Death and Gremory. So this is like a copy of what was spiritual successful to 8-bit Castlevania? No thanks.
It is the same what happened with those shameless copies of Hollow knight, Cuphead etc. I don `t support this.
@Tasuki that was a good game. I was actually disappointed when the real game came out. It wasn’t made by the guys who made the prequel. I would’ve liked their version with updated graphics like the final version.
I like the idea of this game and its 8 bit aesthetics but can we move on from the NES builds and move on to 16-32 bits a la Super Nintendo instead? There’s only so much you can do with the 8bit stuff before it gets stiff and boring. Just my two cents...
I would actually like for Konami to give Lords of Shadows another go. Both games had their issues, but they also had undeniable strengths.
I think the 2D-Castlevania cravings can well be sated with some rather brilliant alternative these days. You know your Hollow Knights, Dead Cells and Blasphemous to name but a few.
I can't speak to Bloodstained, because I really hated the aesthetic of that game (kinda the polar opposite to LoS then) and the gameplay really looked ... I dunno, vexingly slow and cumbersome to me. I will freely admit though that my favourite 2D-Castlevanias were actually the NDS ones, maybe that is why - I dunno.
Anyways, point being, there is no real shortage of 2D games scratching that itch and while you think 3D action games are a dime dozen, there are actually rather few that do what LoS did.
This on the other hand is way to retro for me unfortunately - like I said, I favour the NDS ones anyways, not just because of visuals, but also not despite them
Meh i prefer Bloodstained.
Eh I rather a igavania like Bloodstained. Not a big fan of classicvania, think they aged poorly control wise and are just not as fun as the open ended variety igavanias have.
Been following this games progress for a couple of years, and it's great to see this finally hit kickstarter. Day one backed. I think this is a phenomenal effort for a solo programmer.
Looks very "Curse of the Moon"-ish...and that tower at the end is straight out of "Ninja Gaiden II". I won't be backing the KS, but if it releases and ends up playing as good as it looks, I'll definitely buy it.
A new castlebmbania came out on mobile rcelntly.
Getting a bit tired of 8 bit games, I played them on the original consoles, BACK IN THE DAY
@the_beaver
Ultra HD 8 bit NES graphics this is truly next gen.
No just kidding, these graphics hurt my eyes lol.
Nes games i only play are mario, punch out.
Ha! It’s a clone of a clone (Curse of the Moon). A double clone!
Like with retro, would love to watch a documentary on modern day Konami x x
Controls look slick and man, that armor reminds me of Dracula pre his condition in the Coppola film. Very interested.
Just finished Bloodstained RotN, and while the Switch version is a lot rough on the edges, it is everything I expected from a modern Castlevania. Here hoping Iga keep this up and coming
Bloodstained series is as official a Castlevania game as it gets, without the official Branding. I mean it's Iga.
This game looks ok-ish but still better than all the other knock off "Metroidvanias"
I have to say that I am just nearing the end of Bloodstained and although on Switch it's glitchy AF, I have LOVED it. I watched the documentary on here yesterday about 16Bit Castlevania's and lamented how creative Konami used to be. Let's hope they see the success of the retro collections, the Netflix show and Bloodstained and develop a core series side scroller that would live up to the 'vania' of metroidvania. I mean, when you're one half of the origination of a whole genre, that's got to count for something! Super Castlevania V please!
Just release your entire back catalogue of games Konami then sell your properties off to other game studios who will do your IP's proud as you don't deserve them any more.
For the love of all that is unholy Konami give us your 2nd Castlevania ('Igavania') Collection. I'm talking all the GBA/DS titles. You can have all the moneys.
I’m done with crowdfunding but good luck to the developer!
With all respect to "Classicvanias", I've always been more into IGA stuff, so Bloodstained (Ritual) is already the next best thing for me.
Konami are an absolute joke now. One of there most loved franchises and they have no interest.
I actually really did not like either bloodstained games, so maybe this one will scratch that itch for me
I really love the music on this trailer!
The game itself looks near identical to Curse of the Moon, but I loved that game so it's not a bad thing. Just feels strange just how similar it is.
So long as it's actually got frickin' Vampires in it.
Looks pretty decent for what it is.
@NoNoseNosferatu I think ppl do it because it is super easy to develop for. But than again Team Cherry made Hollow Knight handdrawn. That was their first game and only 4 people worked on it
@RPGamer man I want enhanced ports. And by that I mean up the sound/music quality, add 60 fps and widescreen
Just backed it! Looks really solid!
Reminds me of both the Odallus/Oniken and Bloodstained games which is a great thing.
Also seeing some influences from Shinobi.
I’ve only ever backed Bloodstained and Shenmue 3. This is officially my third game backing, an indication of how genuinely excited I am. My only wish is that this Kickstarter offered a physical release of some sort. The whole shebang with retro instruction manual and stuff. But I get it, it’s only one person doing this! That’s a lot to ask for.
I've seen actual NES games with better animation, but for a solo developer, not too shabby. Still, it doesn't really wow me or do anything different from games already out, like Curse of the Moon or the Castlevania collection.
I'm buying this as soon as it gets released on the Switch.
Another good Castlevania clone is Odallus. It's sold in a bundle with Oniken, which is an excellent Strider clone (better than any Strider game).
Looks alright but what is it with these trailers showing mini boss/boss fights. I don't know I like to be surprised once in a while.
I never really enjoyed Castlevania in the day but recently have been loving the series via the collection they put out so I see where the appreciation from fans comes from. This seems like a period influenced game and that is perfect unless you do not like the 8 bit style or have burnout form the market saturation at the moment.
I’m ready for Super Castlevania 5.
Has potential for sure. Will keep a look out for it.
I was a backer of Bloodstained and, despite them actually releasing a game, I didn't have a good experience supporting that project. There were fundamental changes to the project very late in development, lots of uncertainty, and lack of professionalism on the part of the publisher representatives. As a result, I can no longer support Iga's projects and I will avoid 505 games. I ended up okay, though, as I was able to get my money back out using creative means and dumb luck. I did receive and play the prequel, Curse of the Moon as a backer which was nice. Also nice that it was handled separately by Inti Creates. But because of my experience, I'm happy to see alternative takes on Castlevania besides Bloodstained. I'll have a look at the page, and I wish him/them luck.
Game looks fun but at this point NES style graphics are just... meh. Why not just revamp this and make it 16-Bit looking instead or be like the Messenger and had half the game be in 16-Bit style.
KONAMI......please can we have a straight up sequel to Castlevania IV. Keep the graphic and music style, but just crank it up to 11.
@PickledKong64 that’s true.
@X68000 is your gif a gif of SEGATA SANSHIRO? 😎
The man, the legend........RIP Segata San
Considering how Contra: Rogue Corps turned out, it's probably for the better that Konami continue to refuse making a new Castlevania.
The additions could be a double edged sword for the game, but it seems worth a chance for more Classicvania goodness. Will keep it in mind.
Looks pretty good actually. Id grab it if it comes to switch
@Kalmaro is bloodstained playing okay now on switch?
@GUSWANG I hear it's better but I prefer it on PC. More stable and runs smoother.
Still waiting for Konami to release the entire igavania collection in Castlevania Collection: volume 2.
@The-Chosen-one These graphics are beautiful; especially for one person development
While I appreciate classic looking games, and share so much love for Castlevania... I think I’m with most people here. This style is getting quite oversaturated. I like to see more developers at least do 16-bit and be innovative. Bring something in that makes the game special. But... if he makes it well enough and I get the opportunity to play it, I’ll give it a shot. Gotta start somewhere, maybe this game serves a purpose in a grand career of making games.
It looks okay.
Looks great.
Always up for more 'Vania.
@Antraxx777
Yeah whas just kidding, but one person? Didnt know that.
Thanks for this article. I just backed it! All this retro goodness from a one-man team. Fantastic! I know some people are getting tired of the 8-bit aesthetic but again this is all from one guy and this "simplified" theme allows him to actually balance all aspects of the game from graphics to sound to gameplay and still actually get the thing done. I for one have no issue rewarding a man for his hard work. I would, on the other hand. love to see Konami just re-release a collection of their GBA Castlevania games in a compilation on modern platforms like they did their 8 bit and 16-bit games. I always felt those games had home console quality and would look and play great on the big screen. I would have thought this was a no brainer. What happened?
@Seanmyster6 Yeah, that game was a big disappointment. I did not even bother to buy it on sale. What is going on over there with Konami?
Oh,
it doesn't look like Symphony of the Night or Bloodstained Ritual of the Night.
As such I am disappointed that I bothered to read this article ..
I sincerely wish Konami would sell their IPs and just disappear. Maybe when pachinko machines finally lose popularity. Oh, but we can't forget that they are going to dominate the mobile gaming scene (Narrator: They won't).
