I don't know why Blizzard would do another port of Diablo III. Before last year's BlizzCon they let everyone know that there would be nothing new announced for the game or the franchise so people wouldn't be as disappointed. So it's really the least supported of Blizzard's current game lineup. I know they have hired new people for the Diablo team but most people are hoping that they are working on Diablo 4 or Diablo II Remastered.
Is this just an update for F-Zero X or all N64 virtual console games? Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask aren't too bad during standard gameplay, but the minigames involving arrow and bombs are a mess!
I don't know about F-Zero X, but I've certainly had trouble with the archery mini-games in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time that I never had in the N64, GameCube, or Wii versions. I gradually move the Gamepad control stick one way and nothing happens, nothing happens, nothing happens, and then it suddenly jumps past what I was aiming for. I'm hoping for a mini-N64 with perfect copy of the original controller someday.
With the work they did on this and the Pokemon games I'm hoping there will be more Virtual Console releases that find ways to emulate the original hardware. Being able to do multiplayer and unlock content that required certain accessories would make those ports much more enjoyable.
I don't mind in most cases. But it gets really ridiculous when there are features that require specific Amiibo and that those Amiibo are sold out everywhere. It's less like a feature that you have the option to access with additional money and more like a feature that you'll never be able to access at all.
I've been thinking about the jet and submarine ever since the last patch where they said Mario has never been in a scrolling shooter. Now they know the error of their ways.
Interesting that Larry and Lemmy weren't actually named after anyone. Everyone always made assumptions about them. The Koopalings were always confusing since the Japanese version didn't give them names or even any explanation about who they were. So You had the Super Mario Bros. 3 cartoon coming up with their own names for them and claiming they were King Koopa's kids since they started working on the episodes before the game was released in the U.S.
They did the interactive Mario and Luigi thing a couple years ago at several malls, alternating between locations. My impression was that Charles Martinet was sitting at a console in Seattle with a microphone and a bunch of buttons to make Mario jump or wave and such. The display at the mall had a mic and camera to show him what was going on. He did some very good improvisation and found plenty of ways to answer questions while making sure to squeeze in mentions of Nintendo's big holiday titles.(Someone asked if Super Mario Bros. 2 was actually just a dream and he said that it might have been but that if you play Mario & Luigi: Dream Team you'll see that dreams can be very real.) He was nice enough to let me record Mario giving a shout-out to my meetup group too.
As for Charles Martinet's start with Nintendo, it started with him crashing an audition for the edutainment title Mario Teaches Typing. But his next gig was operating a giant Mario head that appeared on video at major events and interacted with people in a similar way to this. Voicing the American version of Super Mario 64 came after that.
I don't need any big Nintendo presents, but I hope they do put these interactive consoles in some other malls again.
I think Nintendo could have given better reassurance that there are still big titles on the way to the Wii U and 3DS without taking the Final Fantasy VII approach of making a huge announcement without having so much as a screenshot. I'm sure a happy medium can be found by next year's E3.
The big lesson that Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft need to learn is not to rush the system out before there is any major games available. If the first must-have title doesn't come out for over a year after the system releases, why should people be expected to buy it on the day it comes out and let it sit there for months gathering dust.
I've got the Wii Virtual Console version so it won't cost me much to get the Wii U version. I'm looking forward to having the Rumble Pack functionality working again. Hopefully Nintendo will keep finding ways to add more of the classic games that didn't make it to Wii and restore some of the functionality that wasn't there in the games they did have on that system.
The Wii U lineup is certainly feeling like the later days of the Wii where a Legend of Zelda release was the last big hurah.
The Wii U really doesn' have many major releases on it total. And almost none of those big releases make use of the asymetrical gameplay that was promoted as the big feature that only the Wii U could deliver.
For me, I've gotten burned out on the difficult challenges and extra expenses that come with trying to unlock everything in Super Smash Bros and I'm finding myself revisiting my Wii games and the Virtual Console instead.
Even though I'm not too excited with Nintendo's strategy of holding off on announcing games that are still a ways off, I'm not sure if I understand all the hype from the Final Fantasy VII remake where there wasn't so much as a screenshot to show and no release date in sight.(Although with how long people have been waiting for the announcement alone, I can see some reason for celebration.) I wouldn't mind a happy medium between these extremes. I'm sure Nintendo at least had some videos and screenshots they could have teased just to back up their claims of commitment to the Wii U.
I have my doubts that Metroid Prime Federation Force will be up there with the main Metroid Prime series, but it will probably come out better than Metroid Prime Hunters. Anyway, there's enough time between now and the game release for people to calm down and give the game a fair try.
I wouldn't mind some hype for games that are over 6-months off, just to assure fans that the Wii U will be getting some major releases aside from the upcoming Zelda game.
With Amiibo, I'm still waiting for Nintendo to give some indication of how they'll be handling it. As more Amiibo are announced and more games are given features that you can only unlock with specific and rare Amiibo, I don't see an end of in site for the frustrated collected. It seems like Nintendo is just stretching things even thinner rather than meeting the demand for items that already exist.
I'm sure that tablets did affect interest in the Wii U, but Miyamoto's statement ignores the initial confusion over whether this was a new system or an accessory for the Wii as well as how few must-have games are out for the system after two-and-a-half years. On top of that, the features provided by the Wii U GamePad just haven't been utilised to their full potential in very many games. The whole "asymetrical gameplay" concept that was such a big selling point has barely even been touch upon.
Nintendo fans have good reason to be frustrated. The emphasis on Amiibo combined with the failure to meet demand has been painful. And with the Wii U finally gaining some momentum with Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros, and Splatoon fans were hoping that the Wii U would be keeping that momentum going. Nintendo's 1st-party franchises are the biggest thing it has going for it and not seeing much in the way of new entries after the system has been out for so long is not pleasant. The spinoffs that are coming out instead sting even more than when nothing is announced at all. It gives the impression that Nintendo isn't interested in making new entries in the true franchises.
As justified as the frustration is, I certainly think the reaction is more than a little overblown. But I feel it and even before the press conference I was finding myself focusing my time my GameCube and Wii games. The Wii U frankly has me burned out at the moment.
This really echoes the emotions of the diehard fans who get excited about Amiibo and limited edition hardware and then find out that there's almost no way to get ahold of them. Nintendo has been doing a great job building hype, but repeatedly "dropping the ball" is making a lot of their most loyal customers very bitter.
I'm guessing that this was meant to tie into some goofy skit in the E3 announcement video and Bill posted a little early. Kind of like if it was a year ago and people were scratching there heads because Bill posted something about wishing Reggie would stop shooting laser beams around the office while he was trying to work.
I feel like Nintendo might want to put on the brakes for a bit. Like postponing the next wave until there's a sufficient supply ready to ship while also working on meeting demand of the previously released Amiibo. They weren't afraid to postpone the next Legend of Zelda game. It wouldn't solve all the issues, but getting the new waves out doesn't seem to help much when they don't even have enough stock to support the preorders.
I like the concept a lot. But, as many people have pointed out, Adam Sandler is heavily involved with this and he hasn't made a good movie for over 15 years. I think I'll just watch the Futurama episode where New New York is invaded by Nintenduu 64. Same concept, more likable characters!
I know enough people who can't find the New 3DS XL in stock anyway. I'm pretty sure that the standard New 3DS will hit the United States eventually but Nintendo's got enough problems stocking the current hardware. So, if you're really worried about not getting a New 3DS for your collection, just remember: Nintendo didn't let you down with making the Wii Mini available stateside!
The exposure Nintendo stands to gain seems a lot more valuable than the minor profits it would get off a cut of the advertisements fees. They desperately need more exposure, especially for it's newer games. Whether this is through careful collaborations or videos they wouldn't even want to associate with like "Why Every Guy Should Get His Girlfriend Wii Fit". Some of the most successful ways Nintendo generated interest in their games in the Wii era was just showing people playing them.
Nintendo does tend to take a different approach than the rest of the industry. Sometimes for better, sometimes for worse.
It's certainly Nintendo's right to control how other people profit from their intellectual property. But with the Wii U, I think they desperately need more exposure. They need more "Luigi's Death Stare" attention. So even though I don't think they're doing anything wrong, I think they'd profit more from the an increased YouTube presence than the tiny percentages they'll be getting from video posters.
I see a few people asking about this code in The Lost Levels. You can continue from the first level of a world in that game without a code.(But it's not like in Super Mario All-Stars where you start from the same level. If you die on 3-4 and continue you'll start at 3-1.)
This code only does anything in The Lost Levels if you've beaten the game 8 times. If this is the case there will be 8 stars on the title screen. If you've done this holding A and pressing Start causes you to begin the game on level A-1.(In Super Mario All-Stars you just moved on to worlds A, B, C, and D if you beat world 8.)
Japanese video games and anime have had a lot of struggles to catch up with what the rest of the world finds offensive. The struggle was especially tricky with recognizing racial charicatures. Characters inspired by blackface popped up in some notible places(and often were later updated to give the characters purple skin after the mistake was realized). I find these things pretty uncomfortable, but I try to keep it in context. Remember that in Japanese theater all the performers paint their bodies and having people on the stage entirely in black makeup is just supposed to mean that they're just there to move set pieces and are supposed blend into the shadows and be ignored.
I've been aware of this since the NES days. It was one of the system's first codes. But I never used it much. I prefered to gather some lives in the first couple levels before warping back to where I died.
Fun fact: The same code is present in Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, but it serves a different purpose. If you complete the game 8 times, you'll have 8 stars on the title screen. Entering this code with 8 stars sends you to World A-1 where you can make your way through Worlds A, B, C, and D.
