Update:
We've received the following information on this release from Nintendo of America:
- This version was originally released on the Famicom Disk System in Japan, and its upcoming release will be the first time it is available in the United States
- Unlike Vs. Excitebike for the arcade, this version has a track editor, where you can use 20 different parts to create tracks and race on them against your friends in 2-player split screen
- This Famicom version of the game also featured more tracks than the original NES version, and had music added to the single player mode
- Vs. Excitebike will be released once the challenges in Builders Week (tweet below) are completed
Original Article:
Nintendo's been rather busy at the start of this week, and has now confirmed that VS. Excitebike is on the way, with it being part of 'Builders Week' - naturally this is promoting games with level creation aspects.
It's an intriguing announcement, as Nintendo of America has been teasing that a new eShop game would be on show at PAX Prime this coming week (28th to 31st August in Seattle).
VS. Excitebike did arrive in two forms in the past, with a notable version being on the Famicom Disk System which supported 1 vs 1 races and track creation. It's possible this'll be a Virtual Console release of that or, of course, it's not beyond scope that it could be a re-imagined new version - rather like the Excitebike: World Rally game that was released on WiiWare.
Whatever the case, it seems we'll be creating Excitebike tracks soon. Are you excite(d)?

I'd rather get Excitebike 64 on VC, please.
I already have the 3D Classics version, and you can imagine how long anyone can have fun with that.
I'm hoping that this means Nintendo will finally be putting its arcade games on Virtual Console.
Awesome!! Vs. Excitebike was my first introduction to the franchise.
Would be nice if you told us what the game actually was Nintendo.
Then again, considering how much you love to give us NES games....
I'd also like to presume this'll end up in Europe. VS Excitebike seems cool.
Love Excitebike (NES). Eager to see what Big N will do here.
I love Excitebike. Will we be able to save our custom tracks?
World Rally. I miss playing that online so much!
I'm sure this is just a VC release, though.
When I read the title, I imagined a new eShop game, but it must be just a Virtual Console release.
I am quite fond of the original Excitebike, has anyone got their hands on this Famicom floppy disk sequel? It is a worthwhile game?
That's interesting. Maybe we WILL get a Direct this week?
Well I said I'd take Excite-anything so BRING IT ON!
@manu0 If anything, all this info being dropped points to us not getting a Direct anytime soon. I do hope I'm wrong.
I have the original Excitebike for NES on Wii VC. I do really like that game, but I probably won't pick this one up.
Trials has made Excitebike feel antiquated.
@Tsurii
It was a joke.
The original Excitebike said you could save your custom tracks, but you actually couldn't.
The official Miiverse post confirms it's a Virtual Console release.

They just confirmed it's VC on Miiverse: "It’s all building up to the release of Versus Excitebike on Wii U Virtual Console."
Is this coming too 3DS, Wii U or both?
@Robo-Knight it might maybe they put earthbound beginnings also on the 3DS Virtual Console also SNES.
@Tempestryke Its builders week.
I think this is going to be a new eShop game. Something tells me it won't be a VC release... I could be wrong lol
Eh...I didn't really care for the original Excitebike, to be honest.

In America!? How odd.
Hopefully this is an update like the WiiWare game, I loved that one.
99.99999% likely won't have online added, but wish it did. World Rally was one of the best games on WiiWare.
Most exciting news for me in a while!
Bun Bun Mario Battle Stadium would have been even more exciting.
I just want Gotcha Racing this week. Can't wait to play a good top down Racer again
Wish they'd have added a track editor to Excite Truck or Excite Bots
I'm getting VS. Excitebike, but still waiting for a European download version of Excite Bots for Wii.
@firstnesfan @SKTTR Yes yes yes!
More Excite stuff to the Wii U. Or NX at the lates. I can wait no more.
And the F-Zero X Expansion Kit would have been a culture deed.
Excitebike 64 WAS the truth, no lie there. What was that one canyon where you could catch some stupid air?
It's funny, I was looking through the "Builder's Week" yesterday and saw Mach Rider and instantly thought about "Where's Excitebike"? And Vs Excitebike is something I always wanted when I played the original and said "this would be great if I could play someone". If that's the game coming, that will be an insta-download for me.
