@Damo - Maybe so, but I don't have faith in Nintendo to actually provide those sales. Nintendo have their own platform with exclusive games, whereas on PC that's usually very different - thus big sales. I would also take major issue if it turned out Nintendo still refused to add a dedicated account system to their next system.
If Nintendo went solely digital without an account system, and kept all of their games at £30 (No reason why they couldn't really) then I'd probably stop buying consoles from them altogether and stick to PC gaming. Going solely digital is indeed the future, but any console out there is going to be compared with a PC, and if it doesn't handle it well, it's going to lose a lot of customers.
If however they did surprise me and go solely digital with really good game prices and a real account system, then I'd be happy to give up physical media.
I have so many disagreements with this article. First of all - how was the 2DS an admission of failure? 3D is a very specific feature - and the 2DS was catered towards kids who shouldn't use it a lot, and people who couldn't use it. I play my 3DS with the 3D on all the time. 'Ditching the gimmick' would make me lose considerable interest in their next console.
As for the physical releases; yes, we're moving away from physical media - but there are very good reasons why people still buy physical for consoles. Since Nintendo has no account system none of my digital purchases are safe, and having dozens of pounds worth of games on one SD card is more risky than separate game cards. Not to mention trading, lending, and reselling of most games for at least half their value. The reason I only buy digital for PC is that I can regularly get amazing deals on prices (50-90% off most titles). Nintendo haven't given us any discounts as significant as that so far with the 3DS, so why force us to go digital? If the move is so inevitable and most people want it then simply stop buying physical - the option being there doesn't affect you.
I recently repurchased Harvest Moon 2 for the GBC, so this suits me well. I'll be sure to get Harvest Moon 3 when it comes out. This Lufia game however received quite bad reviews when it first came out, so I'll probably pass on it.
It's not good seeing Smash Bros. getting a big push. It seems like its the only bit of hype keeping Nintendo going nowadays. I was hoping they wouldn't be relying on SB and would instead actually focus on the new games.
Nicalis you made me wait 2 years to play Cave Story on my 3DS. In that time I played Cave Story+ on PC and loved it. Even though its one of my favourite games I believe that this version is inferior to that one, so I decided not to buy it...that is until I saw Nicalis actually priced the game in the EU accordingly with the US price. I'm Sold.
@JaxonH - I disagree. There are plenty of genres that are pretty much extinct now, besides maybe a few indie games. Platformers are very common in the indie scene, and overall there are lots of Platformers released.
@biglittlejake - With "Triple A" releases I'd agree, but there are so many good indie Platformers out there and coming out all the time. I don't think you can really say they're a dying breed considering how many other game genres have disappeared.
Well that's nice and all, but I ended up playing Cave Story+ on the PC over a year ago. While it is one of my favourite games, I don't believe this is the + version so I wont be rebuying it.
@allav866 - Nope, luckily the best version is on the PC, and that's been out for years. Cave Story 3D at retail, although rare, did also release in Europe.
@GloverMist - I don't think refusing to buy the same game on another platform can ever be considered cheap.
People didn't hate Other M because it was different, they hated it because it was terrible. Nintendo, stop pretending the response to a bad game means people want the franchise to die. There's no logic behind that.
Sounds akin to Scribblenauts in the sense that it sounds and is very fun at first, then quickly becomes very repetitive and boring. Considering its a full retail price title I think I'll pass.
It's refreshing to hear about a solo indie dev really passionate about their work on Wii U. I usually don't have much interest in playing a one button game, but considering it's only £2 I'll probably check it out if it comes to Europe. I understand why it was done though, and hopefully it does well enough for 4CG to make some more ambitious titles in the future.
I don't see why you would pre-order any game, let alone an eShop one. Just wait for reviews and more footage upon release.
The only reason to ever pre-order is if you know for sure that you'll be buying the game no matter what, and you get an advantage, like an early release date, a significant discount, one of a limited stock (ie. physical release only), or some kind of decent bonus. This system has none of those offers, so why anyone would use it is beyond me.
While this game can get a little irritating if you attempt to complete every path I'll still not understand why this game gets bashed so much. It's one of my favourite Kirby games and one of the only ones that doesn't bore me to death. The multiplayer back in the day was awesome as well (A shame as always that it isn't on the VC version though).
I hope that they actually do something new with it. Failing that, make it very similar to Super Mario 64, because we only saw that format in one game of the franchise - more would be nice.
@gatorboi352 - I find enjoyment out of Nintendo's current situation? You've got that right - I cant wait to see them go bankrupt and stop making games.
Honestly though, smartphones is probably just a short term solution to the problem - in the long term it would just take sales away from Nintendo's own consoles assuming they can even continue to make them. Has anyone actually done any kind of significant survey or analysis to see how many people would really want Nintendo on smartphones, and the extent to which they would actually buy their games on that platform - or is simply speculation? Iwata doesn't want Nintendo games on smartphones, and some investors do.
But hey, don't listen to me - I'm obviously not made for running a business, unlike yourself. You don't need to be an expert in a field to make a comment on it, so lay off please.
Yes, Iwata has made some mistakes, but I love my 3DS, it's amazing, and I think the Wii U is a very fun system (it just needs some good games and actual third party support). I cant agree with letting him go when the best ideas being thrown around to solve Nintendo's problems are "Go to smartphones" and "Build a theme park". I mean seriously? Have some damn integrity here.
@unrandomsam - I doubt Nintendo delays its own games just so specific indie titles will sell better though (ones that get them less to no revenue compared to the Virtual Console). Even if they did - if an indie game is losing all of its sales because a 20 year old game just got re-released then one really needs to ask if it was a game worth supporting in the first place.
The big problem with this decision, as well as many others is that Nintendo simultaneously treats the Virtual Console service with little effort, while still acting like it has great importance with sales.
We don't get a guarantee of one title a week on the VC, even on the Wii U, where there are hundreds of games from the Wii VC waiting to make the jump. The Game Boy titles on the 3DS VC don't have colour palettes like they would on a GBC, and none of them have multiplayer enabled. While this may seem unimportant, the people buying these games primarily will be people who played them in the past - those who'd enjoy those options (Hell, just look at how well SEGA give options to the player on their VC games). If the VC service cant come close to competing with a GBC for features on playing a GB game then Nintendo is doing something wrong.
When people defend how Nintendo treats their VC service the same arguments seem to come up "If they released this game now then these other VC games wouldn't sell" or "If they put these games on this system they wouldn't sell as well on the first". We're talking about decade old games here, at least. People who own a Nintendo system generally either buy a lot from the VC service, or close to nothing. Deliberately slowing down releases to promote worse games that came out 25 years ago isn't how a service based around retro games should be run.
You know what probably would encourage more people to buy a Wii U though who already have a 3DS? Besides generally putting more effort into the service? Making game purchases buy the game for both systems. Anyone with a significant interest in the VC would suddenly have the ability to play maybe dozens of games on their new Wii U system of they bought one on either the TV or the gamepad. But hey - that would be a step in the right direction, and we haven't seen a lot of those in a long time with the Virtual Console.
@Jazzer94, @Melkac - You have no idea what Nintendo's plan is regarding GBA game release, so how can you say that with confidence? Regardless, I can easily buy the games on eBay for my GBA anyway, and I'd much prefer to do that that get them on the Wii U.
Squeenix, all I know is that you need to start bringing the 3DS Dragon Quest games over to the West. I realise Rocket Slime 3 and Terry's Wonderland probably wouldn't sell terribly well, but at least bring Dragon Quest 7. At least. Also Dragon Quest Monsters 2, because I love that game, and am desperately in need of playing its remake. >:3
As for Dragon Quest X? No, I don't want it. It's an MMORPG - those don't interest me anymore and more importantly aren't going to sell well at all outside of the PC market, and even there its a risky choice.
@ferthepoet - Of course, but with Australia sometimes a little too high is all you can hope for unfortunately. I agree on the 3DS point - that's why I wont be buying any GBA games on my Wii U.
I'll be honest; most of my favourite games on steam are indie ones. I buy indies because they offer fresh exciting games that dont cost as much as triple A releases. Once triple A's get their act together again and realize what's important (Not blowing all your budget on cut scenes, and making just another copy cat game of one that already exists) then I'll probably end up buying a lit more of them. I don't buy indies because they're 'cool' - I buy them because I want new experiences with gaming, and ones that actually look enjoyable. Don't get ne wrong, there are loads of terrible indie games, but at least the variety means you can probably find something that's right for you.
@Alpha2797 - The problem with that theory is that no one is going to buy a Wii U just because it has a few GBA titles for sale on it. Someone who wanted to play these games would probably buy the original cartridge and GBA over a Wii U that they don't want. As for DS titles - I just assume that's because the 3DS can already play DS games.
That's great and all, but as mentioned before, eShop games aren't going to sell systems (especially when so many of them are ports anyway). I'd much rather they work on their VC releases. Bring it up to 2 a week minimum ( There are hundreds of VC games on the Wii - it wouldn't be that hard).
Not really news is it though? He still wanted to "make the game a reality" a year ago. It's unfortunate but with Capcom at the wheel of Mega Man its not really going to change anything. At this point I think we'd all be celebrating if they sold off the franchise to someone else.
When I say I 'care' about exclusivity, what I really mean is that I wont be buying any Wii U games that I can get on my PC for cheaper, especially when its a lazy port. Which is a shame in a way because I haven't played anything on it since 3D World.
I really don't get where they're planning on going with their franchise. They made six good games with Layton, and then decided to quit while they were ahead (at least that's what I'm assuming they did). A seemingly smart decision as it is a formula that gets more tired with time, and while I've only played three of the games so far, I left at least 6 months between each of them.
If however they are planning on continuing the franchise, why are they taking the spotlight off the main character, who also happens be the name of the franchise? None of the other characters are that great on their own imo, but I guess we will have to wait and see.
Apparently disliking a game from Nintendo just means you're trying to be cool and jump on a bandwagon, not because you have genuine problems with the game. sigh Only on a Nintendo site.
@ZephyrTortera - Yea, because it looks worse than the game that came 20 years before it. If it looks like a cheap (and inferior) copy of a 20 year old game then most people are going to speak out and not buy it. Voting with your wallet is the only way to stop these games being made.
What tends to confuse me is people who will buy this game just because it's a Yoshi game, despite it adding next to nothing to the source material. These also tend to be the ones who 'don't get the hate' whenever a company tries to make more money by replicating an earlier game and not improving it in any substantial way (ie. laziness). People don't like to be taken advantage of. If you're the kind of person who wants a copy of a 20 year old game for a new console with next to nothing different for a full £30 then go ahead, but stop being surprised when others don't. It's more than a little ironic the defence this game is getting, since so many people here tend to bash the 'generic repetitive FPS' series like COD, when that's pretty much exactly what Nintendo is doing with this title.
Also - why is it so common for people to claim that we cant dislike the look of the game without playing it? No one ever says we cant think a game looks good without playing it. The solution to all of life's problems is not to buy every game just in case its good - that's what discretion is for. I will wait for reviews, as I always do - but when this game turns out to be what I think it is, I'll pass on it, and wait for Nintendo's next game - one that some effort was put into.
@Captain_Toad - Don't bother apologising for disliking the look of a game. If some fanboys get upset because other people don't like a Nintendo game then that's their own problem.
This post ended up much longer than I'd anticipated, so...
TLDR: This is why we cant have nice things.
Looks nice, but as always I'm hesitant to kickstart or support early versions of any game. Unless I'm very interested or they provide significant discounts for backers then its not for me.

More like Eggs-actly what I was expecting. Pass.
Re: Festival of Magic Kickstarter Relaunches With a Fresh Name
Looks nice, but as always I'm hesitant to kickstart or support early versions of any game. Unless I'm very interested or they provide significant discounts for backers then its not for me.
