Re: Feature: Things We Wish Nintendo Would Do In 2019

FlimFlam

@RadioHedgeFund You have a point with the graphics. I don't have any nostalgia for either gen, and I much prefer the sprites to the original 3D models. I still think that an N64 Mini could probably sell better than the PS1 Classic if the price would lower, but maybe not as well as the NES or SNES Minis sold. Either way, I'd prefer those games on Switch - more convenient and cheaper for me!

@RadioHedgeFund Disagree on the modern audiences disliking 32 bit games being the reason for the PS1 Classic's poor sales. I think it had more to do with poor emulation, disappointing selection of games, and a high price point. Nintendo's own classic consoles have been more retro yet much more successful. That being said, I would prefer that Nintendo does not release an N64 Mini and instead releases N64 games as part of its Online Service.

@MrBlacky I don't see the problem as long as NL continues to make new articles. Many people didn't read this site last year, so these are like whole new articles to them

EDIT: New article pitch: 11 NL articles about the Wii U that we'd love to see revised for the Switch.

Re: Soulja Boy Forced To Pull Knock-Off Consoles, Website Now Redirects To Nintendo's 3DS Store

FlimFlam

Truly the end of an era. I expect that, in a decade or so, internet forums will be dominated by posters reminiscing over the Christmas that they found a Soulja Boy under their tree, and the Soulja Boys will be regarded in a light not dissimilar to the Sega consoles of old.

Also, I hate how negative everyone online was about these consoles. Console wars are for immature middle schoolers. Grow up and let people enjoy what they want.

Re: Indie Hit Celeste Sold Over 500,000 Copies In 2018

FlimFlam

@MeloMan There's a lot of stuff to praise in Celeste. The difficulty is steep, but everything feels very fair and well placed. In some ways, it's like a puzzle game. All of the levels are broken down into individual screens, and it's often in your best interest when entering a new screen to plan how you want to approach the challenge before proceeding. If you would prefer a more relaxing time, the developers put in a pretty robust Assist Mode that lets you adjust things like the speed of the game and how many dashes you have. You can read more about it here:

https://www.polygon.com/2018/1/26/16935964/celeste-difficulty-assist-mode

The pixel art and music are also really good. I don't have any nostalgia for retro games since I didn't grow up with that era, but the pixel art and music here are very nice.

Finally, the story and characters have much more depth than they do in most platformers. Celeste would still be a terrific game without a good story, but having one helps it stand out in a crowd of other platformers with amazing gameplay on Switch.

Re: Nintendo Still Expects To Hit 100 Million Switch Software Sales This Financial Year

FlimFlam

@rjejr "Wii U and 3DS totaled about 85m and Wii U was an abject failure."

I hear people say this frequently, but the Switch wouldn't have to sell 85 million to be successful necessarily. There would of course be some overlap between those 3DS and Wii U owners, so the combined userbase might be closer to 75-80 million. Plus, Switch games probably make considerably more money than 3DS games, so I would imagine that the Switch would be considered a roaring success if it reached 70 million, especially if it keeps selling large software numbers. Of course, it would be even better if the Switch sold even more

EDIT: I totally agree with the rest of your post btw!

Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Piranha Plant amiibo Could Cause Some Trouble For Collectors

FlimFlam

@IHateTombs I don't think this is a case of artificial scarcity though. Amiibo sales have been declining for a long time. Piranha Plant has never been a popular character until now apparently. I'm also not sure how many people except Nintendo superfans are dedicatedly looking for amiibos anymore. Oversupply is often worse than undersupply. With that in mind, I'm just don't think it makes much sense to make big supplies of amiibo.

Re: New Study Suggests That Playing Violent Video Games Leads To Increased Physical Aggression

FlimFlam

@Ralek85 It's not that I don't believe in science. It's that this survey does not prove a causal relationship like this article seems to say. Even the authors wrote that playing violent video games is "associated" with violent behavior, suggesting a correlation experiment. It's plausible that more violent people are predisposed to play more violent games and that the games have no impact on their violent behavior. If the authors of the paper want to find a causal relationship, the only way to do so is to set up a controlled experiment so that they can isolate one independent variable (in this case, playing violent games).

Re: Video: Super Mario Run Makes A Big Cameo In Apple iPhone XS Commercial

FlimFlam

@Bensei I mostly agree with you, but FE is not even close to being as big as Mario or Zelda. I love it, but all of the mainline games in the series combined have not sold as much as Mario Odyssey or BOTW. That being said, a new FE (along with the other titles you mentioned) obviously still brings a lot of value to the Switch.
