Last weekend, YouTube revealed two Switch game trailers were part of the top viewed gaming video list in 2018. This weekend, Twitter has now shared its own list of the most-tweeted video games in the US this year. Interestingly, four Nintendo franchises featured. These included Pokémon, Super Mario, Super Smash Bros. and Splatoon.
Once again, Epic's free-to-play battle royale Fortnite took out the top spot and there was also a mention of Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, Overwatch and a few popular sports titles. Take a look at the full list below:
- “Fortnite”
- “Call of Duty”
- “Overwatch”
- “Pokémon”
- “EA Sports Madden NFL”
- “NBA 2K”
- “Super Mario”
- “Super Smash Brothers”
- “Splatoon”
- “Grand Theft Auto”
As Twitter didn't clarify, we're going to guess the Nintendo games being talked about in most cases were Splatoon 2, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Super Mario Odyssey / Super Mario Party and Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! / Pokémon GO.
Are you at all surprised to hear these Nintendo titles were some of the most tweeted about games in 2018 or did you expect this after hearing about all the successful game sales throughout the year? Tell us below.

I’m pleasantly surprised by this. Seems all that marketing has started to pay off.
Meanwhile, i don't like to get involved into such popularity like that.
I love my Switch, but i prefer something Not so popular / Hidden gems for me.
@Anti-Matter I know right, games get so much worse as more people start enjoying it
That list is mainly just an example of popularity not being a reflection of quality but it's good to see Splatoon getting some love nonetheless.
@Octane
And.... That's why i tend to be alone 😔(Almost never have any friends) because i don't like to deal with popularity that really lame in my opinion. 🙄
@Anti-Matter On the other hand, things get popular for a reason, so by avoiding things that are popular, you may be avoiding some absolutely incredible experiences! Try to keep an open mind
@Anti-Matter I find just liking what I like and not caring too much about everyone else's opinion works. If you enjoy it and it isn't bothering anyone then there isn't a problem
...but if you want to be edgy and only like obscure things then go ahead
@Kimyonaakuma This is a healthy adult attitude to take. As I mention later, going too far in either direction leads to your tastes being dictated by others. It's not a healthy way to live.
@Anti-Matter Avoiding things based purely on popularity is just as bad as only enjoying things because they're popular. It makes you a hipster, which is arguably just as bad as someone who sticks to the mainstream. The reason you might not have friends might be how insufferable this attitude can be.
Also, you end up missing out on a lot of quality games that way, for stupid reasons. Not to mention you, ironically, let the mainstream define your tastes anyway. So you're just as susceptible to it as most people. I'd argue even more So, since you're actively avoiding popular things. Most people don't do that, they just don't dig that deep to find obscure gems.
But I guess it's not really my problem, so I'll leave it at that.
@Octane Every time I try to sit down to try to play BOTW, I just can’t bring myself to start. I used to love the game, but now that I know over 10 million people like the same thing, it’s just not the same
Ugh so sick of fortnite. I'm glad splatoon made it though, Pretty impressive for how young the Franchise is.
@Regpuppy
By Naturally, i don't like certain popularity because they are not even interesting for me. They are just annoying me.
I do not want wasting my time to deal with lame popularity if i don't like them. It just makes me more irritated.
I will find something else that impressed me or another popularity that really fit with my criteria.
Oh, i'm type of Introvert people btw.
Introvert peoples tend to not following what is popular nowadays.
Glad to see splatoon is still getting love far after its release date
@Anti-Matter "Introvert peoples tend to not following what is popular nowadays."
Based on your pfp you like Pokemon right? Well Pokemon is one of the most popular video game franchise in the world. Time to reevaluate the games you like!
Also I am pretty much an introvert too and I like popular games
@Anti-Matter I'm starting to think this is a case of a language barrier here. Because introvert just means you avoid social situations. It has very little to do with the concept of popularity. I myself am introverted, to an extreme point, due to an anxiety disorder. Popularity is hardly on my mind when I start to like a game.
When someone actively avoids popular things, purely because they're popular. That's what we call a hipster, which is arguably the worst kind of contrarian.
@hieveryone
Maybe i like Pokemon, but Not as much as my Chibi Boxers.
Even my 3 Pokemon games on 3DS ( X, Sun & Ultra Moon) are still not finished yet and i rarely touching my Pokemon games since i got Switch.
Nintendo learned their lesson from the failures of WiiU, awesome console but almost no advertising
Fortnite is a cancer and should be wiped out of existence; I can’t stand that game or its fanbase at all.
Imagine next year when stuff like Animal Crossing and a new Pokemon gen releases.
@TeethInDarkness Or, y'know, let people enjoy what they enjoy and ignore things you don't personally enjoy.
I'm surprised Overwatch is still talked about despite the community not being happy with the game until more recently (Rein players rejoice!). I'm betting Smash Bros will top headlines thanks to the dLC lineup (hopefully).
@Anti-Matter So it isn’t the concept of popularity itself you take issue with. It’s specific franchises themselves you don’t like regardless? Cause that what it sounds like to me is your stance and there’s a distinct difference
Splatoon being on there definitely doesn't surprise me - Twitter is usually where comp players talk.
I love Fortnite. But even when I didn't play it, I couldn't understand all the hate it gets just because it's popular. It's a well designed game and I'm glad to see it thrive.
@Matthewxcv That’s my thinking. My friend and I loved playing together from summer to early fall. Fortnite is fun to me. Doesn’t mean it’s fun for everyone. But that also doesn’t make it the rebirth of evil. 😂
All hashtag, no content.
@TeethInDarkness
It's definitely a bandwagon game. Something else will be all the rage in a few years time.
You mean as well as Bowsette breaking the Internet?
Hey NL, have you forgot your tweet about Toad and Donald Trump:
https://twitter.com/nintendolife/status/1042106289868951554
@Anti-Matter This is such and out of time notion.
There’s no Red Dead but there’s GTA? That’s really surprising but I guess it’s the whole year.
Yeah but... Twitter is the dirty armpit of the internet. YUCK.
Mario Kart was trending not too long ago, don’t forget that one. Why it was trending is another story...
@Euler I was going to ask, and then it popped back into my head. Thanks for reminding me of that mental image, you sadist. I thought I managed to purge it.
switch fornite place with smash ultimate on list and were good
@Yoshinator i agree fornite is over rated .
@Anti-Matter So you don't like the switch then because its popular? By chance do you own a Sega Dreamcast?
@Trajan
I do like my Switch, but there are some games on Switch that i don't like especially from what is popular to other peoples.
I don't play Sega Dreamcast, nor even ever touch the machine.
@Anti-Matter What games don't you like?
@Trajan
Well...
I don't like Fortnite (or any shooting games), FIFA, NBA, any Realistic racing games.
Peoples keep talking a lot about those games and at the same time I keep focus on games i like, ignoring those lame games existence.
@Anti-Matter spoken like a true hipster. -rolls eyes-
