Japanese chart figures are now in for 10th December - 16th December, unsurprisingly revealing that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is still flying high at the very top.
The game shifted another 406,617 physical copies in its second week on the market - a number which most titles could only dream of in their opening weeks - beating PS4 new releases God Eater 3 and Judgment to first place.

How about that drop? If the trend continues, we could be seeing marginal sales in just six hundred years... Shame really...
I own and have played Smash Bros. Ultimate, and although the graphics and visuals are amazing, it just has way too much going on for me. It’s not my type of game. I am glad to see it selling the Nintendo Switch Consol though.
What about Arms? I did not see it on the list anywhere. It’s a great game with active online play.
Bring on Super Mario Brothers U. 😊
Amazing.
Ultimate deserves these numbers.
Switch sales fell 9 - doomed. 😂
I still think it odd that a country so focused on handheld tech is buying so many copies of games physically. Do they really want to keep swapping SSBU and Pokémon? Surely one of those 2 must be selling a lot digitally.
Really wish digital sales were announced, it's kind of a thing now.
Strong week for the Xbox One. Cracked the 1k between the two models. There's something you don't see often.
@rjejr they have been doing that for decades with the gameboy and ds. They didn't all suddenly develop lepra or something.
On a different note, it's the season to wrap gifts and eshop cards and digital licenses do not make nice gifts.
At least Xbox One X is selling, heck it beat out the original 2DS so that's a start.
Wow look at those Vita sales!!! Color me impressed
If they were to add in Smash Run, I'd just go ahead and consider it the most perfect Smash game ever.
@Giygas_95 nope, bring in a Subspace Emissary section and then it would be the best ever
Toy Con 03 was still selling in Japan. 🤓
@Bunkerneath Ehhh, Subspace was cool what with the cutscenes, but I never found it very much fun to actually play, and the replay value isn't there for me. I played absolute craploads of Smash Run though.
"Switch lost 9 sales from last week"

It's nuts that the Switch sales from this week are nearly identical. There's a reason why the holidays are such a big deal to the industry.
Nice shinny new big games on top. Good times.
Love if judgement came west. Did we just skip the UK charts this week 🤨
These sales results are absolutley smashing!
I'll see myself out.
looking at the charts, Ultimate has sold more copies in 2 weeks than the amount Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold in its entire lifespan, that's insane
Edit: never mind I'm dumb and this hasn't happened yet (though it probably will next week!)
That's more than 750.000 Switch games sold in a week.
@Bunkerneath, I completely agree I would love a new Subspace E., it was a great time to play through with a partner and I keep putting out there that Smash Ultimate is missing the Boss character Tabuu from Smash Brawl I think I'm the only one that misses him he was such a phenomenal character in my opinion. Now for me those two inclusions would have made Smash Ultimate really ULTIMATE., DON'T get me wrong I love Smash Ultimate it is great but it could have been better.
Sony obviously need to make their ads on this site even bigger.
@ReshiramZekrom Look again
Looks like BOTW will have passed the 2 million mark in the next two weeks (in Japan).
Wow, amazing results for Switch and Smash. And good lord, look at Splatoon 2. It's almost to 3 million.
16 of the top 20 on Ninty platforms. Bejeezleberries that’s unbelievable!
@rjejr Not in Japan.
Here, digital is not a thing yet. People are reluctant to go all digital since there is no guarantee you will be able to move your purchases on to the next console and also there’s no way to sell the game when you’re finished or just want to get rid of it. The pre owned market is huge in Japan.
I don’t see Japan going digital anytime soon...
Kudos to Nintendo on such success! If they continue to follow up with the same software support they’ll continue this trend. When we all play, we all win 😀
Where are "Gatorboi" and "Cobolt" when you need them?,I guess this article does not support their usual doom and gloom comments about Switch sales not being all that impressive.
@Agramonte No, the UK chart is right here: https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2018/12/uk_charts_a_solid_week_for_switch_but_smash_bros_ultimate_cant_hold_on_to_first_place
They haven't published the US charts for November yet though.
@johnvboy Hopefully gone for good so the rest of us can enjoy the site without their negativity.
This sales report is brought to you by the number 9
@Hyrule,
Nah Cobalt is a very determined troll,he will never let logic or reason stop his ludicrous rants.
@FlimFlam Oh thanks... missed it!
Yeah, I just saw PushSquare has US NPD up... That one is just good news all around 👍
@Pineapple_Mohawk serves Nintendo right - that's what the lack of playable Waluigi can do to an otherwise promising release.
@Baart meanwhile, my Switch news section just told me the literal opposite. XD
@Romeo-75 SPOILER. Tabuu is there (maybe not as a boss but a spirit)
I never know just how I'm supposed to feel about the enduring success of Senran Kagura.
The gap between #1 and #2 is also impressive ( games AND consoles)
Nintendo steamrolls over everybody else
It's no wonder the Switch is doing so good in Japan. It is catered to a japanese audience, since you can play on the go, in a land that has a lot public transportation. In addition you can still play it without a lot of space as you can put the Switch up with a stand, without a TV. If you are having a TV, the motion controls are more forgiving / don't require as much space, as the Wii. So overall the appeal is quite big.
@Agramonte Yeah, it's great to have a healthy video game industry
cool and not a red dead 2 in site lol. Maybe its not out in Japan or big in Japn.
I think it's safe to say that Japan is Switching over this holiday season.
Next year will be even better with a new core Pokemon game, Metroid, remakes of Final Fantasy and more yet to be announced! What's the possibility a new Monster Hunter gets announced or a new or remake of a Legend of Zelda? Maybe even Super Nintendo games instead of Nintendo games for the online service.
@biglittlejake 2019 hype, I’m feeling it too
I did a research last weekend on what my total switch spendings already are... don’t do that, you might feel it in your wallet!
@Giygas_95
I agree, the cut scenes were the only great part of Subspace in my opinion. World of Light may be a bit repetitive, but I find it more fun because it focuses on fighting instead of mediocre platforming.
@ReshiramZekrom Am I missing something? According to the chart above Smash has sold 1.6M in 2 weeks and MK8DX has sold 1.9M lifetime. So yeah, Smash will probably pass it but I don't get how you are seeing that Smash has already overtaken MK8.
@HatenoLife Actually yeah never mind I mistook the sales in brackets as not including this week's sales and just added the two numbers together LOL my bad
@personauser0893
There was a lot of that for some of these supposedly blockbuster, worthy of praise games. And the thing is I still think that RDR2 looks more interesting than some of those what I found to be hella overrated games
I'm really surprised with how popular Smash had been. Didn't think it would be so close to outselling MK8 Deluxe already.
@wazlon if ones been following Nintendo's comeback as of late they could've conclude this was coming.
@johnvboy I once exploded on Cobalt for making fun of people, returned to me saying he will not devolve to insults.
Guess he's just down there normally ;P
@johnvboy the fact you’re so bothered to call out two other users for having a different opinion really says a lot about your own self esteem being dependent on the sales of a child’s play thing.
Good numbers for the Switch and PS4 this week. There's a lot of big selling Nintendo titles in the top 20 too.
@bones Red Dead is pretty much dead in Japan, last I saw it was somewhere outside the top 30.
11 out of 20 top games are Nintendo first party games. I almost feel sorry for third parties. One studio is selling more than all other game studios combined. And some people suggested that Nintendo won't release a new console after Wii U flop
@LUIGITORNADO,
I and others on here were simply saying their negativity had no basis in fact,and when this has been validated time and time again they choose not to post.
Their opinions were nothing more than trolling,so their differences in opinion,as you put it,were without any real substance,so should not be taken as anything other than a vain attempt to undermine the comments sections.
As for you low self esteem comment,one can only assume you suffer from this as why else would you bring it up?,and as you are posting on a Nintendo sites forum one would also deduct you have an interest in sales too,well you seem to when a Nintendo product or game does not seem to sell that well.
@LUIGITORNADO I stopped reading at a child's play thing. Please have several seats before you hurt yourself from your own ineptitude.
@dimi,
Nintendo always look long term,the Wii U arrived too late to the market and tablets and smartphones were far too common,but it's was the perfect test for the Nintendo Switch and is not to different when you take a step back.
XBOX ABSOLUTELY CRUSHING their competition! They are dominating Japan right now! Sales number JUMPED UP more than 6x compared to LAST WEEK! NINTENDOOMED! Japan has been overtaken by Microsoft now RIP big N.
Just imagine what is going to happen when the next evolution in Pokemon comes next year, that along with Animal Crossing next year should be crazy, arguably just as good!
@Pineapple_Mohawk Did you actually create an exponential model to predict that? Haha.
@jswhitfield8 Great news!, Thanks!... Day 1 for me.
Only 400k copies in a single week? #Nintendoomed
1) [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo, 12/07/18) – 406,617 (1,627,152)
6) [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo, 04/28/17) – 29,422 (1,911,174)
9) [NSW] Super Mario Odyssey (Bundle Version Included) (Nintendo, 10/27/17) – 14,417 (1,880,842)
Super Smash Bros Ultimate will outsell Super Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart 8 DX by the end of this upcoming week to become the 2nd best-selling Switch game in Japan, only behind Splatoon 2.
"5) [NSW] Super Mario Party (Nintendo, 10/05/18) – 97,529 (587,295)"
Super Mario Party sold ~130,000 copies in its launch week. There is a possibility that it sells more than that during this upcoming week.
If digital sales are included, Super Mario Party will become the 3rd best-selling Mario Party game ever by the end of the year, only behind Mario Party 8 and DS.
@Dr_Corndog what? No, I'm not that smart... I just took 280.000 and saw how many weeks of 9 units drop it would take to get to "xbox in Japan" level of sales
This makes me happy because more 3rd party developers are migrating towards the switch. This is way larger than Smash Ultimate , Pokemon Let’s Go and Mario Kart. Good job Nintendo!
@Hyrule low hanging fruit
