Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has now had its second week on store shelves, performing relatively well in a week with lots of changes at the top of the UK charts.
The game drops down to fourth place this week after a 52% fall in sales from last week's count. While that might sound like a rather hefty fall, a 52% drop is actually a decent result for a second week on the market and the top three games this week all benefitted from sales increases as we get closer to Christmas.
Speaking of Christmas, plenty of family-friendly Nintendo Switch games have also seen boosts in sales this week, likely being wrapped up for some lucky gaming fans to enjoy next week. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe saw a 20% rise this week, keeping it firmly in the top ten, and there were also sales increases for Pokémon Let's Go, Pikachu!, Super Mario Party, Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Here's a look at this week's top ten all formats chart (physical sales only):
1. (2) Red Dead Redemption 2
2. (3) FIFA 19
3. (7) Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
4. (1) Super Smash Bros Ultimate
5. (5) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
6. (8) Spyro Reignited Trilogy
7. (4) Battlefield V
8. (17) Forza Horizon 4
9. (11) Spider-Man
10. (12) Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy
Did you buy any of these chart-topping games this week? Any games set to be place under the tree? Let us know down below.

Does every single resident in UK buy Fifa every year or how does it stay top 10 until a new one comes out?
I have to be honest, my last Smash game was the N64...I didn't like it back then and never played the other ones.
However, I've decided to give it another go with Ultimate and I'm completely lost!
The game has so many options that makes any beginner confused, also, there are no tutorials, at least I couldn't find it, to teach you.
Does anyone know a good Youtube vid that I could watch to try to learn more before I give up again?
In regards to the article, there is no surprise on the sales as explained those 3 first games are on sale due to Xmas so it's on logical that they are on the top.
Smash as far as I know is still selling at full price so a 4th place is really not that bad.
@geheimxy Well I know a lot of people that pretty much has a PlayStation to play FIFA and only FIFA every single year. Welcome to Europe! (But US has a similar thing with madden and cod anyways)
@tourjeff I bought it yesterday too and is my first smash ever. It is hard to get into but if you go to the help section it has tutorials and tips
I've got smash for Christmas but I wontcget on with any other smash I played really so not expecting this one to be much different.
@geheimxy every teenage boy in the UK gets a copy of FIFA for their birthdays, which are obviously spread throughout the year keeping them high in the charts.
@Balta666 there's two lads in my office who ONLY play FIFA. I almost feel sorry for them
Most games see a drop off from first place, even so, Smash is still going strong.(I bet the haters will act like it bombed though 😒)
And boy, MK8D is a beast!
@Balta666 Thanks, I will check the options again and will try to find!
@markspencer The weed hit you hard today didn't it.
@tourjeff I've played a couple of Smash games and still find the menus a total mess. Considering how much work they put in you'd think the menus would be better.
@Balta666 @Roarsome same thing for germany.. sad to see some people not play greater games but if they have fun with it...
Thing is, if you wanted the game you bought it on release, so of course it's going down in the chart
Uh oh, Crash Bandicoot slipped back into top 10 sneakily. He's back with a vengeance.
@geheimxy some people only play FIFA, some Fortnite, some Candy Crush, some World of Warcraft. Sad that they’re missing out on a wide range of amazing experiences but if they’re happy...
@Scottwood101 why should you feel sorry? If they are enjoying themselves why the heck should you have an opinion on how they use their time?
@tourjeff I don't think you really need a tutorial. Use the training mode to learn the basics, i.e. 2 different attack buttons (a and b), with different attacks depending on what way the joystick is tilted. Jump with x or y, shield with zr and grab with r. And learn how to get back on stage if you're falling (double jump and for most fighters b+up). Oh, and the smash attacks are used on enemies with high percentage: just flick the right stick in the direction you want to attack.
Once you've tried the controls in training mode, try Classic mode on the lowest setting with a bunch of different fighters to see which ones you like. After you have beaten Classic mode with a character or two, you can try out Adventure mode for a while and... Well, the rest is just a matter of getting better the more you play.
Also, there are YouTube tutorials if you want them. Some are good.
@Strumpan Thanks, I tried the training mode and learned these basic commands, didn't know about the right stick though, perhaps I will try it a bit more and also the tutorial, it seems there is one somewhere in the options menu!
I was just expecting it to be easier to find it, you know?
Every other fighting game I can remember there was a tutorial mode easily found where you could train the basics but also combos and other more advanced mechanics...I just didn't find it (yet) in the Smash...
I tried the Classic mode but didn't change the options, was playing only with Link to try to get an idea of the game before selecting another character!
I will try it again on my way home, hopefully, I will be able to soon play it online against real people
@diwdiws sorry
Red Dead deserves it
@tourjeff if you don't press any button on the first screen before the menu, a tutorial video plays. It just explains the basic inputs.
There is a tip menu too in the vault i think.
This is my first smash game and i think it's amazing. One of the best games i have played in a long time, i don't usually play fighters.
I understand what you mean about finding some aspects confusing, thats how i felt about previous instalments, the ones i demoed felt hectic and overwhelming, so much so i skipped them thinking i would never learn to be good/compete.
Surprisingly I'm not feeling that this time.
Hang in there, it's a great game.
A few weeks before Christmas, sales, most popular console, typical UK trends, this is not unexpected.
@geheimxy Not all of us, but football is a religion to many in the UK. Personally I'm more of a Pastafarian.
@tourjeff Just don't press anything for a few seconds in the title screen.
@tourjeff there's a tutorial video right before the title screen. Not to mention the training options in the blue "games and more" menu, or the character moves when you pause the game
@tourjeff There's a how to play video in the vault section, movies.
@tourjeff there are tutorials and info in the help section . I was instantly overwhelmed but after a while I’m obsessed! The adventure mode seems confusing at first but it’s the most fun way to
Unlock characters and easier once u work out how to use the spirits! I kept losing against the ‘new challengers’. Pauline’s spirit is a tho! Lol
@tourjeff I feel quite similar to you: I think Smash is actually a very bloated game with a lot of stuff that personally I don't think it necessary. I'd rather just has a figther that's as complex as something like Street Fighter II Turbo but just with all the Nintendo characters and levels, and maybe a couple of extras like the trophy gallery and the music stuff. The rest feels a bit haphazard or is mostly fluff that I don't think is needed. Also, I have never really like the specific controls and way the moves tie into them in Smash either, and again I'd rather it was done more like Street Fighter or something like that.
liking smash so far, finally got everyone unlocked last night took pretty long lol. So far my favorite new character is King K Rool, however I haven't had a chance to try the others out much. The Belmonts whip attacks have insane range based on fighting them to unlock them.
This is likely because almost everyone bought it already! It did outsell BOTW in japan after all.
@EasyDaRon what a waste. But i guess it's like this for many sports with Nfl, nba2k, etc..
Tremendous result for Smash. I heard sales across the board were very high last week.
Anecdotal but I was just In Currys and both people in front of me were buying Switch’s (one Neon and one Smash special edition). Weird times in the U.K.
@Balta666 perhaps, but in the US kids/adults who only own cod or madden are made fun of at school/work nowadays. Being a jock/dudebro is less desirable by the general public. The Revenge of the Nerds is here. 🤣
@EasyDaRon @geheimxy
That simply isn’t true. They also buy COD 😉
@geheimxy Not every resident is fixated with football, just a lot.of them. I live in the UK and think football (and therefore FIFA)is a waste of money and time.
@tourjeff Dont mean to sound like a jerk but there really isn't much to learn. You get two jumps per character plus an up special. The up special gives you an extra jump of sorts with most, but not all, characters. Dont fall off the stage or get knocked off. What is it that you are having problems with?
@whanvee There's more that isn't immediately known unless you look for it. e.g., With Bowser, did you know that with the Up + Air Special, if you tap Special (B button) a few more times during the move, you can get a little more air (and hits if any enemy is around) vertically?
@whanvee Don't worry you don't sound like a jerk.
I get the "basic" of the game but there are things that the game doesn't explain well and that is the issue that I have.
For instance, I didn't see the information about the "right stick" to activate the Smash or that I could use block to "parry" an attack, this kind of info either is "hidden" within the options or is just not there.
For a game like Smash this kind of information should be easier to find, should be under the train options, not under help, tips or whatever it's called
How did the UK go from Rareware and Bullfrog and the pinnacle of creativity to soul sucking sameness with COD and FIFA forever and ever and ever?
@tourjeff
If you start the game and don't press anything, it should start kind if a tutorial. Also under "Vault", I believe, there should be a tips and tricks section. Training is also a good way to learn and understand the different moves and techniques in the game.😉
Since the NES days, the UK has never really been interested in Nintendo. The SNES was outsold by the Mega Drive/Genesis in the UK, and the PlayStation consoles overshadowed all of Nintendo's future consoles (Except the Wii) there as well.
The majority of UK gamers are just angsty teens obsessed with Fifa or violent games. So this honestly isn't a surprise.
@Illusion lol I cannot comment on that around here as my days of school are long gone
@tourjeff like some people added there is a video that starts in the intro that explains all the main details (like flick + button that is something you don't get from training) with a area to train it after. The tips and tricks however will take you about 15 mind just to read through them all...
Speaking as a brit myself, UK people are just out of touch. Why is Fifa and Call of Duty above Smash???
It’s incredibly insulting that Fifa and Cod still manage to reach the top despite being milked to death and having a lot of backlash anyway? Goes to show how screwed up gaming is.
@tourjeff
The menus are quite simple and every option has a small description below.
I think you could force yourself a little bit to better understand it's mechanics, specially because Smash isn't a normal type of fighting game.
At least cod is a real game, and has massive development effort across multiple teams every year.
Is FIFA much more than new teams, new skins / textures, and tweaks to the game? How much more can you add to football?
I have worked on sports games in the past, and I have an idea of how much "real" work is involved... But it's literally a machine. Pump in the assets, pump out the next release. Pay the licensee cost.
@tourjeff i started by levelling up some amiibo, moving onto adventure mode, then played local multiplayer smash with some friends and i didn't suck too bad. there is so much to learn in this game!
Crash is still mangaging to hang in there. Even after almost 1,5 years
Well like a few on here, I can't see the appeal of smash Bros either, had it on N64 but didn't play it and doubt I will buy it again. Same goes for the frikken Pokémon!
Smash Bros Ultimate retail sales:
> Week 1: ~135,000
> Week 2: ~64,000
Smash Bros Brawl retail sales:
> Week 1: ~83,000
> Week 2: ~43,000
Mario Kart 8 DX is selling 30,000-40,000 copies per week in the U.K. alone. Its weekly sales across all of Europe in total must be staggering. Wouldn't be surprised if it immediately starts outselling Smash Bros Ultimate once the year is over.
@tourjeff I see what you mean.
I want to know SSB's global sales! If it sold 1.2 million in Japan, in 5 days, physical only, I imagine globally might be upwards of 3 million already!
@tourjeff izaw smash on youtube
no GTAV in a top10 UK sales list.
must be a fake
i never get why people are surprised fifa does well here, i haven't bought it in years but i totally get it. the number one sport in the world by far, in the country where it originated. a game that works really well as a multiplayer and gives as close to a gaming feel as you can get to being a real footballer, something most kids dream of in the UK.
absolutely loving smash bros, as someone who loved melee but wasn't too fussed about any of the sequels. didn't think i would like it as much as i do and this is despite getting ripped a new one online!
