Now this is a downright wonderful article and literally brought a tear to my eye. You captured the nostalgia perfectly. Welcome to Nintendo Life, friend, and I look forward to reading more of your work soon.
Wow. I was thinking about picking this one up, but after reading some of the comments on here regarding the technical issues and the developer's track record...I think I'll wait.
Yeah, being from Michigan, I know Faygo well. They're a Detroit based company. Any gas station or convenience store, they're just as common as Coke or Pepsi. I remember these Mario promos. I would doubt that Nintendo would include an Easter Egg for a company as obscure as Faygo in one of their games. Think about it, what are the odds of there being ANY product placement in a Mario game, let alone something as obscure as Faygo? Very interesting though!
I'm surprised no one else has pointed out the similarities between the map in Link to the Past and the Breath of the Wild overworld map. Look at the two side by side....
I don't think we'll see a Kingdom Hearts game, to be honest. At least not a mainline entry. And not to be negative, but can the Switch handle FFIV? If I recall, that game was pushing the PS4 to its limits
This is gonna be awesome. I certainly hope we will have a plethora of backgrounds/level themes to choose from. The underground stages from Mario Bros. 1 and castle stages would be great...but how about the sky stages from Mario 3?
Nintendo knows exactly what they're doing. Build hype with Mario Kart 8, and capitalize on it before it fizzles out with a bunch of exciting stuff at E3. Good strategy.
Nintendo is bringing it. This is grabbing people's attention in the same way that those Old Spice commercials did. It's specifically targeting western audiences. Weird and stupid.
Here I was hoping the justification for taking down physical rewards in April was because they were going to actually update the rewards for once...no such luck.
Everyone's freaking out about this "Nintendo Digital Event." I think the fact that Nintendo didn't call it a "Nintendo Direct" speaks volumes. I wouldn't be surprised if it's a hybrid between a traditional press conference and a Direct.
Looking at the titles side by side like that, I actually prefer the older, more "cartoony" style of the first four games' titles. The sleek design of the new title is neat and all, but doesn't really feel like Mario to me. Maybe someday Nintendo will go back to that blocky/cartoon font for the title.
I would estimate that I had fifteen or so Virtual Console/E-Shop games on my original Wii--at least a few hundred dollars worth of content. Well, my Wii bricked about a year ago (stuck at the health warning screen). Needless to say, I lost all of my purchases forever.
At the risk of sounding stupid, am I missing something with the cooking apps on Wii U? I'm in North America and haven't seen any on the eshop, unless I'm overlooking them.
The inclusion of Pac Man as a racer is definitely exciting, albeit a bit confusing that he would be included in a game with "Mario" in the title. Is this a sign that we might get him in Smash Bros.?
@wolfy40oz The game and watch wasn't up in the sold out section yesterday (I check the club Nintendo rewards on almost a daily basis). Perhaps it's a hint that they'll be bringing it back in the near future?
@King47 Mario RPG is excellent, and well worth the 200 coins. It'd a bit easier/simpler than most Square RPGs, but is definitely not a "kiddie" game. Get it, you'll be glad you did.
Also, just ordered my Zelda posters a few minutes ago. Gonna put them in a frame and put them up in my game room!
I just noticed today that Nintendo actually has Super Mario Bros. 3 listed on the North American Wii U virtual console, but it's like "shadowed" out and has an "available soon" message on it. What's the deal with that? Confusing, to say the least. Anyhow, nothing this week for me. Here's to hoping we get Super Mario 64 sometime soon on the Wii U virtual console!!!
Good God I just threw up in my mouth a little. That blonde bimbo is cringeworthy. Random shots of her cackling and pretending to laugh along with somebody off camera...this is terrible. I don't know what else to say.
This Direct was awesome! I can't understand why so many people are complaining. It's like a bunch of rotten, spoiled little children. Nintendo gave us pretty much everything we had been asking for: GBA games on VC Release dates for MK8, Mario Golf, and Kirby Metroid Fusion on VC X footage Bayonetta 2 footage a few surprises (NES Remix 2, Little Mac)
Next Level Games tweeted to watch tomorrow for the Nintendo Direct. Do you think we will hear about a new project they are doing? Mario Strikers 3? New Punch Out? Or what about a Star Fox? They have said in the past that Nintendo keeps giving them "better and better IP's."
My expectations are low. I just have this feeling that we'll get a new character for MK8 and maybe a new boss for Donkey Kong or something. I hope I'm proven wrong. Here's hoping we'll get release dates for Bayonetta 2 and an update on X and Yarn Yoshi...but I'm not holding my breath.
"Beyond that, Google Glass is all the rage, for those that like the idea being "connected" all of the time — that seams like another step towards an Orwellian dystopia, with the NSA no doubt spying on your eyeballs, but we digress."
Couldn't have said it better myself, Thomas. Let's just hope that this new, unannounced Nintendo product isn't something along these lines.
@Agent721 Maybe you're right. I'm honestly on the fence when it comes to this issue. It could help Nintendo, or it could harm them in the long run. I can't say. However, I really think Nintendo is too stubborn to make this leap anytime soon...
People seem to read "smart phone" and immediately think that Nintendo is going to start releasing their catalogue on these devices. This isn't the case, nor do I think it ever will be.
@gatorboi352 "Please explain to me how something like that is going to equate to higher 3DS/Wii U sales."
I think it's safe to say that there's a whole market of untapped Nintendo customers with the younger generation of kids playing games on mom and dad's smart phone. What if Nintendo did a tie-in with Angry Birds? (I know, it's out there, but it's just an example) If Nintendo can release a quality, addictive, yet simple game on a smart phone, lots of kids would play it and be begging mom and dad for the bigger, better Mario game on the Wii U.
It's about time Nintendo gets with the program and brings its advertising/marketing strategies into the 21st century (i.e. smart devices/social media). This is a good thing, imo. Nintendo isn't going to ditch making games for the WiiU or 3DS. It seems like this smart phone strategy will be a complete overhaul to its marketing. Imagine a Nintendo "app" that allows kids to play Mario minigames (like the ones on the old DS carts). At the same time, this app would tease upcoming Nintendo games and products. This article really isn't that far off...
At the very least, Nintendo needs to release the entire Wii Virtual Console library onto the Wii U. And I agree with what @ajcismo said...every first party NES game NEEDS to be on the Virtual Console. There is no excuse for it. I remember when the Wii was still in development, a lot of gaming magazines called it a "Nintend-all." That was the idea...it would be capable of playing all first party Nintendo games through emulation. Unfortunately, this is not the case. The release of Earthbound, however, was a step in the right direction.
The lady and I bought our Wii U last night. We opted for the Mario/Luigi bundle with the two "New U" games packaged in. I have to say, we were both up FAR too late last night having a blast. I was deeply saddened and concerned to wake up to this news today. I sure hope Nintendo continues to see this console through and provide content for it...I would hate for my $300 investment to be dead on arrival.
