With the release of Mario Kart 8 on Wii U preoccupying many minds ahead of 30th May, Nintendo is taking every opportunity to raise awareness and hype. Is there a better way to do this than with a fancy infographic? No, no there isn't.
The infographic below shows the eight main series entries to date, spurning the Namco-developed Mario Kart Arcade entries in favour of those on Nintendo's own hardware. That seems fair, as the selection does conveniently add up the correct numbers to bring us to number eight on the Wii U.
You can check it out below — perhaps more graphic than info — and let us know what you think. If you want to see it full size, just click on the image, or tap if you're on a fancy smart device.

i own them all apart from super circuit, this makes me want to complete the collection tho
I wish they named it Mario Kart U. Some people don't buy a game because they need to play the previous games first of the series especially with RPG games (edit) if they see a number iteration on the title.
I've never played the first three...my first Mario Kart ever was DS but I was able to play Double Dash with a friend on a few occasions. All of these games are great, and Mario Kart 8 looks simply marvelous. Can't wait for May 30.
Got them all except GBA & DS. Like @danjohnson141 said, seeing the info graphic makes me want them all!
@danjohnson141 @ledreppe Wouldn't be surprised if Super Circuit came to Wii U VC next month. Adds more hype to 8.
Man, I still adore Double Dash. The addition of co-op was very welcome to someone (like me) who isn't exactly great at competitive multiplayer.
@outburst Sry, but I don't think that will be a problem since it's a racing/kart game with no actual story-line attached..
@schizor yeah that's why I've no problem buying this one. I will however pass on Bayonetta 2 until I could play the first Bayonetta. But I don't plan on buying a PS3/360 just to play it. Have they named Bayonetta 2 --> Bayonetta: A New Hairdo, it would be a day one purchase for me. xD
But still they could have given a unique name for Mario Kart 7 and 8. Look at the games before it.
Ugh, Release the game already.
Played them all and own them all except for Double Dash and MK7. MK8 is going to be an excellent addition!
My new wallpaper! I played all of them!
I want the old logotype back It's all beautiful though.
@outburst A possible solution to this could be, if Platinum does what the Mass Effect 3 devs did with the Wii U edition. Sum up the story of the previous game with some kind of cartoon interactive comic thing. Or U could simply just read the story of Bayonetta 1 on the internet.. Just an idea.
3 year inbetween games, generally. That would mean the 3ds only has 3 more years or less. O_O
I've been playing Mario Kart since the start and it's my fav racing game series ever. I've gone through every last one of them and my top choice still is Double Dash. I must admit though, it may be removed from it's top spot if MK8 lives up to it's expectations!
I've got them all except for DS and 64. I sold DS and never got round to picking up 64. If they release it on the Wii U VC with off-tv play I'll get it!
Well if they included the arcade titles the numbers would be thrown off.
Well I own every single Mario Kart to date with the exception of the new one coming on the 30th May (which I will have). I wasn't lying when I said that Mario Kart was one of my favorite franchises. This will be awesome!
I have all of them in physical or VC. Such a good series! The end of May cannot come soon enough
I missed the DS ones! I've been trying to hunt down 7 for a good price.
BTW, why isn't the Gamecube controller featured in the poster!
I've got them all! Except for Mario Kart 8 of course. But May 30th, that will be remidied! Come on time, hurry up!
I played The second half of the mario karts that is if i count the coming soon mario kart 8 cant wait
@outburst or u can watch bayonetta movie it explains everything from the first game
@schizor and @Mr_Aks well I want to play the 1 before playing 2. xD and I don't want my kid when he's old enough asking me later, "Dad, Bayonetta 2 is awesome where's Bayonetta 1 from our library/collection?".
I'm just being childish about the title, but I hope they'd drop the 2 and replace it with a second title. Or maybe they'd just port the first one on HD and include it on a special edition bundle? xD
Since it's pretty apparent Nintendo is doing this whole Wii U thing without major 3rd parties, they need to get on the ball with the Virtual Console, and more specifically, the GameCube VC games. It's been too long since I've played Double Dash.
Gimme Mario Kart 8 now!!!!!!!!!!!!
Own all except 8...
That would make a nice bonus poster for preordering. Or they could just give it away when you pick up the game. Seems a waste for such a cool graphic to not be made into a poster. My kids room is covered w/ free Pokemon posters from Gamestop. And a couple of Skylanders ads.
I'm glad this is named MK 8 just for the cool use of the escher mobius 8.
Looking at the titles side by side like that, I actually prefer the older, more "cartoony" style of the first four games' titles. The sleek design of the new title is neat and all, but doesn't really feel like Mario to me. Maybe someday Nintendo will go back to that blocky/cartoon font for the title.
@outburst I hope you're kidding...
@Falkor They make one Mario Kart game per system. If you like the old one, then play the old one.
Well, Mario Kart 7 was named so because of the Lucky Seven item. Mario Kart 8 was named so because of the Mobius strip. What would the ninth one be called? I want to here your responses!
My guess is Mario Kart Fusion, referring to the rumoured Fusion device.
@outburst I agree, numbered games are a barrier for people (like me) that might be new to the series. That said, I don't look at sports/racing type games that are numbered the same way as I would a game that has some kind of story and is numbered implying play the past games.
Oh, man. I've put so many hours into each of these. Can't wait for 8!
@Rafie ... Can't wait either ... Looks Amazing
I guess they were just trying to go according to the main canon by leaving out the GP titles. Nonetheless, I am excited for Kart 8! It may turn out to be the Wii U's best game at the time of its release!
The infographic is nice and all, but who, other than Nintendo fans, is gonna see this? I haven't seen a single advert on the internet for it, nor a commercial on TV. If Nintendo really want this game to sell, then they should put a lot more effort into advertising it. That is just the hurtful truth from myself in the UK.
I've played them all...except for DD, Wii and 7 :/ I mean, I HAVE played 7. For like half a lap.
Super is still the worst.
@grayadamson Ahhh Double Dash!! Just like you, it is still my favorite Mario Kart to date. Since I enjoy local multiplayer more than online, having 8 people in my house playing MK is so much fun! (I'm trying to get a third broadband adapter to have 12 people LAN matches
Baby Park!!!
Make that a preorder bonus! Or a Club Nintendo reward! Or something! I just want that graphic in some tangible form!
I still think Double Dash is better than Mario Kart Wii!!
Hopefully, someday I shall legitimately collect every single game in the series. I already have some of the games to start things off, but this might take a while since there are other games with some priority that I want too.
@danjohnson141 I only have mario kart 7 and double dash....
Double Dash is still my favorite.
I really wish they would follow it up with a sequel of some sort. Two man karts are simply too great of an idea to be used the once.
@Brickbuild101 You're right. This is a Nintendo exclusive for only ones in the family-Sorry Namco Bandai.
The arcade ones kind of suck anyway. They are interesting and it's fun to be able to play as Pacman or Blinky but the constant announcer is annoying, and the gameplay is very dumbed down. The tracks are also a bit repetitive in style. They just don't have enough similarities with console Mario Kart.
nice:)
I bought the last 3 on launch date, will do the same for 8. Own them all except Super Circuit.
Not that you asked but my favorite Mario Karts, in-order, are as follows:
1. Super Mario Kart
2. Mario Kart 8 (I'm predicting)
3. Mario Kart 7
4. Mario Kart Super Circuit
5. Mario Kart DS
6. Mario Kart Wii
7. Mario Kart DD
8. Mario Kart 64
Wow the art style sure has changed over the years i have every game they still look awesome would love that pic on my games room wall.
Every time I think about Mario Kart Super Circuit, I always think about the way red turtle shells worked in that game. Instead of throwing them behind you, you could simply drop them on the ground. Whoever was the first person to pass by it, it would make this "beep beep beep" noise, then start following that person until it hit them.
I've been hoping they would bring that ability back for years, but I suppose it would make it too easy for the person in first place to hold onto their lead.
Mario Kart DS is the best Mario Kart full stop!
Ive played all except the first. My favorite has to be....oh...oh god I cant decide
slow news day....hopefully be plenty in a couple of hours
Funny enough, this one pic explains the Wii U difference better than every direct attempt they've made. Anyone who looks at this is going to see that it's on a new system with better graphics. The difference in color between the Wii and the Wii U helps differentiate them.
Looking mighty fine, looking just fine. If they are using this wait to hype the living hell out of this game I'll just say....ITS WORKING MUST HAVE NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amazing infographic! I would love to print and frame it — would go good next to the Pokemon one I got for buying X and Y. I own all of these... definitely one of the best gaming series of all time. I cannot wait for Mario Kart 8 — going to consume my family for quite some time!
@goonow The 3DS is only just getting started. The 2013 lineup was unbelievably good and it can only get better. Remember, the PS2 lasted 13 years. And the 3DS's recent games aren't even testing the limits of the console. Before SSB4, what other game fully utilized 60fps 3D on the 3DS? And the cartridges hold a maximum of 8GB but the games out now still use less than 2. And the 3D effect has only been getting better with new games.
@outburst It's a riff on Microsoft Windows 7 & 8 after the previous six major editions (3.1, 95, 98, 2000, XP, Vista) had different naming schemes.
@InMooseWeTrust Tekken 3D has 60 FPS in 3D.
@Dreamcaster-X Agreed. MK Wii has great online play (for races, anyway) and probably a better single-player experience, but it absolutely sucks when it comes to local multiplayer, especially in Battle Mode. Double Dash, on the other hand, has a great co-op mechanic, better roster, fun racer-exclusive items, 4-player Grand Prix, All Cup Tour, and excellent Battle Mode arenas with free-for-all stock matches.
Out of the ones I own, my rankings are:
1. MK: Double Dash
2. MK7
3. MK Wii
4. MK: Super Curcuit
