Good luck on your new career, Thomas! I may not post often, but I read the site everyday. I'm grateful for your work on my go-to Nintendo site, and for that, thank you sincerely.
I went into my GameStop in Dallas yesterday to get my Uncharted preorder, but everyone else there was waiting for a SNES Classic. The store only received a total of eight systems. Eight. Once I got wind of what was happening, I talked to the other guys and gals there, and they all tried Wal-Mart, Best Buy, etc. to no avail. Every place that had them ran out quickly.
I didn't want an SNES classic because I knew something like this would happen, but I can't help but feel bad for everyone who wanted one.
@3MonthBeef There definitely is time left, yeah. One recent game I'm hyped for is Fire Emblem Echoes, and I'd love to get it. I'm pretty sure there's other good stuff in the future, but I'd likely be spending the next few years playing catch up!
I can't believe it's been six freaking years. Man, I'm behind on my Nintendo.
I don't own a 3DS, but I've wanted one for a while. Unfortunately all of the early 2010's systems came out when my finances were utter garbage. I'll get one someday, even if Switch makes it obsolete.
I wish I had 3DS so I could get this. Never played Awakening, but I've played the Tellius games and had a reproduction of Binding Blade (which I lost), so I suppose I lean more towards older games. I've been hype from the first trailer since I want to try the older Fire Emblem titles, so I hope it's pretty good.
I've really been excited for it since I saw the trailer during the Switch reveal. I'm gonna wait until I've played more Zelda games, but I'd be stupid not to get this when I buy a Switch.
Gotta admit, this is the first time I've heard this. Discs don't last forever I know, but I didn't think it was this serious.
Most of my games are on disc as well. Crap. I've always prided myself on taking good care of my games, but after reading this, I do feel pretty paranoid.
I keep my games in their boxes, with most of them currently sitting under my bed in bigger boxes. I always hold them with my fingertips on the edges with my thumb in the center hole. I'd think I'd have nothing to worry about, but man am I scared.
I do like the idea behind it, but I do wonder how it handle the portable aspect, or at least, how well it will work. I keep seeing mentions of battery life, and I am curious how well "bigger games" can run on the go.
That said, it does look like a pretty swish console so far. I know I need a new Nintendo system soon.
Interesting. I unfortunately have yet to touch Shovel Knight, but I've seen it in action, and it's definitely up my alley! This game is too. It's an enticing crossover.
Well, I'm not too surprised after hearing how poorly it's been performing. Yet, I'm still saddened by it. I've been wanting to get one whenever I've gotten the cash for it, so hopefully it doesn't go dodo before I can. I can't miss out on Smash, Mario and the Zelda HD ports.
The freaking roster alone makes this game hard to top by default. Even factoring in stinkers like Dark Pit, It's a roster that may never be replicated.
Who knows where Smash can go from here, but oh man does it have it work cut out for it.
Happy 10th NL. I haven't been very active around here due to my lack of a Wii U and 3DS and whatnot, but I did tag along for the 30th anniversary of Mario and I had fun going down memory lane. I wish you all a happy 10th and keep going forward!
I liked this game. At the very least, it filled the 2D Mario void I had since childhood. Never did play the multiplayer, due to a lack of functional wiimotes.
This game man, this game. If it wasn't Brawl, it was this game that made the Wii a must buy for me. I kinda already gushed about Galaxy, but it's hard for me to not love this game. It's like the book you couldn't stop reading as a kid. I haven't been able to play the sequel, but one day.......
I also recently got a new sensor bar, so I'm jumping back in first chance I get!
This was the first Mario Kart I played on console since the original. Mario Kart DS was good, but I really wanted a console Mario Kart, and this was really good to me. I beat most of the cups and played online alot. I also used the wheel, which I felt was pretty good. I know some don't like it, but I never had a problem with it personally.
I haven't played this game, but I really want to. I remember when it first came out and the kids everywhere were talking about it along with Melee. After playing 64 and Galaxy, I feel incomplete not having at least tried this.
I didn't own an N64, so my first experience with this game was the DS remake when I first got my DS. I eventually got it on Wii Virtual Console, and although I enjoy the game alot, I will admit it is dated in a few ways, mostly the camera. Still, there's no doubt Super Mario 64 was great in it's time, and one of the premier titles of the 90's.
I'm really grateful for this collection for introducing me to Mario's NES adventures. I'm not really one of those guys who wants a straight point for point port, unless the rerelease is bugged or something. So the improved art is a huge treat.
I do hope this hits digital. I'd love to get it again.
If you ask me, Mario isn't just a gateway for Nintendo, but video games in general. The moniker of "Mr. Video Game" couldn't fit him more perfectly. Many gamers I've known either fell in love with gaming through Mario, or flat out didn't know gaming existed before Mario. I personally am very happy my first video game ever was a Mario game.
Even if I wasn't a Mario fan, this game would probably stick with me for the rest of my life since it was the first video game I've ever played. It's because of this game Mario is who I think of first whenever I think of video games, even over my other favorite franchises.
It's been forever since I've seen this game. This was my first Mario Kart, and was probably my second Mario game ever. Those screens make me feel like a 4 year old again. Unlike SMW and Mario 3, I've never been able to play this in any capacity after my mom got rid of her SNES. So it's been forever since I've thought about this game.
It was also the first racing game I've ever played, and started my love of that genre. If I wasn't played SMW or All Stars, it was this. Heck I still remember Rainbow Road. It felt majestic to my young mind as I saw the colors and heard the music.
Man, whenever I get a Wii U this is one of the first retro games I'm getting. My childhood urges for nostalgia
I played this game a bit in my youth, and I still remember some things about it. Being able to play as someone other than Mario was mental at the time. I never beat Birdo though. Really hope I can revisit it in the future.
I also still remember my reaction to how this wasn't originally a Mario game. I thought it was crazy. Though if I played it nowadays I'd probably wonder why it's so different!
I played World before 3 myself, but I never knew that it was the newer out the two at the time because I was young. However, 3 coming out after World in the UK is a fact I didn't know 'till now and I think that's interesting, if a bit unfortunate.
But yeah, get to playing 3 at some point. It's good.
I never played this, but I did play it's sequel, 6 Golden Coins. It wasn't bad but it didn't click for me personally. Glad to see the community here has fond memories of this game, because even though they had their limits the Game Boy games were good in their own right.
Even though I owned Super Mario All Stars, I still haven't played this game (which is either good or bad depending on who you ask). I did watch a let's play of the game, and while it isn't really unfair, it does seem like a game that would beat you down.
I am interested in trying it at least once though, just to say I've experienced it. Don't get me wrong, I'm no Mario master! The early 2D games are what I have lesser experience with, and I'm sure this game will chew me up.
I remember playing Super Mario Bros. 3 via All Stars, and later having the GBA port. Out of the earlier Mario games, 3 is the one I remember the most. I used to play it all the time and have so much trouble with the fortresses. I often used the 2-player to kinda cheat so I'd go through the game with more lives. Even with that, the closest I remember getting in the game was World 4. To this day I still haven't beaten the game.
However, I no longer own the game in any capacity, so my next attempt will have to wait.
@BigDaddysPizza Yeah, I didn't mind the first two games, but the third didn't deserve the Rayman name to me. I'm glad Origins came around and put him back in the spotlight.
As for this, I definitely would have loved to see it happen. But I'm happy with Origins and Legends.
Pleasure to read this article. I love Super Mario Galaxy, to the point where I might name it my favorite Mario game. As someone who was lucky enough to play Mario on Super Nintendo, I knew there was something special about this game when I first saw it, and I knew I wanted a Wii ASAP. I got a Wii in mid 2007 and Galaxy for Christmas that year. I wasn't disappointed. Seeing the colorful worlds accompanied by a stellar soundtrack made me feel like a kid again, going on a grand adventure like I did with Super Mario World.
It took me longer than desired to finish the game (thanks to sensor bar and Wiimote problems and living on a budget), but when I did it was similar to those movies where a kid went inside a storybook and popped out at the end. Afterward I dove back in and got all the stars with Mario. I started a run with Luigi, but Wiimote and sensor bar problems currently leave the playthrough unfinished. Nonetheless, I'll always remember my time with this game, and I'll get the sequel first chance I get.
I'll admit that this wasn't my first Mario game (that would be Super Mario World), but I appreciate this game in a historical sense. This game helped gaming out of a slump and invaded pop culture, as well as being integral to many a gamer's life. I personally feel any gamer should experience this game at least once, to appreciate gaming history and know how great a simple game can be.
I look forward to seeing the rest of the articles in this series. Going down Mario history is something I'm very excited for!
